Brethren (brothers and sisters): See with what
large letters I am writing to you with my own
hand. It is those who want to make a good
showing in the flesh that would compel you to
be circumcised, and only in order that they may
not be persecuted for the cross of Christ. For
even those who receive circumcision do not
themselves keep the law, but they desire to
have you circumcised that they may glory in
your flesh.1 But far be it from me to glory except
in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which
the world has been crucified to me, and I to the
world.2 For neither circumcision counts for
anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new
creation. Peace and mercy be upon all who walk
by this rule, upon the Israel of God. Henceforth
let no man trouble me; for I bear on my body
the marks of Jesus.3 The grace of our Lord Jesus
Christ be with your spirit, brethren. Amen.

The legalizers choose to offend God that they may
please human beings. The “Judaizers” were driven by fear
of persecution, probably from Jewish nationalists who
pressured them to make circumcision the focus of their
missionary efforts. Paul accuses them of abandoning the
true gospel, not out of conviction, but out of cowardice.
Moses lifted up an image of a serpent to cure the
Israelites from deadly bites of poisonous snakes (Nm
21:4-9). This miracle-working image prefigured Christ
being lifted up on the Cross. As believers behold the
crucified Christ in faith, the power of sin and death is
overthrown in them. Just as the image of a serpent was
the weapon that destroyed the power of the serpents, so
the instrument of Christ’s death becomes the weapon
that overthrows death itself.
5 Jesus declares God’s great love not only for Israel, but
for the world. This single verse expresses the whole of
the message of John’s Gospel, and indeed, of salvation
history.

Paul emphasizes that in Christ our sins and worldly
passions are put to death. The Cross – not
circumcision – is the sign of our salvation.

St. Paul is no hypocrite or coward. He has persevered
through much for what he is teaching, and he bears in his
body the marks to prove it.

WED. SEPT 14: EXALTATION OF THE CROSS –
Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at 9:30 am and
7 pm. Great Matins – at 7:30 am on the day of
the feast. Great Vespers and Lytia will be
celebrated on Tuesday, Sept. 13th, at 5 pm.
A GUIDED TOUR OF WORK BEING DONE – Last
Friday, a group of parishioners went up the
scaffolding to see close-hand the restoration
work being done on the cathedral. If anyone
else is interested in a guided tour, please call Fr.
Peter at 780-422-3181 or 780-993-8037.
FUNDRAISING – Please be generous to the
Preservation Fund! Your donations are
important and essential for the completion of
this urgent project! Despite financial support in
form of grants, the majority of funding will need
to be provided by St. Josaphat parishioners and
fundraising events. A cost breakdown of work
done will be provided in next Sunday’s bulletin.
SHROUD OF TURIN PRESENTATION – will take

O Lord, our God and Creator, You have
honored us with your own image, and You
taught Your chosen disciples that the fear of
You is the beginning of true wisdom. You
revealed Your wisdom to children and taught
Your law to Solomon and to all who have
sought You in purity of heart. Open the hearts,
the minds, and the lips of these students.
Enable them to receive the power of Your law,
and to comprehend the useful things which
will be taught them. Help them understand
Your perfect will and contribute to the building
up of Your holy Church. Deliver them from
every snare of the enemy, preserve them in
the true faith, and in righteousness and purity
all the days of their lives. May they grow in
wisdom and in the observance of Your
commandments. May they be revealed as
worshippers of Your name and heirs of Your
kingdom.
Bless also their teachers; grant that their
words be free from every worldly deceit and
vanity, and that they always clearly proclaim

CATECHISM – SUNDAY SCHOOL – For children
in Kindergarten to Grade 5. The Sunday School

therefore the righteous Saints Joachim and Anna
had to endure abuse from their own countrymen.
The Nativity of the
Most Holy Theotokos
On one of the feast days at the Temple in
Jerusalem the elderly Joachim brought his
sacrifice to offer to God, but the high priest would
not accept it, considering him to be unworthy
since he was childless.
The Nativity of Our Most Holy Lady Theotokos
and Ever Virgin Mary: The Most Holy Virgin
Mary was born at a time when people had reached
such a degree of moral decay that it seemed
altogether impossible to restore them. People
often said that God must come into the world to
restore faith and not permit the ruin of mankind.
St Joachim in deep grief went into the wilderness,
and there he prayed with tears to the Lord for a
child. St Anna wept bitterly when she learned
what had happened at the Jerusalem Temple.
Never once did she complain against the Lord, but
rather she prayed to ask God’s mercy on her
family.
The Son of God chose to take on human nature
for the salvation of mankind, and chose as His
Mother the All-Pure Virgin Mary, who alone was
worthy to give birth to the Source of purity and
holiness.
The Lord fulfilled Anna’s petitions. Although the
pious couple had attained to extreme old age, they
had been prepared by God’s grace and by their
virtuous life to fulfill a sublime calling: to be the
parents of the Most Holy Virgin Mary, the future
Mother of the Lord Jesus Christ.
The Nativity of Our Most Holy Lady Theotokos
and Ever Virgin Mary is celebrated by the Church
as a day of universal joy. Within the context of
the Old and the New Testaments, the Most
Blessed Virgin Mary was born on this radiant day,
having been chosen before the ages by Divine
Providence to bring about the Mystery of the
Incarnation of the Word of God. She is revealed
as the Mother of the Savior of the World, Our
Lord Jesus Christ.
The Archangel Gabriel brought Joachim and
Anna the joyous message that their prayers
were heard by God, and of them would be born a
most blessed daughter Mary, through Whom
would come the Salvation of all the World.
The Most Holy Virgin Mary was born in
Jerusalem, in an area just north of the Temple.
Her parents were Righteous Joachim of the tribe
of the Prophet-King David, and Anna from the
tribe of the First Priest Aaron. The couple was
without child, since St Anna was barren.
The Most Holy Virgin Mary surpassed in purity
and virtue not only all mankind, but also the
angels. She was manifest as the living Temple of
God, so the Church sings in its festal hymns: “the
East Gate... bringing Christ into the world for the
salvation of our souls” (2nd Stikhera on “Lord, I
Have Cried”, Tone 6).
Having reached old age, Joachim and Anna did
not lose hope in God’s mercy. They had strong
faith that for God everything is possible, and that
He would be able to overcome the barrenness of
Anna even in her old age, as He had once
overcome the barrenness of Sarah, spouse of the
Patriarch Abraham. Saints Joachim and Anna
vowed to dedicate the child which the Lord
might give them, to the service of God in the
Temple.
Childlessness was considered among the Hebrew
nation as a Divine punishment for sin, and
The Nativity of the Theotokos marks the change
of the times when the great and comforting
promises of God for the salvation of the human
race from slavery to the devil are about to be
fulfilled. This event has brought to earth the grace
of the Kingdom of God, a Kingdom of Truth,
piety, virtue and everlasting life. The Theotokos is
revealed to all of us by grace as a merciful
Intercessor and Mother, to Whom we have
recourse with filial devotion.

one day learning experience to
more fully understand the Divine
Liturgy in our Ukrainian
Catholic Church. We will look
to understand the meaning of
why we pray, why we worship
and why we celebrate in
community.

am and program will start
at 9:30 am. This will give
parents the opportunity to get
their children to their respective
programs. We ask all youth over
the age of 16 to join the adult
program.
Lunch is included in the
registration fee and youth will
join their parents at the family
table.

will be divided into age
appropriate groups with breaks,

A key aim or objective of the UCWLC is to
coordinate activities that enlighten each and
every one in the Eastern Rite and Byzantine
tradition, and has served as a strong unifying
force of our Ukrainian Catholic identity while
opening itself to the mission of sharing our faith
with others.

ДИТЯЧИЙ ХОР ТА МОЛОДІЖНА КАПЕЛЯ.
Запрошуємо дітей віком від 5-ти до 14-ти
років до участі у дитячому хорі, який має
назву "Ангелики" ("Little Angels"). Програма
починається знову у вересні. До програми
входить катехизація хористів, вивчення
Божественної Літургії та церковних пісень,
постановка ріаноманітних виступів з нагоди
церковних свят та христянські дитячі розваги.
Хор співає Літургію кожну останню неділю

Возвеличується також уся сирійська земля, яка
представлена Блаженнішим Григорієм, яка так
само добре знає втрату людського життя. Церква
возвеличується, бо знає, що цей Синод принесе
Боже милосердя. Возвеличується, бо знає, що
кожен єпископ УГКЦ відчуває глибоку
відповідальність за весь Божий люд, за всі
парафії, які Господь поручив під їхню опіку.
Возвеличується, бо цей Синод матиме за тему
«Дияконію». І хто, як не Церква, зможе цьому
народові принести служіння Божого милосердя»,
– відзначив представник Папи в Україні.
У свою чергу Патріарх Григорій, який
неодноразово бував в Україні під час важливих
подій УГКЦ, зокрема під час інтронізації
Блаженнішого Святослава як Глави Церкви,
передав вітання з усіх земель Антіохійського
Патріархату. «Наші країни перебувають у стані
війни. У Сирії війна триває вже шість років, в
Україні трохи менше… Хоча минуло багато років
після Другої світової війни, ми й на далі
знаходимося перед лицем воєн у всьому світі.
Можемо сказати, що світ без Бога – світ без миру,
світ без Бога – світ війни. Тому ми покликані бути
синами миру, синами воскресіння і життя. Ми
маємо бути послідовниками давніх християн на
Близькому Сході і синами й дочками миру. Наше
покликання як християн – покликання до
воскресіння, життя і милосердя. У Сирії та
Україні ми подаємо свідчення мучеників. Але
також ми покликані давати свідчення життя. І для
світу, який втратив Бога, маємо давати свідчення
віри», – переконаний Патріарх Григорій. «Хочемо
передусім бути об’єднані у вірі, а не війною в
наших країнах. Тому хочеться закликати: ні війні
у Сирії, ні війні в Україні! Слава Україні!» –
закликав Глава Мелхітської Церкви.

Синоду. «Пресвята Богородице «Милосердя
двері», виблагай для нашого Синоду благодаті
Духа Святого для добрих рішень. Мати наша,
виблагай миру і любові для української землі», –
помолився Предстоятель.

У Львові Божественною Літургією
розпочався Синод Єпископів УГКЦ
«Божественною Літургією розпочався Синод
Єпископів Української Греко-Католицької
Церкви. Єпископи прибули з усього світу, щоб
стати перед обличчям Богородиці «Милосердя
двері», – відзначив Отець і Глава УГКЦ
Блаженніший Святослав під час проповіді до
вірних.
Головною темою цього Синоду є «Дияконія» –
служіння.
«Ми, єпископи, – зауважив
Предстоятель Церкви, – хочемо себе запитати, як
повинні ми ділитися Божим милосердям з тими,
хто його найбільше потребує. Хочемо запитати
себе, наскільки ми чинимо діла милосердя щодо
тіла і душі ближнього. Наскільки наші єпархії,
парафії є цими осердями, якими горить вогонь
Божого милосердя для кожного потребуючого,
незалежно від того, якою мовою він розмовляє, до
якого народу належить чи до якої церкви ходить».
«Завдання Синоду – подумати, як найкраще бути
сьогодні свідками Євангелія Божого милосердя у
сучасному світі», – поділився Блаженніший
Святослав.
В Архієрейській Літургії взяли участь численні
владики УГКЦ, які прибули на Синод з усіх
куточків світу. Серед почесних гостей
присутніми
були
Архієпископ
Клаудіо
Гуджеротті, Апостольської нунцій в Україні та
Глава Мелхітської Греко-Католицької Церкви,
Патріарх Григорій ІІІ (Лахам), осідок якого
розташований у Сирії.
Під кінець Літургії у своєму слові Апостольський
Нунцій запевнив, що Святіший Отець Папа
Франциск уважно слідкуватиме за роботою
Синоду. «Папа обіймає весь український народ з
батьківською любов’ю свого серця. Він відчуває,
як уся Церква голосить через сльози своїх вірних
у страху перед майбутнім і в терпіннях
сьогодення», – наголосив Архиєпископ Клаудіо
Гуджеротті.
«Та Церква возвеличується, бо знає, що Слава
Божа є більша за всі труднощі і болі людського
життя. Возвеличується, бо знає, що ця прекрасна
земля і цей Божий люд, який переносить болі і
