The shape of the sculpture reflects the route of the main character of the film “Vertigo”, while driving a car through the streets of San Francisco. The sculpture was left in the desert in the south-western United States. Frames Łukasz Jastrubczak slides projection 109 slides 2011 Series of 109 slides entitled “Frames” is a reconstruction of selected frames from scenes of the Alfred Hitchcock’s film “Vertigo”. Both locations and cropping are consistent with the original. What differs the slides from the film frames is the absence of actors. “Frames” series is also a photographic report of Łukasz’s touristic trip in San Francisco. Slides are presented in a carousel projector whose design replicates the vortex theme from “Vertigo” Sleeping Cowboy Łukasz Jastrubczak sculpture concrete, black pigment 183 x 40 x 30 cm 2011 In May 2011 the sculpture depicting a sleeping cowboy was made with black plastecine. A month later, it was laid down in a wooden crate and sent to the USA by ship. On July 4 it was delivered to New York. It was a bit damaged. On July 9 it was transported to the airport and sent back to Poland. This time, it shrunk while beating against the walls of the crate during the flight. The purposely deformed plasticine model was then cast in concrete. Permanently the cowboy sleeps on a railway station in Tarnów- Mościce. Need for Speed Łukasz Jastrubczak video HD Blu-ray 48’21’’ 2012 ed. 3/3 + AP 2 500 € excl. vat Need for Speed is a documentation of Łukasz’s travel through cinematic landscapes of south-western part of the United States. Filmed from the windshield, it consists of hypnotic shots of the road, the shape of which, with it’s converging long lines, suggests a triangle. Mirage (The film) Łukasz Jastrubczak 90 minutes HD written by Sebastian Cichocki camera by Małgorzata Mazur 2014-2015 Mirage (The Film) is an adaptation of a book, created by Sebastian Cichocki and Łukasz Jastrubczak in 2012. Two years after the book was published, a journey to United States was realized, in order to investigate material gathered, while working on a book (that mostly involves fictious American conceptual art practices). On the road across the country, 35 people were asked to read parts of the text taken from the book. Accidentaly acquainted persons became actors of the film, performing in a real context of american landscape. Mirage (The Book) Łukasz Jastrubczak 13 x 19 cm 120 pages texts : Sebastian Cichocki photographs : Łukasz Jastrubczak i Małgorzata Mazur graphic design : Magdalena Frankowska / Artur Frankowski / Fontarte published by : Bunkier Sztuki in Kraków 2012 http://mirazmirazmiraz.tumblr.com The material for this publication was collected between December 2011 and February 2012. It consists of email correspondence between Łukasz Jastrubczak and Sebastian Cichocki, in the form of a game or “duel” of image and text. Jastrubczak’s photographs arose during the artist’s journey around the United States, and Cichocki’s textual responses (treated as “curatorial guides and references”) were written in Poland and based, in part, on earlier essays by Robert Smithson. In response to photographs sent by email, texts arose that were guides for the taking of subsequent photos, and so on. The authors had 24 hours to respond. In Search of Miraculous Łukasz Jastrubczak 16 mm 4’06’’ 2013 “In Search of Miraculous” is a film made in Kraków on the banks of the Vistula River. The slow motion camera captures typical phenomenon of this tourist town: a spirit, a walking mulch, a knight or the Wawel Dragon. The film was shown during the final of the most important Polish art competition - Deutsche Bank “Views” which Łukasz won in 2013. Perspective of Failure Łukasz Jastrubczak 16 mm 4’28’’ 2013 “Perspective of Failure” is a film that was made specially for the Deutsche Bank “Views” contest and was the second film among those that were shown at the exhibition. It is a hypnotic vision, full of mysterious symbols, of a conceptual artist being killed in Florence - the capital of the Italian Renaissance. “Perspective of Failure” entwines the most important themes of Jastrubczak’s work: investigations, travel, art history, geometry and perception disorders. The film was realized in two historic sites: near the Basilica of San Miniato al Monte (known from the legend of St. Menas, who after his martyrdom wandered with his own severed head. It also appeared in the film “Obsession” by Brian de Palma in 1976, inspired by Hitchcock’s “Vertigo”) and the Palace Vecchio (where Leonardo da Vinci’s failed frescoes were find underneath the layers of paint). Jug Łukasz Jastrubczak installation found object, fishing line, white cube 60 x 30 x 30 cm 2013 Ghost Łukasz Jastrubczak photography 2013 Ghost Łukasz Jastrubczak photography 2012 Łukasz appeared dressed as a Ghost on a peak of a mountain that almost resembled a “Paramount Pictures” mountain. Couple of weeks later he appeared in the same costume on Robert Smithson’s “Spiral Jetty”. Walking on Spiral Jetty Łukasz Jastrubczak vinyl record 8 inches edition : 22 2015 The work is available at the Altanova record label. http://altanovapress.com Audio recording made without windshield, while walking to the center of Robert Smithson’s “Spiral Jetty” (Side A) and from the center to the beginning (Side B). Side A begins on the outer part of the record, while Side B begins on the centre of the record. Mountain (aerial perspective) Łukasz Jastrubczak sculpture fabric, hidden objects 260 x 100 x 80 cm 2011 Operating the Sun Łukasz Jastrubczak performance in Kraków-Nowa Huta 2014 Łukasz (dressed as a ghost of conceptual artist) was playing on a recorder in the centre of Nowa Huta in Kraków. There was an orange circle attached to his foot; it floated in the sky, maintained by helium filled balloons. Pitch of the tone played on the recorder was depended on the height of the floating circle. If the circle was close to the ground, the pitch was low, if the circle stretched the string to the maximum, the pitch was at its highest. Clash Łukasz Jastrubczak slide 2012 Slide from the projector shows a modified frame from Alfred Hitchcock’s “Rear Window”. Over time, the slide is overexposed as a result of the projector bulb operation. Telescope Łukasz Jastrubczak sculpture black paper, nails, plastic tube, black paint on the wall various dimensions 2011 The black circle painted on the wall exactly coincides with the area visible through a telescope made of cardboard. Eclipse Łukasz Jastrubczak documentation of an action c-print 120 x 100 cm 2009 This work was created while Łukasz visited Liverpool. With a two-meter diameter circle attached to hellium balloons he made several fake solar eclipses. The End Łukasz Jastrubczak documentation of an action c-print 60 x 40 cm 2008 Imitating the credits and their movement Łukasz, during an action in Mysłowice, released a caption “The End” into the sky. Letters made of cardboard attached to the balloons with hellium, soared high and disappeared. In order of appearance Łukasz Jastrubczak photographic documentation of an action 60 x 40 cm 2008 Golden perspective Łukasz Jastrubczak relief cardboard, spray 70 x 70 cm 2013 On a cardboard painted with golden spray Łukasz set a classical perspective. Using a scalpel he formed the lines converging towards the center. In an ideal world the half lines would aim to the infinity never crossing eachother. In fact, the lines intersect and form a textural structure in the center. Hologram Łukasz Jastrubczak installation glass, golden spray, HD projection 100 x 100 cm 2013 The work refers to Joseph Kosuth’s “Square Clear Glass Leaning” from 1965. Jastrubczak evokes the relationship between the art of the 60s (particularly that which postulated to move away from the materiality of artworks) and the resignation from the gold standard by the American government. Cubist Composition with Jug Łukasz Jastrubczak sculpture cardboard, spray, wood, glue 140 x 60 x 50 cm 2011 Skull Łukasz Jastrubczak photography diasec 45 x 31,5 cm 2011 Songs About Triangles Łukasz Jastrubczak installation DVD, tv sets in different dimensions 2’56’’ 3’21’’ 4’33’’ 4’58’’ 5’36’’ 9’58’’ 6’04’’ 1’24’’ 3’58’’ 2’47’’ 2008 - ? All Songs About Triangles, made by Łukasz, are presented as a video installation. The sound of each composition overlaps. Each new song is longer than the previous one, so all compositions, when looped, never repeat the same configuration of sounds. The Third Song About Triangles Łukasz Jastrubczak installation DVD, speakers, projector attached to the ceiling by a chain, engine 4’33’’, loop 2011 Łukasz dressed in cardboard triangles, performs a composition with flute and synthesizer. Video projector is attached to an engine that rotates it through 360 degrees. The image from the “Third song about Triangles” travels around the walls of the room. Animation Łukasz Jastrubczak installation black trampoline, 9 photographs (various dimentions), adhesive tape 2010 Cinema inherently locks the viewer, as it gives him the illusion of movement. “Animation” is a work that reverses the generally accepted truth. In order to watch a short animation we have to jump on the trampoline. Individual frames of the film are glued to the wall. Łukasz used the most popular image formats (passport, visa, diploma, 13x9, 15x10, 18x13, 21x15, 20x30, 38x25). Along with a reduction in size the figure recedes away, and we ourselves become the screen for the projection of our own. Loop Łukasz Jastrubczak photgraphic documentation of an action two photographs, a description 2 x (30 x 40.3 cm) 2010 The figure dressed in black took a route along a quarter of New York streets. At the same time, a black car from 1966 circulated a route that was a mirror image of the first one. Both elements met every three minutes in the same exact location. This recurrent pattern took place about 20 times, exerting on the random viewers a sense of deja vu. Frame Łukasz Jastrubczak object wooden frame, digital print 56 x 70 cm 2011 photo from ebay auction Łukasz bought on ebay a mysterious picture in a frame. When he received the package, it turned out that what Łukasz considered to be a framed photograph was in fact legs from the table on which the seller rested a blank frame with passe partout. There was no photography. To fix this unpleasant surprise (expectations vs. reality) Jastrubczak completed an empty frame with what was supposed to be this mysterious photograph (cropping them from the picture from ebay). White Balance Łukasz Jastrubczak mural (700 x 300 cm) and two photographs (20 x 15 cm) 2014 On the wall in Bunkier Sztuki gallery Łukasz painted a gradient passing from white to blue. Then he took a picture by setting the white balance on a white and blue wall. Then he taped the resulting photographs to the wall. Time Machine Łukasz Jastrubczak installation 70 x 20 x 20 cm 2014 The machine randomly selects a date between January 4, 1966 (this date is trubute to On Kawara) and December 31, 2999. When the button is pressed, the machine will take you to a time somewhere within this interval. Distant Drum Łukasz Jastrubczak video DVD 3’05’’ 2009 The video “Distant Drum” shows the psychokinetic phenomena of controlling a teaspoon and a fork. Łukasz sitting a few meters away from the cutlery, using the intense power of thought, tries to play a drum track. Soundtrack Łukasz Jastrubczak video DVD 8’34’’ 2009 When Łukasz’s girlfriend Gosia is sleeping Łukasz imitates the sounds of rushing wind, foot steps and the rain. Those sounds get into her subconsciousness. Rapid Vienna vs. Rapid Vienna Łukasz Jastrubczak video DVD 6’19’’ 2008 Łukasz filmed a match of Rapid Vienna players playing against themselves. It was all controlled by a computer. In the first two versions of the video the score was 1-0. In the third, ended with a draw, the computer frozed the camera for several seconds on the goalkeeper waiting alone for the attack. The work was made at a time Łukasz was particularly interested in the issue of psychoanalysis. No coincidence that he chose a football team from the city of Sigmund Freud. Sleepwalk Łukasz Jastrubczak installation slide projector (carousel), 72 slides 2008 Artists description: “I was walking in a completely dark park, not seeing anything. I held the camera in one hand, which with the help of a flash illuminated the way. When I really didn’t know where to go and I felt fear, I pushed the camera shutter. The resulting 72 slides form “Sleepwalk” cycle, which is then presented as an installation. Slides are arranged on the projector (carousel) alternating with an empty frame. The projector changes the slides at high speed so that images of the forest are not clear, and the light from the empty frames leaves an alarming afterimage. The rhythmic sound of the changing slides sounds like a music to a thriller.” 666 Łukasz Jastrubczak book 2008 The book consists of 180 pages no “666” from many different books. 0048 603 899 242 ul.
