Note from the French Ambassador
The Embassy of France to the Philippines, the Alliance Française de Manille, the Office of the
Presidential Adviser for Environmental Protection, Lafarge-Holcim and the National Museum are
proud to present, for the first time in the Philippines, a seminar entitled “Heritage Conservation,
Contemporary Architecture and Urbanism” that will explore and showcase the importance of
preserving one’s built heritage and cultural landscape, the different 21st century innovations in
architecture, as well as the inspiring new ways of having a more sustainable and adaptive modern
environment in the face of drastic changes in our climate.
Together with the Pavillon de l’Arsenal (the French Centre for Architecture and Urbanism)
and Jacques Ferrier Architectures, the renowned French architectural firm chosen by the
French Government for the creation of the French Pavilion in the Shanghai 2010 World
Expo, the project invites French experts in the fields of heritage conservation, architecture and
urbanism to the Philippines to share their views with leading Filipino experts and gain
knowledge from them through several conferences in different cultural and educational institutions.
Presentations will cover various topics that are relevant in the Philippine context,
such as built heritage policies and innovations to improve the daily lives of those living in urban
areas.
The National Museum is the host venue of the seminar, with the support of participating academic
institutions, government and private agencies from March 15-16, 2016. It will be moderated by Prof.
Eric Zerrudo, Director of the Centre for Conservation of Cultural Property and Environment in the
Tropics of the University of Santo Tomas.
Invited to this event to share their expertise are Mr. Jacques Ferrier, founder of Jacques Ferrier
Architectures, and Mr. Etienne Sintive, heritage architect from Lille, France.
On the occasion of this seminar, three exhibitions on heritage and contemporary architecture
in France will be inaugurated in three separate locations in Manila. Leading them is the grand
exhibition of Jacques Ferrier entitled Jacques Ferrier: A Vision for the Sensual City to be hosted at the
Old Senate Hall at the National Museum of the Philippines on March 15. This will be followed by
the 100% Paris exhibit at the University of the Philippines-Diliman and the Architecture=Sustainable
exhibit at the School of Design and Arts of the De La Salle-College of St. Benilde, with both exhibits
to be inaugurated on March 17. Workshops will also be conducted at both venues, as well as at the
University of Santo Tomas, on the same day.
The French experts will also meet with the Philippines’ topmost policy makers in the fields of
heritage conservation, contemporary architecture and urbanism. They will participate to in site visits
in Intramuros and Escolta, followed by round table discussions. Through these site visits, both France
and the Philippines will be able to exchange ideas and establish lasting networks to come up with
recommendations and solutions related to architecture and urbanization.
I would like to thank all the French and Philippine institutions who have trusted the Embassy of France
in the Philippines and the Alliance Française de Manille in pursuing this project. My deepest gratitude
goes to all the French and Philippine presenters who have contributed their time and knowledge for
the seminar, and lastly, to the Philippine public for supporting our events and assuring us that all our
efforts are well-appreciated.

Opening on March 17, 2016, 6:00 PM
Exhibition runs until May 14, 2016
In the exhibition Architecture = Sustainable architects convey their
understanding of architecture with an aim to build sustainably by
showing current projects in the Ile-de-France
Exclusive film interviews are used to explain the thirty projects and
are designed to be thought provoking as well as innovative and to
hint at the future of cities and their buildings.
Using these thirty projects, the exhibition presents the current and
future measures and solutions to be applied at various levels. The
seven criteria for analysis used to deconstruct these projects are
based on the eighty European examples which are also presented
in this exhibition. Urbanization, implementation, morphology,
material and spatial concepts, systems and performance allow
visitors to gain an understanding of environmental issues with a
global outlook which places technical plans into an urban context
and which, in turn, takes the crowded city as its starting point for
new projects.

The exhibition 100% Paris Architecture - Urban development 2000
- 2012, created by the Pavillon de l’Arsenal in the occasion of
the Paris - Berlin tandem, presents a panorama of Parisian
architecture of the beginning the 21st century.
It shows an overview of Parisian architecture of the early 21st
century. How do Paris, Berlin and other capital cities in the world
dealing the societal challenges of: collective and social housing,
mix-use, creation of public spaces, reclaiming of brown sites, the
quest of energy efficiency in cities.
Through maps, plans, photographs and prospects for architects,
100 projects illustrate the new responses to the construction and
development of metropolises, inviting an urgent reflection on
major societal challenges, such as collective and social housing,
public spaces, functional and social mix and energy.
