Agenda

Appetite For Thought Leadership
leaders and organisations that develop
unique thinking and insights.”
Mr Rispin will show that thought
leadership is emerging as a discipline
in its own right.
”A thought leader is a recognised
leader in one’s field and is different
to a knowledgeable person or
company – a thought leader is at the
forefront of innovation and cutting
edge thinking. But thought leadership
goes further than that… it is having
the confidence to share those ideas as
actionable instilled insights for business
improvement,” Ms Barker said.
Thought Leader Craig Rispin
Senior managers and leaders
have come out in force to learn
more about thought leadership
from international thought leader,
innovator and futurist Craig Rispin.
Mr Rispin will be presenting a
session on the nine steps of thought
leadership as part of the Institute’s
member’s only AIM@home series.
AIM CEO, Carolyn Barker AM FAIM
said AIM@home is designed to
provide members with provocative
and engaging sessions where ideas
can be explored and shared.
“The term ‘thought leadership’ has
entered the general management
lexicon,” Ms Barker said.
“We are keen to hear from an expert
just what the term can mean to
“Thought leadership centres on
earning trust and credibility… thought
leaders get noticed by sharing
something different – information,
insights or ideas.
“Thought leadership also positions
managers and their organisation as
an industry authority and expert by
being perceived as a trusted advisor.
This establishes one’s reputation as a
generous contributor to an industry
and community.”
The concept of thought leadership
was attributed in 1994 to Joel
Kurtzman, editor in chief of Strategy
and Business Magazine. He used the
term to describe interviewees who
had contributed new thoughts to
business.
Among the early thought leaders
were Charles Handy who advanced
the idea of the ‘portfolio worker’,
Mitsubishi president Minoru
Makihara and Gary Hamel, a
professor at London Business School
who along with C.K. Prahalad
showed thought leadership in
corporate strategy through their use
of the term ‘core competence’.
Other sessions in the members
only AIM@Home series include the
Fellows List of latest and leading
management titles, a provocative
session on ”Why Should Anyone Be
Led by You?”, Social DNA exploring
personality types at work and Carving
a Career with a Social Conscience
presented by the young entrepreneurs
from Good Vibes Water.

7 Ways to Become
More Invokable
1000 Posts and Counting!
What a squeeze page can
do for you
Most small businesses are well aware
of the fact they need a web site, but
now it's time for them to think about
the benefits of a ‘squeeze page’, The
Age’s Enterprise Blog argues.
If people start telling YOU that
they’re telling others ABOUT you,
that makes you ‘invokable’, and
means you’ve taken ‘talkability’
to the next level, according to The
Nametag Guy, Scott Ginsberg.
Many managers and business
owners seeking to make a name for
themselves recognise the importance
of ‘talkability’ – casual, unsolicited
and authentic word of mouth where
their name is on the lips of their fans.
In a recent HELLO, my name is
Blog! post, Scott notes that having
someone ‘invoke’ your name is
exponentially more powerful, more
memorable and more valuable than
having someone just ‘say’ it.
“The word ‘invoke’ derives from the
Latin invocare, which means, “to
call upon for help.” Therefore, when
people invoke your name, they’re
building your credibility, advancing
your mindshare and enhancing your
personal brand,” he writes.
“Ultimately, being invokable is a
combination of being quotatable,
remarkable, referable and aboutable.”
Here are Scott’s top tips for boosting
your invokability:
1. Free is your friend. Don’t come
off as someone with a sense of
scarcity. It’s hard to invoke people
who are selfish with their knowledge.
2. Consider your own invocations.
Think of the three people whose
names you invoke most frequently.
Ask yourself: What have they done
– or what do they continuously do –
that makes YOU so willing to drop
their name?
2
agenda November 2009
3. Put yourself in invokable positions.
In 2000 when I began wearing a
nametag 24-7, I was a college student
at Miami University. One of the
first trends I noticed was that my
professors started calling on me during
class a lot more. If you want to be in
the right place at the right time, you
need to be in a lot of places.
4. Stick yourself out there. My
favorite Law of the Universe is,
“Whatever you want to get, just try
GIVING that thing first.” Start by
becoming an invoker yourself.
5. Become a known entity. Create a
game plan for remaining on people’s
radars. The secret to ‘Radar Equity’
is that you have to EARN the right
to be on it. That means publishing,
social networking, OFF-line
networking – Whatever it takes.
6. Stop occupying the middle.
People will recall and invoke your
name if the philosophy attached to
it is unexpected and non-template
driven. Your challenge is to build
an original, fertile and uncommon
Theory of the Universe.
7. Thank your invokers. When
people invoke your name – either
in person, during a presentation
or somewhere online – ALWAYS
thank them. Send an email, instant
message, wall-to-wall on Facebook
or tweet them a direct message. Tell
them you appreciate the kind words.
How invokable is your name? For a
checklist, read 45 Recession-Friendly
Strategies for Entreprenerial Evolution
at www.hellomynameisscott.com
A squeeze page is a single page web
presence that’s independent of an
organisation’s main web site. They
exist to offer customers dedicated,
clutter-free information about a
particular product, service
or promotion.
Many squeeze pages include a
sign-up option in order to build the
company’s database of potential
customers. The key to getting it right,
according to Enterprise, is to offer
an incentive, like a discount or free
report.
What will your squeeze page offer?
Is the expat experience worth it?
It’s long been suggested that working
aboard is one of the best things
a professional can do to build an
impressive resume.
But a recent news.com.au article
suggests working overseas doesn’t
necessarily equate to career
advancement and that many
employers prefer local experience.
It’s argued local experience and
contacts are particularly attractive to
managers seeking to fill ‘rainmaker’
roles in which employees need to
bring in new business and clients.
Employment experts say all is
not lost for people with overseas
experience, especially those in the
banking and investment sector.
But it’s claimed these job seekers
should be prepared for a reality
check when it comes to negotiating
remuneration, with many being
forced to take substantial pay cuts.

Celebrating Qualification Achievements
“This reflects the fact that achieving
a nationally recognised qualification
really does require the support and
encouragement of others,”
Ms Anthon said.
Australian Country Choice graduates Mira Hora and
Neil Carstens celebrating with their Management Team.
The dedication and focus required
to complete a qualification was
recognised at the recent graduation
ceremony for managers who had
completed Certificate IV, Diploma
and Advanced Diploma awards.
Managers from as far afield as
Mackay travelled to Management
House to be recognised for the
completion of qualifications in
Marketing, Management and
Project Management.
The graduates were presented to Dr
Jim Kable FAIM, Chair of the AIM
Academic Board and addressed by
Dr Jill Gray FAIM, a leader in the
field of adult learning and leadership.
AIM General Manager Learning and
Research, Ms Vivienne Anthon FAIM
said AIM was delighted to recognise
the graduates and their achievements
with a ceremony which included
family, friends and work colleagues.
“This was certainly the case for
graduates from Australian Country
Choice. This company has an
outstanding record of supporting the
professional development of its staff
members. It was wonderful to see
members of the Australian Country
Choice Management Team on hand
to applaud Mira Hora and Neil
Carstens, who along with colleague
Heath Manix earned the award of a
Diploma of Management.”
The Institute holds graduation
ceremonies for those who have
graduated from its open programs
twice annually. The ceremonies are
designed to be an acknowledgment
and celebration of personal
learning and the development of
organisational capacity.

Whiskers One Puts Call Out for CATS
“Our aim is to give participants
a framework to innovate using a
language that is meaningful,” Ms
Anthon said.
“It’s about building the confidence
to introduce managers about the
fascinating world of personal
innovation using Steve’s book as an
accessible framework.”
Dr Stephen Lundin
Best selling author of FISH! and
CATS: The Nine Lives of Innovation,
Dr Stephen Lundin (AKA Whiskers
One), is returning to Australia in
December 2009 to train
like-minded innovators.
AIM and Dr Lundin have created
a CATS Train the Trainer program
designed for respected trainers
who eat, sleep and breathe personal
innovation and believe in the
impact it can make on managers’
lives and workplaces.
AIM General Manager, Learning
and Research, Vivienne Anthon
FAIM, said the program is a highly
interactive experience that focuses
on four challenges and the nine
lives of innovation and how to move
forward and engage others.
The program includes an
introduction to the nine lives of
innovation through discussion and
interaction; engagement with CATS
materials including the book, CATS
the website and the CATS the video;
and an opportunity to meet with like
minded innovators and drill down on
the concept of innovation and how
it forms an essential part of everyday
life.

CATS: The Nine Lives of Innovation
is the latest work of Steve Lundin
Ph.D. author of the five million copy
best selling FISH!.
CATS: The Nine Lives of Innovation
draws on Steve’s unique style,
insights and vast experience
to provide a framework to
access innovation – one of the
most commonly used but least
understood terms in the business
and personal lexicon.
CATS: The Nine Lives of Innovation
assumes that all of us have the
capacity to innovate; that it comes
free with our membership of the
human race. The question is: “Will
we fully develop that capacity?”
The nine lives of innovation is
the curriculum for developing
our potential and the four basic
challenges we must overcome.
CATS: The Nine Lives of Innovation
is deliberately framed on
accessibility so that ordinary people,
the people who innovate, can go
forward and become part of the
innovation community.
CATS: The Nine Lives of Innovation
is a framework that is meant to be
discussed and shared. That’s why
a Train the Trainer the program has
been developed to support those
who want to explore the world of
innovation with others.

Coaching for Career Success
Coaching has been identified as one
of the most effective development
activities and one that has continued
to increase in relevance in the face
of challenging business conditions.
AIM’s Centre for Career and Executive
Management Organisational
Psychologist Gary Cox FAIM said that
coaching had maintained its relevancy
because it provided a targeted and
highly individualised approach to
career and personal progression.
“We are finding that many managers
are seeking a supported and safe
environment where they can identify
key issues and discuss challenges.
The role of the coach is to assist a
manager to gather a range of inputs
and to address issues and chart a
powerful and positive way forward,”
said Mr Cox.
“AIM offers a range of coaching
solutions for managers at all levels
including individual coaching sessions
with experienced coaches, the
Coach in Residence Program and the
highly successful Women’s Coaching
Programs. All AIM coaches must have
extensive coaching experience and
hold senior management positions so
that they understand the issues facing
leaders today.”
AIM has experienced increased in
interest in its 360 degree feedback
program which provides individuals
with feedback from a range of
stakeholders.
“Many organisations recognise the
relationship between 360 degree
feedback and performance and
development. The AIM 360 degree
feedback program is highly regarded
because it enables participants
to debrief the feedback with an
Organisational Psychologist who can
work at an objective level to assist
the individual to gain important
insights and plan for changes in
behaviour, direction or outcomes,”
Mr Cox said.
Other initiatives in the coaching
space include the AIM Coach in
Residence Program which will be
offered in November 2009 and the
Young Managers Career Coaching
Program which will commence in
March 2010. The Coach in Residence
Program will feature one of AIM’s
leading coaches in residence once
a week for those managers who
would benefit from seeking advice
on an ’as needs basis”. The Young
Manager Career Coaching Program
is a six month program that has been
developed in response to demand
from managers on the way up. It
combines facilitated workshops on
issues such as career enhancers
and career detailers with individual
coaching sessions.

In-house Training: Reduce Training Miles and Skill Staff
In-house Corporate Training is a more
effective and at times cost beneficial
alternative to other off-site or webbased training program options.
from the office means that employers
benefit from productivity and
efficiency gains.
AIM’s Training Consultants
thoroughly discuss the organisation’s
vision and mission, challenges and
issues to develop a training program
that focuses on business needs and
objectives specific to company goals.
“Most employers find the choice of
bringing training on-site is the most
effective way to develop an even
greater number of employees in an
environment that is familiar and lends
itself to situational learning,” Mr
Hankinson said.
AIM General Manager, Sales and
Operations, Barry Hankinson AFAIM,
said reducing employee travel time,
expenses and additional time away
“The size and scope of the training
can be customised to suit an
organisation's structure, size, location
and delivery time frames.”
“Whatever your needs are, AIM
will utilise its significant collection
of Australian training content to
customise a program to suit your
organisational objectives.”
AIM’s corporate facilitators are hand
