SIKH WEDDINGS
A Sikh Punjabi wedding is anything but
simple. As Indians are quickly populating
the west weddings are becoming more and
more extravagant. Today Sikh weddings
are often made up of a mix of deep rooted
traditions with a modern flare. Together
with all of the different customs that go
along with the Sikh wedding all friends
and family need to set almost a month
aside for the celebrations. When planning
for a Sikh wedding it is safe to begin at
least one year in advance. You will need
at least one year to mess up on every
decision you make, accommodate all of
the opinions coming at you from people
who you don’t even know, and figure out
where you’re going to fit your thousand
something guests invited to the wedding.
8 | AlbertaWeddingsPlanner.com
Sikh weddings aren’t just about the union
of two people. They are about two families
joining together which is one of the
reasons why each person in the family has
a very important part to play. The wedding
begins when two people agree to marry
one another. Both families exchange
sweets and finalize the wedding during
a small get together called the Takka or
Rokh. During this time a date is set for
the wedding and the planning begins.
The first ceremony is the Shagan which
is done well before the wedding. During
this time the bride’s family gives gifts to
the groom often in the form of gold and
money. Many decide to give a gold kara
which is one of the symbols that represents
Sikhs. Now and days people often combine
this ceremony with the Chooni Chara and
sometimes even with the Jago. During
the Chooni Chara the groom’s family
brings gifts for the bride’s family and
they decorate the bride with jewelry,
mehndi, soorma (a traditional eyeliner)
and of course a beautiful chooni (a scarf
like veil) to make her feel loved and a part
of the family. The bride and groom then
exchange rings making the engagement
official and then the best part: almost all
of the guests (and usually it’s at least 100)
make it rain on the bride and groom. Each
family goes up to the couple and drops
some cash in both their laps while taking a
picture with them. By the end of the night
the couple has made a huge sum of money.
I’ve even heard stories of blank checks
being thrown into
the mix! It’s safe
to say the couple
will be well on
their way with a fat
pocket in married
life. Cha Ching!
Now and days
people do the Jago
ceremony
right
after. Jago which
means
“wakeup” was traditionally done by all of the
women. They would dance and sing with
lanterns on their heads in the middle of the
night trying to wake the whole village up
to celebrate with them. Some people still
do this around their communities while
others opt out for a hall. The rowdier you
can get the better. Women often end up
breaking some of the instruments used
during this celebration by playing them
extra hard. Think a rap off slash dance
off but done by your grandmothers while
they strategically balance a lantern on
their heads. This ceremony is the one time
you will hear foul language from the most
unexpected women. It’s a sight to see.
As we approach the week of the wedding
there are a few preparation ceremonies
that take place. The Mehndi takes place
first in the bride’s home where she gets all
of her mehndi (henna) designs drawn all
over her arms and legs. The close female
family members and friends on both sides
get there’s done as well. The Maaya is
done individually at both the bride and
groom’s home the following day. During
this celebration family members rub a
yellow paste all over them. Traditionally
this was meant to be a facial to brighten
the complexion but now and days people
take the opportunity to smear the paste
all over the bride or the groom in the most
hard to reach places making them feel
as uncomfortable as possible and have
a most difficult time removing it. It’s all
good fun of course.
The women sing
songs and hold a
brightly
colored
cloth over the bride
or the groom’s head
shading them as
this usually takes
place
outside.
After the facial
is complete the
mother gathers the
colored rice that
was placed in a pattern on the floor and
puts handmarks on the side of the house
to signify that her child is getting married.
On the night before the wedding the bride
begins to get ready with the help of her
uncles on her mother’s side. They dip her
choora (bangles) in milk and put them
on her preparing her for the next day.
Usually the bride attempts to sleep early
while the rest of the family continues to
celebrate. On the wedding day everyone
has to wake up extra early, especially the
bride, as it takes her an hour to get ready
at the very least. The bride usually wears
a stunning red langa and covers herself in
AlbertaWeddingsPlanner.com | 9
sparkling jewelry and the groom usually
wears an echkin and a paag and carries
a sword. The groom will often grow out
his beard for the wedding to ensure he
has the traditional Sardar look. The bride
arrives at the gurudwara (temple) first and
hides in a room with her sisters. The groom
arrives next, usually in a very extravagant
way, and the Milni begins. During the Milni
all of the men on both sides of the family
put lays around each other’s necks and
accept each other as new family members.
Often times the brothers on either side
will have a contest to see who can
pick who up first in order to display
their strength. A prayer is done
and they go inside for refreshments
before settling into the main hall.
All of the guests and the groom’s
side listen to welcoming hymns as
they settle in. Finally the beautiful
bride and her family come in to the
main hall and everyone awes at her
for the first time. She sits beside the
groom in front of the Guru Granth
Sahib and the wedding begins. The
granthi (priest) introduces the bride
and the groom and their parents stand up
for a prayer. The bride’s father then comes
and drapes the pala (a red scarf) over
the groom’s shoulder and places it in his
daughter’s hands symbolizing his approval
of their hands joint in marriage. They listen
to the religious hymns sung by the raagis
and then the laavan begin. The bride and
the groom both stand up and slowly walk
around the Guru Granth Sahib clockwise
with the groom leading beginning the first
laav. The bride’s brothers stand waiting
to help her around putting a supporting
arm on her in order to comfort her during
this very emotional time. The couple
walks around the Guru Granth Sahib four
times. This is called the laavan which are
the process of joining two souls together
so that they become one soul within
two bodies, traditionally a very spiritual
experience. After the laavan are done the
10 | AlbertaWeddingsPlanner.com
couple is officially married and they sing
more prayers to conclude the ceremony.
The Gurudwara prepares langar (blessed
lunch) and everyone eats. Throughout the
wedding the bride’s sisters and friends
usually try and steal the groom’s shoes so
that he has to pay them before they give
it back to him. In more recent days the
pranks are becoming bigger and bigger
and often end up in a battle between the
friends on both sides. After the Gurudwara
the couple and close family and friends
go to the bride’s house for tea. The sisters
stand at the front of the door with
a ribbon tied at the entry way and
harass the groom for more money
before they allow him in. Both sides
tease each other back and forth
until finally the groom gives the
sisters money and they allow him to
come in and take their sister. After
all of the jokes and fun are over it
is time for the very serious moment
where the bride leaves her house
and family to go start her new life.
She says goodbye to her family and
leaves with her husband and new
family. Traditionally her brothers would
carry her to her new home but now that
we have cars and limos the brothers only
push the vehicle until it drives away. In
the evening, or sometimes the next day,
the reception takes place. The groom’s
side hosts the reception and after the
cake cutting everyone celebrates and
dances the night away until early the next
morning. These are often the most rowdy
parties where everyone finally lets loose.
The next day the newlywed couple comes
back to the bride’s house as guests and the
family lets them sit back and serves them
dinner. The Sikh wedding is a long and
emotional process but it is loads of fun and
great family bonding as well. It’s important
not to get lost in all of the planning and
remember the true meaning is the magical
union of two souls and two families. AWP
HINDU WEDDINGS
Hinduism, being one of the oldest
religions alive today, has one of the
most beautiful and traditional wedding
ceremonies that acts as the foundation
of weddings for many other religions as
well. The Hindu wedding begins when two
people and their families decide that they
are going to marry. As Hinduism can be
a very superstitious religion, often times
they will call in a Pandit (Hindu priest) to
come in and tell them which date works
best for them. He will read the stars and
birth signs and come up with an answer
and then the wedding date is set. After this
the engagement ceremony or Mangni is
held where the couple exchanges rings and
gifts are given to both sides of the family
usually in the form of gold, jewelry, sweets,
and clothes. Some Hindu’s still decide to
take part in the dowry tradition where
the bride’s side of the family gives money
and gold to the groom’s side of the family.
After the wedding has been publicly
announced through the engagement
party the preparation ceremonies begin.
This includes the Mehndi (Henna) where
intricate designs are drawn onto the bride
(often time’s the Mehndi artist will hide
the groom’s name in the mehndi designs
which he later has to find) and the Vatna
where a yellow paste made from turmeric
and flour is rubbed all over the bride and
groom individually in their homes. This was
traditionally meant to be a facial and is
done during other neighbouring religion’s
weddings as well. Women generally sing
while doing this and friends and families
AlbertaWeddingsPlanner.com | 11
take the opportunity to bully the bride or
groom (especially the groom) by rubbing
the paste all over him. The night before the
wedding the bride’s uncle’s on her mom’s
side dip her choora (bangles) in milk and
put them on her. The next day the bride and
groom meet at the mandar or at another
prepared location to have the wedding
ceremony. The bride will traditionally wear
red and be covered in jewelry sparkling
from head to toe. The groom usually wears
an echkin and a turban. Unlike the Sikh
groom the hindu groom will usually not
keep a beard and his turban will be more
decorative and shaped a little differently.
Sometimes all of the close male guests
decide to wear pink decorative turbans
as well. The groom usually enters with his
whole entire family (the burat) in a very
extravagant way. Sometimes they choose
to arrive on horses or other animals.
When the groom walks in the bride’s mom
does arti which is when she takes a steel
plate with different powders, oils and a
diva (candle) in it and circle’s around his
12 | AlbertaWeddingsPlanner.com
head welcoming him. Then the couple
exchanges flower lays accepting one
another. Everyone then takes their seats in
front of the pandit and a fire pit. The bride
and groom sit right beside one another
closest to the pandit and firepit. The fire
is then lit and they call upon the fire god
agni to witness the wedding. The bride’s
father puts his daghter’s hand on the
groom’s hand requesting him to accept
her as an equal partner and both the bride
and groom’s scarves are tied together
showing their promise to one another in
front of God. The pandit begins his prayers
for the bride and groom and their long
and happy journey together. Everytime he
says “swaha” the bride and groom, in their
joint hand, throw rice into the fire feeding
agni (the fire God) and burning evil.
After this the couple stands up to do the
Mangalphera which is where the bride and
groom walk around the fire seven times.
The bride and groom take turns leading
around the fire. The groom lead’s for four
of the rounds and the bride leads for three.
As they walk around the guests all throw
flowers at them. It truly is a magnificent
sight. After the seven rounds are complete
the couple is officially married and the
groom then takes sandhoor (a red lead
powder) and marks his wife’s forehead
for the first time to symbolize that she is
now married. He also puts a gold necklace
around her neck called the magalasutra
which also symbolizes a married woman.
Both the parent’s then give aashirvad
which a blessing where the bride and
groom touch their feet and they place their
hands on their heads to bless them. After
the wedding ceremony, lunch is served
and all of the guests give shagan which
is a small (or big) donation of money to
the couple to bless them in their new life.
After all of the ceremonies at the mandar
are done the close wedding party goes to
the bride’s home where they have the doli.
The doli is the most emotional part of the
wedding where the bride officially says
goodbye to her home and family to start
her new home. She throws rice behind
her in every direction blessing her family
before she leaves. This is, often times, the
hardest ceremony to watch. Traditionally
the bride’s brothers would have carried
her to her new home but now and days
we have cars so that is no longer required.
Once the bride and groom reach their new
home the groom’s mom welcomes her new
daughter in law by doing arti. She takes the
plate and circles it around her head and
then puts sandhoor on her forehead (this
is done quite often after you are married.
A married woman would always be seen
with a red mark on her head). As the bride
walks into the house there is usually a
bowl of rice set at the entrance. She tips
the rice over with her foot symbolizing
prosperity and goodness coming in with
her. The blessing rice is always white
representing purity. At the groom’s house
the mood is lightened and everyone joins
in on games to welcome the new couple.
In the evening or sometimes the next
day the reception is held and it is usually
quite extravagant. Everyone dances and
feasts to celebrate the marriage, a great
way to conclude the ceremonies. AWP

MUSLIM WEDDINGS
Because Muslims populate much of the
world the Muslim wedding is one of the
most widely practiced weddings in which
there are multiple variations. One thing
all the weddings have in common is the
showcasing of the beautiful modest bride.
Muslim weddings, specifically originating
in the Pakistani area, are definitely a sight
to see should you be so lucky to be invited to
one. The Pakistani Muslim wedding begins
with the preparation ceremonies which
are quite similar to their Hindu and Sikh
counterparts. The Mehndi and the yellow
paste facial take place first sometime
throughout the week. The Mehndi designs
are usually drawn on quite carefully
with close attention to detail. The bride
14 | AlbertaWeddingsPlanner.com
receives the most intricate and beautiful
designs whereas the rest of the women
receive simpler ones. After this friends
and family proceed to rub a yellow paste
made from turmeric and flour all over
the bride. During this ceremony the bride
often wears a bright yellow color. This was
originally meant to brighten the skin but
now is just used for customary reasons.
there will be a Nikah taking place after
the prayers. The groom’s side, formally
known as the burat, arrives first and takes
their place in the wedding ceremony. The
bride comes in next and is usually dressed
beautifully (traditionally in red), sparkling
from head to toe wearing all types of
interesting jewelry. There’s no such thing
as too much when you’re a bride. After the
beautiful bride takes her place the Nikah
begins. During the Nikah the Mulana asks
both the bride and groom’s consent to
marry and they respond saying “kabool
hai” which is the Christian equivalent of
“I do”. There must be witnesses present
from both sides. The bride and the groom
then sign the Muslim marriage contract
which binds the couple together and tells
how much dowry the groom is going to
give to the bride. Traditionally, the bride
was given a large sum of money which
she could use for whichever reason she
pleased. Now and days the groom doesn’t
always give money to the bride. After the
papers are signed and both people agree
the wedding is finalized. All of the guests
give money to the couple turn by turn and
by the end they have a load of it as people
are always quite generous during this
time. After the Nikah the burat, either at
the Mosque or the bride’s home, officially
takes the bride and she says goodbye to her
family to join her new one. This is usually
the most emotional moment during the
wedding which symbolizes one chapter
in the bride’s life closing in order to open
a new one. On a lighter note, sometime
throughout the wedding the bride’s sisters
and friends desperately attempt to steal
the groom’s shoes in order to make him
pay them money. There’s always a time
for money within the extravagance of the
wedding.
During the evening or the next day there
is a celebration called Valima in which
everyone celebrates the wedding. This
ceremony is usually hosted by the groom’s
side of the family. During the Valima
everyone does a prayer (Tilawat: verse
from the Koran) for the bride and the
groom’s long and happy married life. This
is sometimes done earlier. Some people
choose to separate the men and the women
and have them celebrate in separate parts
of the hall while others decide to have
everyone sit together. Often times, poems
are recited for entertainment. After all of
the formalities are complete there is food
and dance and the ceremony is completed.
The Muslim wedding is a simple yet
beautiful union of two people. It is the one
time a bride does not have to hold back on
her beauty and can let it shine to the fullest
in all of her modesty. A Muslim wedding
has tons of room for individual preferences
and often times we will see variations
within the weddings to best express the
specific couple joining in marriage.
The next day is when the Nikah takes
place which is when both the bride and
groom consent to marry and spend the
rest of their lives together. After the
Mulana or Mulvi (which is the Muslim
Priest) verifies that the couple are, in fact,
active Muslims he agrees to the wedding
ceremony and publicly announces that

CHRISTIAN WEDDINGS
If we were to use one word to describe
the Christian wedding it would simply
be elegance. From the ivory dresses and
candelabras to the wedding March and
flower petals the Christian wedding, in
its simplicity, is one of the most elegant
ceremonies out there. The Christian
wedding begins when a couple agrees to
get married usually there is a proposal
and a diamond ring given to the woman.
After this moment the planning begins.
The Christian wedding takes place in a
church of some sort and the attention is
usually focused upon the bride. The bride
traditionally wears a beautiful white dress
with simple jewelry and sometimes a veil
to cover her face. Often times the bride
will choose to follow the old poem which
16 | AlbertaWeddingsPlanner.com
all of them there is more meaningful and
a way to honour the generations before.
The minister and the groom then enter.
If the groomsmen are not escorting the
bridesmaids then they enter with the
groom and the minister as well. The
bridesmaids enter, often with a bouquet
in hand, or escorted by the groomsmen.
They take their place standing at the front,
the groomsmen behind the groom, and
the bridesmaids behind where the bride
will be. The maid of honour and the best
man then enter in and take their places
closest to where the bride and groom
will be. After them the flower girl and the
ring bearer enter. The flower girl usually
sprinkles flowers down the aisle so that
the bride has a blanket of them to walk on.
Everyone then rises as the wedding march
begins and the bride enters escorted by her
father. They slowly walk down the aisle to
the alter and the father gives his daughter
away to the groom. The minister then
gives some opening remarks and does an
opening prayer and asks everyone to be
seated. The minister does wedding prayers
and wills the couple to take part in the
pledge and then finally the wedding vows.
During the wedding vows the minister
asks both the bride and groom if they will
make promises to one another and they
respond by saying “I do”. After the vows
the ring bearer brings the rings and they
are exchanged. The unity candle is lit and
there is a closing prayer. When all is done
the minister tells the groom that he may
kiss the bride. They kiss for the first time as
a married couple and the priest presents
them as so. The wedding party then exits
the platform and then the rest of the guests
are dismissed concluding the wedding.
After the wedding the couple gets their
pictures taken and they proceed to the
reception party where they eat, dance,
and celebrate the wedding. The bride and
groom will often have their first dance in
front of everyone before everyone joins in.
The Christian wedding is truly one of the
most romantic. Christian weddings have a
lot of room for individual interpretation and
creative expression so each wedding has
the potential to be different from the last.
lists all of the things a bride is meant to
wear, “something old, something new,
something borrowed, something blue,”
which is meant for good luck. After the
bride is completely ready she stays hidden
from all of the guests and the groom.
Traditionally the groom was meant to
first see the bride when she walks down
the aisle but some people decide to
have an intimate moment beforehand
in order to catch that “first look”.
Before the guests arrive the candles are lit

A beautiful marriage is not found within
the extravagance of a wedding but in the
comfort and knowledge of knowing you
are joining with your best friend to spend
the rest of your lives together. This came
across quite clearly through the interview
conducted with Shalini and Nick. Although
the couple faced many challenges on their
wedding day they remained happy and,
through their story, give us all a little hope
that true love really does exist. Shalini and
Nick met through an online dating site but
had their first date together at a pub. After that moment they literally became inseparable. “All I wanted was to see his face
first thing in the morning and the last face I
saw as I closed my eyes to sleep…I know it
sounds cliche but there was no separating
us, we just wanted to spend every waking moment with each other and if not in
56 | AlbertaWeddingsPlanner.com
person then we’d be on the phone till we
both fell asleep (even when we both had
to get up at 5am for work)” said Shalini recalling when the moment she knew that
Nick was the man she wanted to spend
the rest of her life with. Nick did his best to
impress Shalini from organizing a romantic
proposal to pretending like he loved her
spicy cooking. “He would eat my homemade spicy food and not complain even
though there were tears in his eyes and
his face and ears were red (he would just
say it was yummy) and then would down a
few big glasses of water” said Shalini, “he
would put himself out there just to get a
smile on my face.” These self-sacrificing incidents are not only beyond cute but also
the reason Shalini fell head over heels for
Nick and the reason she said yes during his
proposal. Although Shalini was all smiles
the proposal was quite the nerve wrecker
for Nick. “It was a complete disaster in the
start. I planned to take her to the park and
have a picnic waiting there for her, rose
petals, champagne, the whole works. I
even had a cake. First it took all day and by
the time everything was setup it was the
afternoon. It was impossible to trick her
into coming to the park with me because
I’m a horrible liar and she questioned every single one of them to get her there.
When she came into the park she noticed
the picnic from far away. On the cake I had
got her, it wrote, ‘Will you marry Shalini?’,
instead of ‘Will you marry ME Shalini?’”
said Nick. Even though he made a few
mistakes it was the thought that counted
and, for Shalini, the mistakes made it that
much more memorable “all I could do
was laugh but [it] made the proposal very
memorable!” They began planning for the
wedding a few weeks after the proposal
and in Shalini’s words, “it definitely was a
roller coaster, lots of ups and downs but
definitely more ups then downs.” For future couples Nick sums it up quite nicely,
“Stick together, plan ahead, and don’t wait
till the last minute, before you know it, it
will be the wedding day.”
Planning weddings is always bumpy, “you
have to consider the suggestions of 2 families plus your partner,” said Shalini. But the
couple was blessed with understanding
parents and didn’t have any serious problems with this, “my parents and my in laws
left most of the decision making with me
as well as Nick, they just kept reminding
me ‘budget, budget, budget’. Other than
that both set of parents at the end of the

day wanted us both to be happy,” but
“when it came to traditional decision making for the wedding part we left that with
the parents as both me and Nick are not
very traditional.” The couple, with the help
of their parents planned a beautiful dream
wedding, that is, until, “It rained!!! We
were supposed to have this beautiful outdoor garden wedding but after 30 some
days of no rain it decided to rain on our
wedding day. So the wedding was moved
indoors, with last minute decor changes
being done on the phone and my dad supervising at the venue. Was a bit of a gong
show as we didn’t have a definite plan as
we were sure it would be sunny. I admit I
cried and freaked out for a bit in the morning but it all was beautiful in the end and I
got to marry the man of my dreams,” said
Shalini. With the help of their families, last
58 | AlbertaWeddingsPlanner.com
minute changes, and, of course, a good attitude the couple managed to save their
dream wedding. The process of planning
was a little bit harder, “I am not organized
at all. I lost most of my papers. I made
an appointment and forgot about it until
my wife reminded me about it. My wife,
on the other hand, is the most organized.
She had a binder, knew and kept track of
everything,” said Nick. “I had a wedding
binder with tabs for each vendor and my
entire wedding planning revolved around
it, I took it to all my appointments. Stay focused on one vendor at a time, hence time
management is extremely important, take
the time and plan out vendors from most
important to least and stay focused on one
for a few weeks until you book and move
on to the next. Otherwise too much on
your plate equals major stress! I would say
give yourself a good year to plan depending upon size of wedding. I did most of
the planning myself as I am pretty OCD as
my husband would say but definitely had
close friends and family who I leaned on
when needed,” said Shalini. The most important parts of the wedding that required
extra attention due to their Indian origins
were, “for us, hospitality, food, cultural
beliefs and traditions, we believe no one
will remember what the bride and groom
wore or what the venue looked like but the
hospitality, food and traditions will never
be forgotten,” said Shalini, “photography
and videography are extremely important
[as well] cause at the end of the day that’s
all we’re gonna’ have to look back at.” So
make sure you, “do your research, make
different appointments with different
companies, take a look at their work and
look for online reviews. Most importantly
ensure you can build a positive relationship with them, you have to feel comfortable working with them in order to create
good pictures. Our most important investment was videography and photography,
we were extremely lucky to have found
2 great vendor who we enjoyed working
with and loved their originality that came
through in their work. Me and Nick had a
lot of fun with our photo-shoots, it was
fun and relaxing.” Although weddings now
and days can end up being extremely expensive Shalini offers some money saving
techniques that helped her with the planning of the wedding, “You can save money depending on how creative you get, I
made my own wedding centrepieces with
the help of family and it saved me a lot.
Cut cost where you think it’s not needed,

for example chair covers, linens, venue
location, wedding cards, see what you
can do yourself or with the help of some
creative ideas from friends and family.”
It was a bumpy ride for Nick and Shalini
but they did their best and succeeded in
having a beautiful wedding. The couple
offers advice to future couples in order to
stay happy along the stressful way, “From
engagement to wedding you are going to
live, breathe, and sleep wedding make
sure you are there for your partner at any
cost even if it consists of staying up late
when having to get up early, it’s not just
your wedding it’s yours and your fiance’s
wedding. It’s going to be stressful, that’s
just life, deal with it. Don’t forget to take
breaks from wedding planning, like going
out for dinner with your finance and talking about other things not wedding relat-
60 | AlbertaWeddingsPlanner.com
ed. Stick together, plan ahead, and don’t
wait till the last minute, before you know
it, it will be the wedding day.” said Nick.
And Shalini agrees, “it can be extremely
stressful but take a deep breath and make
sure you involve each other in all decision
making, and stop and enjoy each moment
cause at the end of it you’ll be like ‘I can’t
believe it’s already over!’ Enjoy each other
and enjoy the ride. It’s an exciting time,
stop and savour all the special moments
and don’t’ just let it slip by.”
Now the married couple has to face a new
set of challenges in married life and are
going forth with a positive attitude and a
genuine love for one another, “now that
we are married, I can’t wait to see her after I am off work, or see her first thing in
the morning. Every day is a new day get-
ting to know each other better, and finding more new reasons why you love each
other,” said Nick. The most exciting part
for Shalini is, “being able to see each other
all the time whenever we want without
having to plan it out. I have a live-in best
friend and husband, couldn’t get better
then that! Everything is new, from living
with another person to being a wife, but
I love it all and enjoy each moment of it.”
Nick leaves us off with a simple line that
all couples going into marriage should remember, “Remember no matter what you
two are on the same team.” We wish Nick
and Shalini a long and happy married life
and hope their story can help you and your
partner along your journey. AWP

Through our interview conducted with
Liza and Simran it is clear that the two of
them clearly understand the teamwork
that comes behind not only the planning
of a wedding but a marriage in itself. Liza
and Simran first met at a party through
friends and soon became quite close.
Simran knew this was the girl he wanted
to marry from the beginning as they felt
comfortable around one another and
had no problem acting like themselves.
“From the beginning we were friends first
and completely comfortable around each
other. We could be ourselves and know
that we supported each other through
whatever life threw at us. This is how I knew
I could spend my life with her” said Simran
and for Liza it was the same, “I knew this
was the person I wanted to marry when I
felt like I could act like myself and not feel
judged and when he met my family he fit
right in.” They instantly fell in love with
68 | AlbertaWeddingsPlanner.com
one another, Liza with Simran’s optimism
and positive personality ,“The first thing I
noticed about Simran was that he is the
happiest of people always sporting a smile
on his face. No matter what he is doing,
he’s always happy. I think it’s important to
surround yourself with optimistic people
who make you happy,” and Simran with
Liza’s selfless care for others, “Liza is a very
selfless person and goes out of her way
to ensure everyone around her is happy
before worrying about her own needs.
She is always willing to go the extra mile
for her family and friends and find great
pleasure in helping others. I loved this
about Liza when I first met her.”
It wasn’t long before Simran put together
a very thoughtful proposal. Liza recalls the
special moment with clarity, “Being gone
to India for Christmas, I felt like I really
missed out since Christmas is one of my
most favorite times of the year. Simran
told me he had a surprise for me after
dinner one night, he finally had wrote
something in the Christmas card that he
bought a month ago in December, I felt
excited, but the most memorable part
was opening up the card and seeing such
a long message inside, and knowing what
was going to happen next.” For Simran the
most exciting part was, “seeing the look
on her face when I got down on one knee
and popped the question. It was a look of
love, shock and excitement all packed into
one expression that will always be in my
mind and I will never forget.” They began
planning soon after the proposal, “we
started planning our wedding a year before
the big day. For the most part it was fun
however the reception was in Brampton,
Ontario so I really didn’t like knowing that
I couldn’t really organize everything the
way that I would have wanted even though
we did make a couple trips out,” said Liza.
As Liza wasn’t in Brampton Simran had to
handle a little bit more of the planning.
“It is important to not forget what you as a
bride and groom want from your wedding.
With so many vendors, friends and family
members offering opinions and selling
products it is easy to lose your vision
and get sidetracked. I would recommend
putting your plan down in writing at the
beginning to help with the process,” said
Simran. But, Liza reminds us not to get to
upset if everything doesn’t go as planned,
“I think the biggest thing is knowing that
no matter how hard you try to plan out
every single detail, everything is not going
to go as planned. You need to be prepared
to not be upset and go with the flow.”
There are a lot of opinions flying around
during the process of a wedding so Simran
suggests to, “make a list of things that
are important to the both of you for the
wedding and make sure you never lose
AlbertaWeddingsPlanner.com | 69
LIZA & SIMRAN
PHOTOGRAPHY BY: STUDIO AZAD ~ MUA: ROOPSTYLE
sight of this list throughout the planning
process.” “The decisions that were very
important to us, Simran and I decided
together, such as the cake or our song for
our first dance. I also thought about things
that weren’t as important to me such as the
menu or reception entertainment. I took
everyone’s opinions into consideration
when making a decision, however on
some occasions I let Simran and our
parents handle the decision making,” said
Liza. Despite all of the planning things
always go wrong during a wedding and
it is important not to let it ruin your day.
“Looking back at my wedding many things
didn’t go as planned, but majority of it was
at my reception. At my reception there
were many things that went wrong at once
and I knew as hard as I tried I could not do
anything about it because it was beyond
my control. It took an hour to get over it,
but Simran kept saying, ‘Come on it’s our
70 | AlbertaWeddingsPlanner.com
night, why should we let little things get in
the way of having a good time?’” said Liza
and, of course, Simran is right. Having been
mentally prepared himself he was able to
calm Liza down, “speaking with family and
friends who have gone through their own
weddings I knew that I could not control
every aspect of the event and something
would definitely go wrong so it was easy for
me to deal with the changes knowing this
beforehand. At the end of the day, it was
our day and we enjoyed it no matter what
happened around us.” However, to avoid
major disappointments it’s important
to find backups. Simran, perhaps a little
extreme, suggests having a backup plan
for, “for everything! I think it is important
to think of a backup plan in your mind for
most parts of the wedding (at least for
me, I can be paranoid sometimes).” Liza
narrows in on where she found it most
necessary to have a backup plan, “I think
it’s most necessary to have a backup plan
for things that have to be done the day of
the event or the day before, such as the
decor. For our reception we were unable
to get the backdrop that we wanted as it
would block off the projector screens so
we had to come up with an alternative.”
Along with the décor it is important to test
out a few different photographers as well,
“I feel that the most important thing is
making sure the style of the photographer
matches yours. Also to make sure that
they can provide you what you want. If
you are looking for fun pictures versus
serious pictures. I would also recommend
a consultation, and see their work in
person as well as professionalism as
you would not want events getting
delayed because the photographer or
videographer was not on time,” said Liza.
And to Simran comfort is quite important
as well, “I think your comfort level with
the photographer is really important. In
order to get great pictures you have to be
comfortable in front of the camera and the
photographer plays a big role in knowing
your boundaries and making you and
your partner feel comfortable. Experience
is also a big factor, we loved that our
photographer did not shoot the usual
pictures and really experimented and
played around which made for great shots.
I think our most important investment was
our photographer as we got great pictures
that we can enjoy for a lifetime” As well as
choosing the right photographer it is also
important to choose the right makeup
and hair Liza reminds us, “I think it is very
important to do a full makeup and hair
trial, especially if you have not seen their
work before. A lot of people offer half
trials where they do your makeup but not
your hair. I feel like it is important if you
want your hair a certain way. I made this

mistake on my reception in Brampton,
and I felt like it could have been easily
avoided.” Simran also brings up a good tip
that many surprisingly don’t think about,
“Make sure you get someone to do a trial
run with your turban before the day of the
wedding. It is really hard to tie a turban
that is going to stay on for the whole day
and feel comfortable at the same time,”
and also boys, Simran regrets not having
practiced sitting, “I would have practiced
sitting cross-legged a little bit more for
the Gurdwara. It hurts if you are not used
to it,” so make sure you all practice your
flexibility before the big day. Comfort also
goes beyond the bodily complex, money
can make some quite uncomfortable as
well. Simran suggests that, “the best way
to save money is by looking for small
companies instead of big ones for the
things you need because they will pay
more attention to you, do a better job, it
72 | AlbertaWeddingsPlanner.com
will cost you less and you will be happier
at the end of the day.”
Simran and Liza ran into many roadblocks
but still managed to organize a wonderful
wedding what was their secret? “Lists!”
said Simran, “we made a list for almost
every part of the wedding and used
technology to help us by creating online
lists shared with everyone involved so
they could be updated as soon as a task
is completed. It is important to keep track
of everything because you have so many
tasks to complete to make the wedding
a success.” Liza adds in, “I took several
lists from friends, magazines or even off
the internet and made a list of things or
people that needed to be booked. As well
as items that needed to be purchased or
decisions that we had to make. I had a
lot of support from Simran (surprisingly)
as well as both of our parents to get
everything done on time,” she also, “read
through the Alberta Weddings Planner to
get ideas of things I might have not yet
considered, or overlooked. There were
many vendors also in the book which is a
big help when trying to use google to find
people in your area.” For Liza and Simran it
was most important to spend quality time
with their friends and family, “I feel like it’s
most important to think about what you
really want to get out of your special day.
At the end of the day I was so happy to
have family from all over the world to be
along my side as I took the next step in my
life. I felt like I didn’t get enough time to
spend with them and I felt the most upset
about that when the wedding was over,”
said Liza “Focus on what is important to
the both of you. For every couple it will
be something different but at the end of
the day if you get what you want you will
be the happiest. Also, make sure to enjoy
having your whole family in one place at
one time The most memorable part of the
wedding for me was being surrounded
my both of our families who were here to
celebrate the special day with us,” adds
Simran. “Everyone that I talked to advised
me that they wish they could go back and
enjoy their wedding because they were
so busy handling the smaller details. I
took this advice and tried my best to have
everything done before the festivities
started. The most memorable part of my
wedding was the first few events, and
feeling, ‘this is actually happening’,” said
Liza. Simran agrees with Liza and also adds
in that it’s important to spend time with
your partner as well, “don’t lose yourself
as a couple during the wedding and make
sure you reconnect with each other during
all the festivities so you can share in each
other’s excitement. Liza and I would take
30 minutes and go on coffee dates during
the weeks leading up to the wedding.”
Now that the dust has settled the couple
is finding marriage life both challenging
and fun. Liza finds it a bit of a challenge
adjusting away from her family, “Living
with my parents and brother before
getting married, the first week back from
our honeymoon was the hardest. I missed
my family every day and felt so strange
sleeping in a bed that wasn’t my own.
Adjusting to this change has been one of
the biggest in my life thus far. From trying
to get every chance to spend time with
Simran I now struggle to spend more time
with my family. Trying to stop by a couple
times a week and talking to my mom
every night on the phone.” But despite
this challenge Liza goes onto explain
how, “the most exciting part about being
married is living with your best friend.
Knowing that the world is our oyster and
we can do whatever we want whenever
we want.” For Simran it is quite similar,
“After spending almost a year planning
the wedding and going through all the
events it was different just setting into a
normal life after and getting used to the
day to day with your partner. The most
exciting part for me is waking up next to
Liza and knowing that I have her support
no matter what I decide to do.” The couple
leaves off with a few words of advice, “just
make sure you don’t get lost in the whole
event, try to take a step back and think of
why you are getting married, and why did
everyone travel so far and near to be there
for your special day.” We hope Liza and
Simran have a long and happy married life
as we know they put in tons of effort to
make their union special! AWP

GEENA & DAVE

That boy or girl you first meet in junior high
after years of thinking the opposite sex has
coodies you finally make your first friend
and it’s awesome. Now imagine years later
you’re both grown and your perfect partner for cops and robbers is now also your
perfect marriage partner. It is almost unheard of to be so lucky to marry your childhood friend but for Geena and Dave this
has become the greatest reality. Geena and
Dave first met in grade eight and being in
the same class together they soon became
close friends. After being friends throughout grade school Dave moved to Las Vegas
and they drifted apart. Fate brought them
back together one day when they found
one another on facebook and reconnected as if no time had passed. Coincidently
Geena was flying to Las Vegas and decided
to shoot Dave a message before arriving.
They met up and were stunned by the hotness of one another. They instantly connected, this time on a greater level, and
76 | AlbertaWeddingsPlanner.com
began dating. Dave began to fall for all
of Geena’s details including, “her fashion
sense and how she was always very stylish. She found a way to make regular outfits seem more fashionable and different…
in a good way.” Likewise, Geena noticed
everything about Dave, “aside from his
charming dimple one of the first things I
loved about Dave is how thoughtful and
loyal he is to his loved ones. He really has
a heart of gold.” After dating for a while
they realized that they were meant for one
another, “I realized he was my person. The
person I wanted to tell things to and talk
to about my days. He is the person I feel
most understood and comforted by,” says
Geena. It was only a matter of time before
Dave popped the question. He describes
the proposal recalling his most memorable
moment, “her expression when I came off
the plane dressed in a suit at the airport.
Normally I’d be wearing sweats. I surprised
her by flying into Calgary dressed up in a
suit and tie, and when I came out of the
airport gates I saw her standing there. She
was confused why I was all dressed up but
we hugged and started walking back to the
car where her family was waiting. But before we got a couple of steps I told her to
hold on and that I had something for her
and I reached into my bag and pulled out
the ring!” Geena was confused up until the
last minute. She realizes now how strategic he had been. “OMG! Looking back I can
see how everyone knew what was happening except me. And every time I am at
the Calgary airport and pass by the statue
of horses at the USA arrivals I can’t help
but smile.” And so the planning process of
the wedding began.
“I didn’t really do much because I was in
Las Vegas and Geena handled the majority
of the planning” says Dave. Geena began
planning the wedding with not exactly as
much time as she would have hoped for,
“I started planning in late February/ early
March for our wedding on July 18. I can’t
say I really enjoyed it too much because
I had a hard time juggling my ideas for
how things should be with those of our
parents and families. We had very different thoughts and feelings about things.
This was difficult. You can end up feeling
a lot of pressure from it. I think this was
actually the cause of our very first heated
‘discussion’ LOL. For me I had to prioritize
which things were really important for
me to do what I wanted and what things I
was willing to compromise on to keep the
peace. At the end of the day it was really
important to me that our parents were
happy with things as well.” Geena and
Dave needed to go into the planning of the
wedding with a certain mentality in order
to ensure their sanity, “I believe you must
have an open mind, not everything will
go your way,” instructs Dave. “Definitely, I
agree. I think you have to be open and realize the wedding is important to not just
AlbertaWeddingsPlanner.com | 77
GEENA & DAVE
PHOTOGRAPHY BY: AAA MOVIES
you but parents and close family as well.
Both of us were the first to get married
in our families so there were many things
that we compromised on to accommodate
them,” says Geena. Many decisions had to
be made for the wedding and some things
didn’t go quite as planned. When picking
a photographer Dave suggests to, “make
sure the photographer and videographer’s
style is one that matches with the type of
photos you would want. Also, “make sure
the hair/makeup people are punctual!”
Geena says “It’s always good to go with
someone that you, a family member or
friend has used before. And even if you
got a great referral you should ask to see
some photos of previous clients/wedding
parties.” To avoid troubles it is important
to look for backups.
When asked where is it most necessary to
have a backup plan Dave answers, “Probably just for the little things, the big things
78 | AlbertaWeddingsPlanner.com
like venue, photographer, and DJ I think
are gonna be booked way in advance and
should be reserved with no problems. The
smaller things like the Bride’s hair and
makeup because our guy was late and we
were afraid he wouldn’t show up.” Our initial shock at Dave’s comment was equally
felt by Geena, “The bride’s hair and make
up is considered a smaller thing? I think
not! Actually this is a great thing to have a
back up plan for because my hair & make
up person was very late and I was at the
point where I wasn’t sure if they were going to show… or have enough time to finish everything. Luckily he did make it but
if he were any later I would have had my
cousin step in.” Although the couple ran
into small complications they managed
to pull together a beautiful wedding with
an outdoor tent reception. “The most
important was the tent that we rented
which made it possible for us to have
the reception in Geena’s back yard. The
intimacy of having it at home made our
day very special and one of a kind. The
house was decorated beautifully and we
felt like a wedding like this at home could
not be duplicated. It was a great investment that saved us money from having to
rent a hall and all the expenses that come
along with that,” says Dave. The couple
pulled together with great organization
and the help of loved ones. “We had a lot
of support from people. Family and close
friends, specifically Geena’s dad did a lot
of calling around for price estimates and
making sure everything important was a
quality product. Geena also had an organizer book and another great tool to use
is pinterest, you can get really great ideas
from there,” says Dave. “I think for the
most part things went as planned. There
were a few small surprises but when it
comes to that day you just have to let go
and not sweat the small stuff. If you can
joke about the little hiccups it can still be a
great day,” Geena says. Although the wedding came together quite nicely Geena
and Dave remind future couples to, “Take
time to take photos with the people and
family you want to share the day with, as
opposed to rushing through the day just
trying to keep things running on schedule. In our opinion your timing will never
be one hundred percent on target so why
not enjoy the day! Also, the wedding party and people closest to you should have
some time to relax leading up to, and on
the big day so they can enjoy it. They do
so much for you in the time leading up to
and during the whole process they should
be able to have a good time as well.” The
couples love for not only one another but
for their friends and family comes across
clear as they describe their most memorable moments of the wedding, “There were
two moments in the actual ceremony that
have always stuck in my mind. I was not
really nervous about doing it wrong, more

like just aware of the process. So during the first round [lawaa] Geena’s uncle
was taking photos as we were walking
I saw him give me a little signal to pump
the breaks and slow down just a bit. After
the first round I looked up and saw Jesse
Mama Ji, and he just gave me a nod as if to
say ‘You did great’ and the rest was a piece
of cake! The second moment was after we
were all done and we sat back down I just
got a feeling like ‘THAT’S IT! WE DID IT!’”
says Dave. For Geena, “I think the most
memorable part of our wedding was when
Neelam [Geena’s sister] forgot to bring
the rings so we had to swing back and
get them. It was one of those things that
didn’t go according to plan but we just
laughed at the situation. My poor sister
was so tired from running around for the
wedding planning she was on the verge of
total exhaustion.” Dave’s most memorable
moment during the reception displays his
fun-loving nature and love for others, “one
80 | AlbertaWeddingsPlanner.com
of the most memorable moments for myself was when we first walked into the reception and sat down, everybody had the
urge to run up like the paparazzi and snap
some photos of us sitting down. I really felt
like we were celebrities. It was a strange
feeling because I thought to myself what’s
so special about us? And after my cheeks
had been sore from smiling all day, I picked
up my camera and returned the favor and
took a photo of the paparazzi which everyone laughed at.”
As the couple enjoyed their wedding so
much they offer advice to couples in order to make the most out of theirs as well,
“What would I have done differently? I
would have told myself to stop stressing
so much and smile more!” says Geena,
“We had the best time at the party. Once
the stress of getting things done right was
gone we could really let loose and have
fun. Spending the time with family and
friends is where it’s at for us. We recommend to find a way to squeeze in some
sleep so you can enjoy the party. Or also
have a separate less formal party where
your close friends and family are able to
hang out, it makes it so you have more
quality time with those that are closest
to you and it also gives those who are doing the planning a little down time to have
some fun. There’s so much going on during
the whole process it’s not worth the stress
of getting worked up about the small
things. Try and remember this is your day
and you would like to enjoy it.”
The wedding is over and Geena and Dave
have been together for a few years now
and explain married life is both a challenge
and an exciting adventure. “Sharing your
life with someone is definitely an adjustment. There are things you have to consider, like it’s not all about you anymore.
You do things together, you share respon-
sibilities it’s a fun and exciting new adventure every day! The exciting part is the
thoughts of what will happen next through
different stages in our lives, how we will
grow as a couple together and experience
new phases of our lives together as husband and wife, as parents, grandparents
and best friends.” Geena and Dave’s calm
and collected auras rub off on one another
and their ability to keep eachother alive
with their love makes them an admirable
couple that we can’t help but swoon at.
We’ll finish off with a quote from Dave
that is sure to bring out all the warm and
fuzzy feelings that we hope to one day receive in our future married lives, “Geena is
my best friend, and there’s nothing that I
can’t share with her. I just think we belong
together. She makes me the happiest man
in the world and she’s the perfect one for
me.” AWP

SAVINA & HARRY

Fate is what brought Savina and Harry together and is the reason they got married
and live happily today. “You know when
they say if you love something let it go and
if it comes back to you, it’s yours. And if
it doesn’t it never really was.... Well for
us I came back! We dated when we were
younger and grew apart, 4 years later at a
Jazzy B concert we reunited and the rest is
history!” says Savina recalling the incident.
When Harry first saw Savina at the concert
he knew, “I knew that was my wife right
there. Something in my heart just knew
she was my future.” He loved her style and
something about her face stood out to him
amongst the crowd. It was almost exactly
the same for Savina, “I knew he was the
one from the moment he walked back into
my life, when I looked at him I could see a
husband, a brother in law a son in law and
most of all a father to our future children.”
84 | AlbertaWeddingsPlanner.com
Savina was touched how Harry would go
out of his way to impress her, “I loved how
he would subtly try and learn about my favorite songs and shows and movies without me knowing! Just so he could impress
me!” It wasn’t long before the couple tied
the knot and with the way Harry planned
the picture perfect proposal who couldn’t
say yes and of course that was his favorite
moment. “I remember the trail of rose petals leading to a candlelit table for us two!”
says Savina. Poor Harry’s nerves must have
gotten to him because, “he forgot which
finger the ring goes on!!” but we assume
that’s what made it all the more memorable for Savina.
When we asked Savina when she began
planning for the wedding she answered, “I
began planning my wedding when I was 5
like most girls, but actually organizing this
as it is happening for real! I started about
9 months prior to the date, for the most
part I enjoyed it, however stress does take
its toll on you! So be prepared!” Harry informs us how he took a back seat to the
planning of the wedding, “she planned
everything lol and the ride is scary. She
was very.... particular lol.” The planning
process of the wedding is not the easiest,
“you need to go in knowing there’s going
to be lots of moments that test your relationship,” Harry warns us. “You need to
be absolutely serious and open minded to
listening and learning from others around
you as sometimes there more helpful than
you think!” adds Savina. The couple had
to balance their ideas with those closest
to them. “At first it was difficult to have
to blend your ideas with those coming
from your closest family members! (Especially parents who are paying for your
dream wedding) but after a few debates
you need to take time out before making
a final decision and then it’ll come to you
if you wanna blend your ideas or simply
say no,” says Savina. Things don’t always
go as planned but Savina reminds us that
sometimes it may not be such a bad thing.
“Sometimes nothing ever goes perfectly,
but I got lucky and whenever there was
a slight change it actually happened for
the best so I had to decide not to jump to
stressing out with minor changes and just
go with the flow.” The rain on the wedding
day was uncalled for, “it rained a lot the day
of, so we couldn’t take pictures outdoors
too much,” says Harry, “but the cloudy
backdrop made us look great.” To avoid
malfunctions Savina suggests a few important backups, “you definitely need back up
tailors, as wedding season comes around
you do not want to pile a bunch of outfits

on your tailor, also it’s important to have
many different hair and makeup artists in
mind, as lots of family members or bridesmaids may decide last minute they need
the services!” When picking a photographer or videographer, “make sure their
knowledgeable in Indian weddings cause
they run the show,” says Harry. “Make sure
it’s someone who you’re comfortable with
and someone who understands your style,
you wanna bounce ideas off one another
because everyone wants there pictures to
be unique and different so make sure you
have lots of communication and chemistry
with your photographer and videographer
because also in a way they are conducting
your wedding,” adds Savina. “I believe in
the past it was believed that the food and
catering were considered very important
and most bride and grooms would spend
a lot of time deciding between differ-
86 | AlbertaWeddingsPlanner.com
ent dishes, however I believe in order to
feel your best for your big day you need
to look your best, so personally I would
spend time on your artist and your video
and photographer as they will make you
shine! But don’t get me wrong you definitely need food at a wedding, but I would
say it is a bit easier picking a food dish over
a lip color! Just like your photographer and
videographer look for a makeup artist and
hair stylists who you have chemistry with,
someone who will take your ideas but also
give you an honest opinion. A makeup artist is the first person you’re gonna see the
morning of your wedding so find someone
who is caring and wants you to look your
best and help you get rid of those butterflies in your stomach!, I recommend Roopstyle” says Savina. It is also important to
have, “honest people help so get to know
whose doing your clothes and tying your
turban,” says Harry. He also suggests paying attention to smaller details, “little stuff
like liquor and peoples preferences on
drinks seemed to be important and it’s a
small detail but makes a difference.”
Throughout the planning of a wedding
Savina reminds us it is important to stay
organized and plan ahead, “A planner is
amazing because it visually shows you
how much planning you’ve done and
how much more you’ve got left, also for
a bride, her bridesmaids and family are
huge support in reminding you what’s left
to be done (even though it could get frustrating). You could save money by planning ahead, at times if you start planning
months and months prior to the wedding,
you could avoid last minute expensive decisions, because what you need is time to
look for the best deals and best services
which are easier on your pocket, the biggest investments are the photos the videos the outfits and the hair!” For Harry it
was a bit easier, “I was sent a checklist and
it worked for me.” Weddings are stressful
but Savina reminds us to pay close attention to the small moments, “It’s easy to
say ‘enjoy the ride’ because it is so difficult while your stressing about making
decisions, however I believe you need to
focus on looking forward to little things,
like seeing yourself dressed up like a princess or thinking about how your husband
will feel the second he sees you walking in
looking amazing, and then look foreword
to the minute you dance the night away
with your friends family and new partner!
One of the most fun events for me was
the pre wedding part and Jago the night
before the wedding, it’s a great time to
bond with your friends and family before

the big day!” Harry suggests taking some
personal time to stay calm throughout the
wedding process, “take breaks out where
you’re not mentioning the wedding for
a few days and just focus on a movie or
go out.” Savina regrets not doing more of
this, “If I could go back I would manage
time a bit differently and take my time to
eat and socialize more the morning of the
wedding to calm my nerves.”
The most memorable moment for Savina
as it should be was when she took her first
lamha, “I remember the moment I took
my first lamha it’s such an emotional moment but you never forget how it feels.”
That very emotional moment is just as
vivid to Harry, “when she walked into the
gurdwara she looked so amazing I still
can’t forget every detail on her.”
Now that the dust has settled the couple
88 | AlbertaWeddingsPlanner.com
is facing many changes in their marriage
life, “It’s a big change, your now a wife and
so you start to think about you and your
partner instead of just you, yourself and
I. You get to be together a lot more than
when your just dating, you wake up next
to the person you love! You couldn’t ask
for anything more!” says Savina. Overall
the couple reminds us to, “make sure you
don’t take everything too seriously and
really try to de-stress your fiancé,” says
Harry “My last word of advice would be to
keep laughing and smiling during the process if something goes wrong just take it
easy and make a joke out of it later, cause
chances are it will be solved,” says Savina.
The process of a wedding is quite the rollercoaster but Harry reminds us not to forget the reason you went into the marriage
to begin with, “I get to spend everyday
with the one person I love more than life
itself.” AWP

Beyond its stellar beaches and top notch tourist services, one of the main reasons
this Dutch Caribbean island is so popular is its predictable weather. Aruba is arid

Los Cobos
TOP 10
TROPICAL WEDDING DESTINATIONS
9. Los Cabos
Famous for its magnificent arches (Los Arcos), and well documented as a
playground for the jet set, Los Cabos resorts now offer more moderately priced
all-inclusives for the not so rich and famous.
For families and big groups, Dreams Los Cabos is the spot, while for an upscale,
adult-only experience, Secrets Marquis resort has stunning vistas and celebrity
guests like George Clooney.
If you can really afford to wed in VIP style, Esperanza is the chic and exclusive
escape, having hosted none other than U.S. President Barack Obama.

Curacao
TOP 10
TROPICAL WEDDING DESTINATIONS
10. Curacao
Home of the famous blue liqueur and known for its candy-coloured waterfront
buildings, Curacao is full of culture, history and idyllic beaches. Sunscape Resort
is a lively all-inclusive for families and groups, and Santa Barbara Resort is
cosmopolitan on its own private beach.
For luxury, downtown Sandton Kura Hulanda Resort is incredibly unique, and its
sister resort Kura Hulanda Lodge has one of the world’s only tree-house mansions.
Both were recently featured on The Bachelorette.

Looking for the caterer for your
wedding is an important part of
planning your very special day. We
have a few tips for finding the right
match to ensure that your big event
is just right:
Scope the landscape. Talk to
friends and acquaintances who’ve
recently gotten married or attended
weddings that they enjoyed and
learn about which caterers they remember. If they don’t remember
caterers’ names, you can ask them
about the event itself and what
made it stand out.
Look online at ratings and reviews.
Visit places like www.urbanspoon.
com and other online resources to
see what caterers receive the best
reviews.
Find the right fit for your budget.
Identify your event budget and
make preliminary calls to about
4-5 caterers to see whether their
prices will fit with your event. If you
are able to tell a catering company
how many guests you expect and
whether you prefer seated, buffet,
or serving stations, you’ll get the
best idea of their prices.
Ask a lot of questions. When you
meet with catering companies, ask
about their menus, what their approach is to working on weddings,
the latest trends or ideas they will
bring to your event, and anything
else you want to know.
Utilize referrals. Be sure that you
ask the catering companies you interview to provide you with at least
3-4 recent wedding client referrals
who had budgets similar to yours.
Follow up with those referrals and
ask them about their experiences
and whether they’d recommend
this particular catering company
and why.
Finally, go with your gut – literally and figuratively. Be sure that you
get to taste food by any potential
catering company. You can ask for
samples at a first or second meeting.
Be sure to ask if you would be able
to talk with the chef to get a feel for
his/her style. And, be sure that you
are comfortable with your decision
to work with a particular catering
company.
We hope these steps will lead you
to the right decision for your most
special day!. AWP

HOW TO FIND THE PERFECT DIAMOND RING
P L ANNE R
1. Do your homework.
You may want to know how diamonds are priced, i.e. the 4 Cs, Light
Behavior, and Cut Grade. Consider
the material the solitaire engagement rings can be made of, as for
different diamonds there can be a
wide range of materials used. Make
sure you know these things and
it will make your life easier when
discussing the price with a jeweler.
2. Check your budget.
The most important thing in buying a diamond ring is to find a sufficient amount of money. There is
a belief that the solitaire engagement rings should cost not lower
than two average monthly salaries.
3. Have an idea of what she
likes. It’s an expensive purchase,
so you want to make sure she loves
it. Classic setting? Pave? Diamond
Shape? All good things to know.
Would you prefer a classic diamond
ring like a solitaire, or a diamond
eternity band? Or would you like
to have something more modern?
Many options are available even in
solitaires. Diamond ring is something you are going to wear for
the rest of your life, so make sure
the style reflects your personality.
162 | AlbertaWeddingsPlanner.com
4. Focus on the design.
It’s a vital part of the purchase.
See the 4Cs on page 162.
5. Check the diamond certification. Before purchasing, check if
the diamonds are certified or not.
Some of the most accurate/popular diamond grading labs include
Precision Gem Grading Laboratory
(PGGL), Gemological Institute of
America (GIA), European Gemological Laboratory (EGL), and International Gemological Institute (IGI).
6. Get an appraisal.
Getting a second opinion on your
diamond ring may be essential.
7. Matching Wedding Bands.
A great way to show your love is by
purchasing a diamond engagement
ring with matching wedding bands.
Buying a wedding band along with
the engagement ring will show your
commitment and dedication to go
through the marriage. You may
think that it is not important, but for
your lover it will be everything. Purchasing a set is a good idea because
you can save money also. AWP

The darkness of mehndi depends on your body temperature. The
warmer you are the darker the mehndi colour comes out on the skin.
5
6
7
8
Once mehndi is applied on the skin, it should be left overnight or for at
least 5-6 hours to enhance the darkness in colour.
The colour on the skin will darken the day after the mehndi has been
applied. The darkness in colour will last for a few days and fade away.
The mehndi powder can be a khaki green or dark brown colour,
depending on where it comes from. It’s usually a chocolate brown colour
when applied as a paste onto the skin. Fresh mehndi powder will
produce a strong dark brown colour and will last longer. Stale mehndi
will produce a light orange colour, which will not get darker over time.
Lemon Juice & sugar syrup can be applied with cotton wool on to the
mehndi once it is dried. This will secure the mehndi onto the skin and
therefore, result in the darkness of the colour on the skin.

The use of black “henna” should be avoided as it contains a dangerous
chemical called Para-phenylenediamine (PPD) found in hair dyes which
causes skin irritations.
Brides should have waxing done before mehndi is applied on them as
otherwise the mehndi will be waxed off with the hair!
To beautify your mehndi for mehndi nights, wedding or receptions, body
glitter and gems in different colours can be applied on the skin to match
the outfits. AWP

Once you have short listed, let’s say 3 photographers,
prepare an e-mail with the below details
of your wedding and questions:
• Wedding date (it is critical to know if his/her team is available on your wedding
day), otherwise, there is no point in pursuing discussions.
• Are you a full time wedding photographer?
• Do you have back-up equipment for your camera and lenses in case of
• equipment failure?
• What is your turn around time in delivering the pictures?
• Do you provide hi-resolution images without watermark, or do we need to pay
extra?
• Do you offer wedding albums - if so, who is your supplier? (some photographers
will throw in a “leather album” and make it sound luxurious... while they have
them printed at Costco! You deserve quality for your investment....
• Do you work with an assistant?
• Can you provide a blank copy of your contract? (some photographers still do
not sign contracts, and this can cause some headaches when a problem occurs,
just read it over and ensure you are comfortable with what he/she is proposing)
• Do you have back-up disks for storing our pictures, if so for how long? (some will
keep files for 1yr, 2yrs, etc.) If you want to order a large print in a year after the
wedding, you want to make sure your photographer hasn’t purged his/her disks)
“The Hoot Booth is a fresh, updated version of the traditional
photo booth”
You can fit 10 people or more.
It’s a great way to have hundreds
of fun photos of your guests!

information.

This will certainly allow you to determine who’s really fit to cover
your wedding. Remember that your wedding is not like any other
photo shoot, you can not come back and re-shoot it. The day unfolds as it’s meant to be and you need a solid photographer to
document it from start to finish. AWP
