Many of you may remember Brandon Hayward as the
past saltwater editor for Western Outdoor News, but he
is also one of the most well-known and respected saltwater fisherman in Southern California. Besides being
an avid fisherman, he is also the author of not one but
three books, The Southern California Angler, Getting
Bit and The Local Angler. And let’s not forget his recent writing, The Bight – A Journal for the Saltwater
Angler. Plus Brandon is into his third season as the
owner/operator/guide of One Man Charters, offering
fishing charters on 23 foot Parker specializing in fishing
for White Seabass, Halibut, Yellowtail, and basically
anything else that swims in the ocean. In 2013 his clients had 50+ White Seabass over 50 lbs. and nine over
60 lbs., all in local waters. But he also offers offshore
and island trips to Catalina and San Clemente. He is the
master at catching the 50 to 60-plus pound White Seabass. He also holds a 100-ton Master’s License from the
United States Coast Guard and has spent over 1,000 days working on San Diego
sportboats like the Excel, Pacific Queen, First String and Producer before starting his
career as an outdoor writer.

2014 Lake Morena Campout
The first weekend in June is our annual campout, back at Lake Morena by popular demand on June 6th –
June 8th. Lake Morena has something for everyone: Fishing (trout, bass, Blue Gill, Crappie), Hiking, Full
Hook-ups, Tent Camping, Hot Showers, Nature Programs put on by the Rangers, Campfires, even a café
nearby for those that wish a meal. Friday night will start off with a dinner, for those that wish to participate, at
Tim Macauley’s campsite #44 (please feel free to bring your own drinks, perhaps a side dish??). Saturday
day… our 2nd Annual Horseshoe Tournament and then Saturday night at 5:30 is the big potluck the Club provides the meat, BBQ Mike will be back by popular demand, and each family brings a side dish to share. Of
course there will be the annual Sunday morning Waffle Breakfast. For those who don’t want to camp, just
come up for the day on Saturday to visit, join the horseshoe tournament, and there will be a piñata for the little
ones, dinner, and stay for Smores at the campfire. To reserve your campsite, call Debbie Patenaude ASAP at
619-987-2037. Where else could you spend the whole weekend with friends for only $54!
**No swimming at Lake Morena Park.**
*** IMPORTANT NOTE** There are currently no state fishing licenses available in Lake Morena so
be sure you acquire one before you arrive.***
For daily fishing updates, call Lake Morena’s recorded fishing line at
(619) 478-5473.
2014 DAY AT THE DOCKS
This annual event located at the Sportfishing landings in Point Loma is on Sunday, April 13, 2014 from 9am – 5pm. This has to be one of the best fishing shows
in San Diego and best of all it’s FREE. If you did not get a chance to make it to
the Fred Hall Fishing Show in Del Mar, then don’t miss out on your last chance
to score on some great deals on fishing equipment and terminal tackle. There will
be food, seminars, cooking demos and of course the FREE Kids Fishing Pens.
Speaking of the kids fishing pens. John Delaurentis is once again in-charge of this
wonderful program for the pens run by the San Diego Anglers. But he needs our
help. If you have not signed up to volunteer for one of the 2-hour time slots. Please make sure to sign up at the
next club meeting on April 2nd or email John at [email protected]. The kids have a great a time and the more
volunteers we have the better. As always, we will have our club information booth located right in front of the
Fisherman’s Landing Pier. Be sure to stop by and visit.
San Quintin Fish Report
from Don Eddies
Recognized either of these two??
Team Don Eddies Hotel and Sport Fishing Center
led by Hotel owner Carlos Marquez along with Son
Luis and long time friend Bob Keleman went out for
some of the Spring time Yellowtail fishing. Capt.
Lilo of Pedros Pangas Captained the group. Largest
of their Yellowtail was 27 lbs. Limits of White fish,
Red rockfish and 6 Lings were also had.
The other members of Team Don Eddies led by Nick
(Doc) Gadler and Sons Chase, Carson and Donovan
fished with Capt. Juan Cook in his 28 ' Parker
Wheelhouse. Their catch for the day included three
Yellowtail between 26lbs. and 30 lbs. Limits of
Lings and Red Rock fish were also caught. The
group reported weather to be a little on the cool side
in the morning and then clearing around 11:00 with
a light ocean breeze.
That night mucho fiesta at Don Eddies restaurant
where Chef Leodardo prepared the Yellowtail in to
Sashimi to start the feast and then the part of the
catch fixed three ways including Ling Cod impanizado, Garlic and butter sauce and Ranchero style.
Fresh rice, refried frijoles and Tortillas made the
meal. Of course no fiesta would be complete with
out just a few cocktails from Don Eddies bar along
with soft drinks for the boys. Our good friend and
mariachi Tino entertained the group.
Preparations are under way for our annual July 4th.
Don Eddies Memorial Tournament and also our first
month long Kayak tournament will be held in the
month of June. More information may be had by
calling the new
Don Eddies 800 number at 866 - 989 - 6492.
