Countryside Brochure 2014-2015
Why Countryside?
21 years and counting…
We have seen this fledgling industry grow to its current size right from the
start. It would not be wrong to call us one of the pioneers in the adventure
tourism business. While there were several tour operators there was no
company based out of Mumbai. Countryside has been promoting,
organized treks and overland driving tours to remote destinations since
1993.
While there are miles to go, the very fact that we are growing from strength
to strength not just in the number of clients we have, new and repeat;
reiterates the fact that we have become the most trusted name to guide
you in your tryst with adventure.
Been there done that….
So many years in the business, which for us is really a deep abiding
passion, also means that we have a staggering amount of adventure tours
& packages in different regions, that we offer. Our strength is also that we
have created a strong network of reliable tour leaders, transporters,
guides, hotels & guesthouses; the entire supply chain is tried & tested.
Adventure for everyone
We have soft to extreme adventure tours for a novice doing it for the first
time to a seasoned pro who wants challenging endurance. The young or
the old, a group of friends or a family with mixed age groups, we have done
it and we have it in our bag…
Safety
This surely has to be a prime concern while selecting an operator. Our
track record is impeccable and this is no flash in the pan. It’s the time and
effort we spend in planning, checking, and rechecking that ensures that
everything goes off without a hitch. We ensure that all our guides are
experienced & trained and a certain ratio of guides & assistant guides is
retained for a particular group size.
Comfort
Our endeavor is to make the outdoors experience comfortable. Our equipment
is clean and hygienic; it is of a good quality and is properly maintained. There
is absolutely no compromise on food and the menus are planned and
sumptuous. Our guides are caring and well spoken; we ensure that apart from
guides there is enough support staff to take care of contingencies. We
understand that some people have different requirements & expectations and
to cater to such guest we customize the tours.
Environment & sustainability
We recognize that we have to be responsible towards the impact that our tours
may cause. We respect and are committed to protecting the environment from
which we derive so much pleasure. We also consider our impact on local
communities. We use local guides & tour leaders wherever possible to create a
long-term relationship, we believe in paying a fair price to all our staff, there is
no undercutting or exploitation; this is done consciously and generously. We
follow a zero-litter policy on all our tours.
Choosing your tour
Keeping in mind the feedback that we have got from customers as well as the
kind of tours that we do, we have a new grading system that can help you
decide your level of activity and make the perfect selection. Honestly there are
only two grades either you can do it or you can’t but to help you come to that
decision we take several factors into consideration while grading the tour such
as altitude, net height gain, terrain, weather, duration, etc.
Please find the details in our General Information.
Our tours are divided into three broad subsections:
These are driving tours in less frequented regions with many
comforts and little physical challenge.
These tours are interspersed with few physical activities of soft to
s moderate grades and are meant for all age groups unless otherwise
specified.
There are a wide range of treks offered across the Himalayas of soft to
strenuous grades. The duration varies from 3 days to 21 days.
Further you can choose from the following:

What’s New
Going Places…
Countryside continues in its tradition of introducing new regions and treks
to their repertoire. This is important to us - at a personal level because this is
what the business is for us - a passion to explore new places and also
because during the course of our 20 long years we have made many friends
who depend on us to keep taking them to new treks or regions.
So here’s a peek at what is new at ‘Countryside’....
Trek Padum - Hemis, Ladakh: - This is a tough trek that is rarely put on any
itinerary - We trek through Zanskar crossing three high passes in the range of
5000m. The region is so remote that there are hardly any villages. It’s a great
trek for those who want to take adventure to the next level. Long walk, high
passes, stunning scenery and an azure blue sky keeping you company all
the way.
Great Lakes, Kashmir: - Kashmir has been missing from the trekking
agenda for many many years. And that is sad because the Himalayas there
are more stunning and more rugged in a way that we don’t see either in
Himachal, Ladakh or in Sikkim. The Great Lakes is one of the classics, the
altitude is not very high but we trek through some of the most beautiful
regions of our country. Passes, lakes, meadows the trek has it all, join us on
the first time ever to the Kashmir valley!
Langtang - Gosaikund, Nepal: - The Langtang & Helambu valley is a region
quite close to Kathmandu and offers some stunning treks. The Langtang
Valley trek is on the list of the 100 most beautiful treks in the world - a walk
that will take you deeper and deeper into the Langtang Valley which then
opens up to reveal some beautiful secrets. The trek involves good amount of
walking in fairly high altitude regions.
Bashleo Pass, Himachal: - Another under explored area is near the Jalori
pass in Himachal. This is a relatively moderate trek. We plan to go there in
early summer and we will trek through alpine forest, Himalayan villages and
cross the Bashelo pass at 11,500 feet.
s
Assam and Arunachal Pradesh
The north-eastern states in India remain shrouded in mystery. The tribes,
the abundant flora and fauna, the dense jungles, rhinos, wildlife it has so
much that attracts us. Some of the most ancient tribes reside here living
almost in a time-wrap; they transport us back to a century forgotten.
Whether it is the culture or the sheer variety of flowers and birds, or the lore
of Kaziranga, there is something for everyone…
Explore Zanskar
Zanskar valley - is still unexplored & quite a remote area of Ladakh; presently
with roads penetrating practically in every village the solitude & wilderness
would last for only a few more years at best. Till date this valley remains cut
off from the rest of Ladakh & Kashmir for 6 months of the year. We visit the
side valleys of Zanskar river, visit a few Gompa’s & do some short hikes &
walks.
Joins us to explore & experience this unknown Ladakh - The Zanskar Valley.
2
Sangla Family Adventure Camp..
Away from hustle & bustle of city life, Sangla Adventure is the most ideal way
of experiencing adventure holiday with your family it offers you the comforts
& activities for the kids. Try our Sangla Adventure instead of a trip to Goa this
year!!!
Ladakh
Ladakh the land of high passes, arid dessert and sheer drama! Sandwiched between two mountain ranges, Kunlun in the North and the
Himalayan range to the south Ladakh is in the rain shadow. This gives the area its own unique character - both in terms of the dramatic
lunar landscape and the complete outdoor experience it can give. From climbing a 20,000 foot mountain, to cycling across the world’s
highest motorable pass, a chance to visit the scenic brackish water lakes - each experience irreplaceable. Very many say that the drives in
Ladakh are unmatched for the degree of difficulty and beauty. It’s the mecca for the adventure enthusiast an experience you cannot ignore
and you surely cannot forget!

Ulhas Deshpande: Thinking back it was gratifying that one of our team members Sukhdeo Zala made it to the top in very tough conditions along
with the local guide and a young Sherpa. That ensured that the expedition was successful which is the best thing that could have happened.
Nothing like the team succeeding. We had a terrific support from Countryside Adventures the Mumbai based firm that organized and planned the
expedition. All credit to them and Rahul Yelange our expedition leader who is an Everest climber in 2013 and led the group so well. Amazing local
Sherpa support including all our helpers and cook who made it an enjoyable experience.

The high-altitude lakes of Ladakh are unique - not just because the
brackish water confirms that they were indeed the sea that got ‘folded’
up during evolution but because they are stunningly beautiful. Pangong
Tso, Tso Moriri and Tso Kar; Tso is obviously lake in the local language.
This tour takes you to all three and we soak in the ethereal beauty of the

Padum - Hemis
Stok Kangri Climb
CD
Not for the faint hearted - a demanding trek that takes you through a route that
even the locals consider isolated. One of the hardest treks in Ladakh we will
cross three high passes (approx. 5000m plus). Narrow gorges, river crossings,
steep scree slopes all are part of the standard trekking day. At times you will
have to wade through ankle deep to waist deep, fast flowing cold river water.
Obviously not everyone is cut out for so much adventure. We recommend this
one to experienced trekkers who want to take it a notch higher.
CD
The trek is one of a kind. It gives a layman the chance to ascend a 6120m
peak. There are not many peaks that high that are so accessible and do
not require any technical climbing. This offers you the chance to tick that
one off your bucket list. After acclimatizing in Leh we walk up to base
camp and then make a summit attempt. The summit offers great views of
the Indus Valley and the Karakoram and the Stok Matho Range. This tour
is best suited for 'fit trekkers'.

Madhavi Acharekar: As olwez, nature at its best!!!
CD
Years ago the locals waited for the river to freeze so that they could travel
down from the high passes to the lower altitude and comfort of Leh, by
walking on the frozen ‘chaddar’ of Zanskar. We use this frozen riverbed
today to create trek that walks the talk with the locals. The trek is one of
the most written about and exquisite that you will get to do. The extreme
cold and altitude are mental blocks but the chance to see the frozen
waterfall is an opportunity that should not be missed.

Himachal
An adventure hub of sorts, Himachal has trekking, skiing, rafting, paragliding and much more. The region of Himachal surrounded by snow
covered peaks, is one of the most accessible areas in the Himalayas to trek in. The altitude changes gradually from low to high and gives an
opportunity to undertake some tough walking as we go along.
The mountain roads in India are an engineering wonder - but perhaps none more than the Hindustan Tibet road. The drive from Shimla
passes through some of the most stunning landscapes, high mountains, alpine forests, rolling meadows, snow capped peaks and some
precipitous hairpin bends. The Sangla Valley is famous for its apple orchards and the wooden architecture of the temples and old buildings
which is unique in its beauty. Spiti Valley boasts of the highest village Komik that has public transport available. The one thing
accompanying us throughout in this journey is nature’s abundant beauty.

Gerald Wilson : We'd like to thank you for all you did to look after our welfare and to make it such a memorable trip. Everything went so smoothly
(except for the weather over the Pin Parvati Pass!) and we think your attention to detail is great. It was undoubtedly one of our best treks and we're very
grateful to you for taking us on at our age. We feel we've once again had a great experience in the wonderful Himalayan mountains and we feel so lucky
still to be able to participate in such a trek and to have had such a great group to be with. Everyone was so helpful to us and I don't remember hearing a
cross word from anyone.
Explore Spiti
CD
Every year for six months, the Himalayan valleys of Kinnaur and Spiti
emerge from a thick cloak of snow to reveal a different secret world to
man. Rivers start to flow with unseen fury, the earth turns a swathe of
colour, mountains unlock secret doorways and local inhabitants come
out in celebration of itself. At dizzying heights of 2600m to 4200m, the
experience is almost surreal. Gods and nature seem to lure man, perhaps
even challenge him to make the journey into their den of barren deserts,
fierce mountains, turbulent rivers, dense forests and moody skies. This is
your journey of discovery in the lesser known Himalayas.

Uttarakhand
The highest peak completely situated in India is Nanda Devi finds its home in the state. The scene of countless pilgrimages this state has its
roots steeped in the spiritual heritage of this great land. The various sources of the Ganges Yamunoti, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath is
the betroth that draws devotees by the hordes. Here the tourist is replaced by the devout the young, the old, the fit and the infirm all find
their way here battling biting cold, high altitude sickness. Finding penance perchance is this hardship as the Gods almost seem to be close
enough to touch.
The Great Himalayan Range forms the backbone of the Garhwal and Kumaon regions. To its south is the Siwalik range where peaks barely
extend 2864m. The main tributaries of the Ganga and Kali form rugged gorge country. The Gangotri glacier completely enclosed by a
concentration of peaks and the Badrinath to its east and the Nanda Devi afford many a challenge for intrepid mountaineers.
This land of Gods and all things religious has much more to offer Valley of Flowers, the sacred Roop Kund and Dodital lakes, Milam glacier
and Kuari pass each of these have a distinct flavor rolling meadows to killer ascents. Mythology seeps out of every pore. There is a story and
an accompanying temple for the story!

CD
The advent of spring infuses a completely new life in the temperate slopes of
the Sikkim Himalayas. Entire slopes are transformed into a colour pallet of
rich reds, yellows and pinks. The air is thick with the fragrance of the
blooming rhododendrons.
Our trek covers the higher reaches of the Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary in
West Sikkim. Entire hill slopes are covered with Arboreum, Falconeri,
Barbatum, Hodgsoni and Campanulatum, the most commonly found
rhododendron species in this sanctuary. The flowering season also attracts a
plethora of bird species making it a delight for bird watchers. One gets an
opportunity to see many rare birds like the Black-breasted Parrotbill, Blood
Pheasant, Himalayan Monal and Rusty-bellied Shortwing, besides many
varieties of Flycatchers, Laughing thrushes, Tits and Babblers.
In Barsey one passes through dense thickets of rhododendrons below the Tal
mountain ridge laden with conifer forest of silver fir and hemlock. The trek
winds its way through the source of two rivers, which originate from moist
grassy meadows. After Thulo Dhaap the trail climbs up to the Shingalila
Ridge opening up grand vistas of the snow-capped mountain ranges. All
along the trek we gorge ourselves on the magnanimous views of the
Khangchendzonga range.

Assam, the rich, green land of rolling plains and dense forests is the
gateway to the northeastern part of India. The mighty Brahmaputra River
that has its origins in Tibet charts its majestic course through this state.
This mystic land of eternal blue hills and beautiful rivers is renowned for
its tea, rich flora and fauna, the world famous one horned rhinoceros and
other rare species of wildlife which are on the verge of extinction. Barring
Africa, there is perhaps no part of the world where such a variety of
wildlife exists!
CD
Dense virgin forests, spectacular snowcapped mountains, gushing rivers
cutting deep gorges; few other places in the world come close to the raw,
rugged beauty of Arunachal Pradesh. As you will discover the area to the
west of the Kameng River, which includes Bomdila and Tawang; is
popularly referred to as West Arunachal. This part of Arunachal is mainly
dominated by the Monpas, a benevolent Buddhist tribe. What may amaze
you is that even after so many years the origins of this tribe is riddled with
speculation; albeit it is believed that they migrated from neighboring
Tibet and Bhutan over many centuries.
The Tawang valley is the epicenter of the Monpa culture for it is over here
that Guru Padmasamphava introduced Buddhism in the 8th century. It
was in 1680 that Lodre Gyatso popularly referred to as Merak Lama
constructed the Tawang monastery, the largest of its kind in the country.
The monastery offers commanding views of the Tawang valley below.

Nepal
This region needs little introduction. Out of the fourteen peaks which are higher than 26,000 ft., nine are in Nepal. We are on top of the
world, literally and figuratively. Trekking options are many, from the popular options of Everest Base Camp and Annapurna Base Camp to
some of the lesser known beautiful treks that the region has to offer. The trekking style on some of these treks is tea-house trekking and we
are well looked after, leaving us better equipped to undertake some tough walks.

Tibet
Tibet, the mountain desert provides access to Mt. Everest from the north. But Tibet has more to offer. For many, a drive to Mt. Kailash to do
a parikrama of the mountain and to pay homage to Lake Manasorovar is the most holy of tours. Lhasa with its famed Potala palace, the
erstwhile home of Dalai Lama, once again pulls tourists from the world over. A drive to this punishing high altitude plateau is a surreal tour
where lines between past and present blur. A land which has some nuggets tucked away, waiting to be discovered - of stories untold of
customs, passion and adventure.

Bhutan
The Buddhist mountain kingdom has done a wonderful job of preserving old customs and values which makes a drive through the country
memorable. Snowcapped peaks surround us as we pass through the beautiful countryside seeing quaint houses, terraced fields and
fluttering prayer flags. The Dzongs are functional and the monasteries provide a glimpse of how government and religion co-exist in this
mountain kingdom. The flora and fauna and the huge multitude of exotic birds will liven up the drive.

Soli Kheswalla : Very well organised tour. A tailor made trip to suit our needs. Bhutan associate too was very good in organising our trip after we landed
in Bhutan. Our driver was very good and a very cautious driver. Bhutan is a beautiful country with scenic beauty on par with that found in Alaska,
Norway, Switzerland, Austria and New Zealand. Bhutan should be promoted a lot more aggressively as a holiday destination. Thanks once again for
arranging a wonder and memorable holiday.

Oman
Oman, oldest of the Gulf States, is a land of dramatic contrasts. It is the home & port of the famous adventurer, Sinbad the Sailor. So it is no
wonder that the sultanate has such an abundance of hidden treasure - from the grand forts, exquisite palaces and mystical souqs
(markets) to the undulating dunes, mountains, fresh water wadis & miles upon miles of unspoilt sandy beaches. Ancient Arabic culture and
tradition sit side by side with a modern infrastructure

Tanzania & Kenya
East Africa is one of the oldest known inhabited areas on Earth. Tanzania is home to the world famous Kilimanajaro, the highest mountain in Africa,
the country also boasts of stunning beaches like Zanzibar, picturesque lakes and the beautiful national parks of Serengeti and Ngorongoro
Conservation Area. Struggling to put behind its troubled past Tanazania and Kenya has put Africa on every well traveled persons MUST VISIT list. We
too go here to enjoy a thrilling climb to the top of Kilimanjaro and to enjoy the sublime pleasure of seeing the big five, in their natural habitat...
Kilimanjaro is the world's highest free standing, snow-covered equatorial mountain. Images of the towering snow-covered cone rising majestically
from fertile green foothills have become a powerful motif of Tanzania's extraordinary extremes. One of the most amazing aspects of the mountain in
the present day is the accessibility of its peak to climbers with no mountain climbing equipment or real previous experience of scaling such heights.
The climb is done in three phases. The first is through the tropical forest - dense vegetation between 1850m and around 2800m. Then we move to a
wide expanse of moorland, here the climbing is gentle but oxygen now begins to thin. Even higher over 4000m is the Alpine desert. Here the weather
conditions have swings and only the odd lichen survives above 5000m. Now we are at the final steep push to the summit!

Kenya Classic
Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa, standing at 5895m/19,341 ft., is the
highest peak of Africa and the tallest freestanding mountain in the world.
It was discovered by the west in 1848, when a German missionary named
Johannes Rebmann saw the mountain and explored the area
surrounding it. The mountain intrigues its visitors by its uniqueness. Its
slopes are covered by a variety of vegetation as well as a variety of
ecological systems. Plantations, mostly of coffee, for which Tanzania is
famous, cover its lowest slopes. Higher up lies a tropical rainforest,
followed by heath, moor land, alpine deserts and the ice-capped summit.
• Africa’s highest mountain, one of the seven summit’s
• Unforgettable view from the top
