Let’s all keep our fingers crossed for warm and sunny weather in the months to come. Here’s looking forward to a great summer season full of golf, swimming and memorable times at Chartiers. The “all-day” Club menu is back in full swing. Chef Don added a few new selections, and kept many of your favorites. Come on out to the Club and join us for lunch or dinner. I am sure you will find something on the “all-day” menu that will satisfy your “hunger pains.” This month we move our Friday (Sunday) night entertainment out to the Veranda. On June 1st, Daryl and Kim Askew will be performing from 7-11 p.m. Make sure you check the calendar to see when your favorite performer is at the Club. Please keep in mind that reservations are not accepted on the Veranda. Seating is on a “first come, first served” basis. Waiting lists will be taken as the need arises on the Veranda. Reservations are accepted on the Porch, for any size party. June 7-8, the Club will be hosting our premier event, the Chartiers Classic. As a reminder to the membership, Stop to Enjoy the Newly Remodeled Pro Shop If you have had the pleasure of enjoying the golf course in the past month, I hope you also stopped in to visit the newly remodeled Pro Shop. We replaced the back wall and sidewalk, the interior was painted and new slat walls were installed. A new drop ceiling and lights and new carpet completed the fresh new design. Stop in, shop and enjoy. Bill Moore, Chairman House Physical Committee 3 the Club will close at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, June 7 and all day on Saturday, June 8 for this event. The pool will remain open on these days, offering snack bar food and beverage service ONLY. No other a’la carte service will be available on June 7 after 2:00 p.m. and all day on June 8. This also pertains to take-out food. This allows our culinary and service team to focus on the Classic and make it the true showcase event that it is. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding. In closing, I once again urge you to make Chartiers your number one choice when you are looking for a place to dine and/or socialize. I ask all Members to be considerate of other Members, guests and employees when using the Club, and remind everyone that profanity and impolite behavior simply has no place at Chartiers. We invite you to enjoy our family-friendly atmosphere and become part of the Chartiers’ experience. The staff and I look forward to seeing all of you, either at the pool, on the course or at the Veranda. Stop in and say hello…..my door is always open. Herb Hyland Club Manager In Memoriam Leo P. Golf Tip for May Just a few reminders to help make everyones golf experience more enjoyable. As you now know the golf course is in excellent shape, but playing differently than in previous years. The firm and fast conditions place a premium on course management. Missing a green short-sided can make it VERY hard to get the chip shot up and in. When competing I always colored my pins like traffic lights. • • • • • • Playing time should be 3 Hours 45 Minutes. Slow players should let the group behind play through if a hole is open ahead. All play is continuous from Hole #1 unless instructed otherwise by the Pro Shop. It is inexcusable to jump in front of players already on the course. Remember to rake all bunkers and fix your divots and ball marks. It is the members responsibility that guests are dressed in appropriate attire. As always your comments are welcomed. Bob Campbell, Chairman Golf Committee Red (Never Attack) Yellow (Attack if your feeling comfortable with the shot Green (Attack the pin) During the round you will face these decisions, and the smart players will shoot lower scores by avoiding the BIG numbers on the scorecard trying to do something that has bad odds of being successful. Please remember that Bogeys are not all that bad, but Double Bogeys kill your score. Be smart and avoid the Big Numbers in 2013. The Red Team won our Red & White Tournament – Cathy Frischkorn, Jo Henninger, Jan Sargert, Patty Shields, Missy Smith, and Jamie Speakman. Bubbles was won by the team of Amy Corpuz, Jo Henninger, Kathy Jennison and Carol Pfaff, with Maureen Butts, Rainy Grefenstette and Ann McDonough leading the 9-holers. The lucky winners of Vegas Best Ball, my personal favorite, were Shirley Eskew, Ann Fronduti, Mary Grogan and Jan Sargert, and Fran Dehn, Judi Lerach and Carol Moore. The winning foursome at our Charity Event included Amy Corpuz, Margaret Eubanks, Ann Fronduti and Carol Pfaff. Amy Corpuz and Bridget Clarke were the winners of the Throw Out event. Thanks to the generosity of our members and the great planning (and donating) by Cheryl Schwarzwaelder, Carol Bayer and Clare Goetz, our in-house charity event supporting The DoorWay was a great success raising $2,255. The Executive Director, Joyce Erdner, joined us for lunch and inspired all of us with stories of how they reach out to help children and individuals in crisis. We would also like to thank MaryAnne Klinchock for her generosity…not only did she hit our drives on #7, she donated an on-course playing lesson for a foursome in the Silent Auction! You still have time to invite your guest to this year’s invitational – The Art of Golf – on June 13th. Patty Shields is busy ‘designing’ a very special day for us, so be sure to get your information in to her soon if you haven’t done so already. In addition to our weekly Thursday events, you can also still sign up to participate in our interclub match play competition – Char-Hill-Clair-Brook. Cathy Frischkorn is heading this up for us, so please contact her with any questions about the opportunity to play at our friendly neighboring clubs. And… ALL Chartiers ladies with golf privileges are encouraged to participate in our Morning Glories & Nightin’ Gals on Tuesdays throughout the season. Just call the Pro Shop and let them know you want to play and they will set you up with a 9- or 18-hole foursome. It’s a great way to improve your game and meet new members! You still have plenty of time to sign up for this year’s Mixed Invitational on Saturday, July 13th - Days of Wine & Roses. If you have any questions, please contact our very own WGA members Kathy Sembrat and Judy Gates for the details of this couples event. Love, Laugh, Live, Golf, Dance, Sing! Karen Burgunder WGA Chairwoman 412-999-9010 Golf is good for the soul. You get so mad at yourself you forget to hate your enemies. – Will Rogers Mother’s Day Grounds Update 7 It has been a very busy spring for the Grounds Department this season. The cool weather that delayed all of our aerification procedures, and led the slow recovery of those procedures, has carried on throughout the month of May. The good news is that we finally feel we have caught up in regards to fully preparing the golf course for the months ahead. Native Areas Throughout the past few weeks, our Department has thoroughly combed through the native high grass areas on the course, spot spraying weeds and undesired grasses. We are just a short time away from the native areas browning off, which will lead to aesthetically pleasing contrast on the golf course. We are really pleased with the efficacy of our herbicide applications, and feel that our naturalized area will look their best. Green Surrounds So far this spring we have only completed one green surround (#10). This time of year can be very difficult to perform sod work, so we must be careful not to bite off more than we can chew. If the time and conditions present themselves, we will re-sod the surround on #13 green. For this to happen we must have some relief from the dry conditions, as most of our key personnel become heavily involved in hand watering and water management. Annual & Perennial Beds We have planted our annual flowers throughout the golf course, as we do each year in the month of May. We have also installed other perennial plant material around the perimeter of the club house to replace the trees that were removed last fall, and at the front entrance to block the newly installed water meter vault. The Grounds Department would like to thank Mrs. Debbie Beck, as her expertise was utilized on plant selection. Cart Path Edges The Grounds Department is making a strong push to correct the high and low grade differences on our path edges as a result of the cart path paving. This has been on our radar for some time now, but other tasks have prevented the work from taking place. We apologize for any inconveniences this may have caused. Fairway & Tee Topdressing We have continued to see the benefits of the top dressing program on #8 fairway. This month we will begin to top-dress other low-lying areas on fairways such as #10, 12, & 17. Along with the fairway topdressing we begin to top-dress the teeing surfaces on the golf course in effort to dilute thatch and firm up the teeing ground. With the summer months quickly approaching, the Grounds Department is confident that we have properly prepared the golf course, and are geared up to face the challenges and conditions that are associated with the dog days of summer. We will continue to fine tune all the details on the golf course in our efforts to provide the best possible playing conditions.
