Toot! Toot! Musical Instruments in Clay with
Jane Hill and Students 4.104, 3:00 - 3:55
Elementary Art Teacher Jane Hill and some Upper Elementary students will be
presenting a demonstration on clay ocarinas. The students will be on hand to
play their whistles and work on a few new simple ones, and explain how the
whistle process works.
Upcycled Art Activity with Debra Martinez Deck, 3:00 - 4:55
Primary Guide Debra Martinez will lead participants in upcycled art projects
and help them make a small project to take home.

Young children can gather in the loft for a cozy story time led by MS/HS students.
Moving with Ms. Lea Loft, 4:40 - 5:15
Come join Young Children’s Community teacher Lea Comte, M.S., R-DMT, in
an interactive experiential session that explores the integration of Physical
Education (PE) and Dance/Movement Therapy (DMT)! This physical exploration
is open to families and participants of all ages. Come move your body, have
fun, and learn about the important role of movement in your child’s physical,
social, emotional, and cognitive development. *Warning* Dancing, movement,
and silliness WILL be involved.

Ninth grader Hannah Levit will give a presentation explaining how geographic
luck shapes subsequent history.
The Publication Process: Work Like Any Other with
Virginia Reeves 1.102, 3:40 - 3:55
Head of English Virginia Reeves will briefly describe the writing, revision, and
submission process that led to the acquisition of her novel Work Like Any Other
by publishers in the US and abroad, and she will read an excerpt from her book.
The Fruits of a Good Deed with
Manon Castillo 1.204, 4:00 - 4:15
Twelfth grader Manon Castillo talks about the holocaust, her relationship to the
event, and the chain of good deeds that come from a good humane action.
Leonardo da Vinci—A Man Before His Time
with Arden Egerton 4.202, 4:00 - 4:15
Leonardo da Vinci was a painter…and so much more. Fourth grader Arden
Egerton will share some highlights from all areas of his work—his research into the
human body, his flying machines and other inventions, his exploration of math,
and of course, his paintings. She’ll also describe her own experiments inspired by
da Vinci, and share her homemade paint and painting, created in the style of a
Renaissance apprentice.
Middle School students will present a collection of poetry and readings inspired
from Out of the Dust by Karen Hesse and life during The Dust Bowl.
What I Learned from the Game of YOLO with
Mike Franz 4.104, 4:00 - 4:35
YOLO (or, “You Only Live Once”) is a yearlong game played in Mike Franz’s
government and economics class. The game simulates a real-world economy
and political arena in which each week of the school year is equal to one year
of real life. Within the game, students learn to invest, buy and sell, operate
businesses, run for office, and save for retirement, but Mike thinks the person
who has learned the most from this game might just be him. In this presentation,
he will discuss what he has learned from YOLO.
Model United Nations with Khabele Students
4.201, 4:20 - 4:35
Model United Nations is an authentic simulation of the UN General Assembly,
UN Security Council, or other multilateral body, which introduces students
to the world of diplomacy, negotiation, and decision making. Model UN
Conferences are held across the globe. At Model UN, students step into the
shoes of ambassadors of countries that are members of the UN, from Argentina
to Zimbabwe. The students, better known as “delegates,” debate current issues
on the organization’s vast agenda. They prepare draft resolutions, plot strategy,
negotiate with supporters and adversaries, resolve conflicts, and navigate the
UN’s rules of procedure – all in the interest of resolving problems that affect the
world. Members of the Khabele Model UN Club will explain how it all works.
Model UN is open to high school students in 9 - 12th grade.
The Durant Project with Ryan Phillips 1.102, 4:40 - 5:15
In 1930, Will Durant wrote a letter to more than 100 famous and not-so-famous
people describing the current state of the world and then asking, “Spare me a
moment to tell me what meaning life has for you, what keeps you going, what
help—if any—religion gives you, what are the sources of your inspiration and your
energy, what is the goal or motive force of your toil, where you find consolations
and your happiness, where, in the last resort, your treasure lies.” He collected the
responses he received from everyone from Gandhi to death row inmates into a
small book titled On the Meaning of Life. Head of Middle School Ryan Phillips is
currently working on a project in his free time updating Durant’s experiment. He
will share where he is and where he hopes to go in this presentation.

Students from our Elementary Music program, Middle School Music class, and all
Jazz Bands will perform throughout the event. See schedule for details.
This session explores the making of Khabele’s second annual literary journal, The
Rio Grande. We will walk you through submissions, editing, design, and layout,
as well as the art of hand binding.
Violent Crime & the Criminal Justice System
with Abby Canning 1.102, 5:20 - 5:55
During her Project Week, 8th grader Abby Canning interviewed a variety of
people involved in different aspects of crime and criminal justice. She had the
unique opportunity to interview offenders of violent crimes as well as judges,
forensic psychologists, attorneys, criminal profilers, and members of the FBI with
specialty in the Behavioral Analysis Unit.
Short Story Illustration with Gage Wenderski 1.204, 6:00 - 6:15
For Project Week, 8th grader Gage Wenderski illustrated and printed a
collection of stories written by his friend, Dave White. Starting as bedtime stories
Dave told his daughters, these stories have come a long way to what they are
now. These stories create a painting of the homey island realm and the long
disputes of its inhabitants.

This marketplace selling handmade goods, student art, and other miscellaneous
products will raise money and awareness of The School Fund and Khabele’s
1-4-1 Program.

Fifth grader Ella Knudsen will present about the history of acting, facts about acting,
methods used by actors, and the differences between acting in theatre vs. film.

The Art of Selling Music with Nick Fichter 1.204, 4:20 - 4:55
This presentation from 11th grader Nick Fichter will cover the difficult and
tiresome process that local musicians go through to make and sell their music.
It will shed light on just how much work needs to be put in and facing the
challenges of getting it heard by audiences and taking all criticisms.
Little Shop of Horrors Sneak Peek with
Musical Cast Under the Studio, 5:00 - 5:15
Khabele High School students present a preview of this year’s spring musical,
Little Shop of Horrors. Gather under the Studio to get a sneak peak of the
performance!
Jazz Piano Solo with Sam Lankford Under the studio, 5:20 - 5:35
Eleventh grader Sam Lankford will present an interpretive jazz piano solo.
Stage Fright band performance Under the Studio, 6:20 - 6:35
Stage Fright, a rock band, will be performing music off of their first album
(Stage Fright). The band is influenced by Led Zeppelin, Pixies, Iggy Pop and
the Stooges, The White Stripes, and later work of The Beatles, and features
Dorian Domi on guitar and vocals, Max Womack on bass and vocals, and
Dominic Mauro on drums. Come listen to some good music and see a new and
upcoming band for their first performance!

An Exploration of a Homemade Voltaic Pile
with Gus Begert 2.101, 3:20 - 3:35
The Voltaic Pile was the first battery ever made, invented in 1800 by Alessandro
Volta. Second grader Gus Begert made his own homemade version of it, and
researched the variables that affect the voltage and current it produces. He
found that increasing the number of elements in the Voltaic Pile increases the
voltage, whilst arranging them in parallel instead of series increases the current.
Changing the materials of the electrodes affects both current and voltage.

FIRST® LEGO® League Elementary Team Demonstration
For his monthly homework project, 1st grader Oscar Egerton created a game
called MythicWars. The game pits mythical creatures against each other—
Chupacabra vs. Loch Ness monster! Werewolf vs. Mermaid! Who will be the
victor? Oscar will share the rules of the game, show his model, and talk about
his plans and goals for the game.
How to Build a Quadcopter with Harry Ziegler 4.201, 4:00 - 4:15
How do quadcopters work? What goes into building one? In this presentation, 7th
grader Harry Ziegler will talk about how he built a 3-pound, 3D printed quadcopter.
Middle School Robotics with
Thom Gibson and Students 2.101, 4:00 - 4:55
Middle School students at Khabele have many avenues to learn the ins and
out of getting robots to do what you want them to do. Come see these young
computer scientists show their skills. Ask them about their thought processes in
the programs they wrote to get the robots to tell jokes, run an obstacle course,
trace various shapes, and much more!

The Upper Elementary Lego League Team will demonstrate the team’s
robot and project presentation that won 5th place in the Central Texas
Championships of the FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL) international competition.
Quadcopters: Physics & Construction with Theo Tolan
and Will Jeffe 4.202, 5:20 - 5:35
Sixth graders Theo Tolan and Will Jeffe will show off their hand-built quadcopter
and talk about the physics that enable it to fly. They will talk about how they
built it and why, and then they will fly it!
Cracking the Code of Ciphers with Berkeley Nylund
1.204, 5:40 - 5:55
Fifth grader Berkeley Nylund will present on the history and use of ciphers. The
art of creating and deciphering coded messages is called Cryptography.
Ciphers can be used by soldiers, secret agents, or just your average kid. They
can be simple, quick, and easily deciphered. Or they can be confusing,
complex, and nearly impossible to crack. Come learn more, and crack a code
at the end of the presentation!
Khabele IT Director Jason Lewiss will talk about his hobby of cubing. He will show a
variety of cubes and talk about techniques, theories, design, and speedcubing.
A World of Science with Isabelle Hodge
All You Need is Love and the Pythagorean Theorem
with Patrick Frasier 2.101, 6:00 - 6:15
Are you curious about the world? Do you love to answer interesting questions? If
yes, you may have the makings for a successful scientist. Isabelle Hodge had the
opportunity to interview many leading researchers in the California Bay Area and
learn what it is like to work in science professionally. Her experiences have been
compiled into a documentary that will be shown and discussed. If you are interested
in science as a career or are just curious, please come to this presentation!
Mathematics should be elegant and aesthetically pleasing. Oftentimes, to
accomplish initially daunting proofs, all you need is the infamous Pythagorean
Theorem and a little bit of algebraic manipulation. Come learn more about it
from Khabele math teacher Patrick Frasier!
Balloons and Their Impact on Marine Environments with
Greyson Offerman 4.104, 5:00 - 5:35
Sixth grader Greyson Offerman will screen his short documentary about
the devastating effects of balloons on marine environments and common
misconceptions and company cover-ups. He will present what pollution can do
and how we can help: spreading awareness, cleaning up pollution, maintaining
safe balloon practices and disposals, and fun alternatives to balloons.

Tenth grader Rishi Salem will present information about the difficulties faced by
the visually impaired and a device to attempt to help them.

In today’s world, modern conveniences and grocery stores may make it hard to
realize from where our food actually comes. This presentation from 7th grader
Miles Bilbe will illustrate why it is important to grow your own food and how to do
so in a limited space.

Lucid Dreaming with Kate Canning

Lucid dreaming is where you become conscious during your dreams and may
be able to influence a dream’s path. Seventh grader Kate Canning will talk
about the history, benefits, and methods to do it.
Tiny House Design with Grace Jung

Ninth grader Grace Jung offers a glimpse into her Project Week, which involved
researching and learning how to build and design a tiny house.
Service
Seventh grader Quinn Erickson visited northern Thailand during Project Week
and Spring Break. While there, he volunteered at The Elephant Nature Park,
where he spent a day feeding, bathing, and interacting with rescued Asian
elephants. Quinn will be presenting photos from his trip and will be talking about
efforts to help protect domesticated elephants in Thailand. He looks forward to
telling you how you can help!

Life’s a Glitch with Dana Hutchins
This year for Project Week, in partnership with international NGO Caring for
Cambodia, Campbell Erickson visited the developing country of Cambodia.
Through a comprehensive photography project, Campbell hopes to build
awareness and raise money for schools operating in Cambodia. Stop by to see
photos, hear stories, and meet the NGO Caring for Cambodia!
