Autism Awareness
Autism Awareness Month, celebrated
every year in April, provides an opportunity for
families, friends, and local communities to raise
public awareness about autism. It is sponsored
by the Autism Society of America (ASA).
Individuals and communities can get involved
by participating in activities sponsored by their
local ASA chapter or by promoting services.
According to the CDC, 1 in 88 children
born in the United States has Autism Spectrum
Disorder (2012). ASA explains, “As with cancer,
diabetes, and heart disease, early diagnosis
and treatment are essential to ensuring a
better quality of life for individuals with autism.
However early diagnosis and treatment can only
occur with increased awareness.” Every April,
the ASA sponsors “National Autism Awareness
Month” to share its message of hope to the
millions of families affected by autism, and to
heighten public awareness.
Autism is a complex developmental
disorder that affects language and social
behavior. It is known as a “spectrum disorder,”
which means it shows itself differently in each
person and with varying degrees of intensity.
For parents of young children, learning about
this increasingly prevalent disorder could have
an enormous positive impact if your child shows
signs of autism and is evaluated early. And even
if your family has not been directly affected
by it, autism is now a part of classrooms and
communities around the country.
Educators, parents, and community
members can play a huge part in turning
misconceptions and fears about autism into
understanding and support for autistic children
and adults and their families.
