A letter from Michael George
It was over a year ago that I first
wrote about plans for the WYSO 50th
Anniversary celebration. I highlighted
the importance of the WYSO
“family” – that is WYSO members,
parents, alumni, alumni parents,
conductors, coaches, board members,
administrative staff, teachers, and
more. This family had to come together
in multiple ways to make the WYSO
50th Anniversary year a success. That
is exactly what happened.
As the 50th anniversary year winds down, colleagues have asked
me about my favorite WYSO anniversary moment. I don’t have
a quick answer to that question. It requires some time to reflect
on a remarkable series of events this year and the extraordinary
dedication of members of the WYSO family who made them
happen.
As a favorite moment, I might identify the WYSO alumni, 95 strong,
who formed a reading orchestra in Mills Hall on a Saturday morning
in February and played for 2 ½ hours, led by previous WYSO
conductors. Or, another may be attending the WYSO alumni
reception the night before when members of the WYSO “charter”
orchestra of 1966 greeted each other for the first time in 50 years!
Or, a favorite moment may be the message in January from the
Overture Center box office informing us that the 50th Anniversary
Concert scheduled for February 20th was sold out - over
2100 seats!
S PR I NG 2016
Or I might identify the concert dress rehearsal on Friday evening
when I observed the wide eyes but intense focus of over 400
WYSO members as they walked onto the Overture Hall stage for
the first time led by their conductors, coaches, and a first-class
production staff who were handling sound, lighting, staging,
and recording for television. Then they all came together again
on Saturday evening to present a collage concert of continuous
music for two hours that featured four orchestras, a percussion
ensemble, brass ensemble, two chamber string ensembles, video
presentations, and a finale with over 450 performers on stage and
in the aisles of the main floor performing a special arrangement of
Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy.”
These are all special moments. But my absolute favorite moment
actually came at the end of the 50th Anniversary Concert when over
2100 audience members rose as one to give a standing ovation
to everyone on stage, backstage, and scattered throughout the
audience. This led to my favorite moment: seeing the joy and
wonder on the faces of all the young musicians as they accepted
that standing ovation from probably their largest audience ever.
They will remember the feeling forever, and so will I.
My colleague, Richard Wolf, and I have been honored to serve
as co-chairs of WYSO’s 50th Anniversary Celebration. The WYSO
“family” has never been stronger and we are confident that it is
now poised to create many more special moments during the next
50 years. Be proud. YOU are an important part of this WYSO
family.

Looking To The nexT 50 Years
seaT sponsorship
WYSO is extremely excited to offer a new and unique way to connect directly to a WYSO orchestra, a section, and a seat! In the
2016 – 2017 season WYSO will offering the opportunity to sponsor a seat in any of our five orchestras. An annual sponsorship
could be for a section chair, a principal chair or a concertmaster. There are also options to secure a multi-year sponsorship or
permanently endow a seat in honor or in memory of a person.
It’s hard to imagine what the WYSO organization will look like 50 years from now. But if the coming year is any indication,
WYSO’s future is bright. Here is what we have to look forward to.
• A Youth Orchestra Tour to Italy in the summer of 2016
• A summer chamber music camp at Edgewood College
• The inaugural season of Opus One, our newest WYSO String Orchestra
• WYSO Alumni (and sister and brother) Cynthia and Ken Woods return as guest artists with the Youth Orchestra
• A Philharmonia Orchestra trip to Minneapolis for an exchange concert with the Greater Twin Cities Youth Symphonies
• Record enrollment nearing 450 WYSO members
Seat sponsorships provide critically needed revenue to help sustain the highest level of music education and enrichment
possible for the dedicated young musicians of WYSO. Seat sponsorship and other donations help to keep WYSO tuition and
fees affordable so that no one is denied access because of financial circumstances.
When you confirm a pledge as a seat sponsor for an orchestra, the WYSO leadership in turn confirms pledges to you. We
pledge to be good stewards of the funds you provide. We pledge to do our best to inspire, support and connect WYSO
members and their families so that their WYSO experience is truly transformational.
The outpouring of support and enthusiasm for the 50th Anniversary celebration of the WYSO organization has been amazing. I couldn’t be more
optimistic about our future. Each and every one of you reading this newsletter has played a crucial role in our success and you are so very important to
our future. Thank you for being part of the WYSO family. With your support, we will continue to transform lives through the power of music, one child at
a time.
One of the themes for this issue of Notes is “favorite memories.” This begins with the letter from Mike George reflecting on favorite memories of the
50th anniversary weekend in February. On other pages you will find favorite memories shared by WYSO alumni, both conductors and members, that are
reprinted from the 50th Anniversary Commemorative Book.

the studio, and we all played together. It was very moving. She recently sang in
a DCINY concert series at Carnegie Hall in June with 250 people from all over
the globe. She never dreamed of going there, but it was an amazing adventure,
and so much fun! She was married to her husband in July and has been
enjoing their first months together as husband and wife.

BA in Psychology.
Debbie Williamson, Violin, 66’-67’ recently retired after 34 years as concert
master of the Sheboygan Symphony Orchestra. She was a concertmaster in
WYSO under Marvin Rabin.
John Zirbel, Horn, 66’-71’, has been principal horn of the Orchestre
symphonique de Montréal since 1979. A native of Janesville, Wisconsin,
he began studying the horn at age nine with local bandmaster John Iltis.
He graduated from the University of Wisconsin, where he studied with John
Barrows and Douglas Hill. He enjoys teaching and mentoring talented young
horn players both at the Aspen Music Festival and at McGill University’s
Schulich School of Music, where he is an Associate Professor. His former
students play in orchestras across Canada.
richard davis Bass FoundaTion
WYSO is continually blessed to be located in a place with so many other friendly music organizations. The Richard Davis Bass
Foundation has partnered with WYSO to increase the accessibility of music and teaching to young bassists in South Central
Wisconsin. WYSO was recently gifted a high-end string bass and was permanently loaned another high-end string bass from
the Richard Davis Bass Foundation. The string bass is currently being used by Concert Orchestra bassist, Jake Brozyna. In
return for the generous donation, WYSO will be providing $250 in annual scholarships to the Richard Davis Bass Foundation’s
Annual Bass Conference.
We are so extremely grateful to the Richard Davis Bass Foundation for their gift and the opportunity to spread the gift of music
to more young musicians.

YouTh orchesTra Tour oF iTaLY
We are very pleased to announce that we will add a second
string ensemble for ages 8-12 to the WYSO program
beginning in the fall of 2016. The ensemble will be called,
Opus One. This decision reflects a response to our increasing
number of string auditions over the past five years and a
commitment to our stated vision of providing a full range of
innovative instrumental music education and performance
opportunities accessible to ALL dedicated young people.
This Summer, Youth Orchestra will depart for their 2016 tour of
Italy! From July 6 to July 16, seventy nine young musicians, twelve
chaperones, and five staff members will tour through Milan, Verona,
Montecatini, and Rome. Youth Orchestra will perform three concerts at
Tettuccio Spa Park, Andrea della Valle Church, and Castel Gandolfo.
In the pilot year, Opus One will meet 20 weeks during the
academic year, with one performance at the conclusion.
Opus One will focus more on technique than on performance
incorporating instruction on fundamentals of scales, shifting
and bowing in addition to formative ensemble skills experience.
The opportunity will be valuable to all young musicians who are
at the early stages of their studies of a string instrument. Once
established and if demand warrants, Opus One could become
a full program with yearlong rehearsals, sectionals and concerts.
These concerts are a phenomenal way for young musicians to
interact with another culture through the medium of music. WYSO
also uses these tours as an outreach tool for different communities. Our
last concert will be performed with CEIS, the oldest and largest Italian
nonprofit organization committed to providing rehabilitation programs for
people who struggle with addiction.
With the success of our tour to Argentina in 2014, WYSO is committed
to touring internationally every two years. For more information about
our tours or to be kept up to date with our plans for Italy, check out our
website at www.wysomusic.org/our-program/touring.
WYSO is currently interviewing candidates who will serve
as conductor for Opus One. An announcement should be
made by June 1st.
chamBer camp
WYSO is excited to announce the return of its Summer Chamber Music Camp. While very popular in the
1990’s the WYSO Chamber Music Camp was discontinued some years ago. We’ve heard the feedback from
numerous alumni throughout this 50 th anniversary season who recounted some of their favorite memories
while at camp. These stories solidified what was already in the planning stages for the camp’s resurrection.
The five day camp is designed for musicians, age 11-18 who are interested in developing their performance
and preparation skills with peers in a fun and relaxed setting on the campus of Edgewood College. Invited
are all string players and any pre-formed woodwind and brass groups, open to WYSO members and nonmembers, alike. Each day will include two chamber coaching sessions, a master class and/or instrument
class, a large ensemble rehearsal, and an outdoor recreational activity. The camp will conclude with a student
performance in the Edgewood chapel at 4pm.
concerT in The park
The Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestras is proud to be a

of the summer. The Youth Orchestra, consisting of members ages
14 – 18, will perform at Old Sauk Trails Park on a lovely summer

President of Board of Directors, 1980 – 1982 | WYSO Parent, Board Member, Advisor since 1972
It is with great excitement that we announce the Martha Fuguitt Fund for Music. The fund, which has been generously
established by her husband Glenn, and children Gayle and Graham Fuguitt, will offset costs for music rentals and music
purchases for the WYSO Music Library. Members in all orchestras willm benefit from this generous gift.
Martha has been a fervent supporter of WYSO since she first became involved as a WYSO parent when her son
Graham Fuguitt joined the orchestra. She has served as a Board member and advisor since 1972. She also served
as President of the Board of Directors from 1980 – 1982. Martha was an essential part of the WYSO Financial Development Committee and was a key
supporter of the WYSO Play-athon. Over the span of her 42 year affiliation with WYSO, she has served as a passionate and devoted WYSO Director,
Advisor, Director Emeritus, alumni parent, donor and volunteer.
Thank you to Martha and the Fuguitt family for your many decades of support to WYSO!

Enriching Lives for 50 Years
WYSO invites you to become a member of the Marvin Rabin Legacy Society and help preserve orchestral training and
performance opportunities for the talented youth of our region.
Marvin Rabin founded WYSO in 1966 and was the most passionate advocate that youth orchestras worldwide have
ever known. The Marvin Rabin Legacy Society recognizes individuals and families who have placed the Wisconsin Youth
Symphony Orchestras Foundation in their estate plans.
WYSO is grateful for all planned gifts, whatever their size. All we ask is that you notify us that you have included WYSO
in your plans. We want to extend an open invitation to all alumni to join other charter members whose commitment to
sustaining the future of WYSO is recognized by the inclusion of WYSO in their estate plans.

On the morning of Saturday, February 20th , WYSO saw nearly 100 alumni return to Mills Hall to play in an Alumni Orchestra.
The orchestra saw alumni from WYSO’s charter orchestra in 1966 as well as recent alumni who left WYSO last year. The reading session saw the
return of alumni conductors Jim Lattimer, Leyla Sanyer, and Tom Buchhauser take up the baton again as well as WYSO alumnus Mikko Utevskey
who is a graduate student at UW-Madison. The sound that this group made was extraordinary! Some alumni hadn’t touched their instrument in years
while others were seasoned musicians. However, you would have thought this group had been rehearsing together for months. It was a truly moving
experience for everyone involved onstage and off.

Our 50th Anniversary Gala concert on February 20th at Overture Hall, left the sold out house roaring with
excitement. The performance included performances by all four WYSO orchestras, the Percussion Ensemble,
Brass Choir, and two chamber ensembles.
All four orchestras and Percussion Ensemble commissioned new works in honor of the 50th anniversary.
Percussion Ensemble Credo – Ben Whalund
Sinfonietta Sonata for Sinfonietta – Olivia Zeuske
Concert Orchestra Biciclette – Reynard Burns
Philharmonia Orchestra …in Time!... – Donald Fraser
Youth Orchestra A Radiant Spirit – Andrew Kinney
The highlight of the evening was when all four orchestras and the Music Makers Honors Ensembles joined
together for Donald Fraser’s original arrangement of Ode to Joy. Nearly 400 students were on stage and
in the aisles for this stirring and powerful finale!

Brunch
To cap off the weekend of festivities we held a celebration brunch in honor of the last
50 years at Union South. Alumni, board members past and present, friends, and family
gathered one last time to reminisce about the weekend. Both co-chairs of the 50 th
planning committee Dick Wolf and Mike George spoke along with Board President John
Walker. While guests had a chance to catch up, one of WYSO’s woodwind quintets
performed to a captivated audience.

Over a year ago, 50th anniversary planning committees, including
WYSO alumni, discussed possibilities for providing an alumni gift to
WYSO in honor of the 50th anniversary. The idea of establishing a
Guest Artist Fund rose to the top and was approved by the WYSO
board as a special fund “established by WYSO Alumni in 2016 in Honor
of the 50th Anniversary.” In honor of his 30 years of service as WYSO
Music Director, the fund has been specifically named the
James R. Smith Guest Artist Fund.
The Guest Artist Fund will enable WYSO to expand experiences for
young musicians each year by giving them opportunity to work with
experienced professional artists, including WYSO alums. Guest artists
will be scheduled on selected WYSO rehearsal and performance days
to coach sectionals or chamber groups; rehearse or guest conduct
an orchestra; perform with an orchestra, or provide master classes
for WYSO members. Already during this 50th anniversary year Vicki
Powell, Viola, Nancy Goeres, Bassoon, and Mike Truesdell,
percussion have soloed with WYSO. Andrew Balio, trumpet has
coached ensembles and provided master classes; and Andrew
George has rehearsed the Philharmonia as a guest conductor. While
continuing to consider WYSO alumni as guest artists, after the 50th
Anniversary year the selection of artists will expand to include other
outstanding professionals.
The fund is particularly desirable as a WYSO Alumni gift because a
donation can be any amount as a one-time gift or multi-year pledge.
You can help WYSO alumni to establish a legacy by providing a gift
now and becoming one of the “charter contributors” to the
James R. Smith Guest Artist Fund.
“My favorite WYSO memory
was the Philharmonia tour to Wild
Rose. The crowd was welcoming and
appreciative-we loved performing for
them. Then they gave our tour buses
a celebratory, lights-flashing, police
escort as we drove out of town!
What a feeling.”
“These great experiences for students
are only possible with the coordinated effort of
parents, staff and boards. Their dedication and
hard work over fifty years have brought us to where
we are today – a well-established, well-respected
organization. You all deserve a standing ovation.
WYSO has evolved into one of the best youth
orchestra programs in the nation, and in the world.
That’s worth celebrating.”
