Jason Reyes, winner of the inaugural Toyota Texas Bass Classic qualifier, held February 8-9, 2008 at Choke Canyon in South Texas, finished the two-day contest with 10 bass weighing a collective 48 pounds and 3 ounces, joining 24 other anglers that will advance to the Toyota Texas Bass Classic. The Toyota Texas Bass Classic is sanctioned by the Professional Anglers Association with technical assistance and support from Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s Inland Fisheries Division. The Texas Parks & Wildlife Department will receive a $250,000 donation from the Tournament that will deliver new funding for their youth fishing and outreach initiatives. Last year’s proceeds assisted the stocking of fish in Texas neighborhood lakes in an effort to introduce kids to fishing. For additional Tournament and ticket information, please visit www.toyotatexasbassclassic.com. Locations of those ramps may be found at www.tpwd.state. tx.us; click on “Fishing and Boating,” then on “Lakes” and use the lake list to find Lake Palestine public access points. TPWD Inland Fisheries Division personnel immediately investigated both areas and worked with the controlling authorities to install floating booms that will prevent wind from spreading the plants to other parts of the lakes. “We will clean the areas up by hand if possible,” said Howard Elder of Jasper, TPWD’s aquatic habitat biologist. The areas involved are about 0.1 acre on Lake Palestine and 0.2 acre on Sam Rayburn. Elder has prepared proposals for emergency chemical treatment of the areas if necessary. Those proposals have to be approved by the controlling authorities, and treatment could not begin for at least two weeks. “We will continue to search more areas on both lakes,” said Rick Ott, a TPWD fisheries biologist in Tyler. “We ask that people look for the plant and call us if they see it. Boaters should remove all plant material from their boats and trailers before leaving the ramp every time they go to the lake. Place any plants in trash cans or dumpsters so they cannot be washed back into the lake.” It is illegal to possess or transport giant salvinia. Possession or transport of giant salvinia or other prohibited aquatic vegetation in Texas is a Class C misdemeanor punishable by a fine of up to $500 per plant. Kenneth Kay was conducting a creel survey at the lake’s only boat ramp when he observed massive amounts of plants floating on the water immediately after an angler launched his boat. Kay identified two prohibited non-native plants, water hyacinth and giant salvinia. Kay immediately gathered as many plants as he could and notified the TPWD Inland Fisheries biologist in charge of the lake, Tim Bister, and Harrison County game wardens. TPWD personnel removed approximately 100 pounds of invasive plants. The game wardens issued the angler a citation. The angler stated that he had been fishing at Caddo Lake the previous day and named the ramp he used. That ramp is posted with a sign warning anglers of the presence of giant salvinia and stating that it is against the law to transport the plant. We will also keep other local law enforcement agencies informed. Gaggles of vehicles at bridges over rivers and creeks. People wearing heavy jackets with shorts. Those signs point to two things. Mother Nature is waking from her winter slumber, and the white bass are beginning their spawning runs. Spring isn’t here yet, and Mother Nature will be burrowing back under the covers from time to time for a nap, but white bass fishing will only get hotter and hotter for the next several months. Thousands of migrating white bass stack up in the deep pool below the natural dam, along with smallmouth buffalo, freshwater drum, catfish, gar and crappie. We hooked all six species, but the buffalo and gar broke our four-pound-test line every time. We landed white bass up to 2.4 pounds as well as a couple of 1.5-pound white crappie. The Sabine River is arguably the best white bass fishery in Texas. Sabine white bass are typically larger than those found elsewhere—the water body record is 3.9 pounds. The reason lies downstream: Toledo Bend Reservoir. “Toledo Bend is kind of an inland ocean with tremendous numbers of white bass and lots of food for them to eat,” said Mike Ryan of Marshall, a former fisheries biologist with Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. “The Sabine is a long river system with excellent habitat all the way up to Gladewater. We get high concentrations of fish in the river in the spring.” White bass need moving water to spawn, so they move into streams as the weather starts to warm—about the time redbud trees start to bloom. That’s a signal to get out your ultralight fishing gear and go fishing. White bass will bite on live minnows or a variety of small plastic lures on a red jighead. White and chartreuse seem to be the best colors. The fish can be finicky feeders, so experiment with presentation and watch people who are catching fish to see what they are doing. This month starts the prespawn and the beginning of the spawn for Lake Fork. This means big fish chances for the shallow water angler will sky rocket, which attracts large crowds of anglers to the lake looking for that fish of a lifetime. With the fish moving in shallow there will be many different techniques and baits that will produce fish during the course of the month. Start off by looking for shallow water spawning areas from half way back in the creeks, to all the way to where the creek channels dry up. Look for the areas that might have a creek running close to the flat that might have some other type of cover such as timber or grass. Once you have located an area, try working the area with a quick moving bait like a crawfish colored lipless crank bait, shallow running crank baits, spinner baits, or a Texas rigged Gary Yamamoto Swim Senko. If you work an area over and find a few active fish, go back over the area with a slower moving bait like a 5 inch Gary Yamamoto Senko rigged weightless, a light Texas rigged Yamamoto Lizard, a Yamamoto Kut Tail worm rigged wacky style with a insert weight added to the head. Work these baits around the targeted area until you feel like you have caught the active fish in that area. This will be a great way to pick up good numbers and some good quality fish throughout the month. For those anglers looking for that fish of a life time, I would suggest staying around the creek channel bends in 6 to 14 feet of water, with a half ounce rigged Gary Yamamoto Lizard on a Carolina rig or a Strike Works Tackle Wood Jig with a matching Yamamoto Craw. For those sight fishermen, this month will be your start. Sometime in the month of march they will start to bed up and start building a nest. Rig up with a good pair of polarized sunglasses, a pretty stiff rod, and some good line and get after it. I like to keep several different baits with me for beds including a craw, a lizard, a tube, and a jig. I will switch colors based on how the fish act to the baits when presented. Remember, its all about aggravating the fish, so keep the bait around the nest or fish as much as possible. Another tip is to practice your flipping and pitching before you get on the lake. It will make it so much easier. I still have some Spring dates open if you are interested in a professional Lake Fork Guide Trip. Give me a call at (903)-216-1867 or (903)-7653980 and I will be happy to help, or answer any questions that you may have. You can also catch me at www.fishinlakefork.com and email me- from there. Manasco was catching a lot of small fish Sunday, February 24, in four feet of water in a shallow creek in the back of a cove when a 13.75-pound largemouth took his green sixinch ZOOM stick worm. The big female appeared to have already spawned yet still measured 20.5 inches in girth and 27.5 inches in length. She became the fourth Budweiser ShareLunker to come from Toledo Bend Reservoir and number 443 in the program. Lake Fork Area News 903-885-7223 Email: Despite coming more than a month after the first entry on January 13, Manasco’s fish is not the latest second fish in a season. That distinction belongs to ShareLunker No. 10, caught by Bill Lynn on February 26, 1988, following a fish caught by Troy Johnson on January 15. The Budweiser ShareLunker program is made possible through support from Anheuser-Busch, Inc. Since 1991, Anheuser-Busch, in partnership with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation, has contributed millions of dollars in funding to support conservation causes and fishing, hunting and outdoor recreation programs in Texas. Our desire was to create a family atmosphere rather than just a hard core bunch of guys out to win a fishing contest. We have meals and fellowship for the entire family before each event. Granted, the contestants in our tournaments all have the desire and drive to win but they know having fun and being with the family is every bit as important as taking home a first place prize.” Says Bass Boats & Pontoon Boat Rentals Mon. - Sat. 7am to 6pm During Season Complete RV Service & Repair Mon. - Fri. 8am to 5pm •Set-up & Leveling • Deck Building • RV & Boat Washing & Detail “All Your RV Needs” 903-765-3209 4340 N. TNTC’s first tournament was held this past December at Lake Lavon, with 39 teams competing- the new tournament trail hit the ground running with contestants coming from as far away as San Antonio. The most recent tournament was held at Lake Tawakoni where the size and numbers of fish weighed in was no less than awesome. Forty Five teams competed and the event was won by Sam Morris and Thomas Cortez with a 5 fish stringer that weighed 211 pounds, Sam’s 67.5 pound blue took big fish. The top three places were taken by teams that weighed in over 200 pounds of catfish, which equates to fish averaging over 40 pounds apiece! Catfish tournament trails such as NTTC with a positive, family oriented agenda, are making giant steps in introducing the world to tournament catfish angling. The Conservation Season began several years ago in efforts to keep the snow goose population in check. The gregarious birds have been decimating their nesting ground on the Tundra in Alaska and Canada. Geese pull grasses up to get to the roots and hundreds of acres of their nesting grounds have become void of native grasses. Conservation Season hunts can provide some exciting shooting. Granted, late season snow geese can be challenging to call and decoy within shotgun range, but with regulations such as the use of electronic callers, unplugged shotguns, no limit on birds harvested and extended shooting hours, hunters have a much better chance of success. I remember my first hunt during this conservation season several years ago with waterfowl guide David Cox with Palmetto Guide Service. David had been guiding goose hunts on ranches on the Katy and Garwood Prairies along the Texas coast for years. We set out several hundred silhouette and full body decoys and when the local population of snow geese heard the recording of thousands of what they thought were their kind being blasted through speakers from Cox’s boom box, they were quick to set their wings and glide within shotgun ranch. We enjoyed several hours of shooting with wave after wave of birds coming to our decoy spread and electronic calls. Not all late hunts go so well. Cox is quick to point out that after being hunted from Canada to the Texas Coast, snow geese can be extremely difficult to decoy but, if everything is done correctly and Mother Nature provides a little wind to keep the decoy spread moving, shooting is often excellent. “We hunt flocks of birds on several big Ranches and I’ve found that being flexible is the key to good hunts during the conservation season. Most of our shooting is over green fields of rye grass this time of year and sometimes, the birds move from field to field with little notice. We have to remain mobile and ready to pull up and move with the birds. This time of year, when shooting gets slow, my guides and I will scout and find a concentration of birds, plan a way to get our hunters in without spooking them and enjoy some pass shooting. It’s all about being in the right place at the right time and that’s accomplished by lots of scouting.” Says Cox. For a late season snow goose hunt, contact Cox at 936-2919602 or visit www.palmettoguideservice.com GOOD EATING- Snow geese breast are excellent eating when marinated in a 50-50 solution of Coke and Soy Sauce, with a little garlic powder, then wrapped with bacon and grilled over hot hardwood coals. I like to butterfly the breast halves, stuff them with sausage, wrap with bacon and slow smoke for a couple of hours. Goose breast fajitas are also excellent eating when marinated in your favorite fajita seasoning then cooked quickly in olive oil with fresh garlic. Every two or three months, we would spend several days camping on the shores of a little lake in southeast Oklahoma, setting trotlines for catfish and catching bass from our homemade wooden boat. Dad had his little truck rigged with all the conveniences. With a portable canvas awning to keep the contents (and us) dry, fold down tables with Coleman Stoves and even a sink, we enjoyed camping at its finest, at least for the era. Recently, my wife and I joined some friends and visited the RV show in Ft. Worth where we were exposed to all the latest innovations in camping, now often referred to as RV ing! Campers, if you can call a $100,000 RV a ‘camper’, have come a long way! Today’s fifth wheelers, when set up and the extensions opened up, are actually very roomy and comfortable little homes. Granted, not all the RV’s available today come with so hefty a price tag, there are pop up campers and even tent campers that attach to the bed of trucks that are much more affordable. And, yes, many folks still do their camping the old fashioned way: in tents. After getting a good feel for what is available today and doing a cost comparison of the different models, we later purchased our first big RV, a 37 foot fifth wheel that I plan to keep on our property to serve as a guest house. We live on several acres with plenty of trees and whoever spends the night in our new unit can consider themselves ‘camping’ without the hassle of towing. Towing a unit down the road that’s as big as a small river barge is not my idea of fun, but that’s just me. Besides, I am not prepared to purchase a $40,000 truck big enough to tow our new trailer, nor am I prepared for six or eight miles per gallon fuel consumption. Imagine a 500 mile trip towing such a vehicle costing close to $200 in fuel, ONE WAY! Before chunking down a hefty piece of change for your RV, it’s advisable to give consideration to several factors that will become important when you actually take delivery. Do you have a vehicle heavy and with enough Continued on page 22 Calvary Temple RV’s have come a long way from this thirty year old ‘deer camp’ camper the author’s son is standing beside. If the answer is yes, then, have you thought about actually towing a vehicle that is very apt to cause your miles per gallon to drop at least in half? If money is not an object, have you given thought to towing a ten thousand pound RV through heavy traffic? Would you be more comfortable driving a motor home that you simply drive to your destination and, bingo, you’re home! These are all questions that you should consider before signing on the dotted line and investing in your new ‘home away from home’. Another consideration is whether to purchase a new or used unit. New RV’s, just like cars and trucks, depreciate the moment you pull them off the lot. We did a lot of cost comparison and looking and finally de- cided on purchasing a unit that was a couple years old, but in excellent condition. We finally bought from a large, reputable RV dealer but we also looked at several units offered by individuals. After sorting out the pros and cons, we felt more comfortable buying an ‘almost new’ unit from a very reputable RV dealership. We also purchased an extended warranty to cover anything that might go wrong with the unit. After all, what do I know about making repairs to a complex heating or air conditioning system or the hydraulic jacks that level the unit? Even our ‘almost new’ luxury RV was a sizeable investment and the last thing I wanted to do was use it for six months then look at a repair bill of several thousand dollars. RV’s have come a long, long way since I was a youngster camping in that old rig of my Dad’s but on I still find myself camping in tents and even old barns on hunting property from time to time. Camping is not all about luxury. To my way of thinking, spending time in the outdoors with family and friends, setting around a campfire, watching the glowing embers after a great day in the outdoors is the essence of camping and I hope this will never change. So, whether your budget and desires are suited to tent camping or a luxury RV with a triple digit price tag, consider devoting some time to enjoying the great outdoors. There’s lots to enjoy out there in the natural world and no better way to experience it than with the mobility provided by bringing your home along with you! If so, maybe it’s time to head outside for a weekend and become an outdoors family. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s Outdoors Family weekend workshops give families with children between the ages of 5 and 12 a chance to explore the great Continued on page 23 Photo courtesy of Jimmy Everett www.lakeforkareanews.com 903-885-7223 Outdoor Family Workshops Continued from page 22 outdoors and learn skills like camping, fishing, kayaking and archery. “It offers today’s families an opportunity to learn very basic outdoor skills that they may have never been introduced to or that they may have learned way back in their scouting days,” said program coordinator Ashley Mathews. “The learning is so easy and fun that there is little chance of embarrassment.” The program began as an outgrowth of the successful Becoming an Outdoors-Woman program. Demand has grown so much that TPWD has scheduled seven additional workshops for 2008. Mathews attributes the increased interest in the program to the public’s growing recognition of our increasing disconnect from nature as a society. “More and more people are starting to understand that a disconnection between our children, ourselves and our natural environment is harmful to us mentally and physically,” she said. “People are trying to find easier ways to expose themselves and their kids to outdoor activities. Time in the outdoors can really help children with Call Today To Book Your Trip On Lake Fork Jimmy Everett’s Guide Service 903-216-1867 www.fishinlakefork.com attention issues, and provide a setting for them to decompress and be imaginative.” The workshops typically begin Saturday morning and last through Sunday noon. Usually, six to eight classes are offered throughout the weekend. Families are able to rank in order of preference which three classes they would like to attend while registering. All classes are geared toward absolute beginners. Fees for the course are set by the local parks and recreation departments with which TPWD partners, but average $150 for a family of four. Meals and recreational and safety equipment necessary to participate are provided. Below is the schedule for the spring and summer 2008 workshops: * March 29-30 — Temple, TX * April 5-6 — Huntsville, TX * April 5-6 — Kyle, TX * April 12-13 — Missouri City, TX * May 17-18 — San Antonio, TX * June 3-4 — Tyler, TX * September 27-28 — Georgetown, TX For registration information contact Ashley Mathews at: [email protected]. tx.us or (512) 970-9247. Almost a Lunker Page 23 TPWD Schedules seven sites for additional trout stocking AUSTIN, Texas — Trout anglers get an extra bonus this year as the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department will stock additional hatcheryreared rainbow trout at seven sites from Feb. 22 to March 7. TPWD has stocked upwards of 275,000 trout at 115 sites this season. TPWD has been stocking rainbow trout each winter since the 1970s, providing Texans a simple and economical opportunity to go fishing. Catching these hungry fish can be easy, making the experience ideal for both novice anglers and kids. The fish will bite almost immediately after stocking and typically will take a variety of baits, from whole kernel canned corn or commercial soft bait to artificial flies and even small spinner baits. A valid Texas freshwater fishing package is required to fish for trout. Youth ages 16 and younger and all anglers fishing from the bank in state parks are exempt from the fishing package requirement. Schedule of supplemental rainbow trout stockings: New Braunfels (San Antonio area) * Feb. 22, Canyon Tailrace — 2,215 fish * March 4, Canyon Tailrace — 2,215 fish (plus extra if available) Graford (Abilene area) * Feb. 22, Possum Kingdom Tailrace — 2,000 fish * Feb. 27, Possum Kingdom Tailrace — 2,000 fish Lewisville (Dallas/ Fort Worth area) * Feb. 29, Lake Lewisville Tailrace — 2,000 fish * March 7, Lake Lewisville Tailrace — 2,000 fish (plus extra if available) Llano (Austin area) * Feb. 27, Llano River, Grenwelge Continued on page 24 BENT TREE MOTEL 903-473-0061 381 LENNON DRIVE HIGHWAY 69 NORTH EMORY, TX. 75440 2 Guide Jimmy Everett with a 12.36 pound bass caught in February on Lake Fork. That was probably one of the toughest month’s that I have ever had trying to catch some catfish! And it’s not like I didn’t try to put my customers on some fish. We only managed 29 cats for the month of February, which was my all time record low. The weather was really bad it seemed every time the boat went out. The wind was blowing from the North it seemed all month and made it tough fishing. The fish were scattered from 18 ft. to 27 ft. of water. Water temperature has been in the low 50’s. One day it try’s to warm up then a cold front comes in and drops it back down. A special thanks to Jeff Kirkwood, who was nice enough to come out of his way and give me a tow to our ramp. I had some hydraulic lift problems on my pontoon boat the other day and could not get the motor to go back down in the water. My neighbor Jerry Holland and I were floating south from the Hwy. 515 bridge in the middle of the lake. It was real foggy that day 903-885-7223 with a light mist falling. There was one other boat crappie fishing under the bridge but would not respond to my cry’s for help. Not many boaters know that it’s the law to help a stranded boat in need for some help. I have towed many boat’s before and have been towed a few times myself. Jeff Kirkwood, who had a customer with him came to our rescue and gave us a tow. It took only about 20 minutes to get us to our ramp. I offered Jeff some money, but he wouldn’t take it. Thanks again Jeff for going out of your way. March should bring us some warmer weather but it also usually pretty windy. Just remember wind doesn’t effect the fish, it effects the fisherman. I’ve caught some really nice fish in the wind when it’s not coming out of the North. The catfish should start to be moving up shallow in late March. I’ve already cleaned some with eggs so they will get shallow just like bass and crappie do. Until next month be safe out on the water and I hope you catch the big one.
