Going North.
The much anticipated North Ogden
branch opens with a party.
CEO Vickie van der Have and
North Ogden City Mayor Richard
Harris cut the ribbon.
After a short 3-month build time, the new branch in North
Ogden is complete and welcoming members in north Weber
county.
Ground was broken on July 5th, and by October 8th, the
branch was complete. The branch doors opened on October
12th and a ribbon cutting ceremony was held on October 14th.
The Grand Opening celebration was held from October 21st23rd. On the final day of the Grand Opening, KBull 93 FM and
host Pat Garret came to host the party, while Sonora Grill put on
a hot chili pepper eat-off.
Though the weather turned south on Saturday, the drizzling rain
couldn’t keep hundreds of eager members and local residents
from joining the festivities.
During the Grand Opening, members entered to win a Hawaiian vacation, iPod Touch, iPad, HDTV and dozens of prizes
donated by local businesses.
The new North Ogden branch has a three lane drive-up with
Saturday service. There is also a 24-hour ATM, safe deposit
boxes, and night drop service available.
K-Bull 93FM and host Pat Garrett were on site for the Grand
Opening.
Sonora Grill sponsored a hot chili
pepper eat-off. Contestants
started off with habanero salsa.
Klint Anderson, the contest winner, ate the salsa, 2 jalapenos
and 4 habanero peppers.
K-Bull 93 host Pat Garret was a
crowd favorite when he drew
names for raffle prizes, including an
iPad, Hawaiian vacation and HDTV.
Introducing the New
Simple Checking Accounts
tions nationwide, and a free debit
card, but each checking account
also has one distinguishing feature.
The Rewards checking account lets
members earn 1 Scorecard reward
point for every $1 spent. Points can
be redeemed for discounts on WSCU
loans, free airline tickets, hotel stays,
golf clubs, electronics, and thousands
of other items for just $20 per year.
Interest Checking is the perfect account for members with a high balance, and pays interest on balances
over $1,000.
It’s been decades since the financial
industry has seen so much change to
checking accounts as it has the past
year.
New legislation has changed the
way most institutions operate their
checking products, and many have
eliminated free checking, or have attached stringent criteria for maintaining a fee-free account.
When the new checking account
legislation was being passed, we took
the opportunity to re-evaluate and reintroduce our checking product lineup
to create a more simple and memberfriendly approach to our checking
lineup.
The end result?
The SimpleChecking accounts.
The new accounts share common
features like Online banking and Bill
pay, no ATM charges at 28,000 loca-
The Free Checking account is a great
starter account for students with no
balance requirements or transaction
limits. This non-nonsense account lets
members enjoy the freedom of no low
balance fees or monthly maintenance
charges.

Holiday Budgeting
Keep your expenses down without becoming a Scrooge.
If you are like most holiday shoppers, you have some kind of holiday
budget worked out. Also, if you are
like most shoppers, that budget is
always too small and is used up by the
first week of December. How do you
properly budget, then stick to your
budget? Here are a few tips:
chase gifts for grandma and grandpa, or each of your parents, or other
people individually, consider combining to get a single gift. For example, if
you normally give a $20 gift to each
person in a family of 3, consider buying one $25 gift for the group. Another
twist is to combine with others who
are buying for the same people. For
example, try going in on a gift with
your siblings to buy for parents. Your
combined contributions will buy a
nicer gift and cost you less at the
same time.
1) Make a list- Inevitably, you will
forget to shop for someone, then
remember at the last minute, usually
after your budget is spent. Try writing down everyone you plan to shop
for; family (immediate and distant),
friends, co-workers, and any charity
gifts you will purchase. Assign each
individual a budget.
4) Set expectations- If your
income has been reduced, or if you
just don’t want to spend as much this
year, tell your future gift recipients in
advance. It’s important to let them
know everyone on your list will be
getting less this year so they don’t feel
singled-out. This also applies to your
kids- if they aren’t getting everything
they want, don’t be afraid to tell them
in advance.
2) Expect the unexpected-
There is always a last minute gift-giving
occasion at work, school, or among
family. Plan in a few extra dollars for
the last-minute items.
3) Group your gifts- If you pur-

when you open a VISA Platinum card account
No balance transfer fees and rates as low as 9.75% APR after.
Call, click or visit for details.
5) Set the money aside- Credit
card limits can be tempting, and if
they have burned your budget in the
past, try getting a pre-paid debit card
(available at any WSCU branch). The
card can be used almost anywhere
VISA is accepted, and will keep you
from spending any more money than
you intend to. A pre-paid card also
makes a great substitute for cashthere’s no loose change, and you
can make both in-store and online
purchases on the same card.
6) Learn from the past- After the
holidays are over, go back over your
original list and evaluate how much
you really spent. Save your list in a
safe place for next year, and set up a
savings account (like the WSCU MyFund) to prepare for the next holiday
shopping season.
Debit Card Courtesy Pay
extra protection for your account
Courtesy Pay is a service that allows transactions made on your checking
account to clear, even if you don’t have enough money in your account
to cover the cost of the transaction.
You can access up to $500 of Courtesy Pay protection through the use
of a check, at a branch, over the phone, or with Bill pay or through ACH
transactions.
As an additional option, you can opt-in to receive protection on ATM and
Debit card transactions in the event of an overdraft. To request the additional coverage through Debit card and ATM transactions, please visit a
branch or call 801-399-9728.
The Joy of Service
Working to build a better community.
It’s been a busy summer for our community involvement efforts. Here’s a look
at what we’ve been doing do give back to the community:
WSCU Employees participate in
Adopt-a-Highway in Huntsville.
Red Cross Heroes Breakfast: WSCU was the title sponsor for the Heroes breakfast held by the American Red Cross of Northern Utah. The event is held each
year to honor individuals that have made a significant impact on others in the
community.
Highway Cleanup: Employees donated their time to clean a stretch of Highway
39 in Huntsville in September. The credit union has participated in the adopt-ahighway program every spring and fall since 2005.
Domestic Violence Awareness: WSCU hosted a walk for Domestic Violence
Awareness at the Main office. The event was sponsored by the YCC and
Ogden Police Department.
A group gathers at the Main
office to begin a walk to raise
domestic violence awareness
Red Cross Gourmet Gala: Credit Union employees volunteered for the American Red Cross Gourmet Gala at Snowbasin Resort. The event featured dishes
from the lead chefs at restaurants from Weber and Davis county. The event
raised over $50,000 to benefit the American Red Cross disaster relief efforts in
Northern Utah.

Local Business Highlight: Cafe Ville Bella
ited, the Cafe had delivered
cupcakes to the hospital, a
high school, campus, and
other businesses.
“We go through about 150200 cupcakes in an average
day.” impressive, considering the size of their operation.
What also impressed me
was the way the Morriss’s
have managed to turn coffee and sandwiches into a
study hall. The decorations,
music and layout of the
shop made for an inviting
atmosphere; a fact made
obvious by the full tables
and students hunched over
laptops.
Sandwiches, Coffee, and outof-this-world cupcakes.
You don’t usually find a crowded
sandwich and coffee shop at 3:00
in the afternoon, but Cafe Ville Bella
was alive with great music, and a full
house.
I was greeted with a big smile from
John Morris, co-owner of the Cafe,
as I walked in. I could immediately tell from his appearance and
demeanor that he had just survived
another lunch rush, but he was warm
and welcoming, so we sat down to
talk about the Cafe and his insights.
“My wife always wanted a coffee
shop, it was her idea to start this”,
was his response when asked where
the concept emerged from. John’s
wife, Anne, received her culinary
training in San Francisco, and uses
her background to concoct some
truly unique recipes for the Cafe.
Cafe Ville Bella was opened on St.
Patrick’s day in 2007, and though it
primarily served up food and coffee
for University students and faculty,
their reputation has grown to cover
a much larger area. The day I vis-
“The food is awesome, it’s
great to study here, and
there’s not a better place to go”
remarked one of the students upon
hearing our conversation.
Turning our attention to small business matters, I asked John if he
would do it all over again, and if so,
what he might change.
Without a pause, he asserted he
would indeed do it all over again,
but then he explained what “it” was.
“During our first year, we were open
6:00 a.m. to midnight every day, and
I worked almost all of those hours.”
As for the things he would change,
he only offered one piece of advice:
watch where your money is going.
“A lot of money gets wasted on
needless things. Of course we tried
to be conservative and save, but if I
did it over again, I would have been
more careful.
At the time the cafe opened, there
were seven employees. Though
John was happy with most of them,
he admitted he was overstaffed
at the time, an expense he said he
could probably have gone without.
“It was expensive, but what’s
important to remember is that the
best employee in the world will
never care as deeply or passionately
about the success of your business
as you do.”
Starting a business is no small task,
especially if your trade is food service, but despite his exhausted look
and the mess on his shirt from the
lunch hour, he never stopped smiling, laughing and bantering with his
customers.
“My favorite part of this business?
The customers- it’s nice to feel comfortable, to get to know people, and
to feel appreciated. Just think of it- I
get paid to have friends come and
visit.”
When asked about his plans, John
admitted he would like to expand
the concept of his store, but for now,
he had his hands full.
