DDS Volunteers Are Superheroes
They may appear to be mild-mannered dental health
professionals, but DDS volunteers are really superheroes
who transform lives. They may not be faster than a
speeding bullet, but their speedy dental drills are always
at the ready. They may not have X-ray vision, but they
do control X-ray machines. And above all, DDS volunteers are generous in spirit and kind in heart—giving
back to their communities and returning smiles to the
faces of those most in need.
Donated Dental Services (DDS) is a program of the
Louisiana Dental Association and the Louisiana
Foundation of Dentistry for the Handicapped (LFDH). It
is a community of volunteer dental health professionals
who make heroic differences in the lives of the often
overlooked and at-risk population of elderly or disabled
people who cannot afford dental care. Without access to
care, these patients frequently fall through the cracks of
public health programs, especially Medicaid and
Medicare.
Designed by dentists to be as simple and efficient as
possible, DDS is one of the nation’s largest dental health
volunteer programs. If you’re already a volunteer,

Local Hero: Dr. Raymond Unland
You’ve Got the Power
Dr. Raymond Unland, Jr. has been in
practice since 1984, first in New
Orleans and then in Metairie. For many
of these years he has also been the
board chair of Louisiana’s DDS
program. “I was recruited by the coordinator, who was a personal friend,” he
recalls. “She was very persuasive.”
Now Dr. Unland is also extremely
persuasive on behalf of the organization. “These people
really need something,” he says. “It’s an easy thing for
any dentist to do and it changes their lives. You take a
patient who is very self-conscious and has low self
esteem, and you fix them up. They’re not thinking about
their teeth all the time, so they smile. It’s really heartwarming.” Dr. Unland’s most recent DDS patient suffers
from a mild bi-polar disorder. “We’re doing orthodontics,
five crowns and a partial denture,” he says enthusiastically. “We’re not finished yet, and she’s just smiling all
the time.” As the state DDS chair, Dr. Unland helps to
define the issues and serves as a liaison with the
Louisiana Dental Association and other organizations. In
the wake of Katrina, it can be difficult for dentists to fit in
volunteer work. Nevertheless, Dr. Unland says,
“Louisiana dentists have really stepped up to the plate. In
spite of all the devastation around us, we are on track to
volunteering the biggest amount of dentistry ever!”

Superhuman Results in Louisiana
During the fiscal year 2006 (July 1, 2005 – June 30,
2006), 362 dentists and 118 labs volunteered for the
DDS program. Treatment worth $404,161 was donated
to 213 individuals. An additional 199 people were
referred to volunteer dentists and were undergoing care
at the end of June. Dental labs contributed $31,909
worth of fabrications.
