That’s how we like to think of life here in Orange Park, a distinctive tree city nestled between the banks of the St. Johns River and Doctors Lake. We’ve got big city access with a small town feel. Orange Park is a full service municipality serving 8,500 residents and over 70,000 visitors that pass by each day. The Town provides top notch police and fire/rescue services. Residents take pride in low crime rates, quick response times, and caring personal service. Our residents enjoy walking tree lined drives and catching up with friends and neighbors at our special events, all in a setting that is maintained to a standard that is unbeatable in the region. Businesses can prosper and grow here with a healthy regional economy and easy access to logistic centers. Our internal administration is here to ensure that things run smoothly and all of your questions are answered. We do all this and more with a dedicated staff of 103! While progress is part of what we do best, our rich history is just beneath the surface. The Town’s roots stretch back to plantation days when landowners like William and Sarah Pengree and Zephaniah and Anna Jai Kingsley established agricultural footholds here. Their endeavors led to further interest in the area which was soon reachable by steamboat service from Jacksonville to a dock at the end of Kingsley Avenue. Eventually, a rail line and roads brought visitors and new owners south to bask in the warm climate, start lucrative citrus crops, and enjoy the waters surrounding the Town. From a small community of just over 200 souls in 1900, the Town’s population doubled every twenty years until our peak of 9,400 in 1990. Today, Orange Park is a bustling place for residents, businesses, and travelers. Quick access to the interstate system makes Orange Park an easy commute to Jacksonville’s top industries. Jacksonville Naval Air Station, our neighbor to the north, combined with top-rated schools makes Orange Park the perfect place for families to settle both during and after active duty. For travelers, the bulk of Clay County’s hotels are in the Town and along with great restaurants, you’ll want to stay here for sure! If these reasons weren’t enough, we’ve focused specifically on developing special events that bring the community together. You’ll question why you’d ever leave! In these pages we hope to share a bit about what life in Orange Park is all about and leave you wanting to spend more time in a place we think is pretty great. Please let us know if we can assist you in any way. Warm greetings, The Council and Staff of the Town of Orange Park Councilman Steve Howard ADVERTISING & LAYOUT INFORMATION: The Orange Park Directory and Community Review was created and printed by the staff of the Town of Orange Park & Clay Today Newspaper. March 2016 | Orange Park Living • 17 The History of Orange Park, Florida Early Days of Orange Park By Cindy Cheatwood Each time the Historical Society of Orange Park presents the Moonlight on Magnolia event I have cause to think about the founders of our town. The names Kingsley, Pengree, Hall, Morgan, Wiley, Wade, and Carnes have become familiar and I am comfortable with what we know about them. But there are others still waiting to reveal themselves. I have more to learn about the Hortons, the Parmenters and the Maierfeldts. This month, our 10th anniversary founders focus has me thinking in particular about the Maierfeldts. We have a nice collec- Maierfeldt House, Orange Park tion of photos showing sweet children at play and there’s the nice 38-page history book that recorded their memories. This, as Paul Harvey might say, is what I have learned about the rest of their story. Wilhelm (Americanized to William) Maierfeldt was born (1839), educated and married in Mecklenburgh Swerin (northern Germany, on the Baltic Sea, close to Sweden and Denmark). He came to the US around 1869 with his wife, Marie and two-year-old son, Frederick, settling in Milwaukee, WI. After reading brochures about the wonderful climate of Florida they decided to move to Clay County. On May 11, 1878, William purchased land in Orange Park to build a home and start a farm, becoming one of the town’s founding patriarchs. The house was on the corner of what is now Highway 17 and Milwaukee Avenue and the 120 acre farm was situated on both sides of Plainfield Avenue and south to Doctors Lake with 2,100 feet on the water. The family operated a successful truck farm for forty years with crops and an orange grove that included 600 trees in orchard form. He had 17 acres of fine peach trees, strawberries tomatoes and Irish potatoes. (Blakey). There was even a small pear orchard because Mr. Maierfeldt had introduced the LaConte pear to the region. By 1885 William’s enterprise was thriving and he was shipping his farm goods to New York. The 1880s were interesting times for William Maierfeldt. A killer freeze came to threaten his strawberries years before the big freezes killed his oranges. The whole family worked for hours, covering plants with pine straw and Spanish moss from huge piles that had been strategically placed earlier. His forethought saved his berries Anything but Normal: Two Success Stories from the Hand School By Cindy Cheatwood The Orange Park Normal and Industrial School, sometimes referred to as the Hand School, was at one time a very important part of our young town. Opened in October of 1891 by the American Missionary Association the school was developed as an outreach to educate blacks after Reconstruction. There are some lists of names of the students who attended but these are not easy to find nor are they complete. Thinking about the school and the time in which it thrived one cannot help but wonder what happened to those young people. One recent investigation found two girls who were at the Orange Park Girls School (as one half of the school was then known). They arrived eight years apart from one another with lives different from many of their peers. The two girls, Effie Carrie Mitchell (later Hampton) and Mercedes Gilbert (later Stevenson), made names for themselves and achieved wonderful things after they left Orange Park. Effie was born in Fernandina in 1886, just 5 years before the Orange Park Normal School opened. The child 18 • Orange Park Living | March 2016 The Orange Park Normal and Industrial School of an ex-slave, Effie became a doctor, the first woman to practice medicine in Florida. She is listed among the founders of the Florida Medical, Dental and Pharmaceutical Association which was chartered in 1902. Getting her medical license at age 20 in 1906 when women were only nurses and midwives was quite a feat. Things were not easy for her as men were uncomfortable or untrusting of a female doctor. Still, she opened an office and phar- William Maierfeldt, Jr. where many other farms were not so lucky. There were lean times when the citrus freezes finally took their toll on the oranges. The Maierfeldt family lived on rye bread, black coffee, white sweet potatoes and what they could shoot or catch in the river. They endured by deciding not to eat anything the dog wouldn’t eat (McTammany). It’s not hard to imagine the Maierfeldt family sitting around the family parlor entertaining one another with stories. William told stories that would later be written in the small book, Early Days in Orange Park. The charming tales of life in early Orange Park are the stories of Florida and a growing nation. The close relationship between people and the environment reminds us to treasure simple things and to be stewards of our resources. You macy in downtown Ocala and continued her practice until 1931. She was married to the state’s first African American dentist, Lee Royal (aka Leroy) Hampton and they had two children. Lee was such a good dentist that even white patients came to see him. This enraged the KKK who occasionally burned crosses in the family’s yard. The Hampton’s were such strong believers in the kind of education offered by places like the Orange Park Normal School that their efforts to offer such opportunities to others did not go unnoticed. In the 1990s, Central Florida Community College named the Hampton Campus for them Taking quite a different path after leaving Orange Park was Mercedes Gilbert. Born in Jacksonville on July 26, 1894, Mercedes grew up to become an actress in early African American movies. She co-starred with Paul Robeson in “Body and Soul” (1924) and starred in the Langston Hughes play “Mulatto” (1936). Her many talents included roles as actress, poet, songwriter, playwright, and novelist. Unlike many of her day, both of Mercedes’ parents were successful business owners. Her father, Daniel Marshall Gilbert had a furniture store and her mother, Edna Earl Knott Gilbert, was a dressmaker. Due to their busy schedules Mercedes had a nurse and was given the best educational opportunities, including her time at Orange Park Normal School. Her early years exposed Mercedes read of steamboats and shenanigans, of enterprise and experiment. The Maierfeldts paint the town’s history to help readers conceptualize the time and place. Imagine the earliest days of Hollywood and Orange Park, Florida’s attempts to capture that magic. William Maierfeldt rented silent movies, a projector and space in the Hand School’s Congregational Church at the southeast corner of Kingsley and Smith streets to bring that experience here. For a nickel a head, theater-goers read the brief dialogue frames aloud and shook the building with their stomping feet as the train bore down on the heroine of Perils of Pauline. How marvelous that must have been! We learn about hauntings and hotel happenings, mystery and romance. Indeed, it was at one of the many dances held at the Park View Hotel that Frederick Maierfeldt met Christine Brandenburger, the daughter of Prussian immigrant farmers who had settled in St. Clair, Illinois. They were married and had two sons, whom they named William Carl, and Frederick Kenneth and a daughter, Nancy Christine. Their immigrant grandfather would have known the children well as he lived until 1912. William Carl would grow up to marry Gladys Hazeltine Walker. It was their son, William Carl Maierfeldt Jr., who recorded the family stories, passed down from three previous generations. These were the pieces of information I found for the Maierfeldts. There are apparently still members of this family being born around the country. I hope they are telling the old stories and that their listeners, like all of us in Orange Park are all the richer for it. Mercedes Gilbert to many viewpoints and options. She decided to study medicine to become a nurse and obtained training in that using Brewster Hospital nurses Training School and Edward Waters College as well as her Orange Park education. She worked as a teacher for a while in South Florida before moving north to work as a nurse. The credentials of Brewster were not seen as preparation enough so three more years of study would be required before Mercedes would be able to work as a nurse. This seemed too much so Mercedes took the advice of friends and pursued the arts in New York instead. Mercedes Gilbert In 1922 Mercedes married Arthur Stevenson and continued her artistic endeavors. There were no children documented from the marriage, possibly both were too busy. Living in New York during the bulk of her career, she made contributions to the Associated Negro Press and later acted in Vaudeville and motion pictures. She managed a jazz band and blues singer who recorded songs she wrote. Diversely talented, she wrote plays as well, one of which, Environment, is available in its entirety online today. A collection of her writings, Selected Poems, Comedy and Drama, was published in 1931. The following year, she wrote a novel, Aunt Sara’s Wooden God. By 1941 she had begun touring with one-woman shows that she wrote herself. She also visited colleges to educate students on black history, demonstrating her high regard for education and her appreciation of all that she had been able to achieve. She died in 1952 in New York. The period in which both these ladies thrived was one of opportunities waiting to happen. For Gilbert the Harlem Renaissance period meant free expression of talent and limitless potential. For Mitchell the recovery of the South following the Reconstruction period opened more doors during a window of thirty or so years any period before or after it, that encouraged barrierbreaking for African Americans, even female African Americans. Both ladies took the bull by the horns and maximized the advantages they had been offered. The one advantage that both shared was the prestigious educational experience received at Orange Park Normal and Industrial School. While the school ceased to function by 1913, as the Clarke family settled in to their new area, Mercedes Gilbert and Effie Mitchell spread their wings to soar to personal heights of glory. We can think of them now and smile knowing Orange Park played a small role in their success. Cathy Hayes Remembered spread on the Hayes family while they lived in a rental apartment on Clarke House property in Orange Park. Born Catherine Hinickle, on 11/29/1921 in Middleton, WI, Cathy was the daughter of Emma (Jensen) and Fredrick Hinickle, Sr. She and husband, Keith both graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1942 before coming to Florida to join the Yerkes team. Together they adopted Viki, a 3-day-old chimpanzee and raised her as their child for years. The Ape in Our House gives an account of the relationship built between the two species. Charming moments are recorded as well as the process of the couple’s attempts to teach Viki language. There have been numerous other attempts to teach human language to chimpanzees but the Hayes’ results are the most successful on record. With Cathy moving her lips for her, Viki learned to utter “mama.” Eventually, with much difficulty, she managed to say three other words—papa, cup and up—on her own. The many close observations noted on Viki’s behavior contributed to the work of other scientists at the Yerkes Center and beyond. The relationship demonstrated obvious real affection as well as scientific clear-headedness. The Dec. 3, 1951 Life Magazine article, “Chimp That Can Talk” includes many pictures of the Hayes family interacting in middle-class family fashion with Viki. It can be viewed on the web using Google books (pp. 108 111). Check it out and you too will have to smile. Just three years after The Ape in Our House was published Viki tragically died of encephalitis. At that time Cathy and Keith had divorced and Cathy was only months away from marrying her second husband, Henry Wieghorst Nissen, another important scientist and Director of the Yerkes laboratories (starting in 1955). The marriage was short, having ended before Nissen’s death by his own hand in 1958. By then the couple had moved to Illinois where Cathy would remain to raise a daughter, Diana who would later give Cathy three grandchildren. Cathy attended the University of Chicago Medical School and for nearly 30 years was a medical writer and a clinical researcher at G.D. Searle & Co. Pharmaceuticals. Keith Hayes moved to Albuquerque, NM after Florida and died in 2000 in Tucson, AZ. Catherine Hinickle Hayes Nissen died January 3, 2008 in a Wisconsin hospice at age 86. She was remembered with memorials in Wisconsin and Illinois. Her time in Orange Park no doubt set the stage for her subsequent years of research. Her book and her time with Viki preserve her memory and add flavor the Orange Park’s past. By Cindy Cheatwood A lot of us are aware that the Yerkes Primate Research Center was in Orange Park for over three decades. We know about Robert Yerkes and his work at the “Monkey Farm”. Many also know about Dr. Keith Hayes, who gained fame for his filmed teaching sessions with Viki, his adopted chimpanzee whom he treated as one would a human child. But, integral to this story is Cathy Hayes, once wife and partner in research to Keith, who also wrote the book that would bring their story popular fame. Cathy Hayes’ 1951 narrative, The Ape in Our House, brought Viki to the attention of researchers and curious Americans far and wide, including those at Life Magazine who did a large Cathy Hayes with Viki Viki March 2016 | Orange Park Living • 19 mber Department’s nu nts e lic Po rk Pa e side The Orang security of the re d an ty fe sa e th one goal is all those who range Park and of the Town of O e visiting our town. In response to the success of this first event, John Capes, Executive Director, initiated our “Heart of the Community” program. These events offer child safe, family-friendly and affordable activities for all ages. During these events, we open our doors and our hearts to people of the community to see and enjoy our beautiful campus. They interact with our residents and find out what Moosehaven, and our wonderful fraternity, is all about. The Heart of the Community American Pride Fourth of July This event has grown into the largest event in Clay County on July 4th. Attendance at this year’s event was estimated at 6,000 people, making it the largest July 4th event in Orange Park each year. Vendors, including our resident crafters sell their wares and food throughout the day. Attendees spread blankets on the ground or bring folding chairs to enjoy a daylong celebration of our country’s birth as they listen to local and national entertainers and, of course, enjoy a spectacular fireworks show at dusk. The Heart of the Community Trick or Treat Event This popular event features a variety of entertainment for kids to age 12. Especially popular each year is the Zombie House, which sees continuous lines throughout The Heart of the Community Easter Egg Hunt Our Heart of the Community Easter Egg Hunt is always an enormous success. This event brings in an average of 4,000 members of our local community. This year we hid 18,000 eggs for the three separate age specific hunts. The event includes pony rides, a petting zoo, game booths, face painting, a coloring booth, train rides, bounce houses, slides and of course, Mr. and Mrs. Easter Bunny. This is a free event and has become one of the larger events we hold on our campus. The Heart of the Community Easter Sunrise Service The Heart of the Community Sunrise Service has been held at Moosehaven for more than 30 years. Attendance at this event continues to grow as a result of partnering with local ministries for the music and message. This event averages about 500 attendees and of course is held at sunrise on the bank of the St. Johns River. The Heart of the Community Breakfasts We generally host these events in conjunction with other events on campus. Residents enjoy meeting community members and our visitors enjoy a fabulous buffet breakfast in our Michigan Building. the evening. This free event also offers a Happy Haunted Trail, an age appropriate outdoor movie and more candy than the visiting ghosts and ghouls can carry. Last year, thanks to the generosity of Moose members across the nation, we were able to distribute approximately 3,000 pounds of candy to our over 4,000 Trick or Treaters. The Heart of the Community Chili Cook-Off This year’s event served as a fundraiser for the K9 for Warriors Project. Teams from across the nation competed in this year’s event. Fraternal teams from Georgia, Alabama and Florida Moose Associations vow each year to take home the top prize. The day begins with our Community Breakfast and proceeds directly to the Chili Cook-off. Craft vendors, live entertainment and some of the best chili around fill the day with fun and laughter, not to mention some good natured fraternal mischief. Attendance to the event is free and attendees may purchase a Chili Tasting Kit for $5. This year’s event achieved its fundraising goal of $10,000 for the K9 for Warrior Project. For more information about this worthwhile program, please visit www.k9sforwarriors.org/. ters, Moosehaven continues to provide the highest quality of care to our residents on the banks of the beautiful St. Johns River in Orange Park, Florida. HEART OF THE COMMUNITY The history of Moosehaven is inextricably interwoven with the history of Mooseheart, “The Child City.” In 1911, the Moose convention held in Detroit, Michigan approved plans that created Mooseheart, a school and home for orphaned children of Moose members. Mooseheart opened two years later in 1913 with plans to also provide a place for aged members of the fraternity. By 1915, Mooseheart housed a few disabled Moose members who also served as employees assigned tasks appropriate to their physical and mental abilities. To be eligible for admission, you had to have been a Moose member for at least five years. Also during that time, the US Government contracted with the fraternity to provide job training to Moose veterans of WWI, which enabled them to return to society as useful citizens. In 1916, the Mooseheart Governors determined that it was not feasible to provide for the aged, infirm, and handicapped at Mooseheart and requested that other provisions be made. Director General James J. Davis proposed to the Convention of 1918 to find “…a home in a warmer climate for the aged members and their spouses, because of severe weather conditions at Mooseheart, and the problems involved in disciplining children and adults on the same campus.” In 1922, Moose purchased property on the banks of the St. Johns River in Orange Park, FL to establish Moosehaven, “The City of Opportunity.” It contained a hotel that had approximately 65 rooms and a double house of 14 rooms on 8 acres and an additional 18-acre parcel. The original concept was to “organize the residents so that 24 • Orange Park Living | March 2016 they might help each other and help themselves, and provide from their own energy the major part of the cost of their keep.” In the first six months of operation, Moosehaven had no debt, no employees, and the 54 residents did all of the work. The cost to maintain each resident was approximately $94.00 per month. And, for a time, each increase in the number of residents actually decreased the cost per person. There were 144 residents in 1925-1926 and the average cost per resident was approximately $48 per month. The next several years saw the purchase of additional property, the expansion of the farming operation, and several property improvements. Plans were developed in 1934 to construct a health care facility on the campus for the exclusive use of Moosehaven residents. Fundraising was completed the following year and a new onsite hospital was dedicated in 1938. Today, Moosehaven continues its long history and mission of caring for Moose seniors. Every day, 300 Moose men and women enjoy the many comforts and services offered on the campus. Moosehaven is a true continuum of care offering independent living, congregate living, assisted living, nursing and specialized services for those suffering age related dementias. True to its original mission, Moosehaven continues to accept less affluent fraternal members as residents through its traditional admissions program while those who wish to manage their own financial resources can join through the Brandon Place program. Thanks to the financial support provided by Moose International, the Foundation, and our lodges and chap- BRANDON PLACE AT MOOSEHAVEN Brandon Place at Moosehaven is a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC.) But when we use that term, what are we describing? Here is the way LeadingAge described a CCRC at its website, www.leadingage.com. LeadingAge is an association of 6,000 notfor-profit organizations dedicated to making America a better place to grow old: “A CCRC is a residential alternative for older adults (usually age 65 and older) that provides flexible housing options, a coordinated system of services and amenities, and a continuum of care that addresses the varying health and wellness needs of residents as they grow older. The emphasis of the CCRC model is to enable residents to avoid having to move—except, perhaps, to another level of care within the community when they require additional services. Remaining within the community allows the residents to maintain their existing relationships with their spouse and friends, avoid the stress of a move and receive the services they require in an environment they know and trust. A CCRC typically includes apartment or cottage living units (independent living), assisted living and skilled nursing in a campus-style setting. Residents have lifetime access to the community’s continuum of care. Typically, all of the living options (independent living, assisted living, and nursing) of the CCRC are on a single campus. As care and services for older adults continue to evolve, CCRCs have been adding additional components, such as memory support and wellness programs, to their services mix.” Brandon Place at Moosehaven is an Entrance Fee Program which requires residents to pay a one-time Entrance Fee and an on-going Monthly Fee for the villa or apartment of their choice. Entrance fees are based on the size and location of the home they select. Monthly fees are based upon a number of factors, including the size of the home and services received. Residents maintain their own financial portfolios and independent lifestyle while enjoying all the benefits of a CCRC. Residents living at Brandon Place enjoy an active lifestyle, beautifully designed apartments and villas, access to all of Moosehaven’s many amenities and programs as well as top-rated healthcare. Our 73-acre campus is located on the banks of the magnificent St. Johns River. Our residents enjoy many scheduled activities such as Tai-Chi, line dancing, pool exercises, chair exercises, bowling, billiards, shuffle board, ceramics, computer classes as well as use of our indoor heated pool, state-ofthe-art exercise and fitness equipment, 400-foot fishing pier, wood shop and golf driving range. Our pharmacy services and fully-staffed medical clinic provide convenient, professional services to our residents. Transportation is provided for all scheduled activities and residents may also choose to use the services of the Clay County Council on Aging Transit Program, which makes stops on campus each day. Moosehaven’s riverfront campus features paved walking paths and a peaceful setting offering residents safe and comfortable surroundings and some of the best sunrise views found in northern Florida. Our campus boasts two on-site cafes as part of our expanded dining options. The Life Care Center Café and the Painted Turtle Café offer Brandon Place residents the opportunity to dine in or take out. Scheduled dining programs like the Michigan Deck Dinners, Community Breakfasts, themed parties and monthly socials round out our extensive dining program. Studies show that living in a CCRC environment allows residents to build bonds with other seniors, which in turn promotes increased life expectancy. The CCRC structure also eases the burden for married couples when one spouse has to move to a higher level of care. Since everything is on the same campus, they can visit and remain connected whether the move is a temporary one or more permanent. Quite simply, our residents have everything they need on-site, both now and in the future. As they age and experience increased healthcare needs, their children won’t have to rearrange their lives to care for their parents. This security and peace-ofmind are priceless.
