CHITWAN JUNGLE LODGE
By Amod Karki
Chitwan Jungle Lodge, as its name suggests, is located on the eastern side of the Royal Chitwan National Park, a World Heritage Site, in
the famous district of Chitwan. For the past 19 years, since its establishment, it has been engaged in providing jungle excursions and related activities to tourists, wildlife experts, ornithologists and others.
It is commonly believed that the word Chitwan in Nepali is derived from the Sanskrit word "Chitrawan" which means picture forest. Since
then, Chitwan has been associated with the forest. One can find various ethnic groups of people living in the region including the indigenous tribal people of the Chitwan valley known as the Tharus and the Darais.
The Royal Chitwan National Park was established in 1973. The Park is located approximately 175 kms south west of Kathmandu and covers a total area of 967 sq.kms. The Siwalik range forms the southern boundary of Chitwan valley. The Narayani River forms the western
boundary of the Royal Chitwan National Park and the Rapti rivers forms almost the entire northern boundary of the park. The eastern
boundary borders the Parsa National Park.
The vegetation of the park can be broadly divided into the sal forests, the riverine forests and the grass lands. The temperature of the region ranges from a minimum of 9 degree celsius in the winter to a maximum of 38 degrees in the summer months. The monsoons occur
from mid June to mid September and hence the humidity in this region is high during those months. The best months to visit the park are
from October to December and from February to April.
The park is famous for its abundance of flora and fauna including many rare herbs and medicinal plants. The most famous animal one can
see here is the one horned rhino. Other animals include leopards, sloth bear, four different kinds of deer, gaur, crocodiles of both gharial
and the marsh mugger plus the ever elusive Royal Bengal Tiger. The park is also home to 450 species of birds including the giant hornbill,
lesser florican and the Paradise Flycatcher.
Chitwan Jungle Lodge is situated in the least disturbed part of the National Park, in the eastern side across the Rapti River. The lodge consists of traditional huts scattered around a common area thus blending perfectly with the tall Sal trees and natural surroundings.
All the rooms are built with natural materials in the traditional Tharu
style with attached bath and solar powered hot water. The rooms
are attractively furnished with natural materials to provide for comfortable stay. It had an attractively designed traditional conical
thatch roofed dining hall, and a well stocked open air bar serving a
variety of drinks and liquors.
The activities offered at the lodge are designed to provide fun and
adventure and a great change to see the great variety of flora and
fauna of the park. The trained Naturalists are very knowledgeable in
the area and are there to guide you along your adventures.
Some of the jungle activities include Elephant Safaris, Canoeing
(from October till mid-March), Bird Watching, Nature/Jungle Walk,
Jungle Drive, Elephant Briefing, Elephant Bathing, Tharu Village
Visit, Visit to Observation Towers, Slide Shows etc.
You also get a chance to see the elephants sleeping in their stables and the gharial crocodiles in the crocodile lake near the lodge. Three
observation towers in different locations of the park give you a good view of a variety of animals and birds in the wild.
Those interested to travel to Nepal and visit Chitwan Jungle Lodge - please contact me. Thank you.
