Jewish Cultural Festival 4 Temple Israel A Message From… Rabbi Ilene Bogosian Interim Rabbi 130 Riverside Drive Dayton, OH 45405-4968 phone 937-496-0050 fax 888-777-0490 www.tidayton.org OFFICE HOURS There are special yet daunting moments in our lives when we stand, dizzy, right at the confluence of the end and the beginning. During the ten years that I served as a campus rabbi, the month of June meant only one thing. A quarter of our students marked the end of their time at the college with a ceremony variously known as graduation or commencement. Graduation marked the end of their studies and commencement announced the beginning of the rest of their lives. On that same day they were required to move out of campus housing. Literally, they were leaving four years of their lives behind. In recent years, June has acquired a different but similar flavor for me. Each year at this time I am at the end of my work and the beginning of my work. The ending is the most difficult. At the end of this month I will be leaving Dayton and Temple Israel and all of you. It has been a wonderful, enriching, nourishing year for me and I hope that has been the case for all of you as well. I will miss you very much. The end of this month is also a commencement for all of us. I will begin my work as the interim rabbi at Temple Beth David in Cheshire, CT. You will begin what I hope will be a year of joy and growth, your first with Rabbi Karen Bodney-Halasz as your Senior Rabbi. Next year I will not be in touch with you because it is important that you give your full attention to getting to know Rabbi Bodney-Halasz in her new role. I will, however, be nagging her from time to time to tell me about how all of you are faring. Wishing you joy and celebration in 5777 and all the years that follow. Summer Worship Save the Date! Summer Schedule. Mark your calendar: all summer long, Friday night services will begin at 6:00 p.m. On Saturdays, Torah study is at 9:30 a.m. and worship is at 10:30 a.m. August 19-21 Services will be lay led on June 3, 4, 24, 25, July 1, 2, 22, 23, 29, 30 and August 12 and 13. Join us as we celebrate the installation of our new Senior Rabbi, Karen BodneyHalasz. More information will be available in the August edition of the Temple Rabbi Bodney-Halasz Tablet and in TIDbits. Second, we reach in to our congregation, involving 200 or more members and friends to plan, prepare and host a day of activities for everyone. Third, we raise funds that support Temple’s operations throughout the year. Shavout Service Sunday, June 12 at 10:30 a.m. Shavuot is the Hebrew word for “weeks,” and is the festival marking the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai, seven weeks after Passover. Like many other Jewish holidays, it began as an ancient agricultural festival during which Israelites brought crop offerings to the Temple in Jerusalem. Today, it is a celebration of Torah, education, and actively choosing to participate in Jewish life. From the Rabbi Educator Farewell Interim Rabbi Bogosian Join us Friday, June 10 after the 6:00 p.m. service for an oneg as we say goodbye to Rabbi Bogosian and send her on her way to her next assignment in Cheshire, Connecticut. 6 Burying Sacred Books Renew Your TI Membership If you haven’t already done so, please return your completed membership renewal for 2016-2017 now. Suzanne Shaw, Temple's Executive Director, will set up your account based on your response. Temple never denies membership to anyone for financial reasons. But we also hope that those who can will increase their contributions in the coming year. When you voluntarily increase your membership contribution, you help sustain Temple’s programs and services both for yourself and for our community. Members donate half of Temple’s revenues, and the balance comes mostly from Temple Israel Foundation and fundraising. Temple Israel’s religious school students took a field trip on Sunday, May 1 to Riverview Cemetery to bury sacred texts in the genezia If you can afford to give more, please do. We count on you. Increase from regular to mitzvah membership ($1875) or from mitzvah membership to Lamed Vav membership ($2400). If you’re already a Lamed Vav member, increase to the next level. If that is beyond your reach, any increase is appreciated. Your donations allow us to remain a vibrant center of Judaism for our entire community. Mazal Tov To Our High School Graduates!
