Ivanhoe Council tackles
right-of-way issues

Ivanhoe City Council
met Thursday, December
13 at 7 p.m. with two of its
newly appointed council
members, David Baier and
Tom Welch.
Council brought up a
citizen of Ivanhoe that has
placed logs in a right of way
near her fence. Council said
that she had put the logs
there in an attempt to keep
drivers that are inebriated
or otherwise from hitting
her fence. C.D Woodrome

pointed out, though, that
the logs are located on the
city’s right of way.
“That creates a liability to
the city,” Woodrome said.
“I asked her if we would be
able to move those logs up
to the fence, which would
put them on her property,
but she prefers them being
out closer to the road.”
The council decided that
the logs could not stay in
the right of way and that
she would receive a written
letter requesting that the
logs be moved. If they are

not moved in 30 days, the
city will move them at her
expense.
“If we move those back a
bit closer to the fence, they
will be outside of the right of
way area,” Woodrome said.
In other business, council
discussed imposing a Fireworks ban within the city
limits because of the lack
of rain.
“I bring this before the
council tonight because we
are in a dry condition,” said
councilman Mark Elliot.

building. The board approved various financial
and tax reports and went
over campus improvement
plans.
Each Principal from the
district put together an
improvement plan for their
campus and presented in to
the board.
Neil Hennigan, High
School principal, presented his improvement plan
first and told the board that
they will stick to the things
that have worked in the
past and make adjustments
to the items that didn’t.
“We took the previous
plan and looked through
it and since we have a new
vision this year we have
new goals and objectives,”
Hennigan said. “We took
those existing strategies
and matched them up with
out new goals and objectives.”
The middle school principal reported on their
new improvement plan
as well and said that they
will make technolog y
an important part of the
classroom.
“We are looking at ‘Bring
Your Own Technology,”
he said. “We have a lot of
kids who already have their
smart phones, tablets and
things of that sort so we
are looking at training the
teachers so they can feel
comfortable with how we
implement the technology
the kids already have. This
doesn’t mean we will sit the
kids down in front of their
cell phones and tablets, but
how they can incorporate
that into their everyday
life.”
The goals of the intermediate campus were also
discussed, and principal
Cooley laid out several
objectives that they would
be pursuing.
“ We w a n t s t u d e n t
test and touch those kids
in a different educational
ways than what we have
been previously. I think we
have a good team here, and
it has been a good process.
I appreciate the work they
have put in.”
In other business, the
board approved the November 2012 financial
report, November 2012 tax
report, investment report,
and the financial audit
report.
The next board meeting
will be held on January
21, 2013 at 7 p.m in the
administration building.

of the principals for doing
such a good job with the

Shooting prompts focus on school emergency plans
AUSTIN — Soon after news broke
of a mass shooting by a lone gunman
at a Connecticut elementary school
on Dec. 14, Gov.
Rick Perry asked
Texas Education
Commissioner
Michael Williams to direct
Texas school districts to review
Capitol Highlights their emergency
operation plans.
By
“It is esEd
sential that
Sterling
we ensure all
Texas schools
are equipped and
ready to carry out a strategic plan to
secure the safety of students and staff
in the event of a threat such as the one
that occurred today,” Perry said.
Perry also referred school districts to
the Texas School Safety Center at Texas
State University in San Marcos as a resource to assist in developing a plan of
response or improving an existing plan.
A 2005 state law requires school
districts and public junior colleges to
adopt and implement a multi-hazard
emergency operations plan that includes
district employee training and mandatory school drills to prepare students
and employees for responding to an
emergency.
In a statement of condolence following
the Connecticut shooting in which 20
schoolchildren and six adults were killed,
Perry said,“The fact that so many victims
were children weighs heavily upon the
hearts and souls of each Texan and every
American.”
Texas’ chief law enforcement officer,
Attorney General Greg Abbott, had
this to say:
“As a board member of the Texas School
Safety Center, I am committed to making
sure educators, students and law enforcement are working together to prepare
Texas schools for the unthinkable. We
must not wait until it’s too late to act.
We remind all schools to review their
school safety plan to ensure they have
proper procedures to keep students and
campuses safe.”
Speaker draws challenger
Joe Straus, R-San Antonio, speaker
of the 150-member Texas House of
Representatives for the 2009 and 2011
legislatures, is seeking a third term in
that high office.
Competition for the leadership role
comes in the form of Republican David
Simpson of Longview, who is entering
his second two-year term representing
House District 7.
State Rep. Bryan Hughes, R-Mineola,
earlier had announced his candidacy for
the speakership, but on Dec. 10, Hughes
withdrew and announced his support of
Simpson for speaker.
Simpson in effect said the race would
not be about conservative credentials so
much as style in administering the rules
of the House in allowing what legislation
reaches the House floor for debate.
On Jan. 8, opening day of the 83rd
Texas Legislature, a vote will be called
to choose who is to be the next speaker,
as a matter of routine business.
“I liked this better than Williamsburg!”
So as the year begins to wind down I want
to thank each of you who have supported our
activities and events during the year. Thank
you to those of you who have joined the
Tyler County Heritage Society. Thanks to
those of you who volunteered to adopt one
of the Village’s buildings and have kept it in
squeaky clean condition for our guests.Thank
you, docents. You have really been busy this
year; we figure we have hosted more than
2000 school students and this doesn’t count
other groups.Thank you,demonstrators;you
add so much to our presentations. Thank
you members of the Tyler County Board of
Directors for the behind the scenes work that
you provide to help the Village run smoothly.
Thank those of you who adopted a circus
poster. As of the Board meeting on Monday
we had 10 that still need to be adopted. You
might think about one of these for that special
person your list for whom it is difficult to
find something different and suitable.
Thank you, Ofeira Gazzaway, our Village
director. You have so much energy that
you wear all of us out! We are fortunate to
have you guiding all we do. Thanks, also to
John Gazzaway; since his retirement from
“making money” he has been busy doing
many things around the Village.
Thank you, Durwood Ling, for your many
hours of work on the Fiber Arts Building.

A Civil War Journal
In early 1861, W.W. Heartsill of Marshall, Texas, marched off to war with W.P. Lane’s
Rangers of the Confederate Army. During the four years, one month and one day that
he spent at war, Heartsill managed to keep a diary of each day.
Throughout his service, he carried with him a small memorandum book with this notation on the flyleaf: “If I am killed, or if by any mishap this book is lost, please send it to my
father, A. Heartsill, Louisville, East Tennessee.”
When Heartsill filled up one of the books, he sent it home to Marshall for safekeeping. “Scores of times, I was as wet as water could make me, as these books bear evidence.
Sometimes my book would come all to pieces after a soaking, and as it was being written
with a pencil, I had to retrace with a pen when the opportunity was offered.”
Heartsill’s journals are mirrors of camp life and the trials and pleasures he endured as a
private in the Confederate ranks.
When he came home, he began printing the pages of his diaries, completing the work
in 1876.
Heartsill’s recollections show war in its horror and occasional moments when the soldiers
in Lane’s Rangers laughed at the antics of their fellow soldiers.
In November of 1861, Heartsill wrote: “Today, we attended the funeral of a soldier, a
solemn, sad duty.”
On Sunday, July 11, Heartsill wrote that Confederate and Union troops clashed near
the Arkansas River with only 4,000 Confederate soldiers facing “70,000 of the Yanks.”
During the battle, the Confederates’hospital was set afire,“killing two of our surgeons and
a wounded man who was being operated upon by the surgeons.”
“Such agony, such, such horror and so many deaths; how many of our brave comrades
perished in this frightful tragedy, heaven alone will reveal.”
During the battle,Heartsill wrote than Lane’s Rangers“are not recognized as Confederate
soldiers, but will be teated as guerrillas from the fact that we are an independent company.”
On July 12th, Heartsill wrote that,”oh, how hungry we are.” He said “we all are supplied
with a liberal breakfast composed entirely of river water.”At noon, he said,“we receive the
same for dinner that we got for breakfast” and in the evening, the Rangers finally got “a
good supply of fat bacon and hard tack, which is the only food that we have had for 84
hours.”
The Rangers were captured by the Union troops and loaded aboard a ship with Arkansas
soldiers. “Every man is looking for news about an exchange (for Yankee soldiers held by
the South).”
Heartsill made it through the war and he and his fellow soldiers were mustered out of
service on May 20, 1865, in Harrison County, Texas.

Most folks can make a pretty big
deal out of “dining on quail.”
Those who’d term it “dining” on quail
might not like the Monk Edwards
Home on the Range Recipe but as
Monk would’ve said: “They ain’t got
no culture.”
I’ve eaten Monk’s quail. He’s right.
First of all, let me tell you that
Monk did not fry the quail. He and
Dad killed almost all of ‘em, certainly cleaned and dressed all. Mom
cooked the quail. Monk did have
a secret ingredient or two to boost
Mom’s culinary expertise which, as
you might expect, is second to none.
Monk’s cooking capability was mere
subsistence.
Now, you begin to understand and
appreciate the great delineation of
quality in this entire process.
Another factor you need to consider
quickly in beginning to better discern
all facets of this “tale” is that Monk
was a bachelor, a carpenter-handyman,
who lived alone most of his life. His
abode was a ramshackle house that
Monk probably cleaned once or twice
a year, for appearances, mind you. Not
that it needed it or anything so likely.
So, per Mother’s requirement, the
quail cooking took place at our home
and, I do believe, Monk took a bath
in honor of the occasion.
His table manners reflected both his
great desire for such a delicacy, cooked
so well, and for his best awareness in
whose home, Miss Ruth’s (My Mom’s),
he was eating. I think he only burped
twice (“Not bad manners, just good
food!”).
The dining table was a sumptuous
layout that would dramatically tempt
the least ravenous of appetites.
Monk was our only guest and he
joined, Dad, Mom, and Sons #1, #2
and #3. I’m #1, the eldest of what
finally became a quartet of boys.
He was overwhelmed to be in a home,
whose patriarch and matriarch he held
in high regard.
Of course, the three sons loved such
a gathering, which incorporated both
manhood and Mom’s great cooking so
strongly in one event.
Most diners would expect a menu
that would, of course, stress the “featured dish,” as Mom had with the
quail. But, as usual, there was a second
meat offered. I don’t remember the
“sides” for sure, but I know there were
at least four, plus a couple of breads
and two desserts.
It’s likely the desserts were chocolate
cake and coconut pie. In a country
home, the breads were almost certainly
homemade yeast rolls and cornbread.
And, for pure cityslickers there was a
stash of “light bread” in the pantry.
Peas — blackeyed, crowder of field —
were a menu standard, as likely were
turnip greens. Often there was a corn
dish: on the cob, or cut from it and
bearing a sweeter flavor. Sometimes,
the peas were unshelled and Mom’s
recipe contained something that
brought a “to-die-for” flavor.

Of course, it took a while for a family to build a “stock” of quail if you
didn’t to at it wholesale. Most likely,
a couple of hunters/families pooled
their resources and had one giant
cook-off. It was a stroke of luck for
Monk to be friends with someone like
my family. While he might provide
a larger share of quail and of labor
in preparation, Monk benefitted by
Mother’s cooking capabilities and by
our provision of other meal elements,
not to mention facilities.
Such a spread was a huge treat for
someone like Monk and, while he
remained on his top behavior and
maintained his manners, he obviously
felt as all us country boys were wont
to say — “like he’d died and gone to
heaven.”

“We have had a little bit of rain, but I don’t think we have had an
adequate amount of rain, and if we are going to do something about
it we have to do it at this meeting.”
Mayor Jack Brockhouse met with Emergency Management Coordinator Dale Freeman earlier in the week and checked in with
the Texas Forest Service Drought conditions, and said that we are
in moderate fire danger, but are a long way from being in extreme
danger.
“The county plans to make no moves on banning fireworks County
wide,” Brockhouse said.
Council ultimately decided not to impose an official ban on fireworks, but will warn citizens that they would prefer them not to
use aerial fireworks within the city limits during the holidays.
The next city council meeting will be held on January 10, 2012 at

Common Cents...by Don Jackson
Today, as a result of the horrific events that happened in New
Town, Connecticut, I am getting on our school intercom to make
an important announcement. Just before our moment of silence
and pledge of allegiance to our flags, I want to tell our students
and staff that if they choose to pray they may do so. We have the
perfect time set aside, as each day we have a moment of silence. As
the administrator on my campus I truly understand the differences
between church and state, but it is my belief that prayer is always
appropriate.
In our school district all campuses have what we call Crisis Management Plans. Well, the thing about this plan is it is a plan that
is implemented as a result of a crisis occurring. This plan will not
prevent a crisis from happening, but it does help us to have some
fore thought of the appropriate actions to take. Crisis Management
Plans are designed to accomplish our most important goal which is
the safety and welfare of our students. The contents of these plans
are practiced on a monthly basis and they basically involve moving
students to different positions in the building or instructing them
how to exit the building in the event of an emergency.
However, the plan will not stop bad weather from occurring or a
determined perpetrator from entering the building and trying to
harm our precious children. It is just so unfortunate for any of us
to be at the mercy of any determined evil person who is willing to
give his or her life in order to take others lives. Never did I imagine
that we would live in a world where people would fly airplanes into
buildings or enter an elementary school and gun down little babies.
These things are simply out of our control and we have to resort to
damage control.
Well my friends, I don’t know about you but I have been taught
to pray over the things that I can’t control. I can’t control how different people think and how different people act, but I can pray
for the safety and welfare of my students each and every day. I can
also pray for divine direction in the event that some evil intruder
decides to come on campus
to do harm to any child.
As educators it is our job
to give all that we have to
help positively influence
the life of our students.
Well, due to this fact, I have
a new hero and her name
is Dawn Hochsprung. She
was the principal at Sandy
Hook Elementary in New
Town, Connecticut. This
dedicated woman died
trying to help her students.
She, like us left her home
not knowing what she had
to face on that dreadful day.
Well, some things happen
and the images of it quickly
fade away, but then again some things happen and the memory
lasts forever. As I look into the faces of the children who attend my
campus, I will forever be reminded just how important my job is.
It is my hope that the faith and unity of people all over the world
is strengthened by these horrible circumstances and we lean and
depend on God for comfort and strength. God is the only one who
can control the things that are out of our control.
Today, as I enter the school building where I work, I already know
one change that I am making. Our moment of silence will be a full
minute of silence and I will tell our staff and students that if they
choose to pray a silent prayer, it would be just fine with me because
prayer is always appropriate.

Helping The
Helpless
Jesus was the One Who went about doing good.
He was always helping the helpless. Shouldn’t
that be our mission?
Recently we had the opportunity to help some
children who are helpless. All of them come from
terrible backgrounds and what was done to most
of them is not something we can print. Needless to say we wanted to make these children’s
life a little more bearable. We were involved in
this ministry years ago with the Sinclair Center. However, our friends Rosie and Ron Keef
were instrumental in getting us the community
involved in this very worthwhile ministry.
For over fifty-five years my family has been
involved in helping support Sunny Glen Children’s Home in San Benito, Texas. That home
became one of my dad’s favorite charities. Because Mother and Dad believed in helping the
helpless my brother and sister and I established
a memorial fund in their name to help defray
expenses when children are admitted to that
home.
When a young girl says she never had new
clothes, she never had new shoes, she never had a
Bible and she never had Christmas in her young
life; it breaks your heart.
Someone named Scrooge will say it takes too
much to take care of these children. I have asked
how much it takes to take care of your children.
My grandmother Emmy used to say a cur dog
would take care of its pups. Only humans abuse their
offspring. Sad but true!
What would Jesus do? You know what He
would do. You know He scolded His disciples
when they tried to prevent children from coming
to Him. But Jesus called them to him, saying, “Let
the children come to me, and do not hinder them, for
to such belongs the kingdom of God (Luke 18:16).

Ladyjackets buzz over High Island
By: Wendy Whitworth
December 11 the Chester Ladyjackets traveled to
High Island to take on the
Lady Cardinals for their first
district game. The Lady Cardinals immediately brought
their best to the court hoping
to gain a strong lead over the
Ladyjackets, but they were no
match for Chester’s powerful
offense and defense. Tyra
Adair was able to catch the
Cardinal defense off guard
to make an assist to Timber
Wright to score. Laken Read
and Maddie Read worked
together offensively to also
put points on the board. With
multiple steals and rebounds,
the Ladyjackets were able
to dominate the first half
leading High Island 26-24.
The third quarter started
off very strong for the Ladyjackets. They launched a
full on attack keeping High
Island under their wing and
only allow them to score one
point. The Ladyjackets took
an aggressive control of the
ball to score 17 points. The
Lady Cardinals continued
to fight for the ball in the
fourth quarter, but the Ladyjackets ultimately kept their
lead. Laken Read dominated
with offensive rebounds and
Maddie Read with defensive
rebounds. Timber Wright
was high point scorer with
25 points. The final score
was 48-32 with the win for
the Ladyjackets.
Friday, December 14, the
L ad y j ac k e t s t o ok on t h e
Centerville Lady Bulldogs at
Centerville. This game was
added to the schedule as a
non-district game. Tyra Adair
and Timber Wright started
the first quarter each scoring
two points for the Ladyjackets. Wright drew in a foul to
add two more points. Kyrstin
Jobe makes an awesome pass
to Jaci Davis who pushed
through the Bulldog defense
to score another two points
to tie the score 12 all. Both
teams continued to play very
aggressively and accumulate
multiple fouls. The half ended with the Ladyjackets down
16-21. Jobe started the third
quarter with an assist to Adair
for a basket. Maddie Read and
Destiny Kuehn also assisted
Adair for two more baskets.
The Ladyjackets started the
fourth quarter with a fighting
determination to win. Adair
and Wright hit several free
throws to add points. Kuehn
moved quickly to steal the ball
and drove down court for an
excellent lay-up and Shelby
Pate performed an awesome
jump shot. The Ladyjackets
were not out played, just out
scored. Final score 35-46.
The Yellowjackets took on
Crimson Christian Tuesday,
December 11, in L ufkin.
The first quarter started off
a little slow for the Jackets
resulting in the Crimson
defense holding them to only
five points. By the second
quarter, they began playing
more collectively as a team.
They were pushing harder
to close the point gap. Kris
Kuehn, Levi Watts and Tyler
Cherry collectively scored 12
points. The Yellowjackets
were more settled offensively
in the second half. They attacked the basket better than
they had thus far. The Jackets
were able to draw in fouls to
get to the free throw line. J.J.
Cowan, Kuehn, Watts, Cherry
and Tyran Adair were able to
score 17 points in this half.
Although the Yellowjackets
put up an impressive fight,
they were defeated by Crimson Christian 34-46.
The Yellowjackets also took
on the Centerville Bulldogs
Friday. Coach Fudge states,
“We did not shoot the ball
well at all. We ran the offense
well, we got our open shots,
but we just could not make our
shots. We got to the free throw
line, but did not convert. We
had a few too many turnovers,
but overall I was happy with
how we handled the ball. We
did a good job on defense,
but we did not rebound the
ball. We have to get better
at getting into position and
fighting for the rebound.”
Leading scorer for this game
was Kris Kuehn. Final score
13-53. The Yellowjackets will
play their first district game
on December 18.
Chester Jr. High Boys and
girls played Good Samaritan
Fred Monday Dec. 10. The Jr.
High Jackets are improving
on defense and doing a good
job of running the offense.
Cord Neal was the leading
scorer for this game with 13
points. The final score 25-29
with a loss for Chester.
The girls started off a little
slow but came on strong in
the fourth quarter scoring
ten points. LaPorsha George
racked up eight points, six of
which were at the three point
line. The Jr. High Ladyjackets
lost 18-30.
The varsity girls and boys will
play Burkeville there starting
at 6:00 p.m.

JV Lady Warriors fight the Wildcats
By: Mitchell McCluskey
UNLOADING OUR
SECOND FRIDGE
HELPED US STOCK UP
ON GROCERIES.
The junior varsity Lady Warriors
basketball team played against
the Kirbyville Wildcats on December 11 . Both teams came
prepared for an intense game, and
delivered both an entertaining
and competitive game.
Freshman Devan Barnett
jumped for the ball, an attempt
which proved to be successful as
her team was able to make the
first goal in the game, via Autumn
Sims. Kirbyville refused to let
their opponents lead the way, so
they threw in two shots to place
them ahead. Barnett went for
an ideal lay up for her team, as
they strived to regain the lead.
Haleigh Moore, Chelsea Gordon, and Kaitlin McCluskey all
contributed points for the Lady
Warriors, who were in the lead at
the end of the first quarter, with
the score at 12-10.
The second quarter started off
well for the Lady Warriors, with
Gordon making a three-point
shot, expanding their lead ahead
of the Wildcats. The likelihood
of Warren emerging victorious
increased as various members
added free throws to the teams
score; however, Kirbyville was
not willing to give in yet, and
eventually progressed ahead of
Warren, turning the situation to
their favor by the end of the first
half, with a score of 19-23. The Lady Warriors had significant ground to make up in the
third quarter, and gave their best
attempt to do so through excellent cooperative team playing,
with a steady beat of passing and
dribbling the ball. Though this
strategy aided them with moving
the ball around the court, they
were less productive in making
shots. The team was only able to
make four points in this quarter,
a great contrast to Kirbyville’s
eight points added to their score.
Provided with one last opportunity to seize the win, the
Lady Warriors were willing to
give their all in the final quarter.
Barnett made a shot early in the
quarter, but afterwards, her team
struggled to make goals to accompany it. The Wildcats were
not faced with this problem, as
they were quite prolific in their
goals.Though Warren’s effort was
top notch, the team finally lost to
Kirbyville, with the final score at
25-36. The JV and varsity teams
will play again on December 21
against Kountze at home. The
boys’ basketball teams will also
play at home against Kountze on
December 21.

Barker, Jackson lead
Lady Dogs in big win
By: Chance Bailey
The Lady Dogs had a bit of
a break last week, playing only
one game as opposed to their
normal two games per week
schedule. Colmesneil looked
quite impressive, though, as they
dismantled Orange Community
Christian, 72-16.The Lady Dogs
came out with their foot on the
gas, and they never let up. Taylor
Barker had a huge game, posting
30 points, her third game this
season with 30 or more points.
Point guard Treasure Jackson
also had a good game, posting
21 points, her highest total of
the season. The Lady Dogs have
an 11-3 record and will look
to improve on that this week.
The Colmesneil boys’ basketball team traveled to Kirbyville
last Tuesday. The Bulldogs were
without Brandon Cowart in this
game due to an ankle injury, and
they had a tough time making
up for it in the loss against the
Wildcats. On Friday, Cowart
returned as the Bulldogs hosted
Corrigan. Colmesneil was a huge
underdog in this game, but they
kept grinding throughout the
contest and were able to shock
Corrigan, 51-48, earning their
seventh win of the season. In
the Bulldogs next game, they
will host Orange Community
Christian on Friday, December
21 at 5 p.m.

Hospitals’DecemberVolunteer
We congratulate Ruth Stewart
for being named Tyler County
Hospital Auxiliary’s December
2012 Volunteer of the Month.
Drenda Pool, the November
2012 Volunteer of the Month,
presented Ruth with her corsage.
Ruth joined the TCHA in December of 2003, and has assisted
in both the Wildflower Gift Shop
and the Emergency Room, along
with donating countless hours to
the Auxiliary’s local fund raisers.
When asked why she became a
TCHA volunteer, Ruth stated
she feels it is important that
our city have a hospital and she
wishes to show her support.
TCH Auxiliary Volunteers
provide much needed services
to the hospital, as well as raise
money through the Wildflower
Gift Shop in the hospital and
various local fundraisers. All
monies earned by the Auxiliary
go toward Tyler County Hospital’s LVN School scholarships
and/or purchases of equipment
and furniture benefiting both
inpatients and outpatients of
Tyler County Hospital.
TCHA desperately needs new
volunteers. If you can spare as
little as 3 hours per week, and
would like to become a TCH
Auxiliary Volunteer, applications
are available in the Tyler County
Hospital Wildflower Gift Shop.
You would be providing a vital
service to your community.
Please come join us. Tyler
County Hospital Auxiliary is
affiliated with the Texas Associa- Woodville Eyecare celebrated their ribbon cutting and grand opening ceremony on December 15. Dr. Arshia Khan and
tion of Healthcare Volunteers. Dr. Aziz Rahman, and staff were joined by family, friends and members of the Tyler County Chamber of Commerce. They

Wrap Me Up campaign - The nurses and staff at East Texas Home Health, located on Main Street
in Chester, have taken on a huge project close to their hearts. During the winter months the home
health nurses are in a unique position; they see firsthand how so many elderly in the community go cold
during these long winter days and nights. So many of the older population do not have the money to
run their heat, or they just tend to stay cold due to their body temperatures. In either case, East Texas
Home Health has decided to help them this Christmas season. ETHH has been collecting blankets,
gloves, and socks to distribute to those in the area that have need of such items. The “Wrap-Me Up”
campaign will be for anyone, over the age of 65 in need such items to keep warm. East Texas Home
Health not only is offering this for Tyler County residents, but also the surrounding counties during
the months of December and January. The Agency is asking that if you need or if you know of someone
that needs this service, please call East Texas Home Health at 409-200-1866. The office will make sure
your loved one gets “Wrapped-Up” for the winter! If you, your church or civic organization would like
to help with the collection of these much needed items, you may contact Monk at the number listed
above or drop your donations off at Citizens State Bank in Warren or if you are in Woodville, you may
drop them off at Woodville Health & Rehab. “Our nurses see many men and women on a daily basis
and know that many of them will go cold without our help,” said Kristie Martin RN, Chester Branch
Director. “East Texas Home Health is trying to help because we care for the patient, not just because
we are here as a business. We really do care,” she said.

Students at Woodville Intermediate continue to learn what it means to be civically minded by helping with the community Caring
Is Sharing’s annual Food Drive. Once again, WIS students have collected over 1,800 non-perishable items to help feed local families
during the holidays. Mrs. Willmon’s class (pictured above) collected the most with 350 non-perishable items. Ms. McCullough’s
students came in second by collecting 177 items and Mrs. Burkhalter’s class came in third place with 130 items. All of the classes
contributed and did a great job!
Hunter Sonnier from Nederland killed this massive 193 lb. 8pt buck that scored 129-5/8. He was hunting on his deer lease
in the Warren area.
Tyler County has always had
plenty of good food, but there
is a small food-truck located in
Dam-B that is serving up “Redneck Gourmet” that has people
talking. Carol and Jim Dantin,
owners of the Redneck Snack
Shack in Dam-B, say that they
moved to the county 3 years ago
from Rockport, Texas to escape
Hurricane Ike. Since then, they
have fallen in love with the town
and decided to open their own
small business, which has become wildly popular with Tyler
County Residents. Carol Dantin
has cooked for two large ranches
in West Texas, including the
famous McPherson 4M Ranch
and another ranch in Bandera.
She was the chef and foreman,
and has learned the tools of the
trade when it comes to cooking
authentic Texas cuisine. “We love
to cook,” Dantin Says. “We make
our own Boudain, we make our
own hot sauce and Carol makes
the tartar sauce that we use. We try
to home make everything.” The
Redneck Snack Shack offers 31
menu items, including breakfast
all day. Some customer favorites
are the biscuits and gravy, shrimp
po-boys, Cajun hamburgers,
and shrimp brochette. But, the
Dantin’s are always creating new
foods. “In between waiting on
customers, we are working on
new things to serve,” said Carol
Dantin. Alligator Eggs are one
of their recent creations and has
quickly become a staple on the
menu. “We take a strip of bacon
with Cajun seasoning with jalapeños and a Texas tater tot,” Dantin
said. “Then we roll it up and deep
fry it.” The Redneck Snack Sack
also smokes their own meat and
says that they do everything they
can to serve the community. “The
people in this area don’t want to
buy a 9 dollar burger, and I don’t
blame them,” Dantin said. “We
like to make it to where they can
come back and eat with us, and
get their moneys worth.” The
Redneck Snack Shack is located
on Highway 190 near the Dam-B
intersection and begins serving
breakfast at 6a.m.

by U.S. Sen. John Cornyn
“We just got up on Christmas morning…and we’d usually have
an apple and orange in our stockings. That was about the only time
we ever had oranges. I can smell an orange to this day, and it always
makes me think of Christmas. We didn’t get many toys. We got
necessities.”
This was a Christmas memory of Zulieka O’Daniel, who was
born in 1911 and was raised on a farm southwest of Hart, Texas.
Zulieka’s Christmas mornings were much the same for many other
Texas children in the early 1900s. While the settings were simple
and the gifts limited, Christmas inspired the same anticipation and
excitement then that it does for children today.
Elora Riddle, who lived on a farm to the west of Kress, Texas,
recalled that her older siblings traveled into town by buggy to purchase surprise Christmas gifts one year for the younger children in
the family: “Lucindy and Elbert went to town and it snowed and
they couldn’t get back on Christmas Eve. We hung our stockings
on Christmas Eve and Papa and Mama put an orange and an apple,
nuts and candy in, so we had that for Christmas and we thought
that was all we were going to get.” The morning after Christmas,
Elora went to the breakfast table to find a “celluloid doll” at her
place at the table. “We were so happy that Santa came back,” she
said.
In 1920, a third-grader by the name of Mill Boyd of Dumas, Texas,
attended a community Christmas celebration at her schoolhouse.
Instead of individual Christmas celebrations at home, the entire
community would gather at the schoolhouse and Santa would visit all
of Dumas’ children at once. Mill left that year’s gathering in delight,
carting home with her a “wicker doll buggy and a Schoenhut doll.”
According to Mill, the Schoenhut dolls were hand-carved, Germanmade dolls who were “jointed and had real hair.” In addition to the
doll and buggy, Mill also received two boxes of chocolates from her
“little boyfriend” that year. Her mother was not pleased and told
Mill she was too young to receive the chocolates and would have
to return them. Mill’s father, however, interjected, “Leave her alone
now. I’m gonna eat that candy.”
An even earlier Christmas recollection in 1863 by the daughter
of former Texas Governor E.M. Pease, Julia, included a description
of the family Christmas tree: “Not tall and stately as the German
Tannenbaum, but just a common cedar.” Julia recalled that the ladies
of the household spent the weeks leading up to Christmas preparing
the trimmings for the tree, including stringing popcorn. Julia noted
that because of the Civil War, goods had been blockaded from the
North and all food and clothing that year had to be made at home.
In the 1890s, Mrs. W.H. Thaxton of Onion Creek, Texas, told the
Austin American-Statesman that “real”eggnog was served in “liberal
portions”among her family and the neighbors at Christmas. She also
noted that “all laws, short of murder and arson, were suspended for
the time, and many were the mutual misunderstandings that were
settled at Christmastime.” At the end of Christmas day, “dancing
was engaged in, and the nights were enlivened by the merry strains
of the fiddle (not violin), and the calls of the prompter as merrily
the dance went on far into the night.”
Today, as many of us find ourselves caught up in the hustle and
bustle of the holiday season, there is something to be said about the
simplicity of Christmas past in Texas. May we all take the time to
enjoy the small things, the time together with family and friends,
and the real meaning of the season. From my family to yours: Merry
Christmas, happy holidays and best wishes for a safe and prosperous
New Year.
