Welcome to the NYISO!
We developed this Regional Resource Guide to give our employees the opportunity to learn more about
living and working in the Capital District. Here at the NYISO, we are part of a vibrant region that offers
something for everyone from theater and the arts to outdoor recreation, education and more.
This guide captures a diverse sample of many of the businesses and resources available in the Capital
District, but is not inclusive of all the region has to offer. In an effort to make sure our content is current
and relevant, we will provide periodic updates of the enclosed information. Therefore, if you identify any
regional resources that you feel should be included in this guide, please send your suggestions to

REGIONAL GUIDE
Our Regional Guide contains a wide selection of restaurants, shopping centers, entertainment
and recreation venues. It is your one-stop-shop for things to do in our area. The Regional
Guide is organized by predominant city or town, such as Troy or Albany, or by regional
parameters like Rensselaer to East Greenbush. Some regions, towns, or cities are much larger
or smaller than others, we chose the ones we thought best encapsulated the resources our area
has to offer. Each regional section contains the contact information and/or location of select
private or public institutions you may enjoy as well as an individual regional highlight for you to
enjoy!
RENSSELAER AND EAST GREENBUSH
Rensselaer and East Greenbush are steeped in regional and national history; both are also right at the
doorstep of the NYISO. Rensselaer has a small township nestled against the east bank of the
Hudson River, while the East Greenbush Township is situated several minutes to the south along
Route 20. The surrounding area has a mix of townships like Hampton Manor, and more suburban or
rural communities such as Schodack or Sand Lake. The City of Troy is a short drive to the north, while
the City of Albany is just across the Hudson River. Downtown Rensselaer is about 10 minutes due east
from the NYISO along 3rd Avenue (simply take a right leaving the NYISO) while East Greenbush
is about 10 minutes due south along Route 4/Troy Road (take a left out of the NYISO, and then turn
right at the 2nd light). The average home value in East Greenbush at the end of 2014 was $198,000,
while the average in Rensselaer was $128,000, situating them on either side of the national average
which was $177,000 at the time. The region around these two towns contains a mixture of urban/
suburban areas with woods and parks and more rural communities with easy access to Albany. There is
also a regional Amtrak station in Rensselaer that provides access to New York, Boston, Montreal, and
Chicago. Additionally, there are public buses through the Capital District Transit Authority (CDTA) that
run daily to points throughout the Capital District.

The Joseph L. Bruno Stadium
The Joseph L. Bruno Stadium is a
baseball stadium located just up the
road from the NYISO on the campus
of The Hudson Valley Community
College and is home to the Tri-City Valley Cats of the New York-Penn Baseball League. Named after a
local politician and one time New York State Senate Majority Leader, The Joe has become a regional
mainstay since its 2002 opening. The Joe offers family friendly activities during the season in addition
to being a resource for students from the College and various summer camps provided by the College.
The NYISO has sponsored a “Night at the Ballpark” since 2005 where employees attend free of charge
and their guests attend at a discount.

ALBANY
Albany, the capital of New York State, is the centerpiece of the Capital District. Originally founded as a
Dutch fur trading post, Albany was given its current name when the British took it over in mid 1600’s.
Located on the western bank of the Hudson, across from Rensselaer, Albany’s skyline is marked by the
skyscrapers of the Empire State Plaza and the oblong shape of the “Egg” Performance Space. Albany
is also home to a variety of local neighborhoods, the region’s largest hospital, and a thriving downtown
scene with plenty of nightlife and weekend activities. Schenectady is to the northwest, while the city of
Troy lies just a short ways north along the Hudson. Albany is a simple ten minute drive down 3rd Ave
Ext, through Rensselaer, and across the river from the NYISO. Average home values in Albany at the
end of 2014 were $152,000, placing it below the national average at the time, which was $177,000.
Public transportation in Albany is handled by the Capital District Transit Authority (CDTA), which has
many lines within city limits. Additionally, Albany International Airport serves the Capital District and is
located in the north of the City off of I-87.

Regional Highlight
The Egg Performing Arts Center
A dominant feature of the Albany skyline, The Egg is known as much for its odd architecture as it is
for the high caliber of performances that grace its stages. Completed in 1978 the Egg has remained a
timeless icon in the capital district due to the wide variety of music, dance, and other forms of stage
performance. Including two amphitheaters within its round body, the Egg is a premier venue for the
capital district and regularly welcomes the most prestigious performing acts to the area. The size and
nature of The Egg’s architecture also allows for a very intimate audience experience.

TROY
Once an important steel manufacturing town, Troy is also known as the Collar City for its shirt collar
expertise in the textiles industry in the 1800’s. Troy also boasts to be the home of “Uncle Sam” because
of the nickname U.S military personnel gave legendary Troy resident and butcher, Samuel Wilson. Troy
has a downtown area that is surrounded by more residential neighborhoods to the north and south
and also further inland from the Hudson River. Average home values in Troy at the end of 2014 were
$130,000, well below the national average of $177,000. Troy is connected to the Capital District through
Capital District Transit Authority (CDTA) buses, as well as a bike path to Albany located a short distance
across the river in Watervliet. From the NYISO, Troy is a short drive north on Route 4 (Troy Road), or
I-787.

Regional Highlight
Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center (EMPAC)
EMPAC is one of the most unique performing arts centers in the region, state, country, and world.
Situated on top of “The Hill” in Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s campus, EMPAC offers up state of
the art acoustics and stage construction for traditional performances, such as musical acts, plays, and
speakers. However, according to the website, EMPAC “is where the arts, sciences, and technology
interact and with each other.” When science and art mix at EMPAC is when the space is used to its
full potential. Features of the four main venues inside EMPAC include industry leading acoustical
technology, leading lighting tools (including the ability to use your body and expression to interact with
the technology) and theatrical technologies, such as computer controlled staging. EMPAC is an exciting
venue for any community, and we are proud to have it in ours.

SARATOGA COUNTY
Saratoga County covers a large region which includes two cities, nineteen towns and six villages; which
provides the choice of suburban or rural communities. Saratoga is often known for its horse racing and
performing arts center. However, it is also the site of a monumental battle during the Revolutionary War
and, contains many naturally occurring springs. Downtown, the city of Saratoga Springs, is a vibrant
community of shops, restaurants and bars centered along the main thoroughfare, Broadway. The
average home value in Saratoga was $236,000 at the end of 2014, placing it well above the national
average of $177,000 at the time. However, the average home value may be slightly inflated due to its
popularity as a summer residence, in addition to the wealthy horse racing industry. Saratoga County
is due north, approximately 45 minutes, from NYISO on I-87. Capital District Transit Authority (CDTA)
buses connect Saratoga with the rest of the Capital District, while Amtrak, Greyhound, and BoltBus all
service Saratoga for traveling further abroad.

Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC)
Saratoga’s motto is “Health, Horses, History” due to its vital role in the success of the Colonies in the
Revolutionary War, the famous horse racing track to the south of town, and the natural springs that
used to draw people to Saratoga seeking their healing qualities. However, there is another attractive
feature in Saratoga Springs. SPAC is a large amphitheater situated in the Saratoga Spa State Park.
SPAC attracts the largest acts to the area with a seating area of 5,100 and a further 20,000 spots
available on the lawn facing the amphitheater. Known for the traveling acts, which make annual trips to
the venue, SPAC is also the summer home for the New York City Ballet and Philadelphia Orchestra.

SCHENECTADY COUNTY
Born in the spirit of discovery, Schenectady County is known for its new trails in electricity,
transportation and technology. Schenectady is situated to the northwest, roughly twenty-five minutes
outside of downtown Albany. It is the home of five towns Duanesburg, Glenville, Niskayuna, Princetown
and Rotterdam as well as two villages Delanson and Scotia; providing a nice balance of suburban and
rural communities. Downtown Schenectady is a city filled with restaurants, arts and entertainment, and
nightlife. Average home values in Schenectady at the end 2014 were $149,000 placing it below the
national average at the time, which was $177,000. Public transportation is provided by the Capital
District Transit Authority (CDTA) with many lines covering the city limits.

Proctors Theatre
Proctors Theatre is located in the heart of downtown Schenectady where it has been situated since
1926 when it was built. Unfortunately with the onset of the Great Depression in the 30s came a
downward economic spiral and a devastating decline for the theatre, which led to its closing for
decades. But the community banded together in the 70s to raise both federal and city funds to restore
and re-open the theatre in 1979. Over the past handful of years, Proctors has expanded and undergone
several renovations which allows for the ability to accommodate its ever-growing audience. Proctors is
a great arts and entertainment attraction for men and women of all ages.
