Fun – Fly 23 Jun 2014

Under overcast skies and the threat of rain 22 pilots attended the June
Fun Fly. The event featured two maiden flights, two devastating crashes, a
solo flight, and a first ever group photo (Shown Above). Maiden flights
included Pete Dubree’s new Value Hobby Giant Easy Stick and Shaun Healy
Senior’s new Aeroworks Pitts Python Biplane. Both commanded the
attention of the crowd.
Pete’s smaller Sweet Stik crashed into oblivion on the downward arc of a
square loop when the wings folded. Pete put to many G’s on it. Chuck
crashed his Ultrastick next to the runway. Brent Vannes’ eye in the sky
helped the recovery team locate pieces of Pete’s Sweet Stik in the distant
field.
Dennis Barnes stopped by to meet the club and talk about returning to
flying after a 15 year hiatus bringing a band new Big Stik 60. The club
helped get it flying and after a few flights on the buddy box under Bill Ponseigo’s careful guidance, Dennis
was soloing. Welcome back Dennis!
Meanwhile new member Tony Hand was on hand for his first ARCS Fun Fly. Bert Hudson brought a NoseArt Designs tool box with B-17 art that is surely to be the envy of the club. Bert uses it as his battery box.
The most beautiful plane on scene was a Hobby King Dago Red P-51D. Mateo and Mario’s P-51(s) chased
one another in the sky while brother Luca raced his RC Car in the parking lot.
Manfred and Sherry Amann treated everyone to Rudy’s BBQ; Richard Sanders brought fried chicken, and
Tom Richards a bag of sausage biscuits. Of course there was the usual assortment of goodies too. And the
club donated 91 pounds of food for the monthly food drive. Finally, the highlight of the day was the first
ever Monthly Fun Fly Group Photo. A more handsome a group of RC pilots could not be found anywhere in
south Texas!

June 17, 2014 – President Bill Ponseigo called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. The May 2014 minutes
were read. A motion was made to accept the Minutes. Approved. Treasurer’s Report was read. A motion
was made to accept the Treasurer’s Report. Approved.

ANNOUNCEMNETS: The Fun Fly is Sunday, June 22, 2014 from 10am to 2pm. Bring Dough Nuts and
whatever. Fly and bring food for the Food Bank!
OLD BUSINESS:If you want a club shirt, check with Eric Amundsen, he will take your order. Shirts are $22.
Extended sizes are $2 higher. There is no minimum order. If you want a shirt, call Eric. Hats are $15. New
members, hats are free.
The Club has goal to donate at least a 1000 lbs. food to the Food Bank this year. We have contributed 400
lbs. through May. At tonight's ARCS meeting, Doc Ball donated $100 to the food bank. Thank You Doc!! We
continue to need over 100 lbs. /month to pass last year’s contributions. Keep up the good work, folks!
The Newsletter for May 2014 looked great! Pete, you really did another fantastic job. If you do not get the

NEW BUSINESS:ARCS is scheduling a Club picture for October 26, 2014. We want to get everyone to come
out to the field for a group shot. We want to preserve history and get together and maybe tell a few stories.
Come out even if you don’t fly. Details of the event will follow. Mark your calendars!
Bill Ponseigo provided a brief history of ARCS (last 7 years at Cannon Field) to the all the members present.
This included runway placement, pavilion construction and electrification. He emphasized that ARCS would
not be what it is today without the hard work done by the Club members. They have donated over $8000 in
supplies build the pavilion with electricity and paid dues 2 years in advance to finance the asphalt and
paving. These are truly remarkable feats. Just ask a Club member to get things done and 10 or 15 will show
up to make it happen. Thanks to all! We have the best flying sight in the area.
The Club DOES NOT have a trash service. If you bring something to the field take it home. If you empty a
fuel can, take it home. If you drink a soda, take the can home. If you crash an airplane, pick up the pieces
and take them home. We have large trash bags for that purpose.
SAFETY (Repeat)Taxiing in the pit area is dangerous! Keep it to a bare minimum, especially when they are
full. Taxi or better yet, carry your airplane to the nearest runway entrance. After landing, shut down your
airplane at the Taxiway hold lines. Be Safe. Fly and have fun!
CRASH OF THE MONTH:
Tom Richards was flying his F-22 Rapter and was really having fun. As he approached the area near the
pond, the Rapter’s engine quit. Tom ran out of airspeed and ideas and snapped into the ground. The F-22
was a black bag dumpster special. The post mortem showed that the wires from the battery pack had
chaffed and caused a short.
Pete DuBree was out flying his Big Sweet and Lo Stick. He was really having fun when the airplane just quit
flying. The 35cc Sweet and Lo Stick smacked the ground and broke into many small pieces. The battery
pack in the plane had become unplugged.
Jim Keck was flying his V-tailed Super Sport 40 over the field behind the pond. Things were fine until he
approached the tree line. Suddenly all radio control was lost. Not even the fail safe worked. The Spektrum
receiver just died. The batteries check 6.0 volts under load.
The winner is Pete DuBree!
SHOW AND TELL:No one brought anything in for Show and Tell.
RAFFLE:The monthly raffles are designed to break even. The money is tracked each month. Any access is
used for the Christmas Party Raffle. Special thanks go out to Hobby Town for providing the raffle prizes to
the Club at a reduced price.
