THIS WEEK IN HISTORY:
January 28, 1986, at 11:38 a.m. EST the space shuttle Challenger lifts off from Cape Canaveral, Florida,
and Christa McAuliffe is on her way to becoming the first ordinary U.S. civilian to travel into space.
McAuliffe, a 37-year-old high school social studies teacher from New Hampshire, won a competition that
earned her a place among the seven-member crew of the Challenger. Seventy-three seconds into the flight,
hundreds on the ground, including Christa’s family, stared in disbelief as the shuttle exploded in a forking
plume of smoke and fire. Millions more watched the wrenching tragedy unfold on live television. There were
no survivors.

Spring blood drives conducted by
the Red Cross are scheduled for:

Pharmacy Tech Advisory
The Division of Adult and Career Education held a
Pharmacy Technician Employer Advisory Board meeting
at Evans Adult School Thursday, January 21, 2016.
ELASA staff in attendance were: Alma Alvarez, Aaron
Saenz, and Pharmacy Tech Instructor Vicky Broccolo.
Representatives from CVS, and Kaiser Permanente
offered input regarding skills needed for employment.
Topics of discussion focused on Personal and Technical
skills such as “People Skills”, “Ability to collaborate with
Co-Workers” “Personal Hygiene”… These “Soft Skills”
mentioned seem to be a common thread amongst
employers in general. Keep these attributes in mind as
you train for your careers and seek employment .

While the vast majority of employees have a strong commitment to their work and excellent attendance, it is also clear
that unnecessary absenteeism has a negative impact upon student achievement due to interruption of the continuity of
instruction, and results in reduced productivity, loss of service, and significant costs to the Los Angeles Unified School
District ( LAUSD).
