Americans with
Disabilities Act (A.D.A)
This landmark civil rights
act went into effect in 1992.
It is a significant step forward to make our
society’s services and opportunities fully
available to all Americans by combating
barriers and prejudices that confront those
of us with disabilities. RARA is committed
to implementing the intent and spirit of this
legislation. Those who may need
assistance in order to participate and
enjoy our programs should contact Ron
Jewell at least two weeks in advance at
248-656-8308 to discuss any necessary
accommodations or concerns.
Persons with disabilities are invited to
participate in all programs offered through
RARA. We ask that you inform us on your
registration of any special assistance that
you may need.
For more information, call RARA at 248-656-8308, or visit us on the web at www.rararecreation.org

The Dragon Academy is a summer camp intensive program that
mentors boys and girls with ADHD to train their dragons (barriers
to success); master their emotions, confront academic challenges,
and attain skills to deal with unfriendly classmates and bullying.
Campers will discover their strengths and use them to meet life’s
challenges. Adventurous physical activities form the backdrop to a
creative schedule designed to increase social and friendship skills,
self-empowerment, self-confidence, and the ability to bully-proof
oneself. The week will include nature hikes, along with games like
capture the flag, obstacles courses, and kick ball. The boys and girls
will engage in educational discussions, social-skill charades, team
building, cartooning, and role playing. We will also use movies to tie
into lessons about conflict, bullying, friendship, success barriers, and
being an empowered child. This camp will help boys and girls be a
“master of their actions and not a prisoner of their reactions.”
Each Friday there is a Parent Demonstration the last ½ hour. Camp
includes an emailed handout of information the campers are learning. Paraprofessional support is not offered for this program. This
camp is geared for individual students who have the ability and are
capable of performing independently “but we are highly experienced
in dealing with ADHDers!”
New Rules Dodge Ball
New twists on an old game. Modified rules and
game varieties allow kids to enjoy dodge ball in a
safety, softer and less threatening way. Versions
include Capture the Dodge Ball, Jail Break Dodge Ball, 4 Square
Dodge Ball, Bracket Ball and more! No class May 27.

A Boy’s and Girl’s World of Friendship!
This week of camp will help our ADHD boys with
understanding & learning strategies for dealing
with situations when friends don’t always act like
friends. Campers will learn the do’s and don’ts of friendships, how
to be assertive with friends, and how to handle conflict. We will also
be exploring what it means and takes to be a friend. We will explore
“hot and cold” friend behavior, relational aggression, hurtful actions
from friends, as well as friends who suddenly don’t want to “be
friends” anymore. This camp will help boys and girls make friends,
keep friends, be a friendly person and deal with sticky issues and
what to do when they experience inconsistent friendship.

Judo, or the “Gentle Way” is an unarmed martial way that originated in Japan,
is an Olympic sport and can be practiced by children, men and women of all ages.
Mutual welfare and respect is a guiding principle of judo and the sport emphasizes discipline and will improve your fitness level on both the cardio and strength
elements. Judo is a competitive sport with local competition and in addition to
learning how to throw and pin an opponent, judokas learn how to fall, improve
their balance, develop confidence, and mental strength. There is no striking, or
kicking involved and it is possible to earn ranks via a belt promotion system that
recognizes both proficiency in training, as well as competition results. In addition
to being tremendous exercise, judo is also a very practical means of self defense
and this structured program will be taught by a 5th degree black belt certified by
the US Judo Federation. In addition to being introduced to the sport of judo, you
will leave this class with a vastly improved fitness level so you are guaranteed a
positive physical result. Link to usjf.com for more information.
About the Instructor: Steve DeRaedt
I have been practicing and teaching judo for 42 years and am also the instructor
at the OU Judo Club. I am currently studying for my third degree at OU and am
about 3/4 on the way to achieving a BS in Exercise Science. I am a fifth degree
black belt in judo and am certified to teach by the US Judo Federation and was
President of Konan (Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Indiana region) for last 6
years and have a current clean background check.

Karate
Sanchin-Ryu Junior Karate and Self Defense
Sanchin-Ryu’s Child Safety (for kids 5-14 years old)
Registration for these classes can take place anytime.
These classes will start before our actual first day of registration.
Gain life skills while learning how to deal with bullies! Class topics include
a range of personal safety strategies from how to handle a bully without
fighting, to how to identify and protect yourself from a stranger. Each week
a personal safety topic is covered and specific techniques are practiced.
These classes provide your child with the necessary techniques to enable,
broaden and advance their personal safety strategies.
Tremendous self-confidence is achieved!
Program Notes:
• The art of self-defense (Sanchin-Ryu) is taught, which provides
great exercise, entertainment and encourages
each person to develop a greater level of discipline in his or her life.
• Program is run in a positive, structured class environment.
• Parents are encouraged to attend.
Adult & Family Sanchin-Ryu /
Advanced Youth Sanchin-Ryu
The art of Sanchin-Ryu is taught in a way that allows
adult students to grow and learn at their own pace.
We’ve found that this builds self-confidence, helps
understand stress management and increases composure and self-defense awareness. This program
is also a great family activity! Common sense selfdefense ideas and techniques are examined and instructed. The Advanced Youth Sanchin-Ryu program
is held in conjunction with this program. Youth students ranking Green Belt (2nd level) and above continue their Sanchin-Ryu training.

week, reservations thru RARA) then an EIGHT WEEK schedule of
games. Games and Practices are at Hart Middle School.
Registration is going on NOW and the Registration Deadline for the
end of the INITIAL registration process is Friday, September 3rd.
Teams are formed by school and area. Parent volunteer coaches

Junior Golf - Play & Learn League
Junior golf at the Myth is an ideal place for a young golfer to learn
the basics of the golf game in a fun environment. Many of the junior
golfers at the Myth return the next season to join again. The junior
golf program starts later in the morning, so the kids get a chance to
enjoy their lazy summer. Kids also receive lunch with the sessions.
The junior golfers are grouped with instructors and walk to their starting tees together. Myth teaches the basics of golf and many junior
golfers make good friends and look forward to the next season to
meet again. Children ages 7 to 13 years old are invited one day a
week for the total junior golf (6) sessions. The junior golf runs from 11
to 2 p.m. and junior golfers must have their own equipment. Juniors
can choose to register for the Monday or Wednesday class and each
day includes lunch and group instruction focusing on a different point
each week.
Junior golfers will be paired with friends upon request. Parents will
need to drop off their junior golfers with their golf bags behind the pro
shop to meet on the practice green. Groups will be formed according
to age and skill levels.

Junior Golf Development Camps
The Jim Norgart Junior Development Camps
offer four 4-day sessions designed to help
students of all skill levels improve their golf
game. The program will teach students the
proper fundamentals of grip, stance, and
posture, as well as provide an understanding of swing path and clubface and alignment skills. Each student will learn to apply
these skills to wood and iron play, putting,
chipping, and bunker play in both practice
and playing conditions. Also included in our
program will be video analysis of each students swing using state of the art technology, as well as discussions
of the rules and golf appreciation and etiquette.
The camps are designed for junior golfers of all skill levels, grades
6-12. The central focus will be building the skills necessary to enjoy the game through greater understanding of and proficiency in
the fundamentals of golf. Improvement of the short game and long
game are the specific goals of the camps. Within each session, students will be grouped according to ability level and/or age. This allows instruction to be more finely tuned to the needs of a particular
group within a given session. Therefore more advanced students
will not be held back and less experienced students will not be left
behind. Each session includes: professional instruction, green fees,
range balls, video analysis, lunch and snack, and prizes.

Dance
RARA School for the Performing
Arts program offers a wide variety
of dance classes (preschool, tap,
jazz, lyrical, ballet, hip hop, and
contemporary) for children and
adults beginning at 2 ½ years of age.
We teach these classes in terms.
Our RECITAL TERM begins each
September when we enroll students
for the two semester program, ending with the “grand finale” – our
recitals in June presented at a local high school.
Dancers can enjoy non-recital classes taught in 8-12 week terms
throughout the year, FALL, WINTER/SPRING AND SUMMER. The
SUMMER TERM, provides students the opportunity to strengthen
skills or sample new classes in a short 8 week session begins each
June.
THE NEXT OPEN ENROLLMENT FOR RECITAL DANCE
CLASSES will be held in August during our Fall registration.
Annual auditions will be held on June 14 and 15 for our 2013-2014
COMPETITION and ENSEMBLE classes. See page 55.
For more information on the proper class selection or level, call
248.656.8350.

center features four classrooms, classroom viewing and large
parent waiting area. (remove anything else that is in that section)
INSTRUCTORS: Our dance teachers are trained, mature, and
sensitive to the needs of both children and adults. They teach
to develop technique and self-confidence, not stress, enhancing

Shakespeare in the Park, The Two Gentlemen of Verona
Full Impact Theater, Teens 13 – 19
Full Impact Theater offers its annual summer Shakespeare-inthe-Park intensive/production with The Two Gentlemen
of Verona*. Teens are invited to participate in our acting intensive and production, which distinguishes
itself from other theater groups by educating its
members in all aspects of theater (not just acting), using the play as its vehicle for education.
Members participate in our process that’s designed
to educate them—not only in theater, but in all
facets of life. We at Full Impact Theater believe that
training in the theater arts is an invaluable advantage in today’s world. Through the integrated
arts discipline of theater performance,
teens will develop self-confidence,
personal-expression skills, integrity, a
sense of responsibility, and problemsolving and time-management skills.
Theater provides a safe and nurturing venue for teens to explore life’s
challenges while working cooperatively with others. Through theater,
teens learn to act on their dreams.
Full Impact Theater guarantees each
registered and eligible** member
a role. (Our cast is capped with a
maximum number, so register early.)
Our distinct auditions serve to match each
member with the role that best fits him or her. (No advance preparation is needed to audition. Just come and participate.) During The
Two Gentlemen of Verona, actors will not only learn their lines—
they’ll learn what the words Shakespeare wrote in the play mean,
in addition to the historical context of the times. Our members love
Shakespeare and aren’t intimidated by The Bard—because our process allows them to “get it.” This wonderful gift carries over to their
future, when they’re reading Shakespeare in school or on their own.
Our Shakespeare-in-the-Park auditions, orientation, rehearsals, and performances will all take place outdoors in Rochester
Municipal Park, near the Kiwanis Shelter, rain or shine. Auditions are Monday, June 10, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and ori-

entation is Tuesday, June 11, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. (Attendance by teens and teens under 18 with an accompanying parent
or guardian is mandatory—no exceptions.) Rehearsals are
Tuesday through Thursday, 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. beginning June 17. (Please note, July 4 week rehearsals
will be Monday through Wednesday.) Performances
will be Friday through Sunday, August 2 through 4.
Full Impact Theater is a full-volunteer organization.
We depend entirely on our members and their families to make each production a success. Therefore, we require each actor/family to volunteer 15
hours during the course of the production. We
offer choices of assisting anywhere from
costumes to concessions. (This policy is
nonnegotiable.) For more detailed information about Full Impact Theater or
our summer intensive, please visit our
website, www.FullImpactTheater.org,
or email [email protected].
* While it is Shakespeare, The
Two Gentlemen of Verona may not
be suited to every family. Full Impact Theater performs unabridged
Shakespeare, no contemporary
scripts. We ask that each teen/family read The Two Gentlemen of Verona
prior to registering so there are no thematic or language surprises. Full Impact Theater’s
teens perform substantive works, and we do not alter our scripts.

complete eligibility requirements.

Raising Rochester
Urban Gardens, Healthy Harvests
Learn about the organic, bio-intensive, and bio-sustainable gardening methods used in Raising Rochester, the most unique community
gardening/healthy living program in the nation. The program’s square
foot raised bed gardens started dotting the local landscape in 2012
and will be spreading like wildfire in 2013. Learn how you can help local
children and people in need of healthier food and information about
healthy living. No experience needed – just a desire to help those
less fortunate. Come and find out more about the program, volunteer
to host a garden, sponsor a garden or help maintain the gardens.
