• The World Health Organization, in conjunction with the United
Nations Population Fund, UNICEF and the World Bank and with
the endorsement by the International Federation of Gynecology
and Obstetrics (FIGO) and the International Confederation of
Midwives, lists MVA as an essential technology for uterine
evacuation.
• The preferred method of evacuation of the uterus for treatment
of incomplete abortion is by manual vacuum aspiration. Dilatation
and curettage should be used only if manual vacuum aspiration
is not available.1
