CSI Community Members The High Holidays are a time of reflection. We look back at the
past year and contemplate our choices for the next year. We
recommit to our Jewish lives.
There is no better way to do this than to attend one of our
programs or take one of our classes. CSI offers many programs
and classes for families, seniors and teenagers!
Want to learn Hebrew? Want to join the Women’s Torah Study
Group? Wondering what to do at CSI while your child is in Junior
Congregation? Wondering who our speakers will be this year?
Look inside for answers to these questions, and more! You’ll be
glad you did!
Rabbi Steven C. Kane
Some good reasons to participate in CSI Community
Programs:
“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you
learn, the more places you'll go.” ― Dr. Seuss
“Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.”
― Benjamin Franklin
“Self-education is, I firmly believe, the only kind of education there is.” ― Isaac
Asimov
“Learning never exhausts the mind.” ― Leonardo da Vinci
“Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other.― John F. Kennedy
“The beautiful thing about learning is that nobody can take it away from
you.” ― B.B. King
“Learning is an ornament in prosperity, a refuge in adversity, and a provision in
old age.” ― Aristotle
“Study it and review it: You will find everything in it. Scrutinize it, grow old
and gray in it, do not depart from it. There is no better portion in life than
this.” ― Ben Bag-Bag (Pirkei Avot 5:24)

10:15-11:30 AM THE POETRY OF YEHUDA AMICHAI
with Dr. Neil Schluger
Yehuda Amichai was the greatest poet in modern Hebrew language and
one of the world’s greatest 20th-century poets. His work has been
translated into 40 languages, he received every major prize awarded by
the State of Israel, including the Israel Prize, and was honored in the
United States, France, Norway, Egypt, and many other countries. He
wrote movingly and very accessibly about Jerusalem, love, Jewish
history, God, war, his own family, and ordinary life. Over four sessions,
we will study and enjoy some of Amichai’s best known poems. Texts will
be provided in Hebrew and in English. No prior familiarity with Amichai
or knowledge of Hebrew is necessary — just a desire to read one of the
greatest writers of the 20th century.

FIVE THINGS YOU ALWAYS WANTED TO KNOW...
FIVE PEOPLE WHO CHANGED THE JEWISH WORLD
with Rabbi Kane
Each session will study the background and ideas of these five Jewish
leaders (you need not attend all sessions):
 Oct. 6, 2014: The Ba’al Shem Tov. A man by the name of Israel Ben
Eliezer began the movement known today as Chasidut. Who was
he? What did he teach that profoundly changed the Jewish world?
 Nov. 10, 2014: Dr. Solomon Schechter. Born in Romania to a
Chasidic family, Solomon Schechter went on to become a lecturer
at Oxford and ultimately came to shape the Conservative
Movement in America. How did his vision become Conservative
Judaism?
 Dec. 8, 2014: Rabbi Stephen S. Wise. Rabbi Wise was perhaps the
most influential American rabbi of the first half of the 20th century.
What leading important Jewish and American institutions did he
help found? How else did he change Judaism in America?
5

Jan. 12, 2015: Moses Maimonides. There is a saying that “from
Moses to Moses none greater than Moses arose.” The reference is
to the Moses of the Torah and Moses Maimonides. What made
this Moses so great? Which great Catholic theologian of the
Middle Ages constantly quoted him? What books of everlasting
value did he write?
 Feb. 9, 2015: Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson. Rabbi
Schneerson became the 7th (and perhaps final) Lubavitcher Rebbe
in 1951. In death, as in life, he has continued to have a profound
effect upon world Jewry. What are his core beliefs? How has this
changed the landscape of Judaism?
8:45 PM
TALMUD with Rabbi Kane
No previous knowledge of Talmud is required! We’ll continue with the
study of tractate Berachot, one of the most accessible tractates of
Talmud. Join us and “dip your toe into the sea of the Talmud.” The
text is in Hebrew/Aramaic and English. Class fee is $50 for CSI
members; $100 for non-members. NEW STUDENTS WELCOME!
First class: Oct. 7

Schluger. In addition, we'll feed you--we have coffee, juice, bagels, and
cream cheese to enjoy while we have our discussions. We start off this

DURING KIDDUSH: THE ZOHAR with Rabbi Adam Zagoria-Moffet
The magnum opus of Kabbala, the Zohar is rarely studied and less-often
understood, yet within it are some of the deepest mystical insights into
our souls and our world that Judaism has to offer. Join Rabbinic Fellow
Adam Zagoria-Moffet for a Zohar Study Group during Kiddush on the
second Shabbat of each month. We'll read the text in English and discuss
it together. No preparation or prior experience whatsoever needed. Rabbi
Adam is currently pursuing an MA in Kabbala and has often taught the
Zohar before. Join us for all sessions, or drop in as you'd like. Questions?
