PURE SHORES Haslemere TRAVEL incorporating Farnham Travel Established in 1988 village near Kengtung, Burma PU RE S HO RES • 2013 News let ter PURE SHORES 25TH ANNIVERSARY In 1988, 25 years ago, we started our travel agency in Haslemere, and can now look back over an exciting, unpredictable and enjoyable period, that has relied heavily on the loyalty and commitment of our employees. There have been many changes in our team over these years, but all of them have contributed so much to our success, and have led to our growing reputation and the many awards that we have received during this time. For the last five years, Gemma Antrobus has led the Company in to the modern world, embracing new technology, and leading the way forward with greater emphasis on specialist travel skills, customer service, hospitality competence and marketing expertise. Loyalty and trust are key factors in our success, and we are so grateful to all our regular customers, Haslemere TRAVEL who have supported us for so many years, some even from the day we started from a small office in Wey Hill. Since that day in 1988, we have needed to adapt, both with our business operations and also with our travel expertise, and we have aspired to match your expectations and experiences. We continue to improve our knowledge, to expand our global network and to retain our competitive prices. Our philosophy and ethos are as consistent as ever, and so is our commitment to honest, transparent and reliable service, which we hope will continue to retain your loyalty and your trust in the future. With our grateful thanks and appreciation, Andrew and Di Brownrigg. No visit to Kenya would be complete without a few days on safari. Our stay in February this year, was at Olonana situated just outside the Mara Triangle, by the Oloololo escarpment, just a short drive from the wonderful plains which eventually become the Serengeti in Tanzania. With a handful of camps able to visit this area, it belies the myth that the Mara is full of vehicles - on just about every occasion we saw a cat, be it civet, lion or leopard we were the sole onlookers. Three nights all inclusive to include return domestic flights from Nairobi, park fees, game viewing and all transfers based on two sharing (subject to exchange rates & changes in local taxes) (Abercrombie & Kent) FROM £1,340PP Wetlands and tree planting projects has earned Olonana a gold award for Ecotourism in Kenya. Accommodation is in huge tents under thatch with teak flooring extending out to your own viewing deck. Public areas are very comfortable with local artwork on display, with seating inside and out overlooking the river. Food is important here and does not disappoint – from breakfast pancakes, homemade pasta, Kenyan reared beef and chicken, fish flown in from the Indian Ocean to delicious tarts and pastries! The staff, too, are what makes it so special, attentive to every need and always that wonderful smile. This was Andrew and Di’s fifth visit to the Mara doubtless not the last: they will never cease to enjoy the wonderful variety of game and vistas here, one of the most exciting national parks in Africa. In the camp’s visitors book, renowned travel writer and safari expert, Brian Jackman, says it all: “the friendliest – and most ecofriendly lodge I have ever had the pleasure of visiting... Asante sana.” w w w.ha s lemeretravel.co.uk 3 PU RE S HO RES • 2013 News let ter CANADA WHALES & BEARS ON VANCOUVER ISLAND Vancouver Island is an island of spectacular and surprising contrasts, from beautiful and friendly Victoria in the south, to the rugged remote North, the stunning landscape of Cathedral Grove and Pacific Rim Highway which leads to the equally rugged west coast and Tofino, Ucluelet and Clayoquot Sound. This part of the west coast is a mecca for windsurfers from around the world, whale watchers and wildlife enthusiasts. It is rather hippy, and still greatly influenced by the First Nations Culture, which continues to protect the fishing and forestry development in this unspoiled part of North America. It is the home of the most diverse and spectacular variety of marine life: dolphins, porpoises, orca and humpbacked whales, seals, sea lions, sea otters as well as bald eagles, wolves, grizzlies and the elusive white bears. Vancouver is a compact and stylish city, dominated by its modern skyline and bustling waterfront with a stunning backdrop of mountains across the bay. For exercise you could take a bike ride round Stanley Park or get a free bus from Canada Drive to take you over the water for the ultimate workout “The Grouse Grind”. Travelling from the mainland to the outlying islands is easy with numerous ferries and float planes from the city centre. As a taster we recommends two nights at the Fairmont Waterfront in Vancouver, two nights at the Fairmont Empress, Victoria, three nights at Wickanninnish Inn, Tofino and two nights at Painters Lodge on the Campbell River: Twin share, inc car hire & ferry. (Prestige) FROM £1,900PP Andrew & Di highly recommend a visit to Vancouver and British Columbia for a taste of the new, the old and the wild – easy driving, great food and friendly and helpful locals.” This is the gateway to the Great Bear Rainforest and the celebrated Inside Passage that leads to the phenomenon of Alaska and the stunning glaciers, waterside forests, mountain lakes, bays and inlets of British Columbia. For cultural enjoyment visitors should also find time to experience and learn about American art, history and literature. Each state has its own specialties and claim to fame, Vermont for the Green Mountains, maple syrup and Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream, (and a glass of beer with Maria Von Trapp’s grandson at the family lodge). Massachusetts, known as the gateway to New England, and home of the beautiful city of Boston, the oldest major city in the USA. Maine for its beautiful seaside villages, rocky islands and museums. Connecticut for its lakes, wine trails, beaches and Mark Twain’s house in Hartford. Rhode Island for its heritage and fine dining and New Hampshire for Mount Washington, the White mountains and lakeside summer homes. New England has a great variety of hotels and inns to choose from, all offering great food and friendly hospitality, some quirky and some delightfully peaceful, some overlooking the sea or lake, and some with beautiful mountain views. Two nights at Loews, Boston, two nights at the Hancock Inn, New Hampshire & three nights at Sea Crest Beach Hotel, Cape Cod. including car hire. FROM £692PP Susie can give you first hand advice on the best ones to choose from, with her favourites being West Mountain Inn at Arlington, Captain Jefferds Inn at Kennebunkport, Crisanver House at Shrewsbury and Green Mountain Inn at Stowe. Christmas Farm Inn is magical at Christmas and the Trapp Family Lodge is surreal but does have its own brewery. The Fall may be the most beautiful time to visit New England, but summer is also a great time to appreciate its outdoor and recreational attractions.” w w w.ha s lemeretravel.co.uk 5 PU RE S HO RES • 2013 News let ter ASIA THE SPLENDOURS OF BURMA One of the most fascinating reasons for traveling to Burma is the opportunity to experience a corner of Asia that in many ways has changed little since British colonial times. Men still wear the traditional longyi and women are still smothered in thanakha (traditional make up). It’s a country which offers incredible landscapes, breathtaking edifices and tribal villages with the women whose faces are tattooed with intricate designs. Drift down the Ayeyarwady in an old river steamer, trek through pine forests to minority villages scattered across the Shan Hills or simply relax on a deserted beach with miles of pristine white sand on the Bay of Bengal. Nine days highlights of Burma. Twin share including flights and private guide throughout. (Abercrombie & Kent) FROM £2,440PP It is a country emerging, blinking and nervously learning to walk again after decades of brutal military dictatorship. As a visitor you sense this excitement and the enthusiasm with which the people greet the possibilities. The dilemma of course is that what the people strive for may destroy what we find attractive and so Burma should be visited now before too much change has taken place. A magical journey and highly recommended before it changes too much.” Call 01428 658777 or email experience@ha s lemeretravel.co.uk PU RE S HO RES • 2013 News let ter Jackie’s most vivid memories included a visit to the Schwedagon Pagoda in Yangon, and a boat cruise on the Irrawaddy where you really get too see life on the river and it is an interesting way to approach Bagan. Back in the 19th century Rudyard Kipling said of Burma... Bagan, with its 3000 buddhist temples scattered over the plains dating back to the 11th century, remains an active religious and pilgrimage site. It is well worth a visit to nearby Mount Popa with its monks and devoid of tourists if you are lucky! Here there is an interesting market specialising in local handicrafts. Now, if a bountiful Providence had clothed you in a purple, green, amber or puce petticoat, had thrown a rose-pink scarf-turban over your head, and had put you in a pleasant damp country where rice grew of itself and fish came up to be caught, putrefied and pickled, would you work? Would you not rather take a cheroot and loaf about the streets seeing what was to be seen?” And her favourite and definitely not to be missed was Inle Lake, leaving early in the morning with the mist still hanging over the surrounding hills and over the lake, past the floating gardens and villages, watching the fishermen paddle their boats with their unique one-legged style … Just wonderful. This description is still apt today. w w w.ha s lemeretravel.co.uk 7 PU RE S HO RES • 2013 News let ter MAURITIUS INDIAN OCEAN ISLAND MAGIC For many Mauritius is the jewel of the Indian Ocean, and with regular direct 12 hour flights and with only a 3 hour time difference, it is no wonder that our clients regularly choose this island for their holidays. The number of hotels has increased sevenfold since our first visits there 23 years ago and so it was to Terry that we left the task to re-visit and update us on this popular island. Because there is now such a choice of hotels from simple two star to six star luxury, we really do need to keep ourselves and our clients up do date. This visit gave him the opportunity to visit a range of hotels from all around the island: on the south and south west coast the Heritage Telfair, St Regis, and Lux Le Morne; on the west coast Sugar Beach and Maritim and in the north, close to Grand Baie, Paradise Cove and Veranda Virginie & Paul, whilst on the east coast the Belle Mare Plage, Le Prince Maurice, Four Seasons and Le Touessrok. These were just a selection of what is on offer on the island but it enabled Terry to get a much better idea of the hotel locations, distances between the different areas and what each has to offer, not just in terms of style of accommodation but dining options, bars, spa, child care, beach facilities, tennis and golf courses. One week at the Prince Maurice from £2099 in a junior suite with upgrade to full board, or one week at Paul & Virginie from £1509 all inclusive in a superior room – to include BA flights and return transfer – per person twin/double share. (If only) FROM With such a choice it is important to choose the right hotel; with this recent visit we are even better prepared to advise you on your dream holiday.” Outside the hotels there is magnificent scenery, stunning gardens and a whole host of activities: hiking and ziplining, canyoning, deep sea fishing and 4x4 adventures… £1,509PP Call 01428 658777 or email experience@ha s lemeretravel.co.uk ITALY LAKE GARDA IN DEPTH PU RE S HO RES • 2013 News let ter Howard’s first ever visit to Italy took him to Lake Garda. This beautiful lake stretches from Riva del Garda in the north to Sirmione in the South. It is a popular holiday destination with great water sports facilities in the north, historic castles, lovely gardens, great shopping (especially for leather), numerous restaurants and superb gelateria in abundance! He visited most, if not all, the towns and villages around the lake either by road, bike or via the great network of ferries that ply the waters. Probably the best position on the lake in terms of accessibility, by both ferry and hydrofoil, is Desanzano in the south western corner, which combines a picturesque lakeside resort with the vibrant atmosphere of a thriving Italian community. It has two harbours, two public beaches and good bus and train connections with both Verona and Venice making it a perfect two centre location. Malcesine, set along the eastern side of the lake, is one of the most attractive towns and has brought both writers and artists to admire its scenery and history. The town seems to have lot going on but the cobbled streets are slightly hilly so wouldn’t suit everyone. This is also where the panoramic cable car departs for Monte Baldo. Sirmione, set on a long narrow peninsula has been a favourite destination for many years. The Roman poet Catullus had a villa here, as did Maria Callas. Seven nights at the Grand Hotel Gardone in May inc flights, transfers, half board & accommodation in a lake view room £863. Four nights chalet board at the Hotel Galeazzi from £468 inc wine with meals - per person twin/double share. (Inghams) FROM £468PP The Grand Hotel Gardone, on the west bank, was the first hotel to be built on the Lake in 1884 – it has its own lakeside promenade and sandy beach and is certainly one of the best hotels on the lake.” w w w.ha s lemeretravel.co.uk 9 PU RE S HO RES • 2013 News let ter MOROCCO MYSTERIOUS FEZ The imperial city of Fez, capital of traditional Moroccan culture, welcomes tourists with open arms but at the same time does not compromise on its heritage and culture. The city has two medinas, the larger of which, Fes el Baliand, is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With over nine thousand streets it is believed to be one of the world’s largest car-free urban areas. Al-Qarawiyyin, founded in AD859 is the oldest continuously functioning madrasa (Islamic educational institution) in the world and the city has been called the “Mecca of the West” and the “Athens of Africa”. You must take a guided walk through the medina sharing the alleyways with the locals buying their fruit and vegetables or just passing the time of day outside their humble houses. This is not a place for tourist trinkets, instead you can watch women weaving intricate carpets, men behind their looms creating wondrous fabrics, see materials being dyed in huge vats in the streets and down each tiny alleyway hang lanterns and brass wear of every shape and size. Three nights at the Riad Fez including flights and transfers, twin share. (Kirker) FROM £692PP The gorgeous Riad Fes, where Gemma stayed, is situated within the medina walls – the 30 room property is made up of 5 riads. With a wealth of artefacts and antiques, the rooms all have their individual charm. The peace and tranquillity that you find here is astonishing when you consider you are in the very heart of a medina with 9000 streets! A perfect place for a long weekend or as part of a cultural tour of Morocco.” Call 01428 658777 or email experience@ha s lemeretravel.co.uk PU RE S HO RES • 2013 News let ter ASIA DESERT OASIS IN ARABIAN GULF Well away from the spectacular and high octane Dubai scene, Ras al Khaimah, the most northerly of the seven Emirate states, bordering the Arabian Gulf and Oman, is still relatively undeveloped and is only just beginning to join in the tourist market with the building of hotels along the coast. Its economy relies mainly on fishing, trading and agriculture, with fruit, vegetables, milk and poultry supplied to the other emirates; the seaside town also boasts a large, modern shopping mall with a good variety of restaurants, adjoining a testing 18 hole golf course. For a quieter and more authentic Arabian Gulf experience.” Contact Gemma for more information on the UAE. SWEDISH LAPLAND The IceHotel opens in mid-December, so Susie was able to actually see the ice sculptors at work; each year new designers are chosen to create different designs for each room all carved from ice, from the bed itself to flowers! The Hotel also has a chapel and hosts many truly romantic winter weddings. Susie also visited the Bjorkliden Mountain resort, and took the chair lift up to the Abisko Mountain sky station where, if you are lucky, you can get a sighting of the Northern Lights. 150km north of the Arctic Circle is Pine Tree Lodge Kangos, family run and set by a lake.
