Leave your hat on
at Hats Off
TAMWORTH – the setting for the 17th annual Toyota Hats
Off to Country Festival – is undoubtedly the hottest spot for
talent anywhere in the nation in July.
P
resented by Tamworth Stakeholders
in conjunction with Tamworth
Regional Council, Toyota Hats Off to
Country, proudly sponsored by Tamworth
City Toyota, will be staged from July 7 to 10
in Australia’s Country Music Capital.
Golden Guitar-winning country star
Adam Harvey will stand and deliver at the
main event, the annual Southern Cross
Austereo Give Me 5 for Kids concert, in
Blazes at Wests on Saturday, July 9 at
7.30pm. Now in its sixth staging, the
concert raises much-needed funds for
the children’s ward at Tamworth hospital.
Being the family man he is, Harvey said
he looks forward to supporting this great
cause every year.
Even before the festival begins,
some of country’s brightest stars and
sought-after musicians will have been in
residence, teaching the next generation
of artists at the CMAA Junior Academy of
Country Music from July 2 to 9.
Amber Lawrence, David Carter, Simon
Johnson, Doug Gallacher, Rod Motbey
and recent senior graduate and Toyota
2
Star Maker finalist Liam Kennedy-Clark
will instruct and inspire the contingent
in a week-long workshop, leading up to
graduation day, July 9, in the Peter Smart
Centre at Calrossy. The juniors’ parents
will also be schooled in various aspects of
the industry.
Class is also very much in session
out at The DAG Sheep Station at Nundle,
where it’s always one or two jumpers
colder than Tamworth. The cool climes
aid the creative process, says The DAG
Singer-Songwriters’ Retreat founder
John Krsulja.
Another enthusiastic cohort of
students will gain expert tuition at The
DAG from Golden Guitar winners and
industry leaders Luke O’Shea, Kevin
Bennett, Felicity Urquhart, Lyn Bowtell,
Jeremy Edwards and Aleyce Simmonds
during the week-long retreat in the hills of
gold from July 7 to 12.
Along with the lessons, there will be
plenty of practical “work experience” as
tutors and students combine to present
showcases, served with a tasty meal,
Bill Chambers
courtesy of hosts John and Belinda Krsulja
and their award-winning team.
Back in Tamworth, the beat goes
on with live music and shows on
offer at 14 venues across the city. For
legendary Central Coast-based singersongwriter Bill Chambers, coming back
to Tamworth is always a homecoming of
sorts. He’ll reign supreme on Saturday,
July 9 in the Bill Chambers Room at The
Pub on Gunnedah Rd.
Immediately preceding the Bill
Chambers concert is the launch of
2016 Toyota Star Maker Karin Page’s
new EP. Fresh from her performance at
the AristoMedia Global Artist Party in
Nashville, Karin can’t wait to share her
music with fans in the country capital.
Exceptional entertainment is the key
to success at the Wests group, which
includes Wests’ Diggers and its sister club
across the river, Wests.
Fabulous acts like Marie Hodson,
Wendy Phypers and the Cartwheels will
get the show rolling along in the Legends
lounge at Wests before hitting the road.
Troy Kemp, recently returned from
a songwriting stint in Nashville, will
hold court in Diggers while Tamworth’s
favourite country daughter, Ashleigh
Dallas and her hot band serve up the
goods in Legends lounge at Wests.

Hats Off, showcasing the talents of crowdpleasers Alby Pool, Sandra Humphries,
Anthony Taylor and many more in its
classic country lineup. The monthly
CCMA Jam will herald the start of Hats Off
activities at the bowlo on Wednesday, July
6 at 7pm.
Popular with audiences of all ages,
Simply Bushed is tipped to draw large
crowds once again to the Tamworth
Services Club dance floor over two big
nights, while Golden Guitar winner Luke
O’Shea will share some heartfelt storysongs of Australia and its people in a
special dinner show at North Tamworth
Bowling Club.
The Bligh St bowling club is also the
launching pad for a new tribute show,
devised by Werris Creek songstress Marie
Hodson. Hodson and Victorian Golden
Guitar winner Wendy Phypers (The
Sparnetts/The Cartwheels) will present
Wendy Phy
pers
Sandra Humphries
their salute to leading country ladies
Patsy Cline and Brenda Lee, before taking
the show on tour to Queensland and
beyond with a hot band in tow.
It wouldn’t be Hats Off to Country
without the ever-popular Don Costa
presenting two shows daily at Tamworth
Shoppingworld. The shopping centre
king will also appear at the newest live
music venue in town – the Cattleman
Steakhouse, along with Cassidy-Rae
Wilson, Ryan Sampson and Brendan
Ryan Sampson
Nawrocki, who kicks off Hats Off nice
and early on Tuesday, July 5 with a
songwriters’ round.

Tamworth’s pub scene is well and
truly buzzing with live music. The
Golden Guitar-winning Adam Eckersley
Band will perform at The Albert, along
with the lovely Brooke McClymont as
special guest artist.
Rising star Missy Lancaster, a grand
finalist in Toyota Star Maker this year,
will deliver her sassy style of country at
The Post Office Hotel, where Tamworth
Songwriters’ Association members
perform throughout the day.
Mike Vee and The Viper Creek Band
will be heard cranking out the tunes from
The Longyard Hotel, while those keen to
see Chad Morgan immortalised in bronze
will be at Southgate Inn for a bronze
bust fundraising event, hosted by the
Australian Bush Balladeers Association.
Along the Armidale Rd, you’ll find the
Oasis Hotel – a true haven for those with a
penchant for traditional and bush balladstyle music with an atmosphere you just
can’t beat.

This midyear festival in the Country
Music Capital is a seasonal favourite for
those who prefer enjoying their country in
cooler conditions than the 40-degree heat
of Tamworth in January.
Tamworth Stakeholders’ chairman Max
Ellis said the organisation’s partnership
with council could only serve to grow the
winter festival.
“I’m delighted that Tamworth Regional
Council is now working closely with
Tamworth Stakeholders on Hats Off to
Country,” Mr Ellis said.
“We are certain now, that after 17
years, the future is secured and we can
look forward to Hats Off becoming bigger
and better. It’s another great reason to
draw people to the home of country music
in Australia.”
Tamworth Regional Council country
music unit manager Barry Harley said the
success of Hats Off was something quite
remarkable, considering it’s the “baby
Go microlighting

sister” to the much larger January event.
“Isn’t it extraordinary that Hats Off,
which really pales into insignificance
compared to January, can still boast
more artists than any other festival in
Australia,” Mr Harley said.
Hats Off (or on, it really doesn’t
matter), as long as you make tracks for
Tamworth in July for Toyota Hats Off to
Country 2016 – and don’t forget to bring
your winter woolies with you!

The Long & Short Of It
The Postie – your
new local favourite
Located in the heart of Tamworth’s CBD, The Post Office
Hotel caters for a range of clientele wishes and requests,
from hearty meals to live music on weekends and vibrant
Wednesday trivia evenings.
T
he Fitzroy St-based establishment
has been at the heart of live
entertainment for the past five years,
since its refurbishment and change of
leasehold in August 2011.
The warm and inviting surroundings
have added a new and lively feel to
Tamworth’s CBD, creating a social hub for
locals and visitors alike.
The hotel combines the charm of
country hospitality with the buzz of a
thriving metropolitan venue, to offer the
perfect venue for the most discerning of
patrons. Be comforted through the winter
chills by a cosy fireplace, natural timber
surroundings and flooding natural light.
And, when the warmer months greet
us, enjoy sipping on cocktails in the change
to balmy nights with the large street-front
openings creating an alfresco appeal.
The hotel’s past Tamworth Country
Music Festival line-ups have been a huge
success, showcasing a range of artists
from near and far.
Celebrated artists such as Mustered
Courage, Jayne Denham, Murphy’s Pigs, 8
Ball Aitken and Louise Adams have all hit
the stage throughout the years.
The hotel has also given home to great
talent throughout the Hats Off to Country
Festival, presenting many gifted musicians
during this ever-popular local winter
music event.
The Postie has a close correlation with
the Tamworth Songwriters’ Association
(TSA), playing host to the Songwriters’
Sessions for the July proceedings.
It has seen such revered artists as
The Long and Short Of It, Brothers 3 and
Allison Forbes grace The Post Office stage.
This year we look forward to artists
from the TSA playing throughout Saturday
from 10.30am.
Showcasing the evening for the Hats
Off weekend will be Sydney’s newly-signed
Sony Music artist, Missy Lancaster.
At just eight years of age, Missy
experienced her first taste of live
performance when she joined Luke O’Shea
on stage for a rendition of True Blue.
This led to singing and guitar lessons
and, by her mid-teens, Missy’s love of
Big Golden Guitar
music took flight.
Missy recalls this time of her life:
“Playing guitar, singing and learning songs
became my absolute favourite thing to do.
That was it … I was addicted to music,”
she said.
In October 2015, Missy travelled
to Nashville to write and record her
second EP with acclaimed songwriter
and producer Lindsay Rimes handling
production. Lindsay has a long list
of credits, including songwriting and
production for gold and platinum artists
such as Tina Arena, Lee Kernaghan, The
McClymonts, Troye Sivan, Reece Mastin,
Taylor Henderson, Shannon Noll and
Timomatic.
Highlights of the trip included co-writing
with Stephen Barker-Liles (Love and Theft),
Jason Duke (Kelsea Ballerini), Matt Scullion
and Morgan Evans, along with performing at
the famed Bluebird Café.
The Post Office Hotel is Tamworth’s
local hub for social, family and music
events year-round.
Through continually supporting the
rising Tamworth music scene – its artists
and its festivals – as well as bringing
national and international stars to the
local stage, the Postie provides the place
to be for great food, country service and
top entertainment in a friendly and vibrant
atmosphere.

Whether you’re a local or have travelled to Tamworth for this
year’s Hats Off to Country, you won’t want to miss the great
line-up of entertainers across The Pub Group venues.
I
t might be cold outside but some of the
hottest acts in country music will take to
The Pub Group stages.
Tamworth entertainer Mike Vee gets
the ball rolling on Thursday, July 7 in the
front bar of the iconic Longyard Hotel
from 6pm.
At 6.30pm on Friday, July 8 Becci
Nethery has chosen the Family Hotel’s
Honky Tonk Bar to launch her new album.
Compere Ray McCoy from 88.9FM will
introduce special guests before Becci
takes the stage to showcase songs from
the new disc.
From 8pm on Friday, The Pub on
Gunnedah Rd is the place to be for some
down-home, genuine country music,
courtesy of Tamworth broadcaster and
firefighter, Brian (Howdy) Howard, and his
sidekicks Dubby and Big Al.
Just as The Pub cranks into gear with
Howdy’s Hoedown, the Viper Creek Band
will take the stage at the Longyard Hotel
in the front bar.
From 1pm on Saturday at Southgate Inn,
the Australian Bush Balladeers’ Association
presents a fundraising concert to help get
Aussie legend Chad Morgan “busted”.
Host Lorraine Pfitzner will introduce a
swag of beaut performers keen to see the
Sheik from Scrubby Creek immortalised
in bronze so he can join his mates in
Bicentennial Park.
Fresh from her exciting, action-packed
Nashville trip, 2016 Toyota Star Maker
Karin Page will entertain one and all at
The Pub from 12.30pm at The Pub.
Stick around at the 99 Gunnedah Rd
venue for some cool country from Bill
Chambers – the bloke the music room is
named after.
If you’ve never caught a Bill Chambers
Session during the January festival, do
yourself a favour and make 3pm Saturday,
July 9, a date at The Pub.
If you like your country original, you
can’t go past Songwriters Over Lunch at
the Longyard Hotel from 11am on Sunday,
followed by another crop of great writers
from high noon.
Then at 3pm, former Tamworthian
and now Newcastle resident, singersongwriter Matt Scullion will hold court in
the front bar of the Longyard.
The Pub Group is famed for its
entertainment, as you can see from the
abovementioned line-up – but it’s almost
as famous for its food and hospitality.
You can always purchase a nourishing,
hearty meal at The Longyard, The Family
Hotel, Southgate Inn and The Pub.
The friendly service you receive from
staff is an added bonus.

You get twice the enjoyment
with the Wests’ group
The Wests Entertainment Group incorporates Wests (West
Tamworth League Club) and Wests’ Diggers. These sister clubs
provide you with two convenient locations and great entertainment
for you to enjoy, all in warm, air-conditioned comfort.
O
n Friday, July 8 Marie Hodson,
Wendy Phypers with The
Cartwheels will perform free from
8.30pm in Wests’ Legends lounge.
For our footy fans, enjoy the live
football games from 7.30pm on the big
screens in Scores Bar across the river
at Diggers.
Headlining at the Wests Entertainment
Group for Hats Off to Country, highly
acclaimed country music star Adam
Harvey is bringing Harvey’s Bar into Blazes
on Saturday night, July 9, with all ticket
sales going to Give Me 5 For Kids.
Give Me 5 For Kids is a Southern Cross
Ten initiative, raising funds for the local
hospital by enabling them to purchase
vital equipment required to assist sick
kids where it really matters.
Adam said he’s really excited to
be back in Tamworth for the Hats Off
Festival”.
“I have been involved with Give Me 5
For Kids now for several years, so we will
do our very best to raise as much money
as possible for such a worthy, important
cause,” he said.
“I really like the fact that all the money
raised will stay in Tamworth and help out
the local hospital.”
Showtime will be 7.30pm, with tickets
available from the ticket box at Wests, by
phone on 6765 7588 or via the website,
wtlc.com.au
Outside in the Legends lounge will be
Tamworth’s newest Golden Guitar-winning
sweetheart, the delightful Ashleigh Dallas,
performing with her band from 8.30pm.
In Scores Bar at Diggers from 8.30pm,
Troy Kemp will team up with good friend
and guitar virtuoso Jeremy Barnes.
Together Troy and Jeremy wrote and
produced most of the songs on Troy’s
latest album, Against The Grain. Then on
Sunday at 2pm the pair will come back
and perform some more great country
music for all to enjoy. And it’s all free!
Sunday afternoon at Wests from 2pm,
Tamworth’s favourite girlpower duo, Two
Gals will appear in Legends lounge to
wind up the Hats Off to Country Festival.
Banjos Restaurant and Neros Café
at Wests offers casual-style dining in
comfortable surrounds. Downstairs at
Diggers is the Star Maker Café, which has
quick and easy, wholesome snacks as well
as delicious coffee.
Upstairs is Smoky’s Bar & Grill,
a brilliantly-themed country-style
restaurant devoted to Australian country
music legend, Smoky Dawson.
One of the best things about dining at
the club is meals and drinks are always
at club prices and there’s a selection of
sensibly-priced bottled wines.
It has been a busy time at Wests over
the past month with Scully Park Regional
Sporting Precinct holding its first major
NRL/CRL event, the Country vs City origin
game on May 8.
With a crowd of 8,317 in attendance
and live broadcasting by Channel 9, it
certainly was a day to remember!
The new hotel adjacent to the club is
progressing well, with completion expected
