Hunehune Kalo - Kanu o ka `Āina New Century Public Charter School
Hunehune Kalo Volume 13 Issue 19 January 17, 2013 Weekly Newsletter Mana‘o Nui Kanu o ka ‘Äina New Century Public Charter School Aloha mai käkou Culture-based education. What is it? When I graduated from Kanu o ka ÿÄina in 2001, I was convinced that a culturally based education was simply one that focused on content that could be deemed “cultural.” Through the years, however, as I’ve continued my own education—as both a student and a teacher — I’ve come to look at it quite differently. This new perspective is what I humbly share with of all of you in the hopes that it will help us to continually define and redefine what it means to be forerunners in the movement to make education culturally-relevant, culturally-appropriate, and truly culturally-based. I live by the belief that culture is not something to learn, but something to remember, something that is a part of us even before we choose to acknowledge it. I live by the belief that when we master the art of using our hips to propel our movement into the next käholo, or when we finally realize the way our mouth fits perfectly around the vowels of our ÿölelo, or when our hands naturally know how to hold stems and cordage together to craft a lei, that we are in fact remembering, reawakening something that was always in us. These are our memories. Yet, what does this mean for culture-based education? As educators, once we understand that our students are in the process of remembering their cultural legacy, their cultural inheritance, we can then cease trying to fill their ÿumeke, their gourds of knowledge, with what we deem important and can truly begin to help to guide them on their own cultural journey. This is our burden and our responsibility: as teachers, we need to tap into what exists, into what was handed down to our students by generations of küpuna who once shouldered the weight of our people; we need to tap into memories unrealized and give them an avenue to see themselves; we need to build on who they are rather than trying to define that for them. This is the kuleana. Yet, the ability to do so isn’t easily attained. How do we build on ancestral memory when we do not understand culture ourselves? The answer is clear: we learn. How do we help students to remember how to respect when we do not understand how our küpuna viewed this concept? We learn. How do we encourage students to strive to be the best of who they were when we do not yet understand our own past? We learn. It is that simple. We cannot support the cultural growth of our students unless we first begin to remember ourselves, for when we are oblivious, when we have yet not tapped into our own ancestral memory, we have no avenue for guiding or understanding the journey that our students must make. This is the kuleana. We must give our students the chance to breathe, to grow, to expand, guiding them along the way while also recognizing that they have the potential to help us tap into parts of ourselves that we have forgotten. When we are not familiar with something, we must give them the room to teach us. We must help them on their path by giving them the chance to help us on ours. Then we’ll carry the weight of our people together, each of us armed with the courage and the wisdom to lead. This is culture-based education. It is a remembering. It is an honoring. It is a coming into who we are, who we were, and who we are meant to be. Naÿu nö me ka mahalo, Na Emalani Case ‘Ölelo No‘eau He aliÿi ka ÿäina; he kauwä ke kanaka The land is a chief; man is its servant.
