What is
periodontal disease?

Adults more than 90% have been contracted of this periodontal
disease(gum disease) which appear in tissues around teeth not in
teeth themselves. For tooth to function normally, periodontal tissues
should be healthy – gum to support teeth, dental root, and alveolar
bone etc. Periodontal disease begins with inflammation of gum and
severe inflammation gives damage on gum. If such damage
continues, it invades alveolar bone, which makes bone resorption.
Damaged bone cannot support teeth so that a tooth becomes loose
or falls out.
Over 60% of adults in Korea are contracted of such a terrible
periodontal disease which can cause loss of tooth. Periodontal
disease is one of two great dental diseases along with dental caries.
As one becomes older, morbidity rate tends to increase. Periodontal
disease had been called toothache occurred without tooth decay or
damage in the past. Periodontal disease does not show clear
symptom in the beginning and if severe symptom appears, treatment
is impossible or there are many undesirable results even after
treatment. Morbidity rate of dental caries sharply decreases around
20 years old but Morbidity rate of periodontal disease increases from
30 years old. Reaching 40 – 50 years old, 60-70% of adults are
contracted of this disease. Causes to lose teeth almost correspond to
such rates.
