Dear Country School Community, A great pleasure every year is writing this letter to the school community to thank everyone for their generosity of funds and time. Thank you! What you hold in your hands is the Celebration of Giving and Volunteers for the 2012-13 academic year. Special thanks go to Annual Fund Chairs Peggy Strange P ’16 and Rich Croce P ’16, Parent Association President Katy Armenia P ’17, leaders of the 8th grade class gift Jennifer and Michael McNiff P ’12, ’13, Spring Gala 2013 and Golf Classic 2013 Event Chair Laura Miller-Cozean P ’16, and the multitude of dedicated volunteers who helped make the year a success. So much was accomplished by so many to benefit our fortunate students. Our children watch us devote time, expertise and money to their school, and they learn philanthropy from our example. Teaching our students to give gladly to others is an important part of our school culture and I know that spirit is important to our families. Because of your fundraising efforts this year, the operating budget was balanced, the endowment grew by $69,000 from donations alone, students now enjoy a new central Courtyard with fresh plantings, STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) is incorporated throughout all facets of learning from PreSchool to Grade 8, and a campus security and communication system has been installed and is operational. For all of that–and more–thank you! Laurie Bottiger, PhD Head of School 2012 – 2013 Report of Giving 3 Mission Statement At The Country School, we are committed to creating an environment which is both academically challenging and responsive to the social and emotional needs of growing children. Encouraging close relationships among students and teachers and cooperation between home and school, we foster a feeling of family. The school community strives to nurture each child, valuing his or her unique gifts in an atmosphere of mutual respect. The traditional disciplines of reading, writing, mathematics, science, social studies, and foreign language form the core of our academic program. Because we seek to educate the whole child, the school is also committed to a vital arts program, strong offerings in physical education, and challenging opportunities for individual growth. Our teaching is spirited and promotes active learning. We provide experiences which are sensitive to different learning styles and stages of development. We guide students to discover their own strengths and develop confidence in their abilities to learn. Our program is rich and flexible, offering many pathways to success. We recognize our responsibility to prepare students to meet not just academic challenges, but personal and ethical ones as well. Our faculty provides leadership for character development, guiding students toward self-reliance. We encourage our students to look beyond themselves, to work cooperatively with others, and to serve their communities and the larger world. We expect much of our students, because we believe they have much to give. As we honor the creativity, sense of wonder and exuberance in childhood, we hope to stir in our students enthusiasm for learning as an exciting, lifelong activity. We work to equip each student with a solid mastery of essential skills, healthy self-esteem, and a clear sense of values. At The Country School, we strive to empower young people to reach their highest, not only in school but also in life. Zupan 2012-2013 Annual Giving Participation was Extraordinary The Country School received 801 gifts totaling more than $400,000 from 550 donors who supported all fundraising initiatives. Current parents contributed 35% of the total funds raised, followed by Foundations at 22%, Trustees at 21%, Alumni and Former Trustees at 6%, Grandparents at 5%, Parents of Alumni and Corporations and Businesses at 2%, and Faculty, Administration, and Staff at 1%. Congratulations, and thank you all! 91.5% of Current Families Contributed to the Annual Giving Campaign 2012 – 2013 Report of Giving 9 Keeping the Founders’ Promise through Scholarship and Endowment Gifts Head of School ($10,000 +) JoAnn and Duncan T. MacLane ‘64 When The Country School began in 1955, its founders envisioned an institution that would “create an open atmosphere for learning in which parents and teachers working together can help children realize their full potential— under the guidance of those dedicated to the natural curiosity of young minds and the necessary disciplines.” Gifts made to the Founders’ Promise Fund (FPF) or its Endowment help maintain that open atmosphere for learning by supporting financial aid and making TCS affordable for a wide range of students, bringing to our community the many benefits of social and economic diversity. FPF and FPF Endowment are an important investment in the recruiting and retention of students so that they may receive the rich experience that The Country School provides. Brown P ‘83, ‘88 Elizabeth Lightfoot ‘77 and Nicholas Clements P ‘05, ‘07, ‘08, ‘12 The David and Marcia MacLane Endowment for Scholarship is a new perpetual scholarship fund, tied to the permanent Founders’ Promise Fund Endowment. Annual distribution will provide financial assistance to deserving students who show great promise, both in and out of the classroom, and who need scholarship assistance. The Endowment will create opportunities for those whose options were previously limited, ultimately benefiting the student and The Country School community as a whole. The Endowment was made possible by Duncan MacLane ’64 and his wife, JoAnn, to honor the memory of his parents who were integral in helping to establish the values of a Country School education. In Duncan’s words, “I believe in the importance of scholarships, both to the individual students who receive them and to the life of a school. I benefited from scholarships throughout my education, and I know that support helped me get where I am today.” Announced at the close of the 2012 calendar year, the David and Marcia MacLane Endowment for Scholarship was initially issued as a challenge grant to alumni who attended The Country School when David MacLane was headmaster. It was announced to the broader community during the First Annual Scholarship Brunch, held in the renovated school Courtyard in May. Attended by alumni, current and former faculty, and current and former parents, with entertainment by students, the brunch provided an opportunity to celebrate the MacLanes’ generous and lasting legacy, while also inspiring others to join them in their quest to provide scholarship support to future generations of students. Many thanks to the donors who answered Duncan’s and JoAnn’s challenge. Like the MacLanes, we look forward to the growth of this endowment, along with the Founders’ Promise Fund, in the hopes that qualified students will not be turned away from The Country School because they cannot afford to pay full tuition. Sayres P ‘92, ‘96 Charles Twichell* *deceased Spring Gala 2013 The families of this year’s graduating class chose the courtyard as their legacy gift to The Country School. This focal point of the campus was enhanced in the spring months with new pavers, the “next generation leaning tree,” spectacular labyrinth and owl benches, and abundant new plantings. What makes this gift even more special is that the entire class spent a Friday afternoon in April digging, planting, and landscaping the new trees and shrubs, including the dogwood that graces the center of the courtyard. On top of this physical labor, the class organized a fundraiser to raise their own funds in support of the renovation. This year’s Spring Gala was held at the lovely Madison Winter Club. More than 125 members of the community came together for a night filled with friends, fun, and fundraising, all to benefit The Country School’s unique and ever-expanding Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM) program. Through the support of many, the evening raised more than $30,000 in support of STEAM and our other vital programs. Thank you!
