Into
the
Woods
Welcome from the President
Greetings to everyone. We are very glad to have you with us for
the production of Into the Woods. Our cast and crew, under the
direction of Mr. Mark Webb and Technical Director Mr. Brad Archer,
has been working for the past several months to bring this play to
you. As always, you can expect to see an outstanding production.
The talent, creativity, and attention to detail that characterizes every
Northeast play are all evident in this production. The play itself, a
Stephen Sondheim musical score, has won numerous awards since its
Broadway debut in 1987.
We hope, too, that you may visit with us again soon for any of our
upcoming events. Graduation will be held this year on May 15, 2015
at the Rainsville Agri-Business Center, and this year’s commencement
speaker is Dr. Mark Heinrich, Chancellor of the Alabama Community
College System. The public always is invited to attend this colorful,
distinguished event. The college also will hold its annual Latino Festival
on campus on June 6, 2015. The Festival features Latino foods, music,
dance, and arts and crafts. The Latino Festival has grown into one
of Alabama’s most outstanding and unique events. Frequently check
the Northeast Events Calendar on our home page at www.nacc.edu.
There is always something of interest going on at Northeast, particularly
this year as we celebrate the college’s 50th Anniversary.
Thank you all for attending Into the Woods. The Fine Arts are an
integral part of our college mission, and we greatly appreciate your
support of Northeast Alabama Community College and our theater.
We hope to see you on campus again soon!
Sincerely,
Dr. David Campbell

Into the Woods is a paradox. It is for children, and it is for adults. It is both very
comical and very serious. It is light and dark, superficial and utterly significant, fantasy and
reality, as well as happy and sad. In short, it is pure genius!
The woods! An enchanting journey awaits all those who enter! Children, adults,
child-like adults, and adult-like children can all be found when you journey “Into the
Woods!” This play is a delight for audiences of all ages because it charms us all with the
opportunity to re-visit so many of the fairy tale characters of our youth! It is a wonder for
children as their imaginations carry them into the woods on their own fantastical journeys
alongside Cinderella, Rapunzel, Little Red, princes, wolves, witches, Jack and his journey
to the land of the Giants, and more! The enchanting side of this story will have younger
audience members spellbound from beginning to end!
Ahhh….but there are two sides to “this” telling of Grimm’s fairy tales! There are
challenges, dangers, and complications along the path through “these” woods that are
meant for the adults in the audience. Of course adults can enjoy the charms of the lighter
side of these whimsical tales, but there is much, much more to this story than meets the eye.
In fact, if Act I ends with “happy ever after”, which it does, Act II begins with what happens
after…..“happy ever after”! And therein lies quite another story.
The “woods” is a fantasy land of wish fulfillment for most of the characters throughout
Act I. In Act II the trials and challenges of real life begin to confront our characters as
they face many of the difficulties with which we are often confronted in our own lives as
adults. The characters become more mature as they seek fulfillment of new and different
wishes perhaps more realistic than the fanciful wishes they started with in Act I. The show is
particularly entertaining to adults because we get the best of both worlds. The charm of
the fairy tales of our youth nourishes the “child” within us all, yet we have the sophistication
of Act II to appeal to our adult side! What more could an adult wish for?
There are sooo…many wonderful morals of which we are reminded in the story for
young and old alike. “Careful what you wish for, wishes come true!” Also, “Sometimes the
things you most wish for are not to be touched!” In other words, sometimes what we get is
not what we thought it would be. The morals range from the most child-like “never talk to
strangers” to the most adult “wishes come true but not for free”. The charm and humor, with
which all these morals are conveyed, is just pure icing on the cake!
Please join us on this magical journey Into the Woods with an exceptional cast,
crew, and designers all of whom are and have been working incredibly hard to bring this
special story to life in a spectacular way just for YOU! Many thanks to everyone who has
contributed in any way to this production or our theatre program this year, last year, ever
before, or who may in the future! As always, our deep gratitude for the undying support
and encouragement of our president Dr. David Campbell, who is our leader and our
biggest fan!
I hope you will have a delightful, whimsical, charming time at Into the Woods and
“my wish” for all of you is that when you leave our theatre, you will leave “Happy ever
after!”

Elsewhere in the woods, Red Riding Hood is surprised by
a Wolf, who persuades her to take a short detour, while
Jack sells Milky-White to the Baker for five beans. At the
cottage, the Wolf has swallowed both Grandmother and
the young girl. Jack goes up the beanstalk. Cinderella’s
Prince commiserates with his brother, who’s in similar agony
over Rapunzel. However, the pieces are falling into place
for the Baker and his wife: the cow, a strand of Rapunzel’s
hair, Red Riding Hood’s cape. The Witch, furious that her
daughter Rapunzel is seeing a Prince, ends up chopping
off her hair. The Prince has spread pitch on the stairs to
trap Cinderella. A giant is pursuing Jack.
Alas, everything turns out for the best: the Baker produces
the ingredients, the ugly old Witch mixes her potions and
restores her beauty, the Baker’s Wife becomes pregnant,
Jack and his cow resume their friendship. Cinderella and
Rapunzel marry their Princes. Everyone lives happily ever
after, except for those hateful stepsisters, of course!
Once upon a time - later ... despite one or two quibbles
everyone is content - until, suddenly, the Baker’s house is
reduced to rubble. The only clue: a huge footprint.
Back into the woods they go - except Cinderella’s and
Rapunzel’s Princes who, marital bliss notwithstanding,
have come across Sleeping Beauty and the equally
unwakeable Snow White, two new maidens who again
have them in agony. But, for one of them, there’ll be no
need for a messy divorce. A Giant - actually, a giantess
- is on the rampage, eager to avenge her husband’s
death, and she carelessly tramples Rapunzel to death.
The Witch begins a lament for her daughter and turns on
the Narrator because she doesn’t like the way he’s telling
the story. Only after she’s tossed him to the Giantess
does it dawn on them that the story is now out of control.
They begin to blame each other. The Witch scatters a
few beans and disappears in a puff of smoke. The Baker
decides it is time to take responsibility. Devising a plan
to slay the Giantess, the Baker, Cinderella, Red Riding
Hood and the others comfort each other. When peace
is finally restored to the woods, the Baker begins to tell
his son the story - “Once upon a time... and share what
he has learned.

Wishing begins our tale! Cinderella wishes to go to the
King’s Festival, Jack wishes his cow would give him some
milk, the Baker and his Wife wish for a child. However,
fortune does not seem to favor these poor souls until the
Witch has an offer. She will end the couple’s barrenness
if the Baker can find four crucial ingredients for a magic
potion: “the cow as white as milk, the cape as red as
blood, the hair as yellow as corn, the slipper as pure as
gold.” Accompanied only by six beans from his father’s
jacket, the Baker sets off into the woods; so does Jack,
to sell his cow; and Cinderella, to visit her mother’s grave.
