Introduction
Short animated and experimental films are something
of a tradition in Croatia. In our eyes, financing them
is a sort of patriotic duty, no less important than the
need to systematically support short fiction films and
documentaries. In recent years, the effects of technological democracy have also changed the way that
short films are created: nowadays, they can emerge
from anywhere and everywhere, generated on the
assembly line of enthusiasm, and turning our old expectations on their head.
This catalogue, therefore, presents a range of titles
diverse to the point of anarchy: short films that are
fresh, vibrant and rebelliously exploratory.
Filmmakers creating short fiction films often examine
personal identity, especially when tangled in a densely
woven web of relationships with family, friends or
lovers. This tendency is particularly strong among
female directors of all generations, working in fiction,
documentary, animated and experimental film, creating works with an astute touch of subtle irony and
humour.
4
Questions about national identity and the recent and
distant past are another important obsession of both
fiction and documentary short films.
Animated film often draws its inspiration from the
avant-garde language of the Zagreb School of Animation, following in its footsteps in an inventive manner
and translating its tradition of innovation into a new
social and technological context. On the other hand,
some filmmakers have broken free from this tradition,
and moved in the opposite direction, using new toys,
such as narration, for instance – something which was
blasphemy to the old masters from Zagreb.
Hybridity is another feature of contemporary short film
in Croatia: the boundaries between genres are becoming increasingly blurred. See, for example, our experimental films, whose filmmakers deal with the universal
ailments of the western world. They are truly experimental in the way they appropriate the different languages
of narrative film, new media, video, digital technology
and graphic design. In doing so, they skilfully adapt them
to their own specific subject matter, while exploring the
boundaries and possibilities of both old and new media.
The Croatian Audiovisual Centre provides systematic
support to this aforementioned flood of new short
films. In our view, short film production is far more
than a mere talent incubator for longer films that are
yet to be realised; it is a separate, independent form
of cinematic creativity in its own right – and one that
deserves our full attention and support.

Kolak Mirković
2013 | 23’ | hdcam | Colour
Directed by Nikola Ivanda
Mrs. Mirković’s (65) husband just died. This happened
after two years of agonizing and exhausting disease.
Her neighbor, Mr. Kolak (75) has waited a long time for
this moment. In fact he has been in love with her for a
while. Now, nicely dressed, shaved, with perfect hair he
comes knocking on her door to express his condolences. In reality he is trying to seduce her. As if he was
fifteen, Mr. Kolak gathers the strength and pours his
feelings to Mrs. Mirković. Suddenly, a lightning marks
the beginning of a storm and awakens the spirit of her
late husband Petar, whose corpse was taken out of the
apartment less than an hour ago. He appears via the tv
and accuses Kolak of behaving inappropriately towards
his widowed wife. This sparks an argument between
Mrs. Mirković and her dead husband where she pours
in his face everything that she did not have the courage
to confess to him while he was alive. The spirit disappears from the tv, and inspires a weird and funny situation. It is clear that the two neighbors have fallen in love.
As if they were fifteen.

Lilly is not an ordinary girl. Her nights are filled with
horror. Each night a Monster comes into her room
and Lilly cannot ask her parents for help because
she has stopped talking. She can only draw the horrid
Monster. One night Lilly sees a Girl much like herself,
who saves her from falling off the roof, but disappears again. That night the Monster reappears and
Lilly again takes refuge in her imaginary world. In
her imagination, she climbs to safety, to the top of a
construction site ramp. While the Monster attacks her
in her bed, she talks to the Girl who gives her strength.
The Moon sheds light on the Monster. Lilly’s mother
finally finds the strength to confront him.

Boxed | U kutiji
Directed by Nebojša Slijepčević
A stranger walks into a local café where the
customers from a nearby betting shop like to hang
out. He leaves an unusual box with them, asking
them to keep it safe and not to look at what is inside.
Fuelled by boredom and curiosity, they cannot resist
opening the box. When the stranger catches them
in the act, they do not want to admit their guilt. The
unlucky stranger gets beaten up, and his box is
destroyed. While the film makes it clear that what
happens to the stranger is wrong, the audience is also
curious to know what is inside the box. This sense of
complicity between the audience and the aggressors
highlights the ambivalent role of the film’s audience as
they watch the story unfold.

A man, whose relationship is about to fall apart, is
listening to the radio. His partner wakes up because
something has changed: war has entered their lives.

This film tells the unusual story of a father and son
who must catch a lion in order to save themselves
from the approaching war. While setting a trap for the
lion, the father uses role-play to create an imaginary
world that distracts his son from the danger on the
horizon. As the lion’s arrival becomes more and more
imminent the father has to think fast to find a clever
way of tricking the wild beast into the trap. Just as the
father and son are about to come face to face with the
lion, they share a unique emotional experience that
just might help them defeat it. The film is inspired by
true events.

Lust and the Heart | O požudi i srcu
Directed by Stanka Gjurić
Two couples talk about their love lives. The first pair of
lovers are in their twenties; while the second pair have
already stepped into the Third Age. Their views differ
in only one, essential detail. This short film on romantic
themes uses elements of surrealism to question the
very foundation of male-female relationships.

of a commercial. Eighty extras have been hired for the
shoot – one of them is Nikša, the boyfriend of Marina,
the assistantdirector. The producer wants Marina to
make a selection of extras for a crowd scene: the
young, good-looking extras should stand in the front
and the ugly ones should be hidden in the back rows.
Nikša belongs to the second group rather than the

About fifty years into the future, teleportation
is now a common mode of transport in wealthy
countries. Sadly, there are no teleportation stations
in Croatia yet, so people use teleportation stations in
neighbouring countries to travel to far-off destinations.
Then Martina Kraljević hears a radio commercial
advertising Croatia’s first-ever teleportation service.
Martina’s husband Robert has already teleported on
business three times, something she is quite jealous
of. She persuades him to try the new Teleport Zovko
service, together with their pre-teen son and teenage
daughter. The plan is to travel from Zagreb to Vis for a
family holiday – but even the best-laid plans can often
go away…

A naked middle-aged man walks out of the sea and
starts to climb the steep rocks of a deserted island.
Once he passes through an abandoned underground
tunnel, he descends to a big empty sandy beach
where his younger wife and six-year old daughter
are waiting. Their mutual inability to communicate
(the woman refuses to interact with the man, he tries
to cheer her up, the girl is bored with playing in the
sand...) is witnessed by an interested, but troubled,
woman who is fishing in a boat anchored near the
beach. When tension develops into violence, three
members of the family will become two, and finally –
in the open sea – only one person remains, caught in
the trap of their own emotions.

TVZM is a modern love story that tries to connect two
completely different periods in time, in a fun, romantic
way, while referencing and paying homage to the
classic Croatian film Tko pjeva zlo ne misli. We follow
a young couple’s first date and their subsequent
intimate moments in the locations where the original
movie was filmed. TVZM is basically a sequence of
spontaneous events and unpretentious dialogue that
presents the viewer with situations they can relate to.
In addition, the use of film locations from the original
movie helps to blur the lines between reality and
fiction.

Four Dalmatians philosophise about perennial questions such as ‘who do you love more, your mother or
your wife?’ or ‘where is my money?’ Over 300 years
ago, a Greek priest came to the Croatian island of
Krapanj and showed the population how to dive for
sponges. Our protagonists belong to the families
who are still diving for a living, and harvesting natural
sponge from the sea.

A story of a suburb, a neighbourhood, a small house
and a newly built condominium: this is, in essence, the
story of a family and their home, any kind of family in
any kind of system, trying to fight the system. On one
side is one family’s green oasis: a garden with magnolias, fruit trees, rambling roses and a meandering
pathway; and a home, with a grandma and two dogs.
On the other side: a drill, a dredge, a crane, travelling in
the cathartic sky and blocking out the real sky and the
sun that once belonged to the close-knit little fam- ily.
This is the traumatic experience of the construction of
a neighbouring building and one family’s story of a battle with the system – a battle that, ultimately, they lost.

Always Faithful | Uvijek vjerni
2013 | 30’ | DigiBeta | Colour
Directed by Kristijan Milić
The film begins with a brief overview of the family and
professional lives of members of the Independent
Podsused Military Brigade. It is a portrait of their
everyday life. However, the cinematic language hints
at a certain shift from their daily routine – a routine
that could be seen as the quintessential schedule
of the so-called ordinary man. The shift is located
precisely in an unusually loyal connection between the
members of the brigade. The documentary is, at its
heart, a quest for the circumstances and time in which
this feeling and connection were first created.

Fried Shoes and Cocoa Calamari tells the story
of Mia (Milena Kraljević), a beautiful 33-year-old
born with Down’s syndrome. Filmed simply, Mia
holds a microphone and talks about herself, telling
us the mundane details of her life – her favourite
tv programmes, what she does at work, which
colleagues annoy her, the conflicts and triumphs of
her life, her likes and dislikes. Along the way we learn
that she likes to talk to imaginary friends, that she
enjoys eating, that she loves riding her bicycle, that
she hates clipping her nails and that she loves talking
to her boyfriend on the phone. In the very ordinariness
of her happiness, we are challenged to think about
what makes a happy and fulfilled life.

Thirteen-year-old Stella lives in Zagreb. She is
profoundly paralysed and has severe learning
disabilities; she is unable to speak or walk and
relies completely on her uncomplaining parents for
everything. In order to avoid carrying Stella up the
35 steps to their apartment, Stella’s parents ask
their neighbours for permission build a ramp in the
neighbours’ backyard. When the neighbours refuse,
we are shown a glimpse into the lives of the disabled,
how they are at the mercy of those around them,
and how even the most trivial events can have a lifealtering effect.

Salt, Olives, Stone is a socially conscious documentary
film that uses traditional crafts as the inspiration for
its central motifs – salt picking, olive growing and
drywall building. As a counterpoint, it also explores
the detrimental impact of unrestrained mass tourism
in Dalmatia, the authentic, traditional Dalmatia that is
now on the verge of extinction. The film contrasts the
tranquillity and beauty of traditional life in Central and
South Dalmatia, in places untouched by tourism, with
the detrimental influence of mass tourism in the rest
of Dalmatia – marine and coastal pollution, as well as
light and noise pollution. Through exceptional visuals,
and without a single word of commentary, this film is
a beautiful portrayal of a traditional lifestyle that has
coexisted with nature for thousands of years.

Cottage Cheese and Cream | Sir i vrhnje
2013 | 42’ | Video | Colour
Directed by Kristina Leko
Cottage Cheese and Cream is a film essay about
the milkmaids of Zagreb, and about deep crises
of political will and national identity in the period
between 2002 and 2006. Milkmaids are one of the
symbols of Zagreb, but in recent years they have
become an endangered species, due to the economic
turmoil of a society in transition. They may even
become extinct in the very near future, because the
way they produce and sell their product does not meet
European standards for food hygiene. Is it possible for
milkmaids and cottage cheese to join the European
Union? Who are these milkmaids, anyway? Who
should help them survive in the 21st century, and why?
Are they an outdated relic of the past, or would we
miss them if they disappeared?

Plutocracy Croatia investigates the truth behind the
accusations of corruption and collusion that pervade
Croatian politics. Croatia’s progress towards eu accession has raised many questions about the transparency and honesty of the nation’s governance, but news
coverage has been vague and sterile – until now.
Through extensive research and interviews with government insiders, activists, and journalists, Plutocracy
Croatia traces the rise of Croatia’s kleptocratic ruling
class and unveils the corrosive relationships that have
tainted politics, regulatory agencies and the judiciary.

The documentary film My Way is the story of a boy
called Borna Bubalo from Zagreb. Borna is ten and
suffers from an incurable disease, propionic acidemia.
There are only two other children in Croatia with the
same condition. In Europe there are dozens. It is a
metabolic disorder that makes it impossible for Borna
to eat protein-based food, which means he is not
allowed to eat meat, fish, dairy, eggs, soy, legumes,
cereals, pastry, bread, cakes, ice cream or chocolate.
Borna is a very charming child, with big blue eyes and
long blond hair, he is good-humoured most of the
time, but extremely hyperactive. He loves music; he
does not talk, but he sings...

Fibonacci Bread is set in the heart of an urban
landscape, in the sliver of time between yesterday and
tomorrow. Our main character, a bread maker, spends
his nights baking spiral-shaped pastries. In the predawn hours he rides his bicycle, distributing them to
local homeless people. The topography of his dreams
and memories becomes a map for his morning travels
through the labyrinth of the city. His journey will
eventually lead to an encounter with the city’s secret
visitor – a metaphor as large and universal as hunger

This film follows the battle between a small boy and
the sensation of boredom. The root cause of his problem is his parents’ busy schedule. The little boy does
not want to drown in the sadness of a rainy day. Because he does not know how to define the unpleasant
feeling of boredom, he jumps around the room, tiring
himself out. He then sits down and starts sketching on
a piece of paper. At first, to identify the feeling inside
him, he draws ugly characters. The kid’s drawings
come alive and he invents a new game called ‘defeating the Boredom’.

This is a story of altruism and exploitation, wrapped
up in the guise of a Christmas tale. If Santa Claus
really existed, how would he compete on the market,
with toys that are made at the North Pole? Would he
even be suited to capitalism? Like most stories about
Santa Claus, this one starts with the usual Christmas
atmosphere, and children longing for presents.
However, Santa Claus in this story is a symbol of the
unselfish, genuine giver; an ideal philanthropist, in
conflict with the law and a superior rival slave-owning
capitalist toymaker...

This is a film of contrasts: between an idealized theatrical event and everyday life, totally uninterested in art
and artists; between stage workers in a theatre and
passers-by on the streets outside, consumed by the
commercialized Christmas atmosphere; and between
artistic stage scenery and kitschy store windows.
Above all, it contrasts the wealth of the town’s shop
windows with the poverty of the heroine’s neighbourhood and apartment.

The Dance is Over Maria was inspired by the idea
of the predictability of humans and their ingrained
reactions to life’s events – no matter how humdrum
and ordinary, or random and miraculous. How would
unforeseen events affect an ordinary family, or
how does the average man cope with accidents,
catastrophes or unique situations? Removed from
their everyday routines, people are compelled to
restore an equilibrium of peace and harmony –
accomplished only by resolutely returning to their daily
rituals. However, restoring the original balance not
simply a matter of conscious decisions and choices, it
is also about subconsciously repeating common and
learned actions and patterns – which help to give the
illusion of normalcy, even in unusual circumstances.

The main character wakes up, gets out of bed and
starts to exercise; he carries out his routine morning
activities in an environment that resembles a normal
house. Over breakfast, he reads the newspapers and
finds an article about a group of Italian scientists
known as the Panisperna Boys, and Ettore Majorana,
an Italian physicist who disappeared in mysterious
circumstances in 1938. Suddenly the main character
enters the elevator that is hidden in his gym, descends
to the ground floor, and enters a sophisticated, alienstyle command room, where everything looks very
different.

The hero fights against numerous enemies, wins
women’s hearts, kills a huge monster that is
destroying the city and then returns a stolen purse to
a sweet little old lady. And all that in just one episode!
As soon as the shoot is finished, the hero returns to
the grim film industry: the protagonist is replaceable!
They have devised a way to make an actor constantly
available for his role. Mass-market production is
becoming bigger and hungrier. The same market
produces our hero – The Incredible Gunnar – a
fearless pilot who saves the day, every day. What
if someone came up with a way to use Gunnar
indefinitely? Would it make the world a safer place, or
just the opposite?

Is it possible for a Mediterranean island, joyful and
busy during summertime, to somehow become threatening and dangerous? If so, is escape possible? The
film was imagined as a spooky, surreal and atmospheric drama in which a reflection may hint at our

horizon, beyond everything that we know.

At the beginning of the last century a great novelty
emerges: electricity becomes part of everyday life. The
atmosphere in a light-bulb shop is lively and amusing.
Some lamps in the shop-window display are having a
great time, playing with the beams of light from their
bulbs. In the abandoned candlestick shop across the
street, a lonely candlestick is watching them. Drawn by
the glittering light show, he badly wants to join them in
their fun. Late that night, when all the lights have died
out, he embarks on an adventure. He sneaks out of
his shop, determined to join the electric lamps across
the street. Overcoming all obstacles, he manages to
reach his goal. However he finds himself at the back
of the shop, which is not as shiny or inviting as the
shop window at the front. To his unpleasant surprise,
he realizes that he does not like it here and he does
not belong in this world. Resolutely, he goes back to
his own shop. But something has changed: he is not
alone anymore; he has made a new friend.

Bow cannons ominously turn. The title says: Meta –
Odessa Opera. The enemy camp.
Cannon fire begins.
We see stone cherubs, and smoke. A sleepy lion
wakes up and prances. Explosions, total annihilation.
The described frame timeline does not necessarily
correspond to the one (already) seen on the screen.
(Naturally, you recognized the scene from Eisenstein’s
Battleship Potemkin, where sailors attack Odessa after the staircase slaughter. The scene is described in
several theoretical editions because of the images of
three lions: the first one sleeps, the second one wakes
up, and the third one prances.)
The scene is composed of 20 frames, including three
titles, with an overall duration of 34 seconds

Croatian in Conversation | Hrvatski u razgovoru
2013 | 25’ | DigiBeta | Colour
Directed by Ana Hušman
This film is based on a textbook for learning Croatian
as a foreign language – Croatian in Conversation,
published in Zagreb in 1968. The book, aimed primarily
at the Croatian diaspora, follows the adventures of an
émigré family who have returned on holiday to Croatia
in order to introduce their children to their ‘heritage’. The verbal exchanges from the textbook serve
as the starting point for the film. These exchanges
are, for the most part, linguistically improbable; they
were designed to teach basic vocabulary and stock
phrases, as opposed to meaningful human interaction
or realistic conversation.

Directed by Irena Škorić
The main objective of this film is to emphasize the
changes to human emotions; that is, to the heart,
thanks to technological advances in the way we
record events and emotions. In the past, this involved
selecting and choosing what would and would not be
recorded. Now, however, now absolutely everything is
filmed and saved in digital files: files that you cannot

Two children who are best friends live on the same
street, opposite each other. Their street has a name,
like any normal street. The younger child is shorter
than his friend. Even his parents call him ‘Smallest’. He

Which is the Happy Moment of that Day
Gdje je u tom danu moj sretni trenutak
2013 | 20’ | Video | Colour
Directed by Emil Mišković, Krešimir Supek
What would we do if we could ‘edit’ our own reality?
What would we choose to show someone who wanted
to take a deep look into our consciousness, and our
true self? Are the moments that we consider to be
happy, truly happy? Or do we, in the absence of other
better, happier moments, just present them as such?
The main character (Grigor) passes through a series
of everyday events that seem unrelated, but when
viewed as a whole, provide us with a picture of his
everyday life. Grigor is driven by the hope that each
day will meet all of his expectations and aspirations,
but when that does not happen his hopes are transferred to a new day.
