Holding that steering wheel and holding that rifle both mean you better be responsible." -- Dale Earnhardt 3 Chairman’s Chatter Well after last weekend, we have three new champions and eagerly await the results of the final round of the other two categories. Mike Altona was confirmed as the Sports & GT Champion in September while Jannie van Rooyen managed to win on Saturday to claim the Touring Car Championship and Wayne Odendaal won the Modified Saloon Championship. To all of you, well done. On Saturday it was very interesting to talk to all the guys who were in line to win the Championship as there was a lot of nervousness related to the two races that were to be run. Our prize giving is in November so please speak to Tracy to get tickets as we need to have as many members and friends as possible attend the event. With the club’s website currently getting over 90000 page hits per month, it certainly is one of our treasures and needs to be promoted as much as possible. Tracy has stickers www.historicracing.co.z a for your race and/or road car. Please use them and promote the club. The Technical Rules for 2009 have now been published for about a month and although there have been a couple of objections, by and large the support for the changes has been positive. The Historic Commission is currently working on the rules for 2010 which hopefully will be completed by the end of the year. The Nine Hour is coming up in November so get your cars ready for the day. The programme, I believe, caters for everyone so the day promises to be a great success. The racing calendar for 2009 is in the final throes of manipulation and should be available shortly. As soon as it is available, it will be posted on the website for your perusal. Next year sees all the categories racing together most times but it is not possible to achieve that every time. The spread of races is good and most of the away races are early in the year. Alan Kernick, the Northern Regions Racing sub committee Chairman, has worked very hard to please everyone and has produced a good compromise for all stakeholders. Well done Alan and please keep up the good work. One of the club’s strength is the fact that we all enjoy Historic Racing but we don’t seem to arrange or organise social events. What are your feelings on this? If you have any ideas please let me know and we will see what can be done. Until next month, enjoy the marvelous weather we are having but please let’s have a little rain, only a little, not like Cape Town. John Reidy 4 The Historic Times Page 4 Automate Tourers Zwarties Semi Final Unbiased, personally opiniated text, etc by Harry Lombard. As luck would have it, at a time when one needs something or some-one badly it never materializes. I organized myself a “ground engineer” for the week-end before the race as I needed to put down some top soil and put down a cement piece under my carport. I had actually made a shortlist of what needed to be done. Murphy’s Law dictated that said person never pitched. By 0930 I had 5 cube meters off topsoil on my inner front lawn and only myself and a wheel barrow and spade. Deciding that I needed the exercise anyway, I opted to work at a pace comfortable to myself and duly spread the whole lot over my yard and pavement. My neighbour Luis has a family friend that I know quite well and I think he must have seen this oke struggling out on the pavement, bent over the barrow and raking like crazy. He stopped his vehicle close to me and we had a chat about how the racing was going and when I told him that I had the car in the market, told me that he would give me some sponsorship starting from this particular week-end and for a year on. I made sure that he was around the corner before I did my “jig” and ALI shuffle to celebrate this. Heck the whole job seemed a lot easier although I could feel it by the time it came to pack up tools at 6 that night. A.T.S used to have sales of tyres and equipment many years ago at the end of every season and I had bought some Dunlop tyres about 7 or 8 years ago that I kept in my spare room at home. These along with a spare Conti were duly fitted to some rims in preparation for this race. The Wednesday 24th being a holiday, I took Thursday and Friday as well to enable me to get as far as possible with my list and to go and scrub my “new” tyres. On Friday I did the scrubbing, scrutineering et al and found that I was just over a second quicker around Z as I could take turn 1 much faster and the sweep as well. I hung around for a while and was surprised that for a change there were not that many people coming out to practice. Wimpie found that his Scirocco was going slower as practice went and discovered some oil dripping out of the overflow bottle and Jannie diagnosing it as a possible broken ring. Annie himself only did a few laps before parking the car, covering it and leaving for home. Divov came out quite late and found that his car was handling up to no good and played with the tyres pressures after some consultation with Nortman about pressures. Van Vuuren also found his car not up to scratch and a broken crank was discovered. The ride home was fairly slow with an accident close to Tembisa that had the traffic crawling in first gear at times. My new stickers were given to me that evening at home, which were fitted first thing the next morning. As our qualifying was only late in the morning, I took a leisurely drive out to the circuit enjoying some good music and jurst checksing out da scenery. Fortunately the A to D field was combined with Trans –Am cars and we had Cavalieri out in the makulu ex- Vianna BMW and Boet Gouws in his repaired Can-am as well as newcomers father and son Barbolini team with a Can-am as well. All in 17 cars qualified with Pienaar on pole with his Camaro followed by Cavalieri i n B MW , Mo r g e n r o o d Mustang, Jannie van Rooyen and Geoff PattersonSciroccos, Jonathan du Toit, Camaro, Densham with his race all races Alfa, Patterson snr-Scirocco, Sanne-2002, Gouws, Can-Am, WettonContinued on page 14 5 Reply from the Pre 84 Chairman to Bob Osborn’s August comments/gripes It would be nice to run the cars in their own heats; however I have a register of 32 cars and only commitment from three people. Brian Evans tried to get these cars on the track many years ago and it failed. These original cars are more genuine in terms of body and colour than the current cars running in “touring cars” , yes engine size is free but there is a limit on the V8`s. Bob are people upset that a Golf is giving the class a driving lesson? I asked the committee a year or so ago if we could put these cars in their own heat, by this I mean put pre 84 cars in class F to G and move class E. That meant classes A to E would run together, this was shot down big time. I then spoke to Peter Du Toit about what I wanted to do, I quote, “I must be getting old, these cars are not historic.” A couple of race meetings later I saw the Trans Am in the place of class E. All I wanted to do is give this class some exposure so that it might attract more cars. Just to give you an idea of the cars that can start their engines and race NISSAN SKYLINE, NISSAN SENTRA, NISSAN EXA, BMW735, GOLF1 X2 CARS, FORD ESCORT (X4 CARS), FIAT UNO, MAZDA 323 (X2 CARS), ROVER, JUMBO GOLF. Never mind the rest of the list of real race cars that are lying around in the rest of South Africa and the cars going to waste in Zimbabwe and Mozambique. The reason I started with the register was to prevent these cars from either losing them to overseas buyers like Larry Wilfred’s Audi Quattro which is in America, I won’t even talk about the original cars that have been chopped up and destroyed for hotrod’s (oval track racing and not touring cars) The class was to cater for group one, Group N (A and B cars), ex WesBank cars (up to pre space frame cars) Instead of shooting a concept down, talk to the right people and it will be explained! I don’t think Danny Kl oes in the Alfa has etorius ing. He’s not spectacular out there but he’s very smooth and manages to win virtually every time he races. This takes huge effort and concentration. He’s really good at it. He won both heats with no real fuss at all. Congrats Danny! In the first heat Danny was followed by Wi lli e G r obler who did NOT break out – so there! Probably all of the teams have been working hard on the new rule defining the KERS—Kinetic – Energy Recovery Systems, scheduled for introduction on next year’s cars. This has resulted in some unusual problems; Red Bull Racing has to call in the local Fire Brigade when their experimental KERS system failed and caught fire resulting in lots of smoke and fumes. Worse still – BMW Sauber were testing at the Spanish Jerez circuit and on returning to the pits, as the first mehttp://www.autoracingdaily.com/news/indycar-series/for-helio-castroneves- Non-legal people ( such as me ) are still a little puzzled that Max Mosley won his case and more so that he had the majority of the FIA back him and avoid being thrown out.. It’s a funny old world which does not make sense where ethics and old fashioned morals are concerned. Fortunately after a night in hospital he was able to return to work the next day—fully charged up. It could be that KERS is going to be put on the shelf for a while. It looks if Kiwi Scott Dixon has all but sewn up the Indy Car Series Championship, he won his 5th of the season at Edmonton Canada in a race plagued by crashes and ill-judged moves Helio ‘Dancer’ Castroneves Continued on page 13 Continued on page 12 9 Page 9 10 Barnstorming finish at Kyalami Page 10 van Rooyen crowned Champ The delightful rasp bellow of the big black Batmobile leading the train of historic racing cars down the mineshaft of the famous Kyalami circuit was a sound too delightful to the petrolheads of days long gone. It is a pity ‘though that it fairly romped away at the front of the field. in lap 4 it already stated meeting backmarkers! Of keen interest however was the gargantuan battle raging between the two VW Scriccos of Van Rooyen and Patterson’s son Geoff. Lap after blistering lap they dog-fought each other with no quarter asked and none given! It was a thouroughly exceptional display af racing at its very best. What spiced up the whole affaire of cource was the fact that both heats were msut wins for championship honours. Jannie took all the extreme pressure that young Geoff meted out and he and his Jagermeister liveried car came home champions for the 2008 season. In the eyes of the writer both drivers deserve the mantle of champion with the display of exceptional skill and control and all this under tremendous pressure. Well done to both of you. Theo in the Datty was fairly and squarely beaten by the silver Scirrocco of Wimpie in the kink, no bother he just rearranged the mini cones and went straight through to turn ten. “Hmmmm, that was easy!” Martin Botha found the kink quite a challenge with considerable understeer problems. An interesting dice developed also between the two Escotrs of Wrong way Mae and Joe Sores and into this fray came the massive Robert’s Merc. It was fantastic to see the two slug it out time after time into and out of the dreaded kink. At one stage in sheer desperation Wrong way Mae took to the dirt on the outside between the kink and the start finish straight to pass the blue Escort of her tormentor but she just ran out of space. Later the Roberts Merc passed both of them as they were being lapped by the Batmobile. This move by Uli in the BMW taking a squabbling bunch of two Escies and a Merc was a spectacular and brave affaire that left many hearts in mouths for the duration of the overtake, even the stand full of spectators held their collective breaths. Maybe when Joe lost out to the Wrong way Mae and the Merc in the kink he should have tried the Theo Datsun trick to regain lost ground. Meanwhile in the middle of the E Classers Low profile Pat and Martin Radel were forever together for the last four laps of the race. Martin upfront with Pat snapping at his rear fenders in each and every corner. The misfiring Escort jinking left, snapping right in desperate efforts to put the bug behind him but to no avail. It was interesting the see how their respective lines into the kink changed from lap to lap, always in total concert, with Pat at one stage having to take to the dirt to avoid banging. Two more who certainly got their money’s worth for the day, not to mention the spectators who loved every minute of the duel. Of particular note was the fact that Martin fell quite far back from the Low Profile Escort on the cool Continued on page 18 11 12 TERRY’S TRIVIA which eliminated his main rivals. Champion dancer who has finished second in many races this with no wins screwed up his footwork and spun when attempting a late passing move on Dixon but managed to save 2nd place. British ex-F1 driver and two times Champ Series title runner up, Justin Wilson finally made it to the podium for the third spot. Mario Andretti ignored team orders to let team mate Tony Kanaan pass and then shunted team mate Danica Patrick, stalling her for a few laps. Rahal was smashed out – Kanaan led for 9 laps but spun out, Carpenter bumped and almost took out polesitter Ryan Briscoe and Dan Weldon –who also, with Dixon has a career total of 15 Indy Series wins was also shunted but finished 7th. But Dixon sailed serenely along winning by almost 6 seconds and stretching his championship lead to 65 seconds. Some really nice news is that Cristiano Da Matta,,former F1 and Cart 2002 champ, who was nearly killed when a deer ran in front of his Champ car during testing at Road America in August http://www.paddocktalk.com/news/html/modules.php? 2006 where it was feared that he would not even wake up but would probably sufferer brain damage. It was not even discussed whether or not he would ever drive a racing car again but almost miraculously he has made a wonderful recovery and was able partner Jimmy Vasser in a Daytona Prototype at Luguna Seca Raceway where sadly they had to retire after briefly leading but at least he is back and hungry to drive again. Team A1 Italy may be wishing wistfully in hoping that Valentino Rossi will race their car in the 2008/2009 season . Rossi was very impressive when testing a F1 Ferrarri and now that the cars are virtually Fazzazza clones the Team Italy bossformer F1 driver – Pier- carlo Chinzani, claims to have made positive contact with his close friend Rossi and is optimistic “It would be a fantastic situation to have him” however Yamaha may feel different about this as it would probably interfere with the winter testing program. Finally it appears that FIA is serious about reviving the Formula Two series as a “Arrive and Drive” operation The FIA is calling for quotations for the exclusive contract to supply F2 cars from 2009 to 2011, they are hoping to arrive at a figure of about 300000 dollars for a driver to contest a season . As a comparison , GP2 costs a cool million dollars per car each season . As soon as the pace car pulled off, they were basically racing flat out down the hill and around into the pit straight. They went past the lights with the lights still on and the normal touring cars backing off for the restart that never happened. After one and a half laps Mark in the red Camaro pulled off at the table top and 2 laps later Jonathan retired the other Camaro. Morgenrood, Pienaar and Cavalieri got into their own dice as did Jannie and Geoff; the two VW’s initially mixing it between the V8’s. As the day got hotter so did the dices with Sanne, Patterson snr and Densham duking it out until Sanne got some breathing space and setting off after Jannie and Geoff. Divov got into an almighty scrap with Densham after Wetton in the Rattax outbraked himself into the pit straight and almost taking out Divov. The Alfa and the Scirocco came down the hill at times close to the fence there being such a defensive drive going on. Mc Caw had Theo pushing him and Doc G pushing to stay with them. On lap 6 ½ at the table top Ben tried a huge outbraking manoeuvre on the big BMW ,but ran out of talent and spun the Mustang into the tire wall luckily without much damage to the car although not the same could be said about the ego. Patterson did a few outbraking efforts on Jannie into the pit straight, only to be retaken again. The final result was Pienaar from Cavalieri, Jannie, Geoff, Sanne, Patterson snr, Densham, Divov, Mc Caw, Theo, Doc G, Morgenrood and Wetton being credited with 5 laps and the last finisher. The second A to D race again had the guys racing down the hill with the HRCR guys this time a little more prepared for this type of startlights off or not. Pienaar getting a surprise when the BMW at first got the better of him and Morgenrood getting stuck with them. Geoff this time around got a better run on Jannie, but it did not last too long. Morgenrood and Cavalieri were giving it all and Theo was on a mission to get the Datty as far forward as possible. The Datty eventually slowing with only 2nd and 5th gear left and Theo circulating just to get a finish. The BM eventually chucked the water pump belt and the motor got hot enough to spit out some lubricant especially at turn 2 according to a competitor or two with the resultant fluid causing Geoff a moment or two and he then lost space on Jannie. Patterson snr at first had Wetton chasing him and then Densham joined them. This caused Wetton to drive a bit more defensive, allowing Patterson snr some Continued on page 20 16 For What Its Worth– Marque Cars Handicap Zwartkops 29 September 2008 Alf a adding still further points to his tally. Bob Thom son managed 7 th overall in the MGB with Car lo de Ca str o in another B in 8 th . Fr i tz Koch in the Marcos was 9th with Ke ith va n th Hee rden in 10 place with the D-Type. Keith would have done better but he managed to use his mirror as a cornering aid coming into the straight f or the last time in heat 1. I was sitting on his tail and I could see his eyes in his mirror as he overcooked it and managed a monumental spin on the last corner going into the pit straight. No tears but he was passed by quite a few. In spite of my DNS in heat 2 due to a disintegrated clutch, I did manage an 11 th overall f ollowed by E ver t in the Porsche and our Rookie Peter McIldow ie in 13 th . Adr i a n S mi t in the Turbo and G raeme Reid in the Conny the Corsair were 14 th and 15 th with Graeme breaking out in heat 1. Re nzo was 16 th in his MGA with a DNS in heat 2. Last but seriously not least (you could NEVER say that about Justin), was J us ti n La dne r in the “1200” Datsun who is in trouble. He managed to punt Dave Pepper in the butt which should have meant that they both get yellow cards. Problem is that he admitted that it was his fault so only HE gets the card. In a way it’s sort of ….”W ell done Justin” for saying so – but you still have a yellow card! Terry Allan. 082 412 0371 Photography by Francois Pretorius 17 Disgraceful and downright dangerous! Rolling starts should be changed to terrible starts. At least that’s the opinion of the Historic Times editor. Forced to become a spectator for the last few meetings it is shocking to see what is actually happening on track. What piqued my interest in particular was the conduct of the drivers on the buildup to the rolling starts. Since I raced most of my time either at the back of the grid or on very good days in the middle the dreaded concertina effect was a very challenging matter to deal with. Having witnessed the diabolical start of the Zwartkops event on 4th October where Pineaar in his big Chevvy took over the mantle of pace car duties when the official pace car peeled off into the pits. Holding the car train up correctly until the 50 meter marker board before turn 8, then inexplicably a short burst of speed to the corner then braked down to snail pace again, only to roar off again to create the start of the race as the entire field was wondering what this fool was up to. Not only were his actions inconsiderate but there were also potentially lethal. For the benefit of Pineaar and any others who might become confused between what’s correct and what’s in their own selfish interests I will quote from the ‘White book’, (Mr. Pineaar, that is the book of rules that govern –or at least try to govern –our sport.) on the laid down procedure for a rolling start. “Prior to entering the last corner before exiting the circuit, the driver of the pace car will slow down to ensure the field closes up and will establish the pace at which the field must ap- proach the start line. This speed which should not exceed 100km/h, must be maintained until the start signal is given.” All those who are confused by the above Standing Supplementary Regulation should spend some time with Barry Scott who I am sure will gladly show you how a rolling start should take place. personally I believe the ruination of the rolling should be a punishable offence. Van Schalkwyk was having a dismal session with the rebuilt engine in the Alfa messing him around and Botha in the Datty had some binding brakes. Texeira retired after 4 laps –gremlin unknown to me. On lap 7 Parker outdid himself and all, touched the nose of Vonk’s car and put- “I just love these HRCR race days” breathing space.Doc G was trying to improve on his first lap times chasing down Mc Caw. The BM retired after 6 laps with a hot motor and Divov pulled in after 8 with no gears. The final result was Pienaar from Morgenrood followed by Jannie, Geoff, Sanne, Patterson snr, Wetton, Densham, Mc Caw, Doc G, Theo, Divov and Cavalieri. It was observed after this race the Datty of the clan having the gearbox changed in the scrutineering bay-this job so taped now that they can do it with their eyes closed. The first E to G race had Nortman pulling off on the warm-up lap when the head gasket blew and for the start the lights were on for a long time as well and all got away fairly cleanly. Going through turn 2 Scott in the Escort got a bit twitchy; understeering towards the outside and Lombard’s bug, but the bug stuck to its line and ran along the outside through turn 3 ting him into a spin, with the result of van Nieuwenhuizen collecting Vonk’s car in the rear. Vonk opted not to continue as he was scared of some unseen damage. Van Nieuwenhuizen’s car had the grill damaged and the radiator was pushed back at an angle. While Willem was leading his class he ran out of talent and spun the 131 at the sweep and it cost him dearly for position as did G junior who after his spin tried the hotfoot boogie and when trying to correct the car did an additional 360.Hey boet doughnuts are usually done AFTER the race and then normally by the winner I think. The final results being the Clan from Scott, Lombard, G jnr, Parker, Spluttering Low profile Lee, Warren, Radel, Kirk, Mike, Vos, Mae, Esterhuizen, Herman, Stephen, Soares, Ladner, van Nieuwenhuizen, Kevin, Willem, Roberts snr, Deon and last two classified finishers Vonk and Botha. Between the heats with plenty of time, there was a hive of activity at fault finding, with Deon the one of nonstarters as the car would not start or run properly. Also out was Ladner. Kevin found that the adjustment on his juice cable was a bit out and he was only getting half throttle. Pat adjusted the float levels on the Escort and Wentzel changed head gaskets and found a crack around one of the bolt holes holding the 21 Kyalami 30th August 2008 Automate Tourers head. For the second heat Parker was replaced by Danie as per their agreement in the Mazda who promptly spun the Mazda into the pit straight on the first lap causing some soiled undies behind him. The second heat start had again the lights on for a while with John getting away a bit too soon, resulting in a 30 second penalty for jumped start that was over ruled later. G junior ate some hot curry between heats and had the Alfa gong after John quickly and Lombard was chasing Scott. Going around the table top Lee put his car on the outside of Lombard, who gave him room going down the hill as to avoid the Escort doing some offroading. As mentioned, Danie spun the Mazda going into the pit straight, causing pandemonium and luckily without getting donged. Radel had Mike in the Merc hounding him and Warren ahead of them. As a few cars started a little back they had some work to do and Kevin moved forward as did Wentzel and Vonk. Herman decided that he wanted to get to the front of class F, but chucked it away somewhere along the line. Willem moved through the field and Vos found himself defending his lines from Stephen. Esterhuizen at first was pushing to stay in touch with Mae and Soares until he found Texeira hounding him. Kirk had the Reno spluttering around and Martin was still battling with the Datty. After his spin into the pit straight Danie decided he was going to get to the front the sooner the better and in the process spun the Mazda into the kitty litter at turn one. This resulted in the pace car coming out, which put paid to a lot of hard work for some and putting smiles on faces of others. Unfortunately Selwyn passed some-one under yellow and was later disqualified for this. Things like these do happen especially when you are in good scrap and I have done the same a time or two and have waved the other competitor past againmaybe it was a bit harsh I think. Meantime Saturday night AM, Wentzel got past Lombard and was chasing after Lee, the Escort pulling a lot better than before. Scott had his hands full to keep Lee behind him. On the last lap Lombard moered it all away going turn 2 when the butt stepped out and not enough power to pull it out this time with the Uno on his tail, luckily without touching. SH.T said the king and 10 thousand butts shone in the sun. The bug was in 1st gear very quickly, but just as Lombard was about to pull off, he saw Radel half losing it and realised that Radel would hit him on the door should he get going. Roberts jnr was on Radel’s tail and in the process passed the Beetle. In the process John points and G junior broke class. The final result was John from G junior, Scott, Lee, Nortman, Warren, Roberts jnr, Radel, Lombard, Vonk, Kevin, Willem, Vos, Stephen, Mae, Soares, Esterhuizen, Texeira, Herman, Kirk, Martin Botha and Danie. While at the prizegiving it was pointed out to me that the ruling of John jumping the start had been changed and I then got hold of him and we ran around to get the correct papers and eventually got the keys from Sonia. The prizegiving was abuzz with all the people having a nice kuier, the new Sports and Gt winners and placers being congratulated, tales being told and pleasantries being swopped. I took a nice slow mellow drive home ,being thankful that the car was still in one piece and also thinking about the last race of the season coming up the very next week-end. With the 9-hour around the corner, there are stories being told of preps being done, some people are looking for sponsors and some for codrives. The main bone of contention being funds of course. May the gods of fortune smile upon the main contenders and by the time we read this, the championship will be all but wrapped up. Altona takes the Championship. Mike Altona (Dart) is the 2008 Northern Regions Historic Sports and GT champion. With two wins in Class E for the day, he secured the 2008 title by 15 points from Evert Botha (Porsche) and third placed Clive Densham (Alfa). Last years champion, Stefan Puschavez (Porsche), was unable to race at Zwartkops due to other commitments and dropped to 5th place from second behind Nick Parrott (Porsche). Mike also won Class E overall as well as the Production Sports Car Category. A number of entrants did not make it at the last minute and 16 cars qualified after Francois Pretorius’ Porsche broke its gearbox on Friday. It was good to see Frank Klinkert (Cobra) back in action but after setting fastest time he suffered a massive engine failure which sidelined him for the rest of the Mike Altona taking the Kyalami bus stop day. Altona takes the Championship. fastest. take Class G. Race 1 was a flat out blast at the front between Nick Parrott and Russell Westusen. The Cobra driver led from the start but had a small off and had to chase Parrott hard to take the win and Class B by 0,2 secs. Chris Clarke took Class C after a Clive Densham chased him all the way. Evert Botha who has improved over the season and had his first outing in Class C spent a lot of time exploring the scenery from different angles but still managed third in class. Eddie Roux brought back his 928 Porsche after some rear wing modifications and had a good fourth place in C. Race 2 saw the same battles and the same class winners with Westusen taking the win again from Parrott by 0,042 sec this time. Sadly Bruce Pidwell (Dallara XI/9) only managed a lap while Terry Allan retired after the warm up lap as his engine maladies resurfaced. Adrian Smit was unable to start after he suffered compression problems. Class D saw Phillip Pantazis in the 240Z take a good win from Terry Allan and Dillon Miller (Klein Moer) while Mike Altona took Class E from Bruce Pidwell and Adrian Smit. Franco Resca had abandoned his MGB’s crossflow head and dropped to Class F where he took a good win from Rohann Theron (Alfetta GT). Bob Thomson battled with an intermittent misfire to So it is all over for 2008 but we still have the 9 Hour retro to come as a non championship event but in the meantime, I am sure all competitors and HRCR members will join me in congratulating Mike Altona on his championship victory.
