The Executive Director
A great big thank you to our many supporters in 2014! It is incredible that the foundation celebrated its 20th year in 2014. We have come so far. The journey
however would not have been possible without all of your donations, your time given as volunteers, and your tireless awareness efforts. It is because of YOU,
the Brain Aneurysm Foundation continues to flourish and be a world leader in the fight against brain aneurysms.
2014 was the foundation’s strongest year financially! But equally as important we continued to add support groups, increase events and awareness initiatives,
and award the most number of research grants and the highest level of funding at $230,000. Our monthly webinars remained a wonderful venue for physician
presentations on relevant and cutting edge subjects to large audiences tuning in from various continents. Our third Lobby Day in May had a great crowd who
brought the message of awareness, the importance of early detection, and the need for greater research funding to their Congressional representatives. I also
had the distinct pleasure of meeting Vice President Biden to discuss these issues and ask for his support.
With 20 years behind us, we have a solid base to continue to work together to make the lives of all those affected in some way by a brain aneurysm a better
life; whether it be a survivor, a caregiver, or those that have lost someone. So again, a big thank you to YOU for supporting the mission of the Brain Aneurysm
Foundation. YOU are with us every step of the way as we continue to Raise Awareness and End Fear.
I look forward to the achievements WE will make together in 2015.

I am thrilled to see the many successes of the Brain Aneurysm Foundation after 20 years! I am humbled to have been a part of this organization since its inception.
Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine the tremendous worldwide outreach the BAF would have or the research funding levels to date. The foundation has
distributed over $1,000,0000 in research funding since 2007. In 2014 the largest amount of funding to date, $230,000, was distributed to 11 different research
projects selected through a very competitive process. This funding is crucial to help continued efforts to identify and treat unruptured aneurysms as well as
aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage and its associated complications, such as vasospasm and stroke.
On behalf of the Medical Advisory Board, I congratulate you for all your efforts in 2014. I thank you for your continued support of the Brain Aneurysm Foundation
and your commitment to pursuing research, education, and awareness and support for patients and families of this often devastating disease. I am hopeful 2015
will be as rewarding and that through our research, lives will be saved.

Research Grants
In 2014, the Brain Aneurysm Foundation awarded eleven grants totaling $230,000 supporting our commitment to invest in brain aneurysm research.
The Brain Aneurysm Foundation awards research grants for basic scientific research
directed at early detection, improved treatment modalities, and technological
advances that will ultimately improve outcomes for patients with brain aneurysms. The
foundation’s Research Grant Committee is headed by Robert Rosenwasser, MD, FACS,
Professor of Radiology and Neurosurgery at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.
He, along with other members of the Medical Advisory Board, scores all grant
applications to determine the grant recipients based on the highest scores.

The 2014 grant recipients were awarded their individual grants
at the Eighth Annual Brain Aneurysm Foundation Research Grant
Awards Symposium on September 11, 2014, at The Biltmore in Coral
Gables, Florida. The University of Miami Health System hosted this
wonderful evening..
Awareness and Education
Back on Capitol Hill - Lobbying for Brain Aneurysm Awareness
On May 6, 2014, the Brain Aneurysm Foundation returned to Capitol Hill. We had 50
people, representing 15 states, including: California, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas,
Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia,
Washington and Wisconsin.
Over 80 meetings were held with Members of Congress to garner support for resolutions
in both the House and Senate aimed to designate September as National Brain Aneurysm
Awareness Month. The response and support we received during these meetings was
overwhelmingly positive.
In the meetings we also expressed the importance for Congress to ensure that insurance
companies are required to pay for patient screenings as deemed appropriate by medical
personnel and provide more coverage for rehabilitative care. The event culminated with
our Executive Director, Christine Buckley, meeting with Vice President Joe Biden, a
two-time brain aneurysm survivor. The Brain Aneurysm Foundation was honored to
have the opportunity to meet with him privately and very grateful to all who made the
meeting possible.
Newly Created Awareness and Educational Materials
In conjunction with a complete rebranding of the organization, the Brain Aneurysm
Foundation revised all of our educational and awareness materials in 2014.
Collaborating with ICU nurses we created an ICU packet to provide patients and their
families with recovery resource information to help our partner hospitals provide a
continuum of care to their patients. We launched a 1 in 50 awareness campaign through
social media to highlight the prevalence of this condition to the general public. The
response to both of these initiatives was overwhelmingly positive.
Check Out Our Free App
The Brain Aneurysm Foundation has announced the release of its new mobile application “Brain Aneurysm” for use on Apple and Android devices. The free app, now available for
download on iTunes and Google Play, is designed to provide the general public with useful information about brain aneurysms, whenever and wherever they may need it.
The Brain Aneurysm App was created in conjunction with The Neurosurgical Atlas and Dr. Aaron Cohen-Gadol, a leading neurosurgeon from Goodman Campbell Brain and Spine
and Indiana University Department of Neurosurgery. continued on opposite page
Virtual Library of the Brain Aneurysm Foundation Webinars
The Brain Aneurysm Foundation live webinars have used the power of the Internet to create a
webinar forum where patients can reach experts to discuss important details of their care, and
most importantly, have the ability to ask questions while they are at home, at no cost. The BAF
webinars have been very successful in reaching the above mentioned goals to satisfy the mission
of the Brain Aneurysm Foundation. Dr. Aaron Cohen-Gadol, an aneurysm surgeon and a member
of the BAF Medical Advisory Board, has been moderating these webinars. We continue to receive
very positive feedback from our members who attend these webinars from all over the world.
These webinars are archived and are available for viewing shortly after the presentation of the live
webinar on the BAF website. In 2013 we created a patient library of “Cerebral Vascular Webinars”
and a new physician library of “Cerebral Vascular Webinars” to provide greater accessibility of
these excellent resources.

This new application is an innovative way to increase awareness and educate individuals about brain aneurysms. The app features
educational videos about aneurysms, treatment and recovery and patient advocacy. The app also provides access to a variety of
blogs about brain aneurysms, discussion groups, upcoming events and fundraisers and much more.
Educational Booklets Available in Three Languages
Over 25,000 educational pamphlets for brain aneurysm treatment options and recovery were distributed across the country
and internationally, to medical facilities treating brain aneurysms, as well as our 60 support groups. The booklets are available
in English, Spanish and Chinese. The Chinese translation was provided by: Qiyong Mei, M.D. of Shanghai and proofing by
Rose Du, MD., Ph.D. The Brain Aneurysm Foundation would like to thank Codman Neurovascular and Covidien for providing
the funding for the production of our rebranded and updated patient educational booklets.

Support Services
The Brain Aneurysm Foundation eases the diagnosis, procedural and recovery process for survivors and families by providing phone support,
email support, support groups, our main website, and our support website.
The online support website at www.bafsupport.org was initially launched by the Brain Aneurysm Foundation in 2010. In 2014 membership has increased 20%, with 1,100 new members joining
and now has over 6,500 members, all affected by brain aneurysms either as survivors or family members. This community is now being moderated by Ben’s Friends.
