Dear Friends at EKLC,
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! I am writing this note to you
before Christmas, so my head is still in Christmas mode. But I believe
that Christmas does not end on Christmas Day as the secular culture
wants us to believe. (Do you know that I saw Valentine’s stuff up to buy at a store on
December 22?) Christmas begins at sundown on Christmas Eve and continues through
January 6, the day the church remembers the Epiphany of Our Lord.
Epiphany and the season after is one of my favorite times of year. We remember Jesus’
baptism, we learn of his character and his power as he turns water into wine, and we see
shining Jesus at the Transfiguration. This all leads up to Lent, which begins early this year
on February 10.
All through January and into February, the star of Bethlehem shines brightly, putting light
in dark places, making Jesus known as the Son of God, showing us God’s love through Jesus,
empowering us to reflect that love where the world most needs it.
This time of year invites us to simplify, and you’ll see us doing that at EKLC. It’s a time to
set priorities and figure out what is most central to our faith and our rituals. When Lent
arrives, we can go inside ourselves and reflect and renew our relationships with God as our
priorities are hopefully more aligned with how God creates us.
The beginning of the New Year also gives us time to pause and to be made new. We give
ourselves second chances to “resolve” to correct our lives. New Year's resolutions don’t
typically last very long in our culture. Revelation 21:5 (CEB) says, “Look! I am making all
things new.” God makes us new every day when we die to our sin and rise to new life in
Christ. As Christians, every day is our January 1. Every day, we can be new, different, and
leaning toward what God creates us to be.
I look forward to a full year with you, and I pray that 2016 is fruitful and faithful to give
God glory. Let our lights shine!

Dear East Koshkonong Family and Friends, we have been blessed this year with
the presence and support of our new Pastor Brenda Lovick. We thank our staff and
many volunteers as we continue to grow in our faith, helping to keep our church
strong on the Koshkonong Prairie. I look forward to another year of serving on
our church council as we work together to build a strong congregation.

EKLC November Council Minutes November 18, 2015
Meeting called to order by Sonja Christensen at 6:31 p.m.
Attendance: Pastor Brenda, Elizabeth Kaashagen, Sonja Christensen, Don Amundson, Hilary Terland, Brian Rosenthal, Sharon Jacobson, Brenda Schroeder
Absent: Roger Evenson
Devotions: Shared by Pastor Brenda
Amendment to the October 21, 2015, meeting minutes. It should
state United Community Bank instead of Unity Community Bank.
Motion to approve the amended October 21, 2015, meeting minutes
was made by Hilary Terland, seconded by Brian Rosenthal. Motion
carried.
Financial Report:
Income has exceeded expenses for the month of October.
The Building Loan is down to $5,839.62.
Undesignated memorials balance is $9,142.02.
Money Market transfers for benevolences to be paid by the end of
the year.
Council requested that the Spark Bible balance of $145.00 be
moved to the Sunday School Fund in the Money Market account.
Council requested that the accounts be arranged by fund categories
by committee.
Motion to approve the October financial reports was made by Don
Amundson, seconded by Hilary Terland. Motion carried.
General discussion on the preliminary budget. Finance Committee
to submit recommended budget to Council.

No meeting
Education/Youth:
See attached report dated November 9, 2015. It was noted
that the annual meeting date listed in the report is
1/25/16 and should be 1/24/16.
Property:
Items on the projects list are continuing to be added and
completed.
Possibility of forming a Parsonage Manager as a subset of
the Property Committee. This will be put on the December agenda.
Sonja Christensen will talk with Lane Taylor regarding an
awning for the educational building on the end by the
office.
Stewardship:
Our church will be hosting the Cambridge Community meal
on September 1, 2016.
Personnel:
Will be meeting to give information on recommended compensation for church personnel to Budget committee.
ARK:
Old Business:
Hilary followed up with Carolyn Lien who had gathered input from
the ladies at pin and sew regarding the loaning out of tables, chairs
and items from the kitchen. WELCA does not want items loaned
out. Council discussed and will support the guidelines outlined in
the WELCA handbook.
MS bike tour will be using our church as a rest stop as they have in
the past. This will be on August 7, 2016.

Motion to approve all standing reports was made by Brenda
Schroeder, seconded by Don Amundson. Motion carried.
Hilary Terland made a motion to adjourn the meeting at 8:43 pm,
seconded by Brian Rosenthal. Motion carried.
Adjournment – Closed with the Lord’s Prayer
Next meeting Wednesday, December 16th, at 6:30 p.m.

Decorating Committee has requested $500.00 for decorations. Hilary Terland made a motion to approve the request for $500.00 to be
taken from the Money Market interest. Seconded by Brenda
Schroeder. Motion carried.

Befrienders Meeting January 17 at 10:30 am

From Pastor Brenda: All current befrienders are asked to convene together to
connect with me and discuss how befrienders’ responsibilities are going. We
have some new people to add to our homebound list, and I would like to talk to
the befrienders as a committee about the process of adding people to the
befrienders’ visits list. Thank you for the important work that you do!

A special thank you to The David & Teresa Schickel Family for donating and setting up the
candles for the Candle Lighting Ceremony at the Christmas Eve services.
Needed:

Volunteer Information Technology expert to help occasionally manage the technology in the church office. If you have those gifts in this area please contact
church office 423-3017.

Nursery Volunteer Coordinator to ensure weekly nursery assistants and to help
assistants maintain and update nursery equipment.

Let’s knit and crochet some baby blankets!
I’m looking for knitters and crocheters to help me make baby
blankets for Global Health Ministries.
Blankets don’t have to be fancy. They can be just plain knit or
crochet. They should be at least 36” x 36”.
If you don’t want to make a whole blanket you can make strips or
squares and I will put them together.
I also have yarn if you need it. As long as the yarn is washable
it can be any color.

News from the church basement ladies.
Thank you to Joy Circle for presenting the wonderful Christmas Brunch. We all had a great
meal and good fellowship.
Thanks too to those who purchased gifts for residents at Alden Estates and Skaalen, and those
who delivered them. These will be appreciated and enjoyed by our friends who live in those
places.
Those of you who attended one or more of the Advent services held in the Upper Church enjoyed wonderful services in a beautiful setting. Thanks to those who worked hard so we would have light!!!
No official sewing day in January, but we may just get one going sometime during the month if we need to get out of our
houses and get together!!!

Would you like to help Pastor Brenda with
Sunday Confirmation?
Our confirmation class is a great group of five energetic
and bright young people. One way to affirm their value in
the congregation is for people from the congregation,
aside from their pastor and their families, to connect with them during confirmation class. The idea is that they will truly want to come back to church
after confirmation day when they are connected and belong through many
different relationships. This group loves to sit and talk about life and faith
and what’s going on in the world. If you are interested in guiding a confirmation class lesson and discussion, please let Pastor Brenda know. The dream is
to have a different person each Sunday to lead a class, so if you volunteer to
lead a class, it would only be one Sunday a year!
EKL Youth update
On December 16, EKL Youth met at Cambridge
Food Pantry after school to pack Christmas meal
bags. We packaged over 70 bags in less than an
hour! Thank you, Jaime Lewellin, for organizing
the service project. Thank you, food donors, for
bringing crackers and french fried onions for the meals. It was a very
successful day!
ELK Youth will meet after Sunday school and/or the annual meeting on
January 24. Fun plans are in the works! Please mark you calendars to be
here, with activities TBA.

The Cambridge Food Pantry & Resource Center is open for shopping every Monday evening from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. Guests are invited to shop every other Monday. Donation hours
are Monday 9 am to 12 pm & 4 pm to 5 pm, Wednesday 9 am to 12 pm and Thursday 9:00
am to 3 pm. The Food Pantry is located in the Nikolay Middle School, 211 South Street under the blue canopy.
FOOD/ITEMS NEEDED AT CAMBRIDGE FOOD PANTRY
The Cambridge Food Pantry needs Tuna, Canned Peas, Canned Potatoes, Cereal, Ramen Noodles, Deodorant, Shampoo,
Deodorant Soaps, Size 4 & 5 Diapers and MAXI Tampons and Pads.
THANK YOU to all who contributed Food Items and Money to make the Thanksgiving and Christmas Baskets for the Food
Pantry Clients this year---we made over 160 Baskets.
The Cambridge Foundation donated hams for Christmas Baskets and area churches contributed money and food items:
Grace Lutheran, St. Pius Catholic, St. James Lutheran, London Moravian, Rockdale Lutheran, Presbyterian Church of Oakland-Cambridge, Willerup Methodist and we received many donations from individuals in the community.
Community Café – Thursday, January 7th, is the next Cambridge Community
Café! The meal will be hosted by CART, Family Focus and Food Pantry
Volunteers who will be serving Chili, Ham and Turkey Sandwiches, and
Desserts. The Meal will be served at the at the CAMBRIDGE HIGH SCHOOL,
403 Blue Jay Way. Meal is served from 5:30 p.m. till 6:30 p.m. Everyone in
the community is invited to come.
