Audubon Needs Your Help on Statewide Bird Survey! Last fall, backyard bird-watchers were worried that something had happened to the birds because their feeders were unusually quiet. Now that winter has settled, in New Hampshire Audubon wants to know if your birds are back. Are your bird feeders quiet or busy? Let NH Audubon know by taking part in the annual NH Backyard Winter Bird Survey on February 13th and 14th. Biologists need assistance from citizens all over the Granite State to get a clearer picture of what’s really happening with our feeder birds this winter. Anyone can participate in the Backyard Winter Bird Survey by counting the birds in their own backyard on the survey weekend and sending the results on a special reporting form to NH Audubon. To receive a copy of the reporting form and complete instructions on how to participate, send a self-addressed, stamped, long envelope to: New Hampshire Audubon/Winter Bird Survey, 84 Silk Farm Rd, Concord, NH 03301-8200. Forms are also available at NH Audubon centers in Auburn, Concord and Manchester, or you can find them on the NH Audubon web site, along with more information about the survey at www.nhaudubon.org under the Birding page. Data from the Backyard Winter Bird Survey is used to track changes in the distribution and abundance of many species. Each year about 1,300 observers across the state count the birds coming to their feeders. “The survey will show us if the fall reports of quiet feeders is reflected in actual data this winter,” said Survey Coordinator/Biologist Rebecca Suomala. Fall is an unpredictable time to evaluate bird populations at feeders because bird movements are affected by migration, weather and food supplies. The mid-winter survey provides a more stable measure from which to compare years. “But the strength of the survey is in long term trends,” says Suomala. “We now have more than twenty years of data and over the long term, natural year-to-year fluctuations smooth out so we can see what’s happening to bird populations as a whole.” Reports of a lack of birds are just as valuable as reports of many birds. “If everyone reported only when they have a lot of birds, we wouldn’t be able to see the declines,” says Suomala. “Feeders may be quiet this winter, but we want to know that.” The most important thing is to participate each year regardless of how many or how few birds you have. This provides a consistent long-term set of data that shows both the ups and downs. All NH residents are encouraged to take part. For more info about the Backyard Winter Bird Survey, please call NH Audubon at 224-9909 or go to the web site at www.nhaudubon.org and click on Birding. Note: There are two surveys this February. NH Audubon’s Backyard Winter Bird Survey that takes place in New Hampshire only, and the Great Backyard Bird Count, a nation-wide web-based survey on February 12-15. Details are at www.birdsource.org/gbbc/. 4 Winter In New Hampshire • February 2010 Winter is nearing an end and by late February, daytime temperatures in southern New Hampshire may be warm enough to be considered maple sugaring weather. The native Americans regarded the first full moon of early spring to be the start of the maple season and time to tap the sugar maples. This year that Maple Moonfalls on February 28th. Unlike the native Americans, few New Hampshire maple producers set up camp in the maple orchards and stay for the duration of the six-week season. And unlike those early sugar makers, we no longer pour the sap into hollowed logs and boil it by dropping in red hot stones. The natives also made all of their harvest into sugar, which could be stored and transported easier than liquid syrup. plastic syrup jugs. Even with these changes, the basic idea of turning maple sap into syrup or sugar remains the same, remove most of the water. With new innovations such as reverse osmosis machines and energy saving steam hoods, many producers are able to remove some of the water before the sap reaches the evaporator, thus reducing boiling time and conserving fuel. Some use vacuum on their plastic tubing to substantially increase sap flow. When you pass by a sugar house this spring and see steam billowing from the cupola atop the roof, stop for a visit. Maple producers enjoy discussing their work, they will tell you what modern equipment they use and will demonstrate how this food product is made. February is the start of the maple syrup season Today’s maple producers have added a modern twist to an ancient tradition. They now boil their sap in large stainless steel evaporator pans and package most of their finished product in MOUNT CUBE FARM 8 miles East of Orford Rt. 25A, Orford, NH • 603-353-4814 Join us for Maple Weekend March 27 & 28 Gov. During February and March, one free excursion the whole family will enjoy is visiting a sugar house. Here you can tour a maple orchard, learn how the process has evolved over hundreds of years. Maple producers will gladly explain the sugaring process and answer any questions you may have. They will probably even offer you a freesample of fresh, warm maple syrup. Its sweet, heavenly taste will surely make you smile. Sugar houses all across New Hampshire welcome visitors throughout the maple season, but it’s a good idea to call ahead to check on boiling times. CASAFundraiser Loon Mountain and the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of New Hampshire will celebrate their ten-year partnership with a return to snow golf on Frida y, February 5th. Snow golf is just what it sounds like: golf played on snow. Loon will transform its Blue Ox trail into an 18-hole golf course, and participants will ski, snowboard or snowshoe the course. The event will be a double-flight, ninehole “shot-gun” style scramble format. Prizes will even be award for the “closest to the pin” and “longest drive.” Over the past ten years, the CASA Snow Fest at Loon has raised more than $100,000. Loon first hosted a snow golf event in 2000 as part of the inaugural CASA Snow Fest winter fundraiser. “Over the years, the event has taken on different looks, but the mission, purpose and spirit has never changed,” said CASA Executive Director, Marcia Sink. “The funds we have raised have helped CASA serve more of the states children who need a strong advocate by their side.” The Snow Fest isn’t just about raising money for a good cause. The day is also an opportunity to celebrate the more than 300 volunteers who give of themselves throughout the year to CASA. Over the past ten years, Loon Mountain has offered a day of complimentary skiing and snowboarding, along with other activities for CASA volunteers and their family. “These are men and women who are in the trenches with our kids in the program day-in and day-out,” continued Sink. “For many kids, these CASA volunteers are their life-line. We are so grateful that Loon not only offers its hospitality with a site for the Snow Fest, but also is so gracious with the Volunteer Appreciation Day.” Participants of the CASA Snow Fest include both businesses and individuals. Some are involved in the court system and work with CASA daily. Others are families who have been helped by CASA. And still others are business owners who are looking to support their community and have seen how CASA has made a difference. The Rowley Agency of Concord has been a proud supporter of this event since the beginning. “We know that the CASA program works. This organization is breaking the cycle of child abuse in New Hampshire,” said Rowley Agency’s Bill VerPlanck. “We hope other businesses, large or small, will join as a sponsor and enjoy a great day at Loon Mountain” Sponsor of the 2010 CASA Snow Fest include Photo provided by CASANH WMUR-TV ABC-9, WOKQ, and The Common Man Restaurants.
