SAGANO
Sagano is a very scenic and quiet area and is designated as a scenic and historic area, and it is very near to
Arashiyama, one of the busiest tourist spots in Kyoto. There is a farming field which is cultivated by local
farmers and seasonal flowers blooming in the field tell us the changing of the seasons. There are many
temples and shrines of historic value within walking distance of “The Sagano House.” You may feel that
time runs slower in Sagano.
You may access the website below for more English information of Arashiyama and Sagano area and
general Kyoto. http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e3912.html

On Arriving at the Sagano House
1. On arrival at the house, you will be met by the local staff member (This will be arranged prior to ) who will brief you on the operations of the house
security, heating and cooling systems, how the kitchen utensils, TV, sound system, phone, internet, washing machine, window shutters, door-locks,
and hot water systems work. Instructions will be in a folder in the house but you will be verbally briefed /shown as well.
2. It is important that you ask questions and become fully acquainted with all the facilities and attributes of the house, as it will ensure a trouble-free
stay. Remember….everything labelled on equipment is in Japanese and designed for them; the logic of operation is often alien to westerners. If
travelling in a party or group, make sure several of you get to know the instructions. Do not hesitate to ask questions repeatedly so as to get
full familiarization, especially with equipment which can break easily or where you may miss out on important functionality. Note that you may wish
to bring CDs or DVDs or have the music available on I-pad or I phone I-Pod, for which equipment is available.
3, Beds may be made up or the futons available in the cupboard for individual allocations and sleeping arrangements. The staff member will show you
how to make the futon; storage cupboards in each room allow you to move the bed out of the way during the day if you so wish.
4. A cupboard in the kitchen ( the lock’s combination will be supplied as part of your ticketing arrangements), or a basket on the bench, contains
immediate essentials such as tea and biscuits, coffee, long-life milk, and basic starter items to tide you over until you can visit the supermarket nearby
( you may see the convenience store Lawsons, and the main supermarket further in the distance whilst you are walking to the house). Please advise
in advance if you wish to have a starter pack of groceries purchased and awaiting you on arrival. Reimbursement will be direct to the local staff
member, so please be sure to have Japanese currency with you.
5. Note that the stairway is steep and without rails and that children and older people may need close supervision in its use. It is definitely preferable that
children and older people be accommodated downstairs and restricted from upstairs.
6. Please note the detailed instructions regarding using the Japanese bath at Sagano house. When turning the water on to fill the bath please start the
flow gradually and then progressively –and gradually --increase it to full strength. This is very important.
7. Internet (optical fibre) is connected to the house; the cable connection works very well. Wi Fi is also available but sometimes connection is difficult.
A phone is connected as well; please note the number as it may be required if you rent a bicycle or some other equipment, together with the house
address. This phone is not normally for making outside calls except in emergency or to contact the house managers. If a call is made internationally
in emergency, then please abide with the honesty box located in the kitchen, and deposit Yen 250 for every minute used.
8. Yukatas are provided for all adult guests, for general use within the house as well as for use as sleeping apparel. Please do not remove these from the
premises. If you would like one to take home you may purchase ( a better) one from Daimaru or Isetan Departments stores for around Y4500.
9. Shoes must be removed prior to mounting the floor inside the entrance vestibule; slippers or bare feet are acceptable; however, stockinged feet may
slip on the wooden floors and steps and are not recommended.
10. House guests will be issued with a maximum of two sets of keys; please acquaint yourselves with how to close each door effectively—especially the
main door which can be a little tricky. Also remember to bend low when exiting the gate –and protect your head!
