There is something about Boston. It’s the spirit of the race.
When you stand in the corrals in Hopkinton, the anticipation
is palpable. When you crest Heartbreak Hill, you feel the relief
that the home stretch is within reach. Making your way down
Boylston, you’ll feel like you’re coming home. It doesn’t matter
if you were born and raised right across town – or you traveled
thousands of miles to get here – on Marathon Monday everyone
is a Bostonian. You’re here. This is it. There’s only one Boston.

claim your bib number for you. The official bib that is assigned to you by the B.A.A.
for the 2015 Boston Marathon must be visible at all times on race day while on/in B.A.A.

P R E - R A C E
BIB NUMBER
Your official race bib number has important information printed on it and, therefore, it
is critical for it to be clearly displayed on the front of your torso during the entire race.
A gear check tag printed with a number corresponding to your bib number is included in
your race packet. Affix the tag to the bag provided to you at packet pick-up.
.Do not alter, fold, cover, or reproduce the bib number in any way.
.Bib numbers are not transferable or exchangeable. No one else may wear your bib
number.
.Fill in necessary medical and emergency contact information on the reverse side of
your bib number.
.Do not go back on any part of the race course, and do not cross the finish line twice.
.The B.A.A. asks participants not to post close-up pictures of their bib number on social
media before the race to avoid fraudulent bib duplication. If an athlete is found to have
duplicated a bib number, or if his/her bib number has been duplicated by another party,
the athlete will be subject to disqualification. Upon receiving a bib number by way of
qualifying, as a guest, or as a fundraiser for charity, the athlete takes sole responsibility
for their bib number. The B.A.A. will disqualify anyone found to have duplicated a bib
number, or been the source of a duplicated bib number.

GEAR CHECK AT BOSTON COMMON
There will be a “no bags” policy for the Boston Marathon. To learn more about this and
about allowable items on race day, please visit www.baa.org.
A gear check opportunity on Boston Common will be available on the morning of the
Boston Marathon, allowing official participants to have a change of clothing at the
conclusion of the race. The bag to be used for this purpose will be provided at Number
Pick-up by the B.A.A. and will be within your complimentary race packet. The gear
check bag is 18" wide, 18" tall, and has a 4" bottom. This clear, plastic bag has a drawstring encloser and the words “Runner Gear Bag” printed on it. You must use this clear,
plastic bag for bag check. No other bags will be accepted.
The gear check area will be located at the Parkman Bandstand on the eastern side of the
Boston Common. Gear check tents will be color coded and will correspond to the color
of the wave to which you have been assigned (red, white, blue, or yellow). Please locate
the appropriate gear check tent.
8
PRE-RACE
You will receive a gear check tag at number pick-up for the purpose of retrieving your
bag. Affix the tag to the drawstring of your gear check bag using the tie that is provided
in your race packet. Any items that you would like to have with you at the conclusion of
the race must be placed inside the clear, plastic bag that the B.A.A. will provide for you.
You must leave your clear, plastic bag at the gear check area on Boston Common prior
to boarding the B.A.A. shuttle bus to the start in Hopkinton. Please be aware that the
gear check area on Boston Common is approximately one half mile from the exit of the
finish area at Arlington Street.
Do not check any valuables. Although we will do our best to ensure that your gear is
waiting for you at the end of the race, we are not responsible for lost gear check bags.
Hours of Operation: Gear check bags may be checked at Boston Common between 5:30
a.m. and 9:30 a.m. on Monday, April 20. Gear may be claimed from 12:30 p.m. to 6:00
p.m. on Monday, April 20.
Unclaimed Gear: Gear check bags not claimed by 6:00 p.m. on Monday, April 20, will
be transported to the Boston Common Hotel and Conference Center at 40 Trinity Place,
located at the corner of Stuart Street and Trinity Place. Gear check bags may be claimed
on Tuesday, April 21, and Wednesday, April 22, between 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.

PARKING IN HOPKINTON
Parking in Hopkinton is extremely limited and security measures may slow access
from the parking areas for spectators and runners. We STRONGLY recommend that
all entrants take the official B.A.A. buses from Boston to Hopkinton on race morning, as
it is the only way we can ensure that you will get into Hopkinton.
Please note that the roads within the town of Hopkinton close at 7:00 a.m. and no street
parking will be available. Limited runner parking is available at the South Street lot and
volunteer/spectator parking at the Hopkinton State Park on Route 85.
Once these lots are full, we will only allow runner drop-off at a designated lot on South
Street. Plan accordingly and give yourself ample time. Expect delays! Please do not park
illegally, as it will jeopardize the transportation system and will result in the vehicle
being towed at the owner’s expense. There will be no on-street parking allowed in
the town of Hopkinton.
Hopkinton State Park parking and shuttle service is for volunteers and spectators only.
Registered runners parking at this location and using this shuttle will not be transported
to the Athletes’ Village and will have to walk an additional one mile from the drop-off
point to the Village. These runners may be subject to additional security screening to enter the Village. Registered runners are requested to use the shuttle buses from the South
Street parking lots in order to ensure timely arrival at the Athletes’ Village.
Directions from Boston to South Street parking lot – Massachusetts Turnpike (I-90) to
Route 495 South to exit 21B. Also take exit 21B if coming from Route 495 North.
Or from Boston and all other directions to the Hopkinton State Park – Massachusetts
Turnpike (I-90) to Route 9 (exit 12). Follow Route 9 West to Route 85 South.

RULES & REGULATIONS
R AC E DAY
.Runners
will be lined up on Main Street only. Follow signs to your particular corral,
which is located about .7-mile from the Athletes’ Village.
.All runners are numbered according to qualifying times, facilitating a start and pace
comparable to others with similar qualifying times. Runners should line up in the
corral they have been assigned.
.Bib numbers are color-coded. Red bibs (numbers 101–7,700) are assigned to Wave
1. White bibs (numbers 8,000–15,600) are assigned to Wave 2. Blue bibs (numbers
16,000–23,600) are assigned to Wave 3. Yellow bibs (numbers 24,000–32,500)
are assigned to Wave 4. Please start in the corral and the Wave to which you have been
assigned. Your starting corral is printed beneath your runner’s number on your bib.
.You may move from your assigned Wave to a later Wave. For example, if you are
assigned to Wave 1, you may move back to Wave 2, Wave 3, or Wave 4 in any corral
EXCEPT the first corral in any Wave. However, you may NOT move to an earlier
Wave. For example, you may not move from Wave 4 to Wave 3, from Wave 3 to Wave
2, or from Wave 2 to Wave 1. Violators are subject to penalties and/or disqualification.
.Remain in your assigned area for the benefit of both yourself and other competitors.
Please cooperate and play fair.
.Measures will be taken to disallow unauthorized participants from starting
within the official seeded sections. Official runners are asked to assist the
marshals by reporting unauthorized participants who may have entered a
corral. Only official runners with a B.A.A.-assigned bib number may enter a corral.
.Cooperate with the marshals at the Athletes’ Village, Start, and Finish.
.Runners will not be allowed to warm up in front of the starting line at any time.
.Clothing left at the Athletes’ Village, Start, and Finish will be donated to charity.
.For safety reasons, animals, strollers, in-line skates, skateboards and like vehicles of
any kind are not permitted.
.Although the B.A.A. discourages the use of iPods and headphones, they are allowed
except for those athletes who declare themselves eligible for prize money.
.Violators are subject to disqualification.
.There are additional toilets in Hopkinton at the Athletes’ Village and in Colella’s
Supermarket parking lot. Please use these units and NOT private property. Trespassing
is illegal, and the law will be strictly enforced. Violators are subject to immediate
disqualification and possible action by local law enforcement officials.
NOTE: Persons with disabilities will receive additional, special instructions by April 1.
TIMING & SCORING PROCEDURES
The B.A.A. uses a timing tag attached to the back of your bib number to score the race.
This bib number with timing tag must be worn on the front of your running jersey or
outermost garment from start to finish in order for you to be recognized as completing
the race and receiving an official finish time. No times are recorded after approximately 5:30 p.m. (or six hours after the last official runner crosses the starting
line).
It is important that your bib not be forcefully bent, creased, or heavily wrinkled, as
damaged timing tags may not work on race day. The timing tag identifies your bib
number and should not be worn by any other entrant. All you must do is wear the bib;
computers do the rest.
The B.A.A. uses “net” time as your official time. Your time, which will appear in the
official results, will begin when you cross the start line. This will enable us to provide
you with and score you by the net time that it took you to run the 26.2 miles of the race.
It is this net time which can be used as your qualifying time for the 2016 Boston Marathon, and it is the time printed on your finisher’s certificate.

COURSE AMENITIES
.Fluid

Poland Spring Water and Lemon Lime Gatorade Endurance
Formula stations will be set up along the course beginning at
Mile Two. Note that the stations are staggered on each side of the
road, i.e., the station on the right side will fall immediately prior
to a similar station on the left side of the road. This is done to
avoid runner gridlock, and we urge runners not to cross over
from one side of the road to the other at the water stations.
Clocks and Mile/Kilometer Signage
Digital clocks, positioned at every mile and 5K mark, indicate the unofficial running
time from the 10:00 a.m. start only. Signage indicates mile and 5K marks.
.Course
out
Runners unable to finish the race may stop for assistance and direction at one of the
26 American Red Cross first aid stations along the course.
Sweep buses pick up runners at every Red Cross station with drop-off at the Finish
Area medical tent. Aid stations along the course close at staggered times during the day.
Finish area facilities officially close at approximately 5:30 p.m.
.Drop
R AC E DAY

A Clif Shot Energy Gel station will be located just prior to the mile 17 fluid station.
.Energy
Closure
Runners still out on the course when officials determine that it is time to reopen the
roads (approximately a 14:23 minute-per-mile pace) will be instructed to move to the
right side of the road. Once roads begin to reopen to vehicular traffic, course infrastructure (such as timing systems, course clocks, medical stations, and water stations)
will all begin to close and cease operation. Runners on the course after this time
accept that they will be on their own and should plan accordingly. The B.A.A. will
have a team of cyclists in the rear of the pack to assist runners who are at or slower
than 14:23-minute-per-mile pace.
.Course
.Toilets
For your convenience and use during the race, the B.A.A. provides toilets at every
water and Red Cross station, as well as at additional locations along the course.
Please respect the communities through which the Boston Marathon runs by taking
advantage of these facilities, if needed.
Athlete Search
The B.A.A. will post every 5-kilometer split to its website. Family and friends can track
your progress by logging in and entering your name or bib number. The “face” of the
Boston Marathon website will change on race day and the process of how to search
will be clear.

The B.A.A. and the Boston Marathon Medical Team urge all runners to consult their personal physicians prior to training and running the marathon. Traditionally, distance running is a safe and healthy form of exercise, but there are inherent risks associated with running extreme distances, especially if you have certain pre existing medical conditions.
Only a physician familiar with your personal medical history, current health status, medications, and your pre existing
risk factors can advise you as to whether you are fit to run the Boston Marathon. Taking these simple steps and heeding the advice of your personal physician will give you the ability to make the right decisions and enjoy a healthy race.
SERVICES
.Medical Services - The Start in Hopkinton
ME DI C AL
20
The Athletes’ Village will have two medical tents that can offer assistance with most last minute
medical needs. Band-Aids, Vaseline, a pre-race stretch, or just a word of encouragement can be
offered by our medical team. Please complete two very important tasks before leaving the
Athletes’ Village: 1.) Write your current or pre-event weight on the back of your bib. This figure
may help us determine if you’ve been over-drinking during the event. 2.) It’s also very important
that you complete the emergency contact information on the back of your bib. Information such
as allergies, medical conditions, and two emergency telephone numbers should be included.
If possible, one of the emergency contact numbers should be that of someone waiting for you near
the finish.
.Medical Services - On-course
The American Red Cross provides 26 medical aid stations strategically located along the course.
Each tent is staffed with a variety of medical professionals, offering basic first aid to those in
need. Course medical coverage is supported with ambulances and EMS bike teams provided by
Fallon Ambulance, American Medical Response, and Cataldo Ambulance Company.
.Sweep Medical Bus Program
Medical sweep buses are positioned along the course aid stations. These buses are available to
those runners who cannot finish the race and/or may have a minor medical problem. Each bus is
staffed by medical volunteers who are available to provide first aid. A runner may choose to rest
on the bus while it is parked at a first aid station. However, once the bus begins to move, the
runner is no longer an official entrant and you will not be given an official finish time. Once
on the bus, the runner may not re-enter the course to complete the marathon. Medical Sweep
buses are required to travel from aid station to aid station and do not travel directly to the
finish area in Boston. Once you arrive in Boston, you have the option of seeking care in our
medical tents or entering the gear check area to pick up your clothing.
.Medical Services - Finish Line/Finish Area
Medical teams are located at the finish line and the main medical tent, which is located on
Dartmouth Street. A second tent/facility is located farther down on St. James Street at Berkeley
Street. Additional members of the medical team are staffed along recovery zones leading to the
Family Meeting Area. Medical personnel can be identified by their white volunteer jackets. If you
are injured or feeling ill, please seek out a member of the medical team for aid.
.Massage Therapy Services
Massage therapy is offered to the athletes on a limited, first-come first-served basis. Treatments
may last from five to 15 minutes. Post-event massage in Boston is offered at the Dorothy Quincy
Suite inside the Back Bay Events Center at the corner of Berkeley and Stuart Streets near the
Family Meeting Area. Expected wait time for a massage varies with the number of volunteer
massage therapists available at the time.
.After You Cross the Finish Line
During any prolonged physical activity, the body’s blood supply is usually redirected to the
extremities and away from internal organs. Runners should continue to walk after finishing the
race. Standing still or stopping can cause nausea, dizziness, and weakness – normally resulting
with a runner passing out. Walking will help redirect your blood to vital organs, so it is advis able to keep moving. In any event, if you think you need help, ask one of our medical person nel for assistance.
.Medical Expenses
Any medical expenses (including ambulance transfers and hospital visits) incurred from your
participation in the Boston Marathon are the sole responsibility of the runner.
.Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
Together with the American Red Cross and the American Heart Association, the Boston Athletic
Association presents a video of “hands only” CPR.

HYDRATION, DEHYDRATION, AND HYPONATREMIA
WEATHER
ME DI C AL
The B.A.A. and the Boston Marathon Medical Team have provided each registered runner with
a brochure, which accompanies this Welcome Booklet. The brochure, entitled “The Right Way to
Hydrate for a Marathon,” has been developed by the American Medical Athletic Association and
offers important information relevant to athletes of all abilities. It’s important for runners to be
aware that there are many risks involved in running a marathon. It must also be understood that
a runner’s susceptibility to a particular risk will depend on a number of different factors, including
factors unique to the individual runner. Medical knowledge and medical therapies relating to distance running are continuing to evolve and develop. For instance, one of the risks which is receiving
attention is hyponatremia, and there are studies which indicate that females, runners with a slight
build, runners that take over four hours to complete the course, and those taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (such as Advil, Motrin, Aleve, ibuprofen, naproxen, etc.) may be particularly
susceptible to this risk. This is usually associated with weight gain. One suggestion for the runner
is to measure their weight before and after a training run. One should finish a long run at about
the same weight or up to 2% below the pre-run weight. Changes above or below these levels may
be predisposed to hyponatremia or hyperthermia respectively. It’s your responsibility to understand
your specific fluid needs and not over drink before, during, or after the event. Unfortunately, no
one study is definitive or comprehensive. Therefore, the B.A.A. and the Boston Marathon Medical
Team urge all participants to read publicly available materials and to educate themselves fully
about the medical risks associated with running a marathon. It’s very important for the runner to
determine hydration needs prior to the race. However as a rough guide, if you’re a fast runner on a
pace of less than 3 ½ hours, drinking about 16 oz per hour is usually adequate. If you’re on a pace
to finish in more than 4 hours, about 8 oz per hour is usually adequate. There are frequent water/
Gatorade stations along the course for your convenience. However, it’s not necessary to stop at
every station. This could result in over-hydration. It is also very important to not over-hydrate at
the end of the race. Rehydration should be gradual over the next 24 hours. Two ways to continually
monitor your fluid status in training are to measure your weight, stripped down, before and after a
run. You should gain no weight and typically lose up to 2% of body weight. After determining your
fluid needs, stick to this plan during the race. The second is to make sure your urine stays yellow,
not clear (overhydration) and not dark like apple juice (dehydrated), both are key indicators when
determining your hydration status.
Preparing for cold weather:
April in New England can be cold and rainy, so runners must dress properly. Approximately 60% of
body heat is lost from the head. Please wear appropriate clothing. At the 17-mile mark (entering
Newton) when crossing Rte. 128, you may experience strong, cold, crosswinds. After you finish the
race, change out of any wet gear as soon as possible. Heatsheet® Warmth Retention Capes will be
available at the finish. This product helps retain body heat, in the event of cold weather, or reflects
radiant heat, in the event of warm weather. Our best advice is to seek out family and friends to
assist you. Traditionally, the Family Meeting Area can be cold and windy; a plan to find post-race
support groups should be an important part of every runner’s post-race checklist.
Preparing for warm weather:
Of all the adversities that runners and marathoners face, heat is the number one offender. This is
because it can bring on two conditions that can negatively affect your performance: overheating
and dehydration. At times, the unpredictable nature of Boston’s weather, especially in April, can
offer warmer than normal temperatures, placing runners at risk for the potential of exercise
induced heat illness. The degree of risk is determined by two key factors, heat and humidity.
Simply stated, when both factors are present runners are encouraged to slow down from their
normal pace. If you are experiencing an illness (fever) or cold, your risk factors will increase.
Deciding not to run when temperature extremes are present or stopping if heat illness becomes an
issue is vital to your safety. Failure to do so can result in a rapid rise in temperature to dangerous
levels, which may damage the heat regulatory mechanism in the brain. The symptoms of impending heat illness include weakness, heat sensation on the upper body, a feeling of being light headed,
confusion, blurred vision, shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting, a generalized sensation of tingling
in the neck and shoulders which can progress to disorientation, profound weakness, and collapse.

1.Public address announcements stating the risk of heat illness or hypothermia will be made in
Hopkinton at both the Athletes’ Village and at the starting line. Be aware that extreme weather
changes may occur after the start of the race.
2.Fluids are available before, during, and after the race. The medical team suggests you drink a
pint of fluid two hours before the start and then take fluids along the course at regular inter vals and as needed based on personal experience. Note: medical problems can arise from
excessive (hyponatremia), as well as insufficient intake of fluids. Both water and Gatorade
Endurance Formula will be available at each aid station along the route. Gatorade Endurance
Formula is a specialized sports drink that contains approximately twice the amount of sodium
(100 mg per 4 ounces) of Gatorade Thirst Quencher, along with chloride, potassium, magne sium and calcium to help sustain hydration by better replacing what is lost in sweat. For more
information on hydration, go to www.gatorade.com/endurance or www.gssiweb.com.
Gatorade Endurance Formula will help replace some of these minerals lost during exercise,
but will not prevent hyponatremia. If you feel ill along the course, we strongly recommend
that you seek medical attention at one of the American Red Cross First Aid Stations.
3.Twenty six (26) American Red Cross First Aid Stations are located along the route and mobile
emergency vehicles are positioned for transport to major medical centers. Teams of medical
personnel are located at the finish line to assist participants in need of attention, and these
teams are supported by a larger medical station located just past the finish line at the corner
of Boylston and Dartmouth Streets.
4.If you are feeling ill and experiencing medical problems, you are strongly urged to withdraw
from the race. Red Cross, local EMS, and buses staffed with medical personnel will pick you
up at any of our Red Cross First Aid Stations or along the route. Participants will be trans ported to the Finish Area at the rear of the primary medical tent. In some cases you may be
transported to a local hospital for follow-up care. We ask that you have hospital EMS contact
us once you arrive.
The responsibilities of every participant:
1.Consult your physician before starting any exercise program. If you have a known personal or
family history of a heart problems regardless of how insignificant you feel this is (such as
mitral valve prolapse), you should obtain a medical consultation from a physician trained in
the area of exercise and related heart conditions. If you suffer from exercise induced chest
pain, shortness of breath, dizziness or passing out, you should also consult such a physician
before training or running in the marathon. The extremes of this competition place much
stronger stresses on the heart than normal daily activities or recreational running.
2.Fill out emergency information, including medical history, and your pre-race weight on the
reverse of your bib number.
3.Listen and understand the meaning of local weather forecasts. Know the risks of participating
in extreme temperatures of either range and plan accordingly. Both heat related injuries and
hyponatremia are life threatening conditions. Adjust your race and hydration plans. DO NOT
OVER DRINK!
4.Develop and implement your individual plan for hydration. Be prepared to adjust your plan
given the weather conditions and how you are feeling during the race. Learn to judge your
fluid intake by your weight changes with running and in different conditions.
5.If you experience or feel you are about to experience a medical problem, ask for help immedi ately. It is foolish and dangerous to abuse your body.
6.Help your fellow participants. If you notice a runner in distress, ask if help is needed. When
appropriate, obtain assistance from our course medical groups, or local fire, police, and EMS
personnel.
