Make time for
Christmas crafts

ike most children, when I was growing up I made Christmas
tree ornaments and presents for mom and dad in school, at
church and at Girl Scout meetings. But it wasn’t until I became
a mother myself that I fully appreciated the little handmade gifts of
construction paper, string and plastic baubles.
In fact, some of my favorite gifts are ones my son and daughter have
made.
In my house, where you’ll find four or five Christmas trees, one is
dedicated to all home made ornaments. It’s called the ‘kids’ tree’
and it contains an assortment of one-eyed snowmen, angels
without wings, beardless Santa faces and construction paper
ornaments with lopsided pictures of my children glued on
them. And it’s absolutely beautiful.
So during this holiday season, get out the glue sticks, glitter, construction paper and ribbon and create a memory.
While the children are out of school, put house cleaning on
hold, dinner on the backburner and delay all the hundreds of
other chores that need to be done and enjoy a few minutes of craft
time around the kitchen table.

An Ornament Filled with Love
for Grandparents
Jeweled Serving Pieces
To make this gift, you’ll need:
Inexpensive serving pieces (fork and spoon)
Thin craft wire, either silver or bronze
Plastic beads
Small plain boxes -- jewelry boxes work well
Glitter, sequins, small plastic jewels and other ornamentation
Ribbon
Printed poem, on good paper stock if possible.
Have the child decorate the box as he/she wishes and
wrap the box with ribbon (as you would a present).
Print the poem and using a hole punch, put a hole in
the top left hand corner of the paper. Thread the ribbon
through and tie. Attach another piece of ribbon to the box
for hanging if you’d like to use it as a tree ornament.
The Poem:
This is a very special gift
That you can never see.
The reason it’s so special is,
It’s just for you from me.
Whenever you are happy,
Or even feeling blue.
You only have to hold
This gift and know
I think of you.
You never can unwrap it
Please leave the ribbon tied.
Just hold the box close
To your heart,
It’s filled with love inside.
Thread beads onto wire and wrap the wire around the handles of
the fork and spoon. Fill with as many or as few beads as desired.

A cut-out of a snowman on white paper
Hole punch
String or ribbon
Crayons
Color and decorate the snowman with crayons.
Punch holes along the outer edges and weave ribbon or string
through the holes. Tie off.
Another ribbon may be attach to use as a Christmas ornament.
This craft is great for younger children and helps promote fine
motor skills.

Winter Wonder Clothesline
Homemade Frames
Clear plastic 5X7 or 4X6 picture frames (can be purchased at
most craft stores)
Glue sticks and glue gun or school glue
Ribbons, plastic jewels, miniature ornaments (from a craft store),
charms, ribbon
Glue ribbon and other trinkets around the outer edge of the frame.
Allow to dry and fill with a favorite picture. The frames can be decorated either with miniature Christmas ornaments for a holiday frame
or with other items suitable for display year round.

Scissors
Glitter glue
Get a square piece of paper or trim a
piece of paper so that it is square. Fold
your square in half diagonally. Fold your
triangle in half, again diagonally. Fold
paper again diagonally. Around the outside of your triangle, cut some designs
of circles, squares, triangles, squiggles.
Unfold and decorate with glitter glue if
desired. Hang around the house. Next
year, do it again for a fun holiday tradition.

Miniature clothespins
First, cut out hat and mitten shapes on plain paper.
Trace them onto the craft sheets and construction
paper. Glue back-to-back for sturdier designs.
Paint as desired. Use sponge shapes to blot and
pom-poms dipped into paint to scatter dots onto the
designs.
Allow to dry and string clothesline along a wall.
Hang painted hat and mitten shapes from the line with
clothespins. This decoration can be used all winter.

Fabric glue
Trim socks by gluing pom-poms or fabric trim around
the cuff.
Trim the mittens by gluing pom-poms, charms and buttons around cuff.

Dear Santa,
My name is Haley Lewis. I
am 5 years old. I am getting my
mommy to write my letter. I live
in White Stone with mommy,
daddy, Lilly and grey girl.
This year I have been good
and please bring me toys. I
would like a Dora Doll, books,
pretty dresses and whatever you
think I will like.
I love you and the Reindeer
and will leave you lots of cookies and some Reindeer treats.
Also please bring my NaNa and
Pop Pop lots of presents and

soon. Poppy lives in Lee County
and Granny is in Pennsylvania,
please make sure you leave them

Santa, please remember all
children young and old around
the world who can’t be with
loved ones for whatever reasons.
When you see my Gaga make
sure you thank her for writing
my first letter to you. Mom will
be sure to leave some cookies for

ornaments
are a treat for
the holidays
Once the perfect tree has
been selected and placed in
the home, the next task is to
take out all of the ornaments
collected over the years and
hang them on the tree.
Part of what makes decorating the tree so memorable
are the ornaments that have
been collected over time—
many of them handmade
treasures. Looking through
them is a trip down memory
lane, bringing to mind the
happy times these ornaments
recall.
Today in a hurried society,
it may seem easier to simply
head to the store and purchase a box full of ornaments
for the tree. But spending
time creating your own can
be a family event that’s a fun
way to spend time together.
Here are a few ideas.
• Tie-dye balls. Create
ornaments that have the
impression of being tiedyed. Simply buy a box of
clear glass ornaments from a
craft store.
Pop off the metal top and
squirt one or two different colors of acrylic paint
into the center of the ball.
Replace the top and twirl the
ball around until the paint
coats the inside in a marbled
pattern.
Place on a surface where
the balls won’t roll, such as
an empty egg carton, and let
dry.
• Wire ornaments. Purchase thin craft wire and
small beads of various
colors. Bend the wire into
holiday shapes, such as
candy canes and stars. This
can be achieved by wrapping
the wire around cookie cutters as templates.

Thread the beads onto the Jett
wire shape until it is completely covered with beads.
Use needle-nose pliers to
twist together the two open
ends to seal the ornament
shut.
• Popsicle stick treasures.
Craft sticks, popsicle sticks,
whatever you call them,
these wooden items can be
glued and painted to create
a number of ornaments for
the tree. Fashion them into
a triangular shape and paint
green for a Christmas tree.
Glue a handful together and
paint white for a snowflake.
Dust these ornaments with
glitter for even more sparkle
on the tree.
• Foam creations. Pop into
any craft store or even toy
store and you will likely find
packages or loose sheets of
thin colored foam that can be
cut and designed into everything from sun visors to
doorknob signs to fun ornaments for the tree.
