You may be surprised to learn that more than 75 percent of visitors go duty-free shopping, purchasing jewelry, perfume, BSIG avings watches, crystal, leather goods and liquor as the most popular items. Destination Jamaica 2006/07 • 111 pgs111-138_Duty-Free Shopping D U T Y- F R E E 06/02/06 Page 112 S H O P P I N G Why is it such a big industry (US$120 million-a-year), you may wonder? Start with significant savings. You can literally shop till you drop (on the nearest beach) because duty-free, tax-free prices are 20 to 60 percent less than U.S. prices. Then there’s service. Knowledgeable and friendly Jamaican jewelers make it easy to fit you to something comfortable — like a dazzling diamond or designer watch, in no time. “Once people discover what we have to offer, they come back to us again and again,” says Kumar Samtani, president of the Duty Free Association of Jamaica. “After all, this is a business of trust, of merchants standing behind their merchandise.” Oh the joy of exploring Jamaica’s fine shops! You can choose from more product in one location than you may see in a lifetime. With showcase after showcase of designer jewelry and watches, French perfumes and fine crystal, it may be beyond your imagination, so where do you start? Start with this publication, where you’ll find accurate information, reliable merchants and pages of interesting advertisements. Visit the plazas and browse. Make a plan and don’t be misdirected by taxi or bus drivers. And remember that shopping is for all to enjoy. “One of the wonderful things about Jamaica is couples can relax. Everyone feels like a newlywed,” says Samtani. “They have time together that they don’t have at home — time to choose gifts for each other and to make memories.” Consider one of the fine duty-free stores in Ocho Rios. A couple sips a little cognac. The shop owner brings his jeweler’s loupe and invites them to take a closer look. The diamond is cut so exquisitely, it has nearly twice as many facets as any they have ever seen. In another shop, the owner considers introducing a new gemstone to 112 • 5:23 PM Once you go, you know. the Caribbean. So can Gabrielle Diamonds, with their extraordinary faceting by one of the world’s most famous diamond cutting families, the Tolkowskys. Bring on the pearls: white ones, black ones and flesh tones. Maybe the grays are the subtlest of all. Top-ofthe-line Mikimoto pearls come dutyfree. A strand that costs US$5,100 in the U.S. and Europe can be found for about US$3,500. Still haven’t found the thing that strikes just the right note? Who crafts these unique pieces? The Italian geniuses of Carrera y Carrera and the famous Harry Winston are two. A Neiman Marcus favorite, John Hardy, has his jewelry made in Bali, where it takes an hour for an artist to complete one inch of the signature braid of precious metals. Judith Jack is for those who love marcasite. The work of Wendy Brigade is less well known, since much of it goes to private clients such as Kevin Costner and Rene Russo. While watching a film starring Ms. Russo, one Jamaican jeweler knew he had to find the creator of a certain pearl necklace. “Wendy Brigade doesn’t work with many retailers. I am absolutely delighted to be able to present her,” he says. Shops have showcase after showcase of glittering gold and silver chains. And don’t forget handbags. Chopard bags, with butterfly wings embossed over pastel leathers, start at US$800. In Europe or the U.S. they would be 25 percent higher. There are more fine things: Mont Blanc pens, glassware, porcelain and crystal. Several of the stores include such goodies. Crystal is Bijoux territory. One duty-free jeweler explains, “In the last few years crystal jewelry has come into its own.” Lalique and Baccarat bracelets, butterfly brooches and red heart pendants are irresistible. Something at Bijoux will surely make you laugh or cry — a Lladró clown, a school of Lalique angel fish in mad pinks and teals, or that Daum glass vase in greens and lavenders so subtle that it must have been sketched by the impressionist Claude Monet. Plus, there are vases and wine glasses by Baccarat, Swarovski and Waterford. Fragrances are also popular. You’ll find almost everything from Anne Klein to Calvin Klein duty-free. Classics such as Chanel #5 are here in abundance. Perfumes, eaux de toilette, even gift boxes are available duty-free in Jamaica, discounted 30-40 percent. How did this business begin? A patriarch of the duty-free market remembers a time when “there were only 20 or 30 cars in Montego Bay. Our business was almost exclusively seasonal, serving the Rockefellers and a very few others. As people fell in love with Jamaica, and tourism grew, so did our business.” Give yourself time to enjoy the shops and have a good look. Get out of the hotel. No hotel can offer the depth or breadth of products that the duty-free shops can. Montego Bay has two major dutyfree shopping areas. Downtown’s City Centre is among the premier complexes. In a one block area, recommended merchants — Casa de Oro, The Presita Shops, The Royal Shop, and Tropicana — display an array of merchandise for discriminating buyers. The trip is well worth the few minutes it might take from some hotels. Half Moon Shopping Village is Montego Bay’s most upscale, a short drive from Half Moon Golf, Tennis & Beach Club and other hotels in the Rose Hall area. The architectural design, with domed turrets, brick walkways and luxurious landscaping, stands against the backdrop of the blue sea. At Half Moon you’ll find several duty-free stores — Bijoux, Casa de Oro, DJ06_Map 06/05/06 10:46 AM Page 115 Destination Jamaica 2006/07 • 115 DJ06_Map 06/05/06 10:57 AM Page 116 Trop_Mont Blanc Page 116 116 • Once you go, you know. These glittering stones are spectacular enough to make their appearance regularly among top-ten lists of diamonds. 1. Koh-I-Noor (“Mountain Of Light”) a 105.6 carat diamond dating to 1304, this stone may have the most ancient history of all. The Koh-I-Noor is originally from India. Legend has it the stone was part of the throne of Shah Jehan, before being presented to Queen Victoria. It is currently part of the British Crown jewels. 2. The Great Star of Africa is the largest of the stones cut from the mother of all diamonds, the 3,106carat Cullinan. It adorned the sceptre of King Edward VII and now rests in the Tower of London along with the rest of the British Crown Jewels. 3. The Centenary is the world’s largest flawless, colorless, modern-cut diamond. Master diamond cutter Gabi Tolkowsky and his team spent nearly three years cutting the stone. In 1999, the Centenary was sold to an anonymous buyer for a sum estimated at $90-$100 million. No one has seen the diamond since. 4. The Sancy, weighing in at 55 carats, has a most illustrious history. Discovered in India, the stone had made its way to Constantinople by 1570. It has been owned by England’s royal Stuarts, France’s King Louis XIV, Russia’s Prince Demidoff, and in more modern times, England’s Lady Astor, to name but a few. Today it is displayed in Paris’ Louvre museum. 5. The Regent weighed in at 410 carats in the rough. It was first purchased by British Prime Minister William Pitt. Before too long the gem was in the hands of the French, or rather in the crown of their king. After the French Revolution, Napoleon set the stone into his sword. Today, the diamond rests at the Louvre museum. 6. A flattened, pear-shaped diamond weighing 70.20 carats is known 118 • Once you go, you know. as The idol’s Eye. Legend has it the stone was actually set in the eye of an idol. Another tale tells of the Sheik of Kashmir using the gem to ransom a beloved princess. More recently the stone has been in the hands of Denver Post heiress May Bonfils Stanlon. 7. The mysterious Blue Hope (pictured), a 45.52-carat diamond, is said to carry a curse. Once the diamond belonged to France’s King Louis XIV and was known as the “blue diamond of the crown.” The Hope diamond picked up its accursed reputation after being stolen during the French Revolution. Henry Philip Hope bought the stone after it turned up in London in 1830. As the story goes, all who have owned the diamond, from the Hope family on have suffered misfortune. Today, the stone is on permanent display at the Smithsonian Institution, in Washington, D.C. 8. The Golden Jubilee is a wonder of the modern diamond world. An intense yellowbrown 545.67carat diamond (approximately the size of a baseball), the Golden Jubilee was presented to Thailand’s King Bhumibol Adulyadej in honor of his 50th year on the throne. Currently, the Golden Jubilee diamond is mounted in the Thai Royal Sceptre. 9. The Taylor-Burton Diamond recalls one of the great romances of the 20th Century between Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor. Burton presented the 69.42-carat pear-shaped diamond to his beloved. After the Taylor-Burton split, Elizabeth Taylor sold the diamond to raise money for a hospital in Botswana. 10. Rumored to have been stolen out of the eye of a god in an ancient Hindu temple, the Orloff Diamond weighs 186.60 carats. The world’s fourth largest diamond was finally presented to Russia’s Catherine the Great.Today, the Orloff can be found among the treasures in the Russian Diamond Fund. — Courtesy of House of Diamonds Colors Jewellers, The Royal Shop, Tajmahal’s and Tropicana — as well as linen shops, boutiques, even a store devoted to Bob Marley. A carat, equal to 200 milligrams, describes the unit of weight of the stone. Diamonds come in a rainbow of colors. Usually colored diamonds are rarer than white diamonds, and some, like pink diamonds are very expensive. Clarity refers to inclusions, flaws and identifying characteristics such as crystals, clouds or feathers. Of course, the clearer the stone, the higher the value. Longing for Pearls Put these on and feel like you’ve arrived at the “pearly gates.” The best pearls glow from within. Mikimoto pearls are grown in various shapes and sizes inside special oysters in seas and rivers around the world. For example, there are round and princess cuts (the most popular cuts) as well as marquis and oval. Ask questions then decide what factors are most important to you. Merchants can provide a loupe to magnify the stone for inspection. Remember, diamonds are a girl’s best friend. 128 • Once you go, you know. A Billion Absolut(e)s Talk about a numbers games.
