School Values - We want our children to be:
Respectful; Caring; Honest; Responsible; Creative; Successful
and to Persevere
A very warm welcome to week six.
Congratulations to our Spragg Banner team who brought home the Overall Points
trophy with 98 points, which is just awesome. Congratulations also to Cody
Ogle who won the District Champion Boy trophy. There was a nail biting Spragg
Banner relay race with our team just being pipped at the post to come in second.
There was fantastic parental support and all of the children did really, really well
and can be proud of their efforts. Our best result for a very long time.
Children who won places in the championship races were:
Kaleece Potts – Broughton – 2nd 50m championship; Kianee Vaoga 3rd – 50m
Freestyle; Tane Leatherby – 2nd 50m Breaststroke.
We had a surprise visit from Chester Borrows last Thursday. Chester visited all
of the classes and had a quick chat with the children. It was great that he was able
to make the time. He did comment on how well everyone was engaged with their
learning.
We wish Room 1 a great time at Vertical Horizons this week. The class leave on
Wednesday and will be back on Friday. I will spend the day with the children on
Wednesday.
Scooters at Lunchtime: We are having a trial of the children using their scooters
at lunchtime. ( Sorry no bikes ) Our expectations are that the children look out
for each other and that they do not share their scooter. Wearing shoes is also
pretty important –saves those toes!
Swimming Carnival: Championship race certificates will be presented to the
place getters at this Friday’s assembly. We hope you can make it along.
Lost Property: There is a huge amount of lost property. At last count there were
13 polo fleeces and lots of swimming gear. We do our best to reunite the clothing
with the owners but it is difficult when there are no names. If you get the chance
please go through the container. At the end of swimming any unclaimed towels,
underwear, we wash and keep here at school for emergencies.
Gala
Parents are doing a great job seeking support from local businesses for our Gala.
If you are able to help in any way please let us know and remember that Gala
meetings are held every Monday at 2.30 pm in the staffroom.
Every class is supporting the gala by either organising a new activity or
providing a raffle – these are noted in each class’s notes for the week.
As well as this we are running a class competition, to see which class gains the
most points for bringing in items that will contribute towards the quick fire
raffles. There will be a prize for the winning class.
Room 1: Bathroom/ laundry products; Room 2 & 8: Cans of fruit; Room 3:
Baked Beans / Spaghetti; Room 4: Baking ingredients; Room 5: Rice / Pasta;
Room 6: Snack Foods; Room 7: Biscuits / Crackers.
We now need helpers on the day. Can you cook a mean hot dog and chips? Can
you sell white elephant goods? Sell raffles? Cook a BBQ? If this sounds like you
please let us know. How about sharing the role with a friend so that you can split
the time?? Looking forward to hearing from you.

Camp
CAMP IS TOMORROW! We leave as close to 9am as possible. If there are any
questions please come and ask me at school. I will be here until 5:30pm.
A reminder to families of students in Room 1, you are welcome to pop out to
Vertical Horizon to visit. Students will be busy most of the time with activities
and need to stay with their group. Family are welcome to join in and encourage
students, but please be mindful that the activities are for Room 1 students to
participate in. If you are there during meal times, please bring your own food.
Room 1 students, please repack your bag tonight, double check the gear list. It is
going to rain! EVERYTHING needs to be labelled with your name!!!!
Remember to pack morning tea, lunch and a drink bottle in your day bag.
An adventure schedule is posted on the notice board, outside Room 1, with more
information about the events on at camp.
Room 1 will return to school 2:30-2:45 on Friday.
In class
Last week we dreamed about camp. There were images of stock cars, water beds,
fizzy drinks, sweets, farm animals, zoos, dinosaurs, hay barns, scooters, skate
parks and star wars events. Vivid imaginations Room 1, but I know we will enjoy
the real adventures ahead of us at camp.
Thank you for your support,
Helen Barrett
Room 2
Hi everyone,
Wow week six already. The time is flying! I hope everyone had a great long
weekend.
It was an exciting week last week with the Spragg Banner team competing and
Whero hosting the house event. Well done!
The gala is fast approaching. This year Room 2 are
providing a scratches raffle. Can each child please bring
in $2 to go towards this raffle. Thanks. For the school
grocery raffle, we are responsible for bringing a can of
fruit to contribute. These can be brought into the class
from now on.
This week in writing, we are focusing on using our alphabet and blend cards to
help us convey and sequence our ideas. We are also learning to vary my simple
and compound sentence beginnings.
Room Two would like to welcome Sonja Smith who will be the teacher working
in our room every Tuesday when I am out on my release day.
Have a great week,
Jessica
Room 3
Hi everyone,
I hope you all enjoyed your long weekend.
Our gala is coming up in a couple of weeks. Our class raffle is petrol
vouchers so I would really appreciate it if all students could bring $2
to go towards this. Also for the class challenge for the raffle our class
has been asked to bring spaghetti or baked beans, so if you are able to
help out with this it would be greatly appreciated. There is a prize for
the class who brings in the most. 
Last week for Maths Like a Pirate we created treasure chests. This week we start
revisiting some of the challenges we have already done to see if we can get better
results. For maths during the rest of the week the groups will be looking at
numbers to 20 and place value of numbers.
Last week we created our own Greedy Cat book, as well as writing descriptions
about Greedy Cat. Our descriptions of Greedy Cat will on the website later in the
week.
Our letter of the week is Jj.
Have a good week everyone,
Clarissa
Room 4
Hey everyone,
Firstly congratulations to all of the Spragg Banner competitors. To win the
point’s trophy and come second in the banner relay race is a fantastic
achievement. A special mention to Cody who was the district champion boy – a
massive accomplishment.
We are continuing to develop our descriptive writing. A particular focus with our
writing at the moment is to improve the impact through elaboration, descriptive
language and using the ‘show don’t tell’ technique.
In maths we are developing our understanding of decimal numbers while also
refining the addition and subtraction strategies we use.
In reading we are finishing our research projects on ANZAC. An aspect of the
project is that the students are only allowed to use technology to find some
pictures to use on their presented poster. The aim is to have these completed by
Thursday.
For our inquiry we have been creating storyboards for an Air New Zealand safety
video. Our next step is to take the key ideas from these to create a video.
We have another rippa session this Thursday with Jack, focussing on building
key rippa skills ahead of the upcoming tournament.
Finally we’d like to wish Room 1 all the very best for their camp later on in the
week.
As always if you have any concerns, questions or positives feel free to come and
see me 
Richard
Room 5
Hello everyone!
A short but busy week to herald the final half of term 1.
Congratulations to all our sensational swimmers who did such an amazing job of
representing our school at last week’s Spragg Banner competition.
This week’s sees Payton, Shakira, Daniel Bensley and Nekah representing our
school at Wednesdays Paralympics at Ramanui School. Good luck!
Room 1 is off to camp at Vertical Horizons on Wednesday as well. We know
they will have a fabulous time.
Thank you to the Room 4 and 1 students who organised Tuesday’s Fun Whero
slip ’n slide event. You guys did a great job. A special thank you to the Nelley
family who donated the silage wrap we used. And a shout out to Zahara-Li’s
parents who came to support it. I am sure Kowhai House is thrilled with all the
bonus points they got as a result.
As part of our descriptions we wrote super sentences to describe some of the
photos taken at our swim carnival two weeks ago. Please enjoy reading them in
this week’s Kids’ Corner section of the newsletter.
Room 5 will be hosting this week’s and next week’s assemblies. Congratulations
to Naiema Ross and Rylie Whitaker, who have been chosen to be the hosts for
this week. We will use our inquiry time this week to plan, practise and prepare
for it.
I have classroom release on Wednesday, so everyone will bring an independent
book home to read.
Have a great week
Liz 
Room 6
Hello everyone,
Well done to all the children who competed in Spragg Banner last week. What a
great result!
On Tuesday, Whero hosted their lunchtime house event. It was a well organised
event that was a lot of fun for everyone involved.
For our upcoming school Gala, Room 6 will be responsible for supplying snack
foods for the school grocery raffle. Can each child please bring a snack item for
this raffle. Many thanks. For our Room 6 class raffle this year, we will be
having a cash prize, could each child please bring along some money for this.
Our class wow words wall is developing with children creating a list that can be
referred back to at writing time. On Friday, children worked in groups to
describe an animal cut out they were given. Room 6’s descriptive vocabulary is
getting very creative!
Have a super week.
Pip
Room 7
Hello everyone,
Gala is fast approaching. Room 7 will be in charge of the Lucky Dips this year,
so I would like each student in the class to supply two items suitable for lucky
dips please. They can be for boys or girls. House points will be given for every
item that comes in for gala. Please note that because our class is in charge of
supplying, wrapping and selling the lucky dips on gala day, we will not have a
class raffle this year. Thank you in anticipation for sending in items for our lucky
dips.
We are also responsible for supplying the biscuits for the
grocery raffles. Can each student please bring in a packet of
biscuits or crackers. Thank you.
Kasilk and Jaylyn were our champion problem solvers last
Friday when we tried to find out how many pigs and ducks were in the paddock
if there were 11 animals and 28 legs. Well done you two!
Please can you check your student has their home learning book at school each
day, as last week there were 5-6 students every day without these. It is really
important they are at school every day, especially at the start of the week when
students are writing their spelling words in for the week and on Fridays for
testing.
This week I have asked the students to make a list in the front of their home
learning books of examples of ‘Kiwiana.’ Please discuss this with your child.
You are most welcome to add items to the list.
If you have any questions or concerns please come in to see me before or after
school or drop me a note.
Have a fabulous camp experience Room 1.
It’s great to see everyone whizzing around on scooters at lunchtimes.
Have a wonderful week everyone,
Mandy 
Room 8
Hi everyone,
A big welcome to Leshae Young who started school last week. Happy school
days, Leshae!
A short week this week so a lot to jam in to the four days.
We are going to learn about the letters h and r and will be
reading the big book, ‘Hairy Bear’. On Friday we are
going to make our own hairy bear!
Children are beginning to get very familiar with many of
their sight words which is fantastic. To help your child
master these words they need to be looked at and read over and over again, at
school and at home. We look at them a lot at school so please encourage them to
take them out at home every night as well. In our cloak bay above the children’s
bags you can see how many words your child can read on our ‘Word Wall’. We
are trying to reach the top!
Swimming continues so please try to have togs at school every day.
Our school Gala is fast approaching and it is time to get donations coming in for
raffles and prizes to give away on the day. We are so appreciative of anything
that you can spare for our Gala – every little bit helps. Our class are responsible
for two major contributions:
 Every child is asked to bring $2 to go towards purchasing ‘Scratchie’
tickets for our class raffle (we are joining with Room 2 for this)
 Every child is asked to bring a can of fruit for the grocery raffles.
These can be brought into class anytime from now on. We are also on the lookout for goods for the ‘White Elephant’ stall. Thanks for all your support with
this!
Have a great week,
Jude
