Everything’s Coming Up Roses!
In 2009, Cheryl Wills, a longtime anchor for Time Warner
Cable’s NY1 News, made a startling discovery. While researching
her family tree on ancestry.com, she learned that at the height
of The Civil War, her great-great-great grandfather, Sandy Wills,
escaped from his slavemaster, Edmund Wills, and joined the
United States Colored Troops, fighting valiantly until the war’s
end in 1865. He was among a group of five enslaved men who
fled Edmund Wills’ Tennessee plantation and fought in the 4th
Heavy Field Artillery. As the nation marks the sesquicentennial of
the Civil War, Cheryl shares with us her remarkable family history in a compelling and beautifully written book. In March, Cheryl
spoke before the United Nations General Assembly for the UN
International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and
the Transatlantic Slave Trade
Cheryl, a 20-year resident of Freeport, where she lives with her
husband and teenage son, grew up on a quiet tree-lined block in
Hempsteadcand attended Uniondale High School. The oldest of
five children, her widowed mother moved the family to Long
Island from Queens when Cheryl was 13, after her father (a New
York City Firefighter) was killed in a motorcycle accident. She
went on to attend Nassau Community College, and then transferred to Syracuse University, where she received a degree in
Broadcast Journalism from the Newhouse School of Public
Communications.

June is Graduation month. Which reminds me of
coffee and a bagel.
In June 1972, Denise VeyVoda’s family celebrated
her graduation from St. Mary’s High School in
Manhasset. In June 1976 they celebrated her graduation from Colorado State University where she’d
been a top swimmer. But Denise wasn’t happy.
She’d been rejected from NYU’s College of
Dentistry. They told Denise she didn’t do well
enough on the reading portion of the DATs, the Dental Admissions Test. She
asked what she could do better. They recommended a speed reading
course. She got a Masters instead, in Public Health Education, while coaching swimming and gymnastics at Hewlett High School.
June 1977. Denise reapplied to NYU’s Dental School. She’d done better
in reading. But they still didn’t want her. This time she refused to take “no”
for an answer. So she went to talk to the Dental School’s Dean of
Admissions. And she courteously brought coffee and a bagel for Dr. Irma
Tuck Weiss. But Dr. Weiss was “too busy” to see her. Hours later Denise
left for her afternoon job as a Jones Beach lifeguard. But the next morning she was back outside Dr. Weiss’ office, with hot coffee and a new
bagel. That’s the way it was every day for
the next 3 months. Some mornings Dr.
Weiss would say, “Good morning.” One
morning she even asked, “You again?”
Denise said, “Yes. I’ll be here every morning until you accept me.”
By late August, Denise had spent more
than $300 (1970s dollars) on coffee,
bagels, subway fares and gas to drive to Jones Beach. But where was the
payoff, in a summer spent trying to get Dr. Weiss to take one more look at
her application? Dental School was starting the next day, with again, no
spot for Denise. Her summer of determination was ending. Instead of
climbing the ladder of success, that afternoon she climbed back up the ladder of the Field 4 lifeguard stand. The phone rang. “Denise, this is Dr.
Weiss. I have one seat open for tomorrow. Do you want it?” “YES!” “Then
be here tomorrow.”
No congratulations. No acceptance letter. No time to buy books. But it didn’t matter. She was in! June 1982 Dr. Denise VeyVoda graduated from New
York University’s College of Dentistry. Then she trained at Sloan Kettering.
Today besides filling cavities, she reconstructs the faces of cancer patients.
Two decades later Dr. Irma Tuck Weiss and her daughter, CW Post
Professor Dr. Joan Digby, were touring through Oyster Bay. Dr. Weiss
screamed, “Stop the car! Do you see that name? Dr. Denise VeyVoda? Write
it down. She is the best dentist I have ever known!”
It’s amazing what you can get with coffee and a bagel. ◆

“The image-makers are telling us what we should look like, what we should eat and
what we should watch. They don’t want us to look older so women are having tummy
tucks and injecting Botox. Fear is being put into them and we have enough to worry
about since 9/11 than a few wrinkles or sags,”she continued passionately. “I have a 13year-old granddaughter and I hope she doesn’t get pulled into this garbage,” she said
about the pressure among teenage girls to emulate pop stars and teenage celebrities.
Speaking about respecting the older generation, she dismissed our society’s treatment of elders.“Advertisers want
us to be airbrushed out of society when we should be respected for having wisdom to nurture younger people. We
should have the opportunity to complete our lives successfully and are entitled to keep learning and functioning,”she
stressed. Her advice as an older citizen to advertisers and image-makers? “Pay attention, because we’ve got the money,
kids. You don’t have to show me a hard body to make me spend,”she said.

“I listen to my body. If I feel like I just can’t do it today,I won’t. I will sit on the couch and
eat donuts with my kids. I go in spurts just like anyone else. Also,I never truly overdo it
either. I try to stick to a routine of working out the same time every morning, because as
a mom I realize every hour of the day that passes by that I didn’t exercise, chances are I
won’t. It is easy to find excuses not to, like ‘oh,the kids are home now, that’s my priority,’
and so that is why I wake up earlier and get moving. Many mothers put their own needs aside while tending to the
family, but we women have to keep ourselves healthy and fit.”

“My mother gave me the greatest gift:the desire to excel. Everyday when I spoke to her,
my mother always told me that she loved me. She had in her an ability to make me feel

the brightest, that there was no one like me. She said, ’You can do it Barbara, as long as

you work hard.’ She inspired me to go out and conquer the world. But it’s ironic that her
inspiration to me was her greatest sorrow. Years after I left Leeds, I found her diary. I read a passage that has stayed
with me after all these years. It said,’Barbara went to work in London today… (she pauses, choking up)… All of the
sunshine has gone out of my life…, ’so you know, it was a sacrifice. But I was a good daughter – I went back all the
time to see her. She came to stay with me in London and later,New York. My advice is help your children to be secure.
(My mother) gave me that security. She made me feel loved. If someone said,‘Barbara, would you like to come to
Washington and run America?’I would say yes,as long as I have the right helpers and advisers. It’s not being arrogant,
but being very self-confident. Now that is a gift.“

from Cuba, a father
from Australia, and
grandparents from
Ireland, O’Brien’s melting-pot family led a comfortable suburban life in St. James, near the
Smithtown beaches. She went to Smithtown
East High School and has fond memories of
that time.
Her childhood was idyllic, she recalled.
“We’d ride bikes, go to the beaches, the usual
things kids do,” she said of her upbringing.
She lived close to the St. James General Store,
a throwback to another century of Long
Island, with old-fashioned candy and unusual
toys. It was a favorite haunt of hers and her
five brothers and sisters. Her siblings, also
Harvard-educated, were complicit in her path
to journalism.
“We used to report, write and give out our
own family newspapers,” she said. Ambition
was second nature to the O’Brien clan, she said
proudly of her parents who stressed the importance of higher education.

Judith Regan
February 2005
by Naomi Serviss
Another favorite story involves her old high school – Bay Shore.“I was recently honored
and inducted into the Bay Shore Hall of Fame, and I went to the ceremony,”she said. “I
had great teachers there, and my favorite was my English teacher, Mr. Anderson,” she
recalled. “He was also there that night, and he is the reason I went into the book publishing field. When I was a junior, I wanted to be editor of the yearbook and I lobbied
heavily for it,”she explained.
But there was another student, Robin Berlin, who was also very accomplished, smart and great in everything she
tried for. “She was the best student, valedictorian, athlete, a concert pianist,” she said. For whatever reason, Mr.
Anderson bestowed editorship to Regan. After doing so, Berlin approached the new editor and said,“I would love to
work with you in any way. It would be a lot of fun,”recalled Regan, moved by the memory.
“So,here you have this intelligent, beautiful, gracious, phenomenal student who helped create the yearbook with me.
Well, she went to be the top of the class, went to medical school in the Ivy League and then, out of nowhere, she developed some horrible virus and she died,”Regan said.
So, at the Bay Shore High School award ceremony, Regan told her audience that, had she lived, Robin Berlin would
be receiving this award, and she accepted it on her behalf.
The interesting thing, she continued, is that “in the many years and roads I’ve traveled, meeting so many famous
people, out of all those people,it’s Robin Berlin who made the most lasting impression on me because of her graciousness and character,”she said.
“I’ve worked with people who are perceived to be great in
the media, and they are not. They are just seeking power and
fame at any price and use everybody for personal and egomaniacal satisfaction. So, here was this great person with
huge grace, and she was only 17 and she had everything,”
Regan said softly.“Her mother should know that she had a
lasting impression on me and everyone whose life she
touched.”

“At the table, meals convey the continuity of generations. There is serenity and unconditional love.
We have a little garden, and my grandchildren love it. They pluck ripe tomatoes, eat
them off the vine. We have string beans and peas. When they were 2 or 3 months old,
I crushed different herbs under their noses so they begin to develop references of flavors.
Those scents are in their memory banks. That’s why cooking at home is so important because even an infant smells a
scent like broccoli and gets used to it. So,when you have it to eat,the flavor becomes known. Children, especially, need
to incorporate the sources of food like milking cows and gathering eggs, visiting farms. They need to know the origins
of food.
Food is a special way of communicating. You eat it, ingest it. We don’t take many things into our bodies. Food and
sex – both positive invasions. You eat a meal, relax, your defenses are down. That’s why if you’re angry, you get indigestion. At the table, everything happens – discussions, lingering over coffee, figs, nuts. It’s very important to understand we have a great opportunity to communicate, especially to children. Why do we have business dinners and

When he set out to write his book,he struggled with it,it became a very difficult labor

It’s been a real growing experience for all of us as a family; there have been a lot of positives. Not to be Pollyannaish – if I could change things,I would – but,I look at all the plusses, and we have so many. You never know the cards

from all four of them since I have been published. They come to my readings in
Huntington.
Another teacher that I was close to was Joe Pilo, my AP Bio teacher, and clearly he must have instilled in me
a real interest in science, because so much of what I write is based in biology and DNA. I see him every year. It
was a combination of their influence, and that of my mother and my grandmother, that led me to become a
teacher and a writer.”

“I feel like I’ve kind of become a little bit of a poster child for women’s gynecologic cancer. But it’s given me a purpose in my life, actually – one that I never anticipated, but I’m
very grateful for. And it’s really important that women in this position learn the early
warning symptoms of gynecologic cancer and the tests that are available,”Fran advises.
“Presently, too many women are getting diagnosed in the late stages, primarily because
the earliest warning symptoms – when [the disease] is at its most curable – go undetected. Or,often mis-diagnosed
as far more benign illnesses. So the woman with ovarian cancer is often mis-diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome.
Consequently,80 percent of all women with ovarian cancer, which is a very aggressive cancer, find out in the late stages.
And 70 percent of them will die. Likewise, the cancer that I’m a survivor of,uterine cancer, though far more curable and
less aggressive,is the only female cancer with a mortality rate that’s on the rise.”

“Women – unfortunately too many women – have a victim mentality,”she gripes. “I’m
playing amateur psychologist for a moment. Women have this need to nest,I think, but
it is greater for them than the male of the species.
Males like somebody to take care of them … and they like to run around and pollinate! They don’t have the same kind of need as women to nest and be mated. So,
women allow themselves to be victimized in order to get that sense of nest and mating. I think there’s something
understandable about it,even biological. Women want to have a mate to travel through life with, and because of that,
they’re willing to subjugate themselves,I think, much more frequently than men.”

“What’s interesting about money is this:when you don’t have any,you think that having
money would be the solution to your problems. You think you are so depressed because
you don’t have money to pay your bills. Then, one day, you have more money than you
would be able to spend in your entire life and you realize you are still unhappy. If I can’t
blame it on the lack of money, what can I blame it on? You begin to realize that who you
are is more important than how much money you have. I will be first to tell you that I want you to have all the money

When I was ready to graduate, the school counselor

My mother worked, so I had the house to myself

“60 Minutes is very different from hard news. In hard news, you basically show up
at an event or situation, and you have no idea what is going to unfold. You get your
notebook out and things happen in front of your eyes. And you boil it all down into
a narrative. In 60 Minutes, you tell stories that already happened or were already
investigated. Once the interviewing starts, we pretty much know what the story is.
We’ve already talked to the people we interview, and we pretty much know what they’re going to say. But when
you get into the interview, surprises always happen, and that’s what you strive for in this type of story.
Sometimes, I think I know what the story is and I go to cover it, and my opinion of what it was supposed to be
changes, and I do a complete 180.”

Henner’s clarity was hard-won. For years, she struggled with her weight, going on fad
diets and then gaining the pounds right back. It started after her father died suddenly
at 52; he had a heart attack. Henner was 17 years old. “It was my senior year in high
school and I ‘ate’ my feelings. That summer between high school and college I put on
about 25 pounds and kept growing from there.”
Unfortunately, weight gain would turn out to be far from her biggest problem. Her mother became ill. Henner
recalls,“my mother was teaching dancing in December, went to bed with the flu in January, went into the hospital in February, had her leg amputated in April and died in May. I had just turned 26, and I got Taxi two weeks
later. The only time I left her bedside in the last two months of her life was to go to Los Angeles to audition for
Taxi. It was really tragic that my mother never got to see me.”

What advice would you offer singers trying to break into the business today?
“I would tell them don’t do it! I think you have to have a passion for it. Schooling is fine,
but at the end of the day,it is about a passion that says you would do this for absolutely nothing, because you just love it that much. Also, just because you can sing or you
have talent, doesn’t make you a star. I think people get confused between being famous
and having a gift – they aren’t always the same thing. A lot of people who have a great talent don’t necessarily want
to be famous – they can’t handle it.”

“One of the things I try to explore in Rise & Shine is that,if we are all doing so well, why
are we not happier. A 2,000-square-foot great room is not a hedge against loneliness.
I think Americans are used to each generation being more successful than the previous
one. There’s a sense that if we make more money, we will be happier, but that’s a false
premise – especially now. We may live with great prosperity, but there’s a hole in the
heart of it.”
“I take great joy in being a woman and a person. But I have never, ever thought that I
wasn't equal. I grew up in an era where women were struggling to find a balance.
Somehow I managed to find that way for myself at a very young age. It never occurred
to me that I couldn't do anything as long as I tried my best. There were times where I
knew I had to work twice as hard as my male counterparts. But that's the way it was,so
that's what I did.”

Eventually, she added, attitudes changed. “The idea that I actually would want to breastfeed my child and bring the
child to work every day and make sure that I took the child on the road with me when I went on the road – it started
a ripple effect. It really changed policies in corporations all across America.”

“When my husband Terry and I were going together, and we were looking at making a
life together, I said something rather humorous to him. I said,‘Look, you have to understand you are marrying a girl whose career is very important to her. So if you think I’m
going to become some little housewife and forget my career, forget it.’ Now, he’s from
Texas. I told him, ‘If you plan on going back to Texas and becoming an oilman, you’re
marrying the wrong girl! I’m willing to live in New York,L.A.or Paris, and that’s it!’We had a good laugh out of that, but
I meant it. Let’s be real. Don’t pretend you’re someone to me, and then be something else. He wasn’t that way at all
and never had any intention of being that way. But it was like, let’s really be honest with each other, you know? So,we
totally agreed with each other’s goals before we ever got married, and I think that was really valuable.”

“I’m always asked about plastic surgery,” Joan says. “Half my emails are about it. So I
wrote a book: Men are Stupid…and They Like Big Boobs. I spent a year and a half
researching it and spoke to 25 different plastic surgeons, really asking questions like,
`how long does it take? How much do I need? Will it be painful? How long will you be
bruised? Who’s a good candidate?’ I’m a great advocate of it,obviously. And as long as I
feel it’s necessary, or if I see myself on camera and it looks horrible, I’ll go back. If my doctor says, `you’re healthy and
you can do it if you want to,’I say yes.”
Asked if catering to the desires of stupid men and to the shallow demands of pop culture wasn’t sending a particularly empowering message to young women, Rivers turns only briefly defensive. “Who are we kidding? The message
is sent every time you open a magazine or pass a newsstand. When was the last time you saw an ugly cheerleader?
When was the last time the big ugly fatso with pimples all over her face got to be prom queen? I’m not sending any
message. I’m just saying,I wanna look nice. I’d rather have a new face in an old car.”

the actress shrugs.“I was never a big partier, never went out a lot. I even stayed away from

“I’m really grateful for
having my childhood on
Long Island. I really feel
blessed. I went to the
Wheatley school system, which is consistently on Newsweek’s top 100 public schools. My education was fantastic and could beat
any private school’s expensive education. What was also
great was that I went to school with kids of all socioeconomic levels. There were kids from government
housing and very wealthy kids from Old Westbury. I
think that was a good way to grow up and gave you
exposure to all kinds of people and everybody was
equal.
So many of my memories were playing outside in the
street, going trick or treating without your parents, selling Girl Scout cookies…. It was a different world. It was
great to have this Mayberry everyday life and be able to
hop on a train or drive with your parents to the city and
have the greatest city in the world at your doorstep. It
was a wonderful way to grow up”

You had a tumultuous relationship with William Hurt.Despite the abuse, you continued to
go back to him. What did you learn about yourself from that relationship? Have you heard
from Mr. Hurt since the book came out?
“I learned that the only person who could stop the abuse was me. One can never depend on
the other person to just stop. In other words, you just have to get out if you want it to stop.
Perhaps I love too much, and it blinded me to the truth. But thank goodness I saw the truth and got out. As for Mr.Hurt,I did
hear from him via E!,and he expressed regret and stated that ‘we’had apologized to each other long ago.I want to reiterate
that I only wish him peace but that I would appreciate it if he didn’t use the word ‘we.’That statement was not true.”

depression, I stress that if you’re choosing the medication route, you must take it. Almost
within a month of my diagnosis and treatment – it’s not like I had a `Eureka!’moment;it was
more like, `Oh, that motor in my brain isn’t racing anymore.’ Remember that 25 years ago, I
had to figure out what normal was. And I’ve been very fortunate in that the side effects are
very minor. No kidney issues. If I’m not drinking enough water in a warm climate,I notice a metallic taste, but that’s it. Plus,
I’ve retained enough of my neuroses to be interesting,I hope.”

“I’ve been in mental hospitals. Lots of them, in Connecticut and London. People have an
image. I mean, nothing could ever be as bad as the words,‘mental hospital’or ‘institutionalized’if someone commits you. But they’re not country clubs. They’re places you go because
you’re a danger to yourself – as with drug addiction – or you display suicidal behavior. My
judgment was impaired, and I was taking a lot of drugs. But for me, it wasn’t about killing
yourself; it was just as a way to turn off your mind. ‘Anywhere but here.’ That’s what you wanna feel. Because you have no
insulation;everything hurts you so bad. And it takes an alcoholic to always think the solution is booze.”

The woman whose beauty has been a confirmed fact for decades openly acknowledges her own doubts about her physical attributes. At the peak of her career,
Playboy dubbed her the “Most Desired Woman of the ‘70s.” Ironically, no one was
more surprised than her, by the label of sex symbol. “I never got it. I always
thought,‘Someone is going to find out any minute now. I’m a regular person. As

“You could never do a show like ours today when they spend about a $1.98 to do a reality show. We had a 28-piece orchestra, 12 dancers, elaborate sets and costumes. At
times,we did these long tribute medleys that today would cost maybe $50,000 to clear.
Before,we just got their permission because they wanted their music on the air.
Also, teenagers who don’t remember what variety shows were like run a lot of these
networks. At one time in the ‘70s, there were nine variety shows. I remember being at the Kennedy Center Honors
about 15 years ago, sitting next to Larry Gelbart, and I asked him,“Larry, what is it with sitcoms today?”There were very
few sitcoms that you could just latch onto and that weren’t formulaic. And he said,‘Carol,a lot of these writers on these
sitcoms today, they never played stickball in the street. They were raised watching television,so they are writing about
life once removed.’ Kids don’t just go out and play and use their imagination and make up characters like they used to.
I just don’t think that happens today.”
Lucie

“My mother didn’t have the innate instinct of what it’s like to be sitting and playing
mommy-daughter games. And when she grew up, what my mother knew how to do
really well was work. When she needed to calm down or feel better or run away from
an emotion, she worked. Whether it was at the studio,or cleaning out a garage,or sorting through her clothes in the closet or cleaning silver – she worked. To sit on the carpet and just play with the kids didn’t come naturally. Which was really interesting because I didn’t find it natural, either.
So you start to see the cycles, and you think,`Somebody’s gotta throw a monkey wrench in the cycle,or else it’ll go on
like that forever.’”

exactly what I want.
You cannot be a
writer if you’re going
to think to yourself, ‘Oh, my Aunt Enid’s going to
read that, and she’s not going to like it.’You’re your
characters, and characters can do everything. For
example, in Poor Little Bitch Girl, I write about a
black rapper, a gangbanger, a politician, a girl who’s
pregnant and not married,kidnappers,prostitutes –
and I become the characters when I’m writing
them, but I’m never embarrassed because it’s not
me, it’s my characters. A storyteller has to feel that
way. I would say to anybody out there who wants
to be a writer:You have to be true to yourself and
not worry what other people are going to think
about it.”

Asked if her very active love and sex life of the 1960s was a rebellion against her conservative upbringing,MacLaine retorts,“Why do you say the 60s? It was the 60s,the 70s,the 80s,

doing it because I was attracted to whoever the man was. I was a serial monogamist. I didn’t have affairs too often, but I did once or twice. But I’ve learned that when you’ve got the
sexual tension out of a relationship, or when it tames down, you’re more honest about things. So I have relationships now
where sex is still nice, but it’s not as intense as it was when I was younger. That makes it possible to establish more equal
