Schuler opens hot
stamping centre
Schuler has opened its new
research and demonstration
centre for hot stamping at
its headquarters in Göppingen,
Germany. At the so-called ‘Hot
Stamping TechCenter’, the
company will be showing its
customers applications for the
future of lightweight vehicle
construction. Schuler has
invested some €6.5m in the line,
which is equipped with hydraulic
press, roller hearth furnace and
automation. It was developed at
the company’s Waghäusel site.
In the hot stamping (or press
hardening) process, sheet steel
is heated to 930°C, cooled and
finally hardened in the subsequent
forming stage. This enables
the production of light but rigid
vehicle parts. Due to the growing
requirements for passenger
protection and the need to reduce
emissions, demand is expected to
grow in the coming years.

Name change
Gleason has announced
a new name and
operating structure
for Distech Systems. The
automation business will be
named Gleason Automation
Systems and operate as
a division of The Gleason
Works. Originally acquired
in May 2014, the renamed
Gleason Automation Systems
designs and manufactures

including automated tray
stacking systems that integrate
secondary operations such as
washing, inspection, gauging,
marking and part tracking. The

TWI friction stir
welds ODS steel
The Welding Institute
(TWI) has successfully
joined a type of steel
alloy considered impossible to
weld using conventional fusion
methods. As part of its core
research programme into the
friction stir welding of steel, TWI
has welded a number of samples
of oxide dispersion-strengthened
(ODS) steels. These special
alloys have been developed to
deliver excellent strength and
creep performance at elevated
temperatures, making them
suitable for applications in nuclear
reactors and power generation
equipment, where they are
exposed to extreme heat.
A number of samples
of MA956, embedded with
thermocouples to monitor
process temperatures, were
successfully welded at TWI’s
Technology Centre in Yorkshire.
These samples are now
undergoing extensive testing at
Manchester University to assess
their performance in hostile
environments, including their
susceptibility to irradiation damage.

Newcastle-under-Lyme based KMF Group
has acquired precision engineering business
Greenway Pepper in a move which will help
to realise the company’s growth ambitions. The
acquisition will see Greenway Pepper renamed
as KMF Precision Engineering to fit with group
branding. KMF Group already consists of: KMF
Precision Sheet Metal, based in the UK; and KMF
Precision Sheet Metal, based in Slovakia. Now, KMF

The Starrag Group has
launched its Sonic Eye
for the automatic in-cycle
measurement of workpiece floor
thickness when milling aluminium
workpieces. The device is said to
dispense with the measurement
of floor thicknesses as a separate,
off-machine process (and thus
eliminates the need to relocate
workpieces if further machining
is required), therefore reducing
overall lead-times.
The Sonic Eye can be
exchanged like a standard tool
from the tool magazine. All
measured data is saved and made
available for documentation and
later machining operations.

a HSK A63/80 spindle interface
– which has spring suspension

Weld testing for safetycritical applications
To assist research into
optimal procedures for
welding aero engine
fan blades, nuclear pressure
vessels and other safety-critical
fabrications, a new material testing
capability has been developed at
the Open University (OU) in Milton
Keynes. The correlation-based
technique uses digital images
to measure spatially resolved
deformation of test samples at
elevated temperatures under
vacuum. This method allows
material property data of rapidly
oxidising materials to be obtained
at temperatures up to 900°C. The
data can then be used to predict
in-service deformation behaviour.
Housed at the OU’s Department
of Engineering and Innovation, the
test equipment comprises a Zwick
Roell slow strain rate universal
testing machine combined with a
Severn Thermal Solutions vacuum
furnace. A flat sample is extracted
from the weld section under
investigation by wire erosion, with

is a compact profile projector that
the company says has a number
of advanced features. The vertical
benchtop optical system features
a 300 mm diameter screen that
can be fully viewed to the edge,
with crosshairs, calibrations marks
and overlay clips making it suitable
for the rapid inspection of small
components.
With an integrated hood, the
Starrett VB300 features an allmetal construction designed for
rigidity, accuracy and longevity.
Flat parts up to 5 kg can be
accommodated on the 225 x 225
mm work stage, which features
a 155 x 155 mm toughened
glass insert and 100 x 100 mm
of measurement travel. Starrett
says that a manual focus range of
100 mm ensures every detail of
the component being measured
remains in sharp relief.
Engineers, technicians and
operators can simply ‘plug and
play’ the VB300, which comes as
standard with an integral DRO
system that allows X and Y linear
axis measurements and angular
measurements to be made on
the weld extending along the width
of the gauge length. This produces
a cross-weld sample featuring
parent material at either end, with
the weldment and heat affected
zone (HAZ) in the centre (in the
field of view).
The chosen photographic
equipment is a Nikon Nikkor 200
mm f/4 IF-ED micro-lens connected
via a bellows to a DS-Qi2 low noise,
monochrome microscopy digital
camera that transmits test data in
real time to a laptop via a USB3
cable. The camera and software
was supplied by Nikon Metrology,
and the OU says that the solution
was one-quarter of the price of a
dedicated scientific camera with
on-board random access memory
for storing data.

by the Nikon DS-Qi2 camera.

vision measurement probe
for use with the Revo fiveaxis measurement system on
CMMs. The RVP probe increases
the multi-sensor capability of Revo
by adding non-contact inspection
to the existing touch-trigger,
high speed, tactile scanning
and surface finish measurement
capability of the system.
For certain applications, noncontact inspection provides clear
advantages over traditional tactile
probing techniques. Thin sheet
metal parts or components with
large numbers of holes as small
as 0.5 mm, and parts which are
not suited to tactile measurement,
can be fully inspected with the
RVP system. RVP also gives
improvements in throughput and
CMM capability by utilising the fiveaxis motion and infinite positioning
provided by the Revo head.
The RVP system comprises a
probe and a range of modules that
are automatically interchangeable
with all other probe options
available for Revo. Data from
multiple sensors is automatically
referenced to a common datum.
This flexibility means that the
optimum tool can be selected to
inspect a wide range of features,
all on one CMM platform.

Real-time monitoring
of AM melt pools
EOS is launching a process
monitoring and analysis
system called Eostate
MeltPool Monitoring. An add-on
to the EOS M 290 DMLS (direct
metal laser sintering) system, the
tool is said to pave the way for
complete part traceability as well
as automated surveillance and
analysis of the melt pool during
the DMLS build process for every
spot, layer and part.
With Eostate MeltPool, EOS
expands its existing portfolio of
solutions for AM by adding online
monitoring, ensuring even greater
transparency of the complex build
process. The technology therefore
targets R&D and manufacturing
customers with demanding quality
requirements.
Eostate MeltPool observes
the light emitted by the melt pool.
The key elements are a pair of
photodiodes located on- and
off-axis, a camera adapter, a
specialised signal amplifier and
spectral filters to separate process
After the market introduction
of the MS-TS and ML-T
balances, Mettler Toledo is
pleased to complete the renewal
of the company’s portfolio with the
launch of its entry level balance,
the ME-T. Designed to meet
all essential needs, the ME-T
is said to offer a reliable, high
performance weighing cell and an
intuitive 4.5'' colour TFT screen, as
well as three interface connections
for easy data handling. It is
suitable for day-to-day weighing
in any manufacturing environment
where value for money has high
priority.
Built-in applications and an
intuitive user interface make the
ME-T convenient and easy to
use, says Mettler Toledo, even
for untrained operators. Clear
indication is given if sample weights
are over or under tolerance.
Results, including statistical
evaluations, can be sent directly to
a printer or transmitted wirelessly
to a PC, eliminating transcription by
hand and the associated potential
for error.
ME-T balances come as
standard with the Electromagnetic
Force Compensation (EMFC)
weighing cell and overload
light from reflected laser light.
The associated software offers
automatic data error correction
and real-time process visualisation
and evaluation. For data analysis,
the Eostate MeltPool Analysis
Toolbox visualises data in 2D or
3D mappings and enables the
evaluation of indication clusters.
The tool works based on three
advanced algorithms to obtain
different data interpretations.
From the collected data,
conclusions for the resulting
component quality can be drawn.
For this, customers define
corresponding parameters (MPM
parameters) using the Eostate
MeltPool Analysis Toolbox and
can set thresholds according to
particular quality requirements.
Live monitoring during the build
process of a real part helps
to automatically identify error
indications based on these MPM
parameters.
