Summertime BASH
Giving should be fun
You should feel happy to give to your
favorite charity. But if writing one big
check isn’t part of your budget, what can
you do to increase your giving to Beverly
Farm and enjoy it at the same time?
Here are a few examples of how individuals and families have invited others to
give to Beverly Farm, and have increased
their overall giving:
- Dennis’ family gave to Beverly
Farm this past Christmas, forgoing
their usual holiday gift exchange;
• August 2015
Beverly Farm’s I’m an Artist
The Reporter is a quarterly
newsletter of the Beverly Farm
Foundation, a not-for-profit
organization serving adults
who live with intellectual or
developmental disabilities.

April - June 2015
- Shirley asked her friends to join her
60th birthday celebration by challenging them to each give $60 to
Beverly Farm;
- Three members of one family
chipped in equally to buy a brick for
their loved one;
- Tim’s mom’s friends surprised her
with a birthday party and, knowing
her commitment to Beverly Farm,
gave honorarium checks to be sent
to Beverly Farm on her behalf;
- Over the past several years, this
board member turned chairman has
held runs and BASH events, and she
has asked her family and friends to
join her; these days she plans a fall
run where each mile will be
dedicated to a loved one. She says the
individuals who live here are the
motivation for her efforts;
- Raise the Praise was a dynamic,
uplifting concert that was produced
and marketed by a Beverly Farm
family for several years. It was a
HUGE fundraiser for Beverly Farm
and brought a lot of people into our
circle of friends;
- Emily’s sister approached the nursing
school to give to Beverly Farm and
received a generous gift in response;
- The mayor of Bethalto turned his
retirement into a gala with proceeds
to benefit Beverly Farm’s Equestrian
Center;
- Families and friends of loved ones
often designate memorial gifts to
go to Beverly Farm. That is the
ultmate tribute.
You care about your loved one, and
you care about Beverly Farm. There are
limitless ways you can stretch your support of Beverly Farm.
How can we help?

Special Needs Trusts – a few basics for you
Special needs trusts were first created in the early
1970’s by families who were trying to determine the
best method to assure their loved one had sufficient financial resources to live a comfortable life.
A special needs trust is a trust established for the
benefit of a person who lives with a disability.
Special needs trusts are important for persons
who live with disabilities because trusts which
meet social security administration established
regulations are not counted as a resource for
determination of eligibility for SSI or Medicaid.
Funds from the trust can be used to supplement
income from SSI and Medicaid, and can be used
to meet medical and personal needs not covered
by benefits.
A trust can be established during the donor’s
lifetime (Living trust) or may be established at the
death of the donor by his or her will.
In order to protect benefits it is important that
a special needs trust have explicit language in the
trust that limits the use of funds to expenditures
which supplement, not supplant, benefits. Funds
in the special needs trust must not be directly available to the beneficiary, or SSI will count the funds
as his or her resource. The special needs trust is
controlled by a trustee, whose job it is to manage
the account on behalf of the beneficiary.
When property structured and utilized for
the sole benefit of the person who lives with a
disability, special needs trusts will be used to
supplement income from SSI and Medicaid,
can be used to meet medical and personal
needs not covered by benefits, and will not
jeopardize eligibility for SSI or Medicaid.
As you determine whether a special needs trust
is right for your situation, you need to be prepared to make decisions regarding designation
of a co-trustee and successor co-trustees, trust investment decisions and naming remainder beneficiaries. Consulting with an attorney and financial
or tax professionals prior to opening a special needs
trust is recommended.
We do not recommend specific individuals for you
to work with to develop Special Needs Trusts, but we
can suggest professionals who have worked with other
Beverly Farm families and other resources.
Are you interested in learning more about special
needs trusts? Should we plan to offer a special needs
trust session at this fall’s board/family weekend? Please
let us know your thoughts so we can determine the value of a special needs trust session.

Springboards to giving help you get started
Monthly giving is one of several giving options we suggest.
• Your gifts are easy to keep track of
• You automatically give each month
or quarter, whether by bank draft
or credit card
• Some people let us know to expect
a check from them each month
• After you set up the process, your
monthly gift is one that you and
Beverly Farm can count on.
Several years ago our families were
invited to consider giving monthly
to Beverly Farm. Most families who
responded at the time made a commitment to $25 per month.
$25 per month for one year totals
$300. Per year.
Perhaps they give generously to our
year-end or spring appeals in addition
to their monthly gift. Maybe they golf
in our tournaments or attend or give
toward our other fundraising events.
$50 per month for one year totals
$600.
Perhaps they use every opportunity
to give a memorial or honor gift. Maybe
their tax refund goes to Beverly Farm.
$100 per month for one year totals
$1200.
Their employer may give matching
gifts so their additional gift of $1000
becomes a $2000 donation to Beverly
Farm; their gift of $250 could become
a $500 gift to Beverly Farm.
$200 per month for one year totals
$2400.
Encouraging other members of
your family to give to Beverly Farm
can add up to more significant giving
on your and your loved one’s part.
Hosting a BASH event could invite
giving as well as awareness of Beverly
Farm.
options can help you to give more
throughout the year.
$25 was a good start. How can
we help you reach the next step in
your giving commitment to Beverly
Farm?

Third-party fundraising events
can be lots of fun and help you help
us offset the cost of programs and
services for which we do not receive
reimbursement. See examples of others’ ideas in this issue.
Monthly giving is an excellent
way to manage your giving to Beverly Farm. But if you are limited as to
how much you can give each month,
use it as a springboard to your
broader commitment. What are
other ways you can give to Beverly
Farm, what are ways your family
members or friends or employers
or others can give to help offset the
costs of care gap of $6000 per person per year?

year, with more participants and more unique
BASHES held!
Each BASH, as part of the overall Beverly
Farm’s Coast to Coast Summertime BASH, is a
great way for all of us to help to build awareness, support, interest and involvement of
friends, family, colleagues and others. It’s an
opportunity to let other people know about
Beverly Farm as you connect with others online,
in your neighborhood or wherever and however
you can.
The Pace/Baum Friends (who are volunteers
or donate and others) BASH
The Schmidt Family BASH (family of supporters share reunion with Beverly Farm)
Martha’s on the Dock BASH (old and new
friends joined up)
Keith’s Conversation BASH (talked with
friends and sent in a check)
Cody’s Friends and Family and Others BASH
(upscale and good time rummage sale)
The Tillers’ Campground Master BBQ and
Auction BASH (new friends eat and learn!)
Here are a few previous years’ BASHES:
The Chicago area Downey BASH (they didn’t let
it rain on their picnic/bbq)
The Birnbaum (Birthday) BASH (combined with
grandson Leo’s 2nd birthday!)
Volunteer Natalie’s BASH at Lake of the Ozarks
(family from IL, TX, GA, and MO)
Ena’s roving BASH throughout Missouri (on her
way to a float trip)
The Durand’s International Bike Riding BASH
(they took it to France)
The Allswang/Burnett (Birthday) BASH (combined with Vinton’s 4th birthday)
There were many more picnics, conversations and mentions of Beverly Farm
the 3rd Saturday of June over the past two
years. AND THERE ARE MANY MORE
CASUAL, COMFORTABLE, FRIENDLY,
AND FUN BASHES TO BE HELD!
WILL YOU HAVE A BASH THIS YEAR?

Beverly Farm’s 25th Annual Golf
Tournament
Beverly Farm’s Annual Golf Tournament
will celebrate its 25th year on Friday, June
5th, at Rolling Hills Golf Course, Godfrey.
Proceeds of this year’s tournament will help
offset the costs (nearly $50,000) to replace
worn flooring in the homes of people who live
at Beverly Farm. That means your support,
whether as a sponsor, donor, or golfer, will
help to provide a safer and more comfortable
environment in the homes of people who live
here.
Lunch at the course and registration will
begin at 11:00 a.m., followed by a shotgun start
at 12:00 p.m. Dinner and awards will follow the
tournament.
“Golfers will be able to participate in various events and we will have a few new events
on the course to help make a big splash and
a fun day of golf,” says Pam Whisler, Event
Chair.
We will also hold a silent auction, so if you
have an item or basket you would like to
donate please let us know.
“Your auction donations, sponsorships, and
participation will help assure the success of
this tournamnet and truly make a big splash as
we celebrate Beverly Farm’s 25th Annual Golf
Tournament!” Pam adds.
