Serving the
WORLD
By the time a class
graduates from St.
Francis High School,
they will have given
over 15,000 hours of
service to the world.
As we celebrate the Easter Season
and the beginning of spring, our hearts and minds are filled
with the smells, sounds and colors of new life. Fresh air fills
our lungs as we venture outside more often and for longer
periods of time. The chirping of birds and honking of geese
return to campus. Flowers bloom and new leaves bud as the
temperatures become more hospitable to gardens and trees.
As educators, the faculty and staff have the opportunity to
assist in the transformation of the lives of our students in so many ways during this springtime of human
development that we call adolescence.
One of the aspects of adolescent development that resonates with the optimism of spring and the
Paschal Mystery is the enthusiasm with which young people embrace opportunities for service.
Throughout the school year, we have been able to celebrate our students many achievements especially,
in the area of service. For the third consecutive year, two St. Francis Seniors were named to the Daily
Herald’s Top Ten DuPage County Leadership Team. This year’s Spartans receiving that honor were
Meagan Gitchell '10 and Carolyn Griffith '10. Other students that have stood out for their service to
the community include: Shannon Koester '10 who was honored at the Martin Luther King celebration
for her service to the community, Nikki Zayner '10 who received the DAR Good Citizenship award,
Jack Spangler '10 who organized the Jimmy V Night with the boys basketball team, Jaime Pigott '10
did volunteer work in Uganda, Sarah Francesconi '10 worked in Haiti last summer and Tom Carani '10
brought the Harmony, Hope and Healing organization to St. Francis this winter.
Each summer Pastoral Ministry organizes work mission trips with students and parents to places like
Minnesota, Oklahoma and Tennessee. Over spring break a group will travel to Belize, Central America
and in the summer another group will go to St. Louis, MO. Still, this is just “the tip of the iceberg” of the
solidarity that manifests itself through our student body. By the time a class graduates from St. Francis
High School, they will have given over 15,000 hours of service to the world.
On Saturday April 10th, the SFHS community will host a Hope for Haiti festival to raise money to send
100,000 meals to Haiti through the Feed My Starving Children organization. In May, students, faculty and
staff will package the meals at school for shipping.
I thank you for your support of our mission! This year we have enjoyed the benefits of the commitment
of so many who have helped us accomplish our financial goals. We have had great responses to the
Annual Fund, Ensuring Our Future Auction Event and the Capital Campaign! Please join us as we break
ground on June 1st to begin the construction of the West Wing that will house the Mary J. Feltes
Science Suite and the Learning Center.

St. Francis High School will Break Ground
for the New Science Suite
and Learning Resource Center
TUESDAY, JUNE 1, 2010
at 11:00 a.m.
The success of the Building Our Future and Completing the Dream
capital campaigns is a testament to the St. Francis High School
community and the strength of their desire to build a new Science
Suite and Learning Resource Center. On June 1, 2010, St. Francis
will break ground and celebrate the much anticipated construction
of this new facility for generations of Spartans to enjoy.
The groundbreaking service will begin with a prayer service
emceed by Tom Bednar and officiated by the Most Reverend
Bishop J. Peter Sartain. The ceremony will commence outside the
current main entrance to the school where the new facility will
be built. Key points in the ceremony include remarks by Michael
Abernathy, chair of the steering committee and a blessing of the
ground, architects and contractors. Several “shovel in the ground”
pictures will be taken with local dignitaries and the top investors in
the campaign. One of the ceremonial shovels of dirt will be moved
by members of the Feltes family in honor of Mary J. Feltes. The
Science Suite will be named in Mary’s honor.
At the conclusion of the outdoor ceremony, participants will
be invited indoors to the Spyglass Gymnasium to enjoy light
refreshments, hosted by the St. Francis Parents' Organization.

Francis. We believe it altogether
fitting that the faculty and staff of
St. Francis recognize her 24 years of
service at St. Francis, and a lifetime
of sharing her love for the facts, and
the fun, of biology, anatomy, animals
and the environment. The naming
of the science wing of which she
long promoted and helped design
will serve as a durable honor to our
Mom, and we know in our hearts
that she would be "tickled pink".

Scholarship Donors and
Recipients Reception
A reception for all scholarship donors
and recipients was held after the
Catholic Schools Week Mass on
February 4, 2010. Currently, the
Alumni Association provides six
$2,200.00 renewable scholarships to
children (grandchildren) of alumni
attending St. Francis High School.
The scholarship reception provided
the recipients and board members
the opportunity to meet one another
and spend a morning getting to know
one another better.

St. Francis High School celebrated Catholic Schools Week
January 31-February 6 with a full schedule of activities.
Events, organized by various school groups, ranged from
a PADS toiletry collection to Quarter Wars to the Spartan
Olympics. Students, faculty and staff focused on service
for most of the week. Many organizations benefited from
St. Francis’ service. PADS received travel-sized toiletries
from the school’s collection competition and Haitian
relief efforts benefited as a result of several other service
activities including the Quarter Wars and a bake sale.
Hospice received blankets that St. Francis’ student ministry
team and others helped to create. The Jimmy V Foundation
received funds from the basketball team’s fundraiser and
the elderly received valentines the St. Francis students
made along with their friends at Marian Park.

and ensure it you did.
We are happy to report a profit to the school of $146,000
and counting. Sure this event was about closing the
gap between tuition and operating expenses, but it
was about so much more. It was about community,
building new relationships or rekindling old, being in an
environment that supports our children on a daily basis
and confirming our decision to provide our children with
a Catholic education.
We cannot express the gratitude we feel to all those who
helped to make this event a success. Whether you were
a volunteer, a sponsor, an advertiser, donated an item
or cash or made a purchase at the event, you have our
heartfelt appreciation.

Thank God we are all a part of St. Francis. During these trying
economical times we have been able to maintain and grow
student participation in many of our co-curricular and athletic
programs through the support of our Annual Fund. The cost of
these programs is nearly $570,000.00.
Thanks to the generosity of those that have
contributed to this year’s Annual Fund we have:

Looking to our future the most significant need from our
Annual Fund is tuition assistance. With the rising cost of
tuition, it is important to be able to expand our ability to

Help Us Complete the Dream
The success of the Building Our Future and Completing the
Dream capital campaigns is a testament to the St. Francis High
School community and the strength of the desire to build a
new Science Suite and Learning Resource Center. On June 1,
2010, at 11:00 a.m., St. Francis will break ground and celebrate
the much anticipated construction of this new facility for
generations of Spartans to enjoy.
All donors to both capital campaigns will receive a ticket along
with their formal invitation in the mail to the ground breaking
ceremony. This ticket will afford the opportunity to have a
picture taken turning a shovel of dirt after the formal ceremony.
The St. Francis Alumni Association will then place the picture in
a frame and mail to you to forever show your presence on this
historic day.
We are also preparing to print the commemorative Ground
Breaking booklet that will forever mark a day that changed
the future of St. Francis High School. If you have contributed
to either Building Our Future and/or Completing the Dream,
please read through the list below to see that your name is
spelled correctly. If you have any corrections, please contact
Trish Lynch at 630-668-5800 x1115 prior to May 10, 2010.
If you have not yet made a gift to the campaign, there is still

($8,275). We seek tax deductible donations
in order to keep tuition affordable. The

Annual Fund Gifts received by March 15, 2010.
Gifts restricted to other categories are listed
separately with no amounts. These gifts are
not included in the total Annual Fund Giving

Bill Melka will celebrate his
50th birthday on April 15,
2010. Bill will complete five century bike rides – 100 miles for each
decade of his life - in five months at 50 years of age to benefit Ronald
McDonald House Charities of Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana.
For those not familiar with the physical requirements to accomplish
this goal, assimilate it to running marathons. The goal of Bill’s efforts
is to raise a minimum of $50,000 to be donated directly to Ronald
McDonald House Charities. This amount will sponsor the construction
of one of 86 guest rooms. Never setting sights low, the sponsorship
of an entire floor is $500,000. Gifts can be made directly to Ronald
McDonald House Charities to support this effort at http://www.
firstgiving.com/billmelka. Professionally, Bill has been a trusted
advisor to high net worth individuals and families with their wealth
management needs for 25 years. Bill is a native Chicagoan and lives
with his wife, Rochel, and their children in the western suburbs of Chicago.

Institute of Technology in 2005
with a degree in Fashion Design
and Textiles, Megan Garrity has

continued to work and live in New
York and will celebrate ten years in
NYC next August. Megan has been
working for Ralph Lauren in the
Men's Sweater Design department
for the last five years where many of
her projects have had international
recognition. A few of her special
projects have included uniforms
and retail items for The US OPEN,
Wimbledon, The Summer 2008
Olympic Games in China, The
Harvard Varsity Letter Sweater, and
special pieces for Lebron James
and Jan Vogler. Most recently her
sweaters were viewed by millions
across the world as the US athletes
marched in the Opening and Closing
Ceremonies of the 2010 Winter
Olympics in Vancuover as well as by
athletes such as Shaun White during
his Gold medal winning interview.
Megan continues to love New York,
but can't wait to catch up with
everyone at the upcoming 10

Mallory L. Somogyi just passed her
Professional in Human Resources
(PHR) exam on December 12, 2009.
This is an accredited exam from
the HRIC that tests ones entire
knowledge of the human resource
field. Mallory also holds a B.S in
Human Resource Management from
Roosevelt University. She is currently
working in Itasca and bought her first
house in July of 2008.

Christina Kaiser graduated from the University of
Dayton in May with Honors with Distinction. She
recently completed a thesis and will be attending the
University of Illinois at Chicago in the fall to begin
working toward her DPT in physical therapy.

Monterrey, Mexico with 5 other students and a Sister.
The group stayed with the Sisters of the Holy Cross for
a week and participated in various activities such as

visiting the sick and more.

State Scholars for their outstanding
academic achievement.

J. Kyle Braid Leadership Award
Four St. Francis students have received the honor of being
awarded the J. Kyle Braid Leadership Award: Kylee Read '12, Andi
Matichak '12, Jake Tibble '12, and Ryan Coyle '12. J. Kyle Braid
is a leadership training organization founded by Ken and Colleen
Braid and named after their late son. Their son Kyle died as a
result of steroid abuse and the organization was founded to help
keep kids away from drugs and alcohol. All students that attend
or are nominated for the J. Kyle Braid leadership program must be
athletes and have shown themselves to be leaders on their teams
and in the classroom. This is St. Francis' second year in the J. Kyle
Braid program.
National Merit Scholars
Congratulations to the following seniors who were recently named
as Commended Students in the National Merit Scholarship Program.
Although they will not continue in the scholarship competition,
Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more
than 1.5 million students who entered the 2010 competition by
taking the 2008 PSAT test. Our Commended Students for the Class
of 2010 are Andrew Caron, Allison Cochrane, Sara Francesconi,
and Daniel McCarthy.
Daily Herald Dupage County
Leadership Team
Congratulations to Meagan Gitchell '10 and Carloyn Griffith '10 on
being selected for The Daily Herald All-Area Leadership Team. The
Team recognizes area students who have excelled volunteerism
and community service. Each area high school can submit up to
two candidates for the award. An independent panel of judges
evaluated approximately 80 nominees from the DuPage area and
chose 10 students to be honored on the Leadership Team—two of
which were our nominees from St. Francis.

for a musical experience
in Florida. The students
were under the direction
of Mr. Bob Mamminga,
band director and Mrs.
Nina Schroeder, choral
director. The trip was
organized through a
special arrangement with
Disney’s Magic Music
Days. Each of St. Francis
performing
ensembles
auditioned and was
chosen to take part in this experience. The Music Ensemble and choir
performed on Disney’s Waterside Stage in Downtown Disney and the
Spartan Marching Band marched down Main Street in Disney's World
in a Parade. The students participated in workshops with a Disney
professional musician/composer who worked with them and provided
an authentic rehearsal and recording experience. The students also
had opportunities to see and explore Epcot, Disney World, Hollywood
Studios, Animal Kingdom and Downtown Disney. The trip was hugely
successful and fun for all involved.
Spring Musical:
The Spring Musical was directed by
Carolyn Brady Riley and produced
by Lauren Ladley '02. It ran from
Thursday, March 11 through Sunday,
March 14th and included more than
100 students in the cast and crew!
HOPE for HAITI
Save the Date
Feed my Starving Children
On Campus May 14th
On Saturday, April 10th, St. Francis opened its doors to the
St. Francis families and its surrounding communities for the
Hope for Haiti Festival. The event was set to raise money to
bring the mobile unit of Feed My Starving Children to our
campus to pack 100,000 meals on May 14th for the people of
Haiti. For more information for helping with the Mobile Feed

As we continually explore alternatives
for fundraising in support of our mission,

BOYS’ SWIM TEAM
The Boys’ Swim Team defeated seven
teams during the regular season and
defeated rival Benet Academy on
the Freshman/Sophomore level for a
5th/11th place finish at Conference. At
Sectionals every swimmer dropped time
and the boys set 16 new school records.
The team had a lot of fun this season. The best part about swimming
is that no one rides the bench. All swimmers participate in at least 75%
of all possible races and the majority swim in 100% of possible races.
Everyone also gets to compete in a championship meet!
CHEERLEADING
The Cheerleading Team had a
very successful 2009/2010 Winter
Season. The Varsity cheerleaders
finished second out of ten teams
at the Conference Competition.
They then went on to finish 8th
out of 16 teams at the Sectional
competition where they scored
their highest score of the season.
And of course, the cheerleaders
have cheered at every boys
basketball game this season!
BOYS’ BASKETBALL
The St. Francis Boys’ Basketball
season got off to a slow start with a
rigid schedule and some key injuries.
However, the Spartans finished 1414 going 11-5 the last 16 games.
The Spartans captured the SCC Blue
Conference championship. The team
also had a huge upset win over #4
Wheaton Academy to get to the
3A Regional Final before losing a
tough game vs. a talented RiversideBrookfield team. The team was
consistently led by Seniors Dave
Spahn, Joe Pfeiffer, Larry Murison
and Mark Schmitt. Sophomore Ryan
Coyle was the leading rebounder and
consistent scorer for the Varsity
team as well.

DANCE TEAM
GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
The Varsity Girls Basketball
Team finished the season
with a record of 10-19
against a very difficult
schedule of opponents.
Although wins were hard
to come by, the girls never
quit playing hard and were
part of some exciting close
games. Highlights of the
season were an exciting
overtime victory over
East Aurora, a convincing
victory over St. Edward, a
nail-biting win over cross-town public school rival Wheaton North,
and a Regional Semi-final victory over Chicago Hope. Individually,
Fiona McMahon '11 was named to the Suburban Christian Blue AllConference team, the Willowbrook Thanksgiving All-Tournament
Team, and the Lisle Christmas All-Tournament Team. Kelly McShea
'11 was also named to the Willowbrook All-Tournament Team. At
the team year-end Awards Banquet, Senior Megan Bruggeman and
Junior Fiona McMahon were named Co-MVPs, while senior Diana
Kaiser received the team’s Spartan Award. The Sophomore Team
finished with an overall record of 16-9.
The team earned 2nd place in conference
with a record of 8-2. The Freshmen Team
finished with an overall record of 16-6 and
7-1 in conference. The Freshman were 1st
place in conference.
The St. Francis Varsity Dance Team
had an award winning season. The
Spartanette’s success began at the
St. Charles East Explosion sponsored
by Team-Dance Illinois this past
November. The team placed first in
the Open Dance A category with a
qualification for State and second
place in Lyrical A category. The team
competed at the Wheaton Warrenville
High School Winter Spectacular in
December and placed first in each
category and qualified their lyrical
routine for State. The team also
competed at Geneva High School on
February 7th. They earned first place
in Open Dance as well as Lyrical with
another secured placement to the
State finals for each category. The
Team Dance Illinois State Competition
was held at the Peoria Civic Center
in Peoria, Illinois on March 7, 2010.
They received a 3rd place trophy in
the Open Dance A category and a 2nd
place trophy in the Lyrical A category.
