WELCOME MESSAGE FROM THE SYMPOSIUM CHAIR
Dear friends and colleagues,
I have the great pleasure of inviting you, on behalf of the Local Organising Committee and Local Scientific
Committee, to attend the 9th EADV Spring Symposium held in Verona, Italy from 6-10 June, 2012.
One may walk the streets of Verona and marvel at its impressive richness of culture, history, and architecture,
for which Verona has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Arena, the Roman Theatre, Ponte
Pietra (stone bridge), and two Roman gates evoke the city’s prominence during the days of the Roman Empire.
Beginning in Roman times and continuing until the present, the city’s symphony of high quality art and
architecture showcase the best styles from successive historic periods created by artistic geniuses such as
Pisanello, Mantegna, Titian, and Veronese. Even in modern times opera lovers come to the Arena to experience
the most famous works of Verdi, Puccini and Rossini presented by the best in the field.
Similar to an opera, dermatology combines a variety of different medical and surgical elements which must
play in a harmonised way in order to achieve an effective final result. Inspired by this, the 9th EADV Spring
Symposium will run under the logo “A Dermatological Opera”.
Verona has always been an inspiration to great minds and a meeting place of excellence continually attracting the best of the best, which make it, without doubt, the perfect location to house the 9th EADV Spring
Symposium.

WELCOME MESSAGE FROM THE EADV PRESIDENT
History, Culture, Music and the EADV!
Dear friends and colleagues,
As President of the EADV it is my great pleasure to invite you to join us at the 9 th Spring Symposium in Verona!
Italy was one of the founding countries of the EADV and Italian dermatology has always featured prominently
in our activities. The EADV has held two major congresses in Florence which were very successful. Now we
move from the region of Tuscany to the Veneto region and the town of Verona for the 9th Spring Symposium
in June 2012.
Verona is a wonderful town, rich in history, culture and music. It still retains its personality as a market town
with a vibrant living centre. Piazza Bra houses the magnificant Roman amphitheatre built more than 2000
years ago and now famous for its open air operas. Up to 25,000 people can sit under the stars enthralled with
the music and artistry of Verdi and other composers, a truly wonderful experience. Dante, the medieval poet
spent time in Verona and his statue looks down on Piazza dei Signori close to Piazza Erbe which is lined by
art galleries, up-market boutiques and pavement cafes. The house where Romeo is reputed to have climbed
to Juliet’s balcony is close by in Via Capello.
All of these aspects of Verona provide an appealing environment in which a fine scientific meeting will be
hosted by Symposium Chairman Professor Girolomoni and his colleagues. An excellent programme has been
designed by the Scientific Committee with state of the art lectures and updates on the most important topics
in dermatology and venerology.
Every year many people come to Verona for the history, culture and music. We are indeed fortunate that we
have an additional reason of an attractive EADV Spring Symposium to bring us to this wonderful town!
I hope to see you there!

THE ACADEMY
Founded in 1987, the EADV is a non-profit making association whose mission is to advance excellence in
clinical care, research, education and training in the fields of dermatology and venereology and to act as the
advocate and educator of patients particularly those with cutaneous or venereal diseases.
How to Become a Member
Membership is open to all dermatologists and venereologists as well as scientists working in these fields and
trainees in dermatology. In addition other health care professionals with an interest in dermatovenereology
may also be eligible for membership. EADV membership includes the subscription to the Journal of the
European Academy of Dermatology & Venereology (JEADV) and substantial discounts to attend all EADV
Annual Congresses and Spring Symposia. Each member will receive the EADV newsletter, and a membership
access only to the EADV website. Please contact the EADV membership department or consult the
website www.eadv.org for details.
Continuing Medical Education (CME- CPD)
The 9th EADV Spring Symposium will have European accreditation awarded by the UEMS/EACCME in
Brussels. UEMS accreditation includes a charter with the American Medical Association.
The EADV offers individual CME-CPD participation through the scanning of the bar code on the registration
badge. Hostesses will scan the badge as participants pass through the entrance of each session hall.
Participants will be required to scan their badge at the entrance for a few seconds.
A minimum attendance of half of the session is required to qualify for CME-CPD accreditation of that
session and each participant will be accredited only with the actual hours spent in sessions as recorded by
the scanning process. Participants will be logged out of the session when scanning their registration badge
as they leave the session hall.
A speaker/session evaluation form will be available as you enter each session hall and should be completed
and deposited with the hostesses when you leave. The form is only available at the time of the session.
Evaluation data is essential to our statistics and is of considerable help in the choice of future topics and
speakers. Your feedback and comments are greatly appreciated.
Personal evaluation data, collected from the completed evaluation forms, will be automatically sent to the
speakers. All data is treated confidentially and is generally available several months after the event. It is also
envisaged to publish the top ten sessions in the EADV News.
CME certificates will be available to download for a period of one year from www.eadvverona2012.org for
processing with the national authority in your country of practice.
You are encouraged to pass by the CME-CPD booth located near the Registration desk if you have any
questions.

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS
The Scientific Committee invites authors to submit their abstracts for consideration and inclusion in the
programme. Please note that only ELECTRONIC submission will be accepted.
Faxed or mailed abstracts will not be reviewed.
All abstracts should be submitted in English online through the Spring Symposium website:
www.eadvverona2012.org
Deadline for Abstract Submission: 23 January, 2012
Preparation of your Abstract
• Abstracts must be submitted in English
• A “blind” selection process will be used. No identifying features such as names of hospitals, medical
schools, clinics or cities may be listed in the title or text of the abstract.
Do not include the names of authors either. The names of authors and their affiliations (institutions) will
be registered separately when submitting the abstract on line.
• The material in the abstract must be original and not previously published
• The title should be as brief as possible but long enough to clearly indicate the nature of the study.
Abbreviations must not be used in the title
• The size of the abstract is limited to 3.000 characters (this includes title, body of abstract, spaces, tables
and graphics). The submission programme will automatically calculate the size of your abstract and will
not allow submissions that do not fit in the size requirements. Each section (Introduction & Objectives,
Materials & Methods, Results, and Conclusions) should be inserted in the individually labelled boxes.
• You can use the special keys to insert tables, pictures or specific characters.
• Structure your abstract using the following subheadings:
- Introduction & Objectives: a sentence describing the purpose of the study
- Materials & Methods: describe your selection of observations or experimental subjects precisely
- Results: describe your results in a logical sequence
- Conclusions: emphasise new and important aspects of the study and conclusions that are drawn
from them.
• Check spelling and grammar carefully. Direct reproduction of your electronically submitted abstract text
means that any errors in spelling, grammar or scientific data will be reproduced as submitted.
• Use generic names. Commercial drug names may not be used

About Verona
Verona: a first glimpse of the city is love at first sight. For the past two thousand years and more, the city walls
enclose a unique and breathtaking range of art-works and monuments. Recently awarded the status of a
“World Heritage Site”, Verona has delighted painters, poets, travellers and celebrities for centuries. It is a work of art in itself: a fascinating cross-road of historical periods and cultures (both classical and
Germanic), a blend of both Nordic and “Mediterranean” influences; the city is at the same time both ancient
and modern. A walk through its narrow streets allows you to get in touch with its varied and fascinating past: traces of its
splendid Roman origins, its prevailing medieval structure dating back to the time of knights and castles, its
magnificent Renaissance palaces as well as the impressive fortifications which protect it. The monument that
symbolises the town is the Arena, the roman amphitheatre built in the 1st century BC. 2000 years later and it
is still standing strong. Since 1913 the Arena has become the most important open air lyrical theatre in the
world, with the largest stage that hosts magnificent representations in summer. Maria Callas’ debut was in
Verona and singers like Pavarotti and Domingo have also performed there.
What about love? “There is no world without Verona walls”: the pen of William Shakespeare has lent Verona
fame and immortality with his tale of two star-crossed lovers, Romeo Montecchi and Juliet Capuleti. Verona
has become the town of romanticism especially on Valentine’s day when the “Verona in Love” event, dedicated
to the theme of love, takes place. If you love someone take your beloved to Verona.
And more: the hinterland of Verona is enchanting and embraces high mountains (Monte Baldo and the
Pre-Alps), sweet hills (Valpolicella world renown for its vineyards and wine and Lessinia), plains (the south-east
lowlands where rice has been produced since the 17th century) and Lake Garda, the largest lake in Italy, with
its beautiful small villages spread along its shores and the production of wine, olive oil and lemons.
Nowadays Verona is characterised as a modern centre for economy and commerce: with 260,000 inhabitants
it is the second largest town in the Veneto Region, after Venice. Located at the intersection of great communication arteries connecting Eastern Europe to the Mediterranean, and to Western Europe, Verona is a lively,
dynamic town in which culture and economy, old and new, efficiency and kindness harmoniously melt together.
Language
The official language in Italy is standard Italian, a descendant of the Tuscan dialect and a direct descendant
of Latin (some 75% of Italian words are of Latin origin). The Tuscan dialect spoken in Tuscany was promoted
as the standard in large part due to its literary heritage.
Currency
Since 1 January, 2002 Euro is the official currency.
Foreign currencies can be exchanged in all banks and foreign exchange offices.
