From its humble beginnings when a dedicated mother held meetings in her living room to a thriving agency that now serves more than 2,500 people each year, NAMI Fox Valley has continued to provide valuable programs and services true to its mission of providing peer support, breaking the stigma of mental illness and offering hope for recovery. Our agency has seen tremendous expansion, becoming the largest affiliate in the state of Wisconsin and nationally recognized for its innovation. As NAMI Fox Valley revisited its strategic plan, the board and staff determined that it was time to ask the community what it wants from NAMI Fox Valley. In the fourth quarter of 2012, we launched a quality assurance initiative that evaluated community needs, began a stronger evaluation process to assess the effectiveness of our programs and services, and made strides to incorporate the most up-to-date mental health practices. We completed a survey of consumers, family members and community members that indicated clear trends of our community’s desires and needs in programming and services. With this feedback, NAMI Fox Valley will be re-launching and rolling out a new menu of offerings in 2013. This year’s program guide incorporates our continued offerings of signature programs (like Peer-to-Peer, Family-to-Family, CIT and CIP) and describes new programs and services based on YOUR feedback. In 2013, you will see that all of NAMI Fox Valley’s programs are built upon the foundation of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s model of mental health recovery. This working definition was created with a collaborative team of mental health providers, advocates, family members and consumers in recovery. SAMHSA has defined recovery as: “A process of change through which individuals improve their health and wellness, live a self-directed life, and strive to reach their full potential.” According to SAMHSA, this “practical, comprehensive working definition of recovery would enable policy makers, providers, and others to better design, deliver, and measure integrated and holistic services to those in need, promote greater public awareness and appreciation for the importance of recovery and establish widespread support for the services that can make recovery a reality for millions of Americans.” You can learn more about recovery, its dimensions and principles at www.samhsa.gov/recovery/ or by taking NAMI Fox Valley’s new course, Recovery 101. We are excited to provide hope, help and services and programs informed by the concept and practice of recovery in 2013 and beyond! Mental Illness 101 What is mental illness? What is mental health? This informative, 40-minute presentation by NAMI staff provides an overview of mental illness, including the categories of mental illness; their incidence and biological basis; treatment and recovery; the adverse effects of stigma; the importance of advocacy; and NAMI Fox Valley’s role in the community to improve the quality of life of those affected by mental illness. This program can be presented on its own or with Recovery 101 and NAMI Fox Valley 101. NAMI Family-to-Family Education Program January 8 – March 26: Tuesday evenings March 11 – June 3: Monday evenings July 10 – September 25: Wednesday evenings September 9 – November 25: Monday evenings This nationally-acclaimed, evidence-based education program is a 12-week course designed for family members of persons living with a serious mental illness. Participants learn about the major mental illnesses, brain biology and brain function. Family members learn how to handle and de-escalate crisis situations with their loved one; how medications work; and how to more effectively communicate with their loved one to feel like they are on the same ‘recovery team.’ This course is taught by trained volunteers whose family members have been affected by mental illness. This course empowers family members by providing them with the tools and resources for offering support, understanding their loved one’s situation, and joining them on their journey. NAMI Vets’ Family-to-Family Education Program Watch our website and newsletter for course date offerings. Families of active service members make adjustments when their loved one is called to serve, but further adjustments are often required when the family reunites after a call of duty. This course incorporates the NAMI signature Family-to-Family Education Program materials, but also includes education and support on issues unique to the needs of Veterans and their families, like expanded resources and information on Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). NAMI Peer-to-Peer Education Program January 16 – March 20: Wednesdays April 2 – June 4: Tuesdays June 12 – August 21: Wednesdays September 12 – November 14: Thursdays This 10-week education course focuses on mental health recovery and is for any person with a mental illness. We utilize the information gained in Peer-to-Peer to create an individualized recovery plan that goes beyond relapse prevention. This trauma-informed program focuses on the individual needs of the participants to plan for and create a life of physical and mental wellness. Ending the Silence Call NAMI Fox Valley for more information. In 2012, NAMI Fox Valley piloted this outreach presentation for high school students that provides information on the signs and symptoms of mental illnesses, helps teens learn mental health coping skills, and reduces stigma through personal stories. The program was created and developed by NAMI DuPage County, Illinois. In Our Own Voice Contact NAMI Fox Valley to schedule a presentation. This recovery-education program is presented by two adults living with mental illness who share their personal stories. These presentations are a practical tool to educate and increase awareness about the true nature of mental illness while also breaking down stigma. Powerful and hopeful, this sharing of recovery stories is appropriate for all audiences from the classroom to the boardroom. Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) Training March 18 – 22 September 16 – 20 This 40-hour course for law enforcement is designed to inform them about mental illness so that in times of crisis, they recognize the issues and utilize nonviolent de-escalation techniques, minimizing the potential for harm to the consumer, the officer or the general public.
