Presidents Message
I would like to wish everyone a happy Dental Assistant’s recognition week. Come celebrate our profession with us on March
17, 2014 at the Greenwood Inn. Our dental assistant week’s representatives have put together a fun filled night and have a
special guest in store for everyone. Remember to bring your member cards or number for door entry. Just a reminder with the
Newsletter, we will be a paperless delivery as of September, please make sure we have an accurate email for you.
I would like to thank the EDAA for extending their gracious invitation to us for their Dental Team Conference that was held on
Saturday February 1 2014, in Edmonton.
We have started the registrations for our dental spring seminar being held April 12 2014. Our guest speakers include Dr. Higashi
speaking about pharmacology, Dr. Ward speaking on Airway Ortho, Dr. Keyes speaking on restoring implants, and Dr. Touchan
on Oral cancer. Please see the attached information form for more details and speaker information. Please welcome your office team members to register for this seminar as well.
We do have some vacancies that will be opening on our board please contact our past president Vicky for more information.
Descriptions of positions available can be found on our website http://calgaryrda.ca/executive-committee. Volunteering with
the Calgary Dental Assistant Association is a great way to improve your networking, gain practice hours for competency, and
give back to the profession. I would like to encourage new graduates as well to consider volunteering with the association.

This year for Dental Health Month the CDAA will be putting together
brochures and distributing them to coffee shops, daycares, schools and
community health centres around the city. This years theme is "Oral Health
Awareness”. We will provide some goodie bags and distribute them to select
schools and daycares. If you would like to donate or could suggest a school

Important Changes Ahead
GENERAL MEETING VENUE
BYLAW CHANGES
With the decrease in revenue over the past year, our
secretary has been busy searching for a more
economical venue to hold our general meetings. The
change in meeting place would take place starting in
September 2014. Please ensure you inform any
assistants you know of the changes taking place.
There will be a bylaw change vote at the May 26th
AGM. The proposed changes will soon be posted on the
website for your review. The Executive has also been
busy updating the procedure manual to reflect the
changes that have taken place over the past year.
Updated documents will be posted on the website
shortly, check under “resources” at www.calgaryrda.ca
for more information.

Dr Shawn Higashi
Dr. Shawn Higashi has recently returned to Calgary after training in the US and developing an Oral & Maxillofacial surgery practice in
Thunder Bay, Ontario. He is a Board Certified in Maxillofacial surgery in Canada and the United States, and is a diplomate of Anesthesia.
He has a unique perspective, having experienced both the general and specialty sides of dentistry. This allows him to appreciate the challenges
faced by both disciplines and the integrated nature of optimal patient care. Dr. Higashi understands his role in supporting treatment plans
designed by general practitioners and does his part to achieve safe and predictable outcomes.
Presently, he practices in Northwest Calgary in a fully accredited General Anesthesia Surgical Facility. The patients are referred by an
amazing group of general dentists. He treats many routine third molar extraction cases, completes bone grafting, places implants, and performs
jaw surgeries and treats trauma cases.
Dr. Higashi will share his knowledge of pharmacology, common dental implications and emergency protocols.

Dr. Darin Ward
Education and Achievements: Dr. Ward graduated from Baylor College of Dentistry in 1998. He then completed more dentistry education
and moved to Eugene, Oregon where he focused on his private practice.Specializing in Orthodontic Care:In 2006, Dr. Ward realized his
calling in Orthodontics and was accepted into the Specialization program in Orthodontics, at the University of Colorado. After a further 27
months of intensive training in Colorado, Dr. Ward earned his designation of “Certified Specialist in Orthodontics.” Dr. Ward draws upon his
broad experience in practice as a General Dentist.Community Service: Community Service has always been an important part of Dr. Ward’s
practice of dentistry and his volunteer efforts include:



Volunteered for NW Medical Teams mobile clinic, 2005-2007
Participated in the Oregon Dentistry for the Disabled Program, 1999-2007
White Bird Community Clinic Volunteer, 1999-2007

Dr Ryan Keyes
Dr Keyes specializes in Prosthetic Dentistry. As a Board Certified Prosthodontist, Dr Keyes has advanced knowledge of complex
restorative & rehabilitative treatment options involving Crowns, Bridges, Veneers, Dentures and Dental Implants. Dr Keyes is from Calgary, is
adventurous, enjoys travel and has sought unique opportunities for education around the world. After completing a Bachelors Degree in
Science, Dr Keyes wanted to become involved in Dentistry. He then completed his dental training at the University of Sydney in
Australia. Following Dental school, Dr Keyes completed an additional 3 years residency in Graduate Prosthodontics at the University of
Minnesota. He is a Fellow with the Royal College of Dentists of Canada. Dr Keyes is registered with the Alberta Dental Association and
College, with practice focused on the Specialty of Prosthodontics. Dr Keyes enjoys teaching in the Dental field, and has worked as an adjunct
associate professor for the University of Minnesota, School of Dentistry in the department of Restorative Sciences. Also, Dr Keyes maintains
research interests at the University of Minnesota involving Dental Implants. Currently, Dr Keyes is involved with local and international
Dental study clubs and lectures as a Specialist in the field of Prosthetic Dentistry.

ORAL CANCER

Dr Simon Touchan
Dr. Simon Touchan obtained his dental degree from McGill University and his medical degree from Wayne State University. After completing
a certificate in General Surgery, he went into his specialty training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Michigan. Upon
completion of his residency program, he remained on staff at the University of Michigan providing surgical correction for patients with facial
trauma, head and neck pathology, facial deformity, sleep apnea and TMJ . Dr. Touchan was also involved in teaching several of the
undergraduate dental school courses and graduate courses for the departments of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Orthodontics. Dr.
Touchan went on to receive additional postgraduate training in Head and Neck Oncology and Microvascular Surgery before starting practice in
Calgary.Dr. Touchan is a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada and a licensed Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon in Alberta. Dr.
Touchan is fluent in three languages including English, French and Arabic.
