Hockey fans were seeing pink
Jan. 21 as the West Lome Comets
played "The Pink Game• in support
of the Canadian Breast Cancer
Society.
The Comets Atom House League
played against the Ridgetown
Rebels at die West Elgin Arena The
Comets tnmed the game into a fundra_\sing event by dressing in pink,
including pink-tapped hockey
sticks and pink laces, and collecting funds to go towards the Breast
Cancer Society. The team raised
$500 by the end of the game, and
they beat Ridgetown 6-1.
"The kids had a great game,• said
Comets Coach Gerry Lamb. "The
kids passed well and they played
well...
The Comets arranged the pink
laces and pink tape on their hockey
sticks themselves, but the pink
hockey jerseys came to them as a
surprise. The jerseys were sponsored in part by Source for Sports,
London, and the coaches and team
manager surprised the team with
them just before the game.
"They just saw them tonight for
the first time. They were ecstatic.
I've never seen boys so excited over
pink clothes,• said Linda Long,
team manager.
The Pink Game fundraising event
was first proposed by team member Jacob McQuade.
"I think it's cool that Jacob
McQuade got the boys involved in
supporting breast cancer,• said
Julie Pemberton. Pemberton's son.
nine-year-old Riley Pemberton of
Dutton, also plays on the team.
Riley Pemberton's aunt and
great aunt are also recovering from
breast cancer.
"It helped Riley realize what was
going on with his aunt and great
aunt," said Pemberton.

The Chronicle
The West Lome Comets will be going pink to fight breast
cancer tomorrow.
On Jan. 21, the West Lome Comets Atom House League
will be playing against the Ridgetown team at the West Elgin
Arena, starting at 7:00p.m.
The Comets are calling this "The Pink Gam e" because
they'll be decorated in pink in support of the Breast Cancer
Society of Canada
'J\11 season they have been having their sticks taped pink,
and their laces, that kind of thing, all in pink," said Linda
Long, team manager.
All during the game, members of the Comets and their
family members will be canvassing the crowd, collecting
funds to be donated to the Breast Cancer Society.
"I'm hoping we have good attendance and that we're able
to raise some money to donate to breast cancer:' said Long.
Long said that the idea for The Pink Game started with
Jacob McQuade, one of the Comets. After that, all the other
players "jumped on board very quickly':

School skate is loads of fun!
Tara lopes' grade 4/5 class of St Mary's Catholic School has been enjoying a sixweek Instructional Skating Program offered, free of charge, to all grade 5 students
within the London District Catholic School Board. The students walk to West Elgin
Arena once a week and receive group instruction from former St Mary's graduates
and current WESS students, Julian Kovacs, Bo Horvat and Jason Alves. The students
are grouped according to ability and benefit from a small group setting with their
peers. This program has turned into one of the highlights of the grade 5 year!

An evening of Christmas music was held Dec. 11 at West Bgin Secondary School.
Music was provided by vocal group Full Circle, Mary Anne Smith (l), Esther Trtus

Kiwanis plans
on Key Club

..
west Lome Kiwanis Club
will be getting started on a Key
Club at West Elgin Secondary
School (WFSS) this month.
Key Club International is a
high school organization
sponsored by Kiwanis
International. Members of
Key Clubs work to support
their community through
activities such as cleaning up
parks, collecting clo~gand
organizing food dnves, and
they also learn leadership
skills by running meetin~s,
planning projects and holding
elected leadership positions
attheclub.
.
"It's a way for the students·
to support the school and
their community through vol·
unteer hours," said Sylvia
Logan, who will be the club's
Kiwanis Advisor.
Logan has been a Kiwanis
member for 21 years. She
started at the Rodney Club,
but switched to the West
Lome club after she moved.
Starting a Key Club at the
hlgh school may help infuse
the West Lome Kiwanis Club
with a younger generation.
"Rodney does alright at getting younger members into
Kiwanis, but in West Lome
our members are old. Bob
[Logan] is our youngest member and he's 65; said Logan.
"They realize that over the
years, the membership in
Kiwanis is falling, partly
because of age. They know
that the only way you're going
to g~t new Kiwanians in ~e
future is to get the ktds
involved:"
Logan will apply for a charter this month to get the Key
Club started.
"We're still looking for
members, because we need
15 members to charter and
we're not quite there yet;'
said Logan, who counted
their Key Club members at 12
so far.
