CLEVELAND - The third annual Amusement Industry Expo is scheduled at the
International Exposition (I-X) Center in Cleveland, Ohio, October 28-30, 1997.
Presented by AIMS International and supported by OABA, NICA, GOSA and SLA,
the show highlights goods and services specific to the outdoor amusement industry.
Designed to be a showmen's showplace, Amusement Industry Expo is a compre
hensive marketplace for the outdoor amusement industry. Amusement Industry
Expo features exhibitors from all areas of the amusement business: rides, conces
sions, trailers, bunk houses, fun houses, midway and arcade games, lighting and
electrical, canvas and tents, plush and novelties and food and beverage preparation.
In addition to the diverse array of exhibitions, the third annual Amusement Industry
Expo will offer an expanded seminar schedule. The seminars will be interactive and
designed to allow participants to share their own experience and knowledge and
to learn from each others. GOSA will sponsor two seminars that will take place on
Wednesday, October 29. The first, scheduled for 1 p.m., is titled "How To Layout A
Food Trailer." The second seminar, "How To Layout A Game Trailer," is scheduled
for 3 p.m. Both seminars will utilize actual trailers for demonstration purposes.
"We are pleased to be able to offer Amusement Industry Expo attendees exciting
educational opportunities," said Eric German, show director. "We have been work
ing hand-in-hand with GOSA to guarantee that tile seminars we are offering bring
added value to their members." GOSA will also hold a regional meeting October
28 at 2 p.m.
Two cocktail parties have been planned for both exhibitors and attendees to enjoy
at Amusement Industry Expo. NICA Cocktail Party will take place on Tuesday,

COMMITTEE REPORTS
TRADE SHOW - The computer projector discussed at the last meeting
was deferred until the October meeting.
HEALTH & SANITATION - Jack Woods has reported that Paul Panico,
Administrator of the Bureau of Local Services with the Ohio Department
of Health, has resigned from his position and will be moving over to the
Department of Agriculture as Assistant Deputy Chief, with the Division
of Food Safety. Paul has been a long-time employee of the Department
of Health and a great supporter of the G.O.S.A. I have personally worked
with Paul through the efforts of the Food Service Advisory Board as well
as on a one-to-one basis in behalf of the needs and wants of the mobile
food service industry for approximately 15 years. I personally would like
to wish Paul great success in his new position at the Department of
Agriculture and r hope to work with him again some day. Thanks for all
Jack Woods
you have done to help the G.O.S.A.
RIDE SAFETY - Ray Prowant reported that two vacancies on this board
are presently being filled. These names will be published in the next
newsletter.
MEMBERSHIP - The membership applications of the following were
approved: Mark A. Smith, Nick Kirlan and Annette Zwiebel of the
B & M Packing Co.
JUNIOR MEMBERSHIP - It was announced that Ken Weber has
provided packets to be mailed to all new Junior Members. He also
submitted this report. Our outing at the IX Amusement Park was a great
success. It was attended by 25 members. Eric German, vice president of
the IX Center, presented the program on the Marketing of the
Amusement Park. This includes television, radio and newspaper adver
tising, as well as how promotions and the marketing packages were put
together. This program would have been good for all of the members, not
just the Juniors. After Mr. German's talk we all had pizza provided by
Kim and Al Bozich of Bates Amusements. The junior members devoured
several pizzas and then spent the rest of the time on the rides. Everyone
seemed to have a good time and it was a good turnout. Our next event
will be at Lima, Ohio on November 7 and 8,1997 at the Holidome. We
will tour Durant Amusements and Woods Concessions. Members will be
notified and an ad will run in the G.O.S.A. Newsletter.
SCHOLARSHIP - Doug Guinsler notified the board that he is working
on the applications for the Kissel Scholarship. Also, checks for the
Otterbacher Scholarship are being sent out. A verification of enrollment
is needed from all recipients.
YEARBOOK - Bill Bush reported that the Yearbook is running behind
schedule. He said that he is having trouble getting calls returned.
BUDGET - Dave Gallapoo reported that notices had been sent to
committee chairmen to submit any changes in spending in the next year.
Treasurer Dave Shives offered to prepare a report at the end of this year
to improve the planning for the coming year.
EXECUTIVE SECRETARY'S REPORT - During the past month [
attended the four Ohio Fair Managers Association Spring meetings held
at Tiffin, North Canton, Zanesville, and Washington Court House.
At Tiffin the dinner was prepared by the Seneca County Junior Fair
Foundation which has raised over a half of a million dollars in twenty
five years for the benefit of the Seneca County Fair and the Seneca
County youth and Junior Fair programs. It was also announced at the dinner
that an anonymous donor had donated $68,000 to the Seneca County
Fair. The Foundation has numerous fund-raising activities throughout the
year: Tiffin Flea Market (one of the largest in Ohio); bulk frozen food sales;
provides workers for the Seneca County Fair gates; sponsors lunch stands
at sales and caters dinners. Over 200 individuals attended this event.
At North Canton over 200 individuals attended the dinner at the
Glenmoor Country Club. The dinner was held in the Great Hall which
was converted from a seminary. The Gothic Architecture of the Great
Hall; the beautiful and very expensive homes that are built around the
Great Hall; and the large golf course that surrounds both the Hall and the
homes made it a day that I will never forget.
At Zanesville over 260 individuals attended the dinner at the Holiday
Inn Convention Center. The editor of the local newspaper was present.
He moved to Ohio recently from California. He loves fairs and takes a
very keen interest in them. Muskingum County and southeast Ohio can
be fortunate to have such a strong supporter in their area.
At Washington Court House over 240 individuals attended the buffet
dinner at the Mahan Building on the Fayette County Fairgrounds. The
ham loaf was the best that I have ever tasted. Three Mom's Catering
provided the meal and did a very good job with no one leaving hungry.
At all four events I placed a G.O.S.A. note pad at each place setting.
They were very well received with over 1,000 being distributed. Reaction
to the awards was also greatly appreciated by those in attendance.
It was pointed out by Mark List, Deputy Director, Ohio Department
of Agriculture, that Labor Day comes early this year, falling on
September I, 1997. Next year it falls Jater on September 7, 1998. This
occurs every seven years in the rotation of the calendar. The Ohio State
Fair will start on August 1, 1997; but will start on August 8, 1998.
Usually all the fairs will follow the same practice in the scheduling of
their dates. Those with rides, games, food and straight sales should make
sure that their contracts reflect the calendar change next year so they do
not have a blank week in their schedule.
r am getting slowly acclimated to my new office tools: computer, laser
plinter and fax copier. All of these items have manuals on how to do
everything. In high school 1 learned how to use the slide rule, typewriter
and adding machine. Now you find the slide rule in museums, typewriters
have been replaced with a computer keyboard, and the adding machine is
now located in the computer as a separate pad. Hopefully, I will have
these tools mastered by the end of the summer.
The fair and festival season will soon be in full swing. I will be visit
ing the fairs and festivals that I did not get to last year. Let us pray for
good weather and an accident-free and safe season. I look forward to
visiting myoid friends and meeting new ones.
