Poppers Ban May Only Last Three Months
Parliament voted to approve a blanket ban on ‘legal highs’ last month, prohibiting the sale of all ‘psychoactive substance’. While
the bill included a ban on the sale of poppers, the government has now laid out plans to review medical evidence relating to their
use. The ban on poppers comes into effect in April and anyone found guilty of selling or even giving them away for free from April
could face a jail sentence of up to seven years. Pending the outcome of the review, poppers could be legal again by July, just three
months after they were outlawed.
Karen Bradley, a Conservative Whip, is leading the independent review relating to the use of poppers. Tory MP Mike Freer, a
prominent voice from within the backbench speaking out against the ban, and is set to meet with the Bradley ahead of the review.
“Given how the numbers were stacking up (including Northern Irish MPs voting for the ban), there was no prospect of an
exemption being secured during the debate,” Freer told Gay Star News. “It was essential to get the best outcome and the evidence
based review, including relationship implications, is an important step forward. I doubt sufficient evidence is there and it means
poppers should be exempt by the end of July. That’s what I and colleagues are working on”
British LGBT Awards Nominations
A host of famous faces are
urging the public to nominate
their favourite LGBT personalities
ahead of this year’s British LGBT
Awards. Celebrities including breakfast TV presenter Lorraine
Kelly, Eastenders’ actress Maddy Hill, Dustin Lance Black and
Big Brother’s Bit on The Side favourite Rylan Clark are amongst
those to appear in a new film urging people to nominate their
LGBT heroes and straight allies. Dubbed Britain’s ‘Gay Oscars’,
the red carpet extravaganza takes place on 13th May 2016 at
London’s Grand Connaught Rooms. The awards pay tribute to
the individuals and organisations that have demonstrated an
outstanding commitment to promoting equality and diversity.
This year’s event will be the second annual British LGBT
Awards which previously ran for four years as the ‘Out in the
City and G3 magazine awards’. A total of fifteen awards will
be presented, including Celebrity of the Year, Straight Ally of
the Year, Inspirational Role Model, Rising Star and Lifetime
Achievement. Previous winners have included Tom Daley, Kylie
Minogue, Daniel Radcliffe, Graham Norton, Paul O’Grady,
Stephen Fry and BBC broadcaster Jane Hill.
Rylan, who also scooped ‘LGBT celebrity’ at this year’s
awards, says the event shines a light on those blazing a trail
for LGBT people. He said: “Winning a British LGBT was one of
this year’s highlights. The event plays a huge part in promoting
LGBT rights. Things are getting better for gay people but there’s
still a lot more to do which is why the public must submit their
nominations.”
Voting opens 17th February 2016 and the new British LGBT
Awards film, featuring the celebrity supporters, can be found at

Local HIV Charity celebrate 25th anniversary
Positive East, London’s largest HIV Charity, celebrates its silver jubilee this month,
having reached 25 years. The charity was founded in the midst of the AIDS
epidemic, when a small group of determined people came together and turned a
disused public swimming baths on Mile End Road into a beacon of hope and care.
“We have come a long way in 25 years,” said Mark Santos, the Charity’s Director. “And as the needs of people living with HIV have evolved, so the services we have provided them have changed. We now do more counselling than
anything else and help people to come to terms with a condition that they will grow old with. Sadly there is still a lot
of HIV related stigma. Whilst medicine has improved enormously in the last quarter of a century, societal attitudes
haven’t kept pace and people still face rejection, isolation and discrimination. So as long as people need us, we will
be there to help them.”

How To Pull A DJ
Dylan Jones’ guide to getting it in with the city’s most dashing disc jockeys
DJs have a lot of clout and status on the gay scene.
They’re at all the best parties, know all the best people, and most importantly, they get DRINKS TICKETS.
But we can’t all be DJs (although it seems most of us have tried). So next best thing? PULL ONE.
Dylan Jones knows all the ins and outs, so to speak. He’s pulled at least ten DJs in the last four months.
So take note because he knows. And besides, if Rita Ora can do it, it can’t be that hard.
Wear tight
jeans
Or even better, tight short shorts.
But only if you’ve got good legs and
a good bum. This can also apply to
pulling city workers, bar staff, flyer
distributers, minor MPs, cleaners,
builders, landlords, JustEat delivery
men, soap actors, promoters, or
kebab shop employees. Depends
on how tight the jeans are really.
And how good your bum is.
Say their
beats are
totes sick
Even if they’re playing
early 90’s trip-hop slash
garage, badly mixed
with an FKA Twigs
bootleg b-side.
Know a BIT about music
To be honest, this isn’t essential really. And I use the term “music” loosely. It doesn’t matter what
music you’re into actually, you just need to know the right terminology and have the ability to
bullshit. As long as you know phrases like “spin”, “BPM”, “garage revival” and “crossfade”, and say
them in various combinations, you’ll be fine.
Sit on Grindr in a coffee
shop on Kingsland Road
It will probs happen after an hour or so

Don’t be too
eager
Wear weird
jewellery
DJs like people who are laid
back and just, like, chill. So
don’t try too hard to talk to
them. If it’s summer, wear
sunglasses and demurely sip
a drink from behind them.
And don’t dance too hard to
their music either. Just sort
of gyrate a bit. Dance like
Victoria Beckham dances. Not
how Buffy dances.

*takes selfie*
Go to Field Day
Festival
Always a good talking
point. I wore a homemade
second-hand Aztec/Navaho
culturally appropriated
bejewelled tortoise necklace
to Dalston Superstore once.
It went down a storm. DJs
usually wear weird jewellery
too, so you can compare
notes. “Oh, you got yours
from Camden Market? My
friend Pryanka gave me
mine. She makes and sells
topaz pendants to support
her unpaid internship at
Dazed & Confused. This one
means ‘transcendentalism’.”
Smoke
cigarettes
DJs have ALWAYS been to Field Day, and it’ll
come up in conversation at some point. How
they came up on a pill during Savages, or
borrowed a Rizla from Ten Walls. Buy yourself
a ticket, and go, and then you can talk about
it too. ALSO, actually being AT Field Day is
a good way to pull a DJ, because, as before
stated, they all go to Field Day. It’s a win win.
Smoking areas are the best
place to get chatting to DJs.
All DJs smoke. And when they
pop out for a fag between
mixes, it’s a great opportunity
to catch them when there isn’t
a basic bitch called Tabitha in
their face, thinking she’s edgy
because she’s requesting Jessie
Ware. You can have a chat,
have a smoke, and then coyly
ask when their set finishes.
Be friends with a celebrity
This helps. Although it depends on the celebrity. In fact, the
calibre of the celebrity is in direct correlation with the DJ you
pull. If you’re mates with Brian Dowling, you’ll pull a DJ with
gelled spiky hair, who wears a v-neck t-shirt, neon beads, and
plays things like Heaven by DJ Sammy. Or Paris To Berlin by
Infernal. If you’re friends with, say, Suki Waterhouse, or Chloe
Sevigny, you’ll pull a DJ who wears vintage Brick Lane finds
paired with Vivienne Westwood couture and plays cuttingedge electro acid SENSATIONAL pop.
Say YOU want to be a DJ
This can then lead to saying you need DJing lessons! They might invite
you over to theirs for a joint and a crash course in the basics. The next
thing you know, you’re at their warehouse conversion bent over a Pioneer
PLX-1000. That’s a type of deck, by the way. And if you’d done your
research, you’d know that. And you might have pulled a DJ by now.
Be a celebrity
This helps more. Again, it depends on how much of a celebrity you are. If you’re Olly Alexander,
and you’re reading this right now, you’ll be fine! You don’t need to read this! Go forth babes.
However. If you were an extra on Season 3 of Tracey Beaker, then LISTEN CLOSELY: Capitalise
on your fame, no matter how miniscule! This is the self-promotion generation. If you work in a
restaurant and once had a bit part in Hollyoaks, don’t tell people you’re a waiter, tell them you’re
an actor. And you might pull a DJ as a result. They like famous people.
So that’s that! My work here is done. Go out and bag yourselves a DJ.
And don’t blame me if you can’t, it’s because you’re doing it wrong.

Les Poppeurs’ Most Outrageous
Moments in Italo and hi-NRG
It goes without saying that the late ‘70s and well, pretty much all of the ‘80s had some of the most
amazing, outrageous, avant-garde, fabulous fashion and music history has seen. And we at Les
Poppeurs love to splash about in the spangly, chiffon end of that. Ahead of our FIRST BIRTHDAY
EXTRAVAGANZA this Saturday we’ve picked the campest, most outrageous moments in disco,
Italo and hi-NRG that are almost too good to be true. Let us take you into our (slightly flammable)
world of big hair, smoke machines, sneaky hits of liquid gold and shiny metallic catsuits...
By Rachael Williams & Whitney Weiss
Rachael:
Whitney:
1. THE SPACESHIP DJ BOOTHS AT COSMIC CLUB
Italians love outrageous DJ booths. It’s possible this
trend started with the booth at Baia Degli Angeli
that was located inside a glass elevator that played
to multiple floors, but it definitely reached its zenith
with not one but TWO spaceship-shaped DJ booths
at Cosmic Club in Lake Garda. It’s only fitting
that this was where Daniele Baldelli developed his
signature “cosmic” sound.
5. RAFFAELLA CARRA’S DANCE MOVES
If you are only familiar with her as a host on
the Italian version of The Voice, you need to
recontextualize. Raffaella Carra elevated camp to
exciting new heights, which is quite an achievement
when you look at the musical audiovisual landscape
of Italy in the 1970s. During one particularly frenetic
rendition of her fabulous English-language song
“Black Cat,” Ms. Carra channels Liza at her jumpiest
and whips a cape around with aplomb, perhaps
temporarily forgetting that the song is about a
cat and not a bat, before doing some impressive
floorwork. This is further accentuated when the guy
operating camera one clearly tries to take a small
bump, ends up inhaling his entire bag of drugs,
and then gets really into aggressive zooming for the
remaining 70 seconds.
2. THE VIDEO FOR HYPNOTIC TANGO BY MY
MINE
This video opens with a bunch of people in crazy
outfits dancing on a beach. It could be a Cornish
pagan dance. It could be people still up after an
insane fancy dress party. I don’t know because
they never come back to those people again.
It’s never explained. The rest of the video is the
band playing in hall. There are what looks to be
giant posters of poppers bottles on either side.
Coincidence? I think not...
3. MIQUEL BROWN
Miquel Brown is a Canadian singer whose parents
named her Michael. But so that people didn’t get
confused with a children’s author and producer of
the same name they changed the spelling to Miquel.
But y’know, it’s still pronounced Michael. She makes
this list by worthy of her fabulous ditty “So Many
Men, So Little Time.” A feeling I think you all know
too well. Oh, and she’s Sinitta’s mum, so there’s that.
4. SHEILA AND B DEVOTION’S OUTFIT IN THE
VIDEO FOR SPACER
Not quite Italo but it is way cosmic. And oh boy is
Sheila’s outfit is impressive. Girl knows how to rock a
metallic jumpsuit. In this case she’s paired with a pink
mosiac shoulder detailing that is amazing and I’m a
bit jealous. Also she’s got a poor man’s light sabre
to dance with so that’s pretty cool. Plus her B(lack)
Devotion back-up trio to make her look that bit more
blonde and French.
6. THAT TIME MAN 2 MAN PERFORMED MALE
STRIPPER ON TOP OF THE POPS
God bless the UK, where a song like “Male Stripper”
can somehow go from club hit to crossover pop
sensation, eventually landing one-half of Man to
Man (Miki Zone had passed away a year prior) on
television to perform for straight people with perms.
Go-go boys in leather and military garb add to the
atmosphere while Paul Zone strips off his leather to
reveal more leather, then flannel, then a vest, then
some bondage accessories to the delight of the
squealing and oblivious girls in the crowd.

7. PATRIZIA PELLEGRINO’S SONG-WRITING SKILLS
ON MUSICA SPAZIALE
Each of Patrizia Pellegrino’s records is a moment
of shimmery poppers-soaked genius, but if you do
not speak Italian, you are missing out on the best
parts: what she’s actually singing about. On “Musica
Spaziale,” Patrizia implores you to follow her into the
elevator, where you’ll find a natural blonde, cosmic
and cordial (once can only assume she’s talking
about herself). The best part about this is that natural
blonde rhymes with cordial in Italian.

Royal Vauxhall
It’s 1988 and queer London is partying hard under the spectre of AIDS,
the scrutiny of the press and the shadow of Clause 28. When Princess
Diana dreams of a wild night out away from the long lenses of the
paparazzi and the ruthless Royals at the Palace, best buddies Freddie
Mercury and Kenny Everett know there is only one place to take her: the
Royal Vauxhall Tavern.
Only trouble is: how the hell are they going to get one of the most
famous faces in the world through the door without blowing her cover?
Their night at the Tavern is the stuff of legend. Desmond O’Connor’s
irreverent yet insightful new musical reveals that what they learnt about
themselves and each other would shock and propel them through the
final years of their tragically shortened lives.

It’s Hoist Black this Saturday. If you’re curious to know what
happens in this hot house of horny men, we had caught up with
host Unkut Kurt for the lowdown:
“This is the biggest and sexiest men only dress code party on the
planet! I can’t wait to slip into my tight one-piece leather suit, put
my big boots and leather gloves on and just go for it! Dozens of
leather and rubber guys will come to London for just this one night.
That’s why we do this party. Every time it gets bigger and better. And
let me tell you a secret: the minute you arrive at The Hoist you can
smell the leather and rubber in the air. I get hard just talking about
it! It’s the dogs bollocks, man! Hoist Black parties are now so busy
that we have decided to do this monthly. Yep, we’re gonna kick ass
in 2016! I am also excited that the very exclusive and - erm - quite
elitist European fetishmen club “Men in Leather Corp” have made
HOIST BLACK their home. Expect macho guys in gear galore!”
The DETAILS:
- Hoist Black is on Saturday 6th February from 10pm - 4am.
- They pride themselves on operating the strictest dress code in the
world: leather and/ or rubber only. NO exceptions.
- Expect an international crowd, since the party is also promoted in
Europe through The Hoist Basements (Berlin)
- This means HUNDREDS of leathermen, rubber dudes, boot slaves
and Masters to turning up to get down.
- 2 arches are now open, both wall-to-wall leather and rubber
- There’s a brand new play area courtesy of Expectations London and
UK Red.
- Boot shine boy Karl will be on hand to buff up those boots!
- Plus a rope bondage show courtesy of Meister Armin
- Exclusive sounds will be provided by DJ/ producer M.Arana (USA)
So what are you waiting for? Gear up!

joined by the superb
Dave Kendrick for some
serious deep sounds. In
the Bar, there’ll be R’n’B
from Mistamaker and
Manchester's Off The Hook
head honcho Anthony
Crank. This is Handsome.
You are handsome.

We LOVE the sound of this. The
word “trouble” is one that we
mostly associate with amazing
pop songs. Trouble by Britney
is one of her best album tracks
ever. And Neon Jungle have
an absolute banger called
Trouble. And you KNOW how
much we love Neon Jungle.
Anyway now it’s a night at
The Glory! As far as we can
discern, the vibe is sort of biker
chick meets art fag meets
cheap porn. Leather, chains,
facial hair maybe. They’ve got
a special performance from
The Bearded Lady, as well
as a set from Kal The Naked
DJ, who does what he says on
the tin.

who occasionally does turns

talented, and she’s got a

January might be a quiet time
for some pubs and clubs in London,
but not at BRÜT! Beautiful bears,
bad blokes, cute cubs and a metric
fuckton of hunks could be found
throughout the Steelworks at Cannon

their qwerkout to twerky mashups,
pop and disco from DJ Dreadful,
Silverhook, and Ben Jamin, while
in Vault 2, sweat and hair moved to
the sound of pulsing deep and tech
house mixes from Louis Lennon,
Ross Jones, Luke Casey Browne
and special guest DJ Morlex. Now
in it’s 15th inning, with it’s sexy and
friendly vibes, BRÜT has really begun
solidifying itself as a golden staple
in the Bear calendar with no sign of
slowing down. We can’t wait to return
on the 27th of February for their first
anniversary, which promises to be a
stellar bear blowout.

With a stellar lineup the third
annual Winter Pride took over
historic Elephant & Castle venue
The Coronet with live acts, DJs,
delicious Smirnoff cocktails and
a party set to spiral into the
early hours ‘til dawn. With big
name headliners performing
and local LGBTI heroes taking
to the decks, it was without
questions one of biggest parties
in this year’s pink calendar. This
year they partnered with Pride
In London, meaning ticket sales
went towards supporting pride in
the capital’s LGBTI community all
year round.
Clubbers were able to spend
the night exploring four distinct
rooms within the confines of the
club and four separate outside
arches full of queer culture!
The main room was jampacked from beginning to
end with big name artists like
Smokin’ Jo, Tom Stephan and
Paul Heron while the East Side
room brought DJ sets from
Hannah Holland, Jonjo Jury,
Guy Williams, and D.Ramirez.
Room three was a London
celesbian takeover and Room
four had
Neil Prince, David O and
QBoy presenting their R & She: a
night dedicated to the Queens of
R&B and hip-hop from the ‘90s
to the present day.
With a food court, a swag
shop, a Horse Meat Disco
takeover, plus familiar London
faces including the cast of
recent critically acclaimed
“dragumentary” Dressed As

high priestess Jonny Woo and
fabulous hosts Chrissy Darling

Thursday nights in Clubland have
always heralded the start of the weekend,
and no where shows this more than the
incomparable Gravity at Protocol, part
of the Fire complex. For over a decade
Gravity has been at the forefront of
afterhours clubbing on the London party
scene and now, with the legendary Fat
Tony at the helm and DJing, it has become
the ultimate destination serving up the
best eclectic house thru it’s booming
funktion one sound system. Over in room
two Lewis G Burton and his team of east
London creatives (freaks?) dish up a
generous helping of camp both musically
and visually while über host Issac Jones
manages to combine fun, flirty hotness
with slick efficiency keeping the machinery
oiled and the punters happy. With an
eclectic crowd drawn from right across the
gay spectrum, Thursdays at Gravity are
officially FEROCIOUS.

Dalston Superstore was wall to wall with fashion and excitement for the much anticipated
return of one of east London’s most iconic parties! To mark the special occasion, the
WUT?CLUB family favourites were assembled to present us with an all-star event to help us
say goodbye to those January blues! To help us were the wonderful Twinnies who gave us
crowd (and traffic) stopping looks with matching road safety clutches! Jacqui Potato and Annie
Pics played us the pop classics while Raven Mandella owned dancefloor all night. Downstairs,
founder and resident, Attack Attack Attack and Superstore’s own Joseph Icaro were joined by
the incredible Joshua James who rocked us with the perfect soundtrack for a wicked comeback!
Killer looks, sickening talent and some of the most everything creatures you could never
imagine. WUT?CLUB is literally cat nip for club kids, they just can’t get enough.

through the night. Since its inception,
Homostash has treated us to the bushiest

Founder Tafanik gave us the tashiest of
Tech House and Techno downstairs and
was supported upstairs with Nu Disco and

Comptons is, as the name suggests, on Old Compton Street! They
have two major achievements: They haven’t been turned into a Pizza
Express. And. They’re ALWAYS full of sexy men. Always, always,
always. And we mean MEN. Whether it’s hot hairy daddy types
or burly rugby bears. So pull on your tightest pair of jeans, book
the next day off, then head over to watch the Six Nations rugby
this weekend. It’s France VS Italy (WOOF) on Saturday, or if you
like something a bit more local, there’s also Scotland VS England
(WOOF WOOF). Then on Sunday, Ireland is up against Wales
(WOOF WOOF HOWL).
12 Old Quebec Street, W1H 7AF
City of Quebec have had a makeover and now they’re WELL
posh! Urban and sleek. It’s a great space in there, roomy. And it’s
conveniently located in Marble Arch, just a stone’s throw away from
the Vivienne Westwood outlet in Selfridges. Who are we kidding. A
stone’s throw away from the McDonalds on Oxford Street. Anyway,
along with their new image they’ve got a new drinks menu including
a Dainty Damsel that’s made with vodka and Prosecco, plus fab
cabaret every Sunday. Go check it out!

Ku have got loads going on over the
weekend as usual; you can watch the Six

relax with a delicious Bloody Mary to
soothe your hangover; throw some shapes

Sunday nights. Plus you’re almost always
guaranteed to see host with the most,

with a champagne flute. There’s something

his weekend sees the return of National Student Pride to London for its 11th
year. Hosted at the University of Westminster’s Marylebone campus and
the infamous G-A-Y night clubs, this year the event’s main focus is tackling
the vital but difficult conversation of mental health stigma. The free daytime
festival that takes place on the Saturday will also have panels with celebrities,
activists and politicians with RUComingOut.com, looking at angles of coming
out you might not have thought of. There’s also a team of LGBT YouTubers
lining up to discuss the impact of the platform on changing perceptions and
giving hope to young people. Then of course there’s StudentPride does Lip Sync. Plus cabaret,
live music and you can even bag yourself a job at the biggest LGBT careers fair in the UK.
“National Student Pride is always an amazing experience,” says Hatti Smart, National
Student Pride co-chair. “We have over 1500 LGBT students come together for a weekend of
events, including the largest LGBT careers fair in the UK, exclusive film screenings, and panels
that discuss topics important to LGBT youth.
“This year, National Student Pride will be placing a real emphasis on mental health,
with mental health issues still affecting LGBT youth disproportionately to their peers. This is
something am I really excited about, as mental health is a topic very close to my heart. We
will be holding a mental health discussion, chaired by editor of Attitude magazine Matthew

Todd, which will provide real-life experiences and expertise to all
those on the LGBT spectrum.”
The daytime festival on Saturday 6th February will be held at
the University of Westminster’s Marylebone campus, where over
1500 LGBT students from across the UK will be taking part in a
weekend of festivities.
The focus of this year’s event is on the difficult, but vital
discussion of mental health, which disproportionately affects LGBT
people. The mental health debate will be hosted by Matthew
Todd, editor of Attitude Magazine, who will provide real-life
experiences and expertise.
Joining him on the panel will be: Johnny Benjamin, known
for the #FindMike campaign and for his brave documentaries
and accounts about his schizophrenia; Taz Edwards-White (LBQ),
mental health coordinator for LGBT people for Metro; Bisi Alimi,
World renowned Nigerian LGBT activist who has written and
spoke openly about his time with HIV and Mental Health issues;
and Munroe Bergdorf, Trans advocate and DJ.
The Coming Out discussion, in conjunction
with the Rainbow List high flyer Wayne Dhesi’s R
U Coming Out website, will be a panel focused
on challenging the idea that coming out is only
synonymous with being gay. It’s so much more now,
whether it’s about gender identity of being a secret
luster for Justin Bieber. We know you looked at
those pics. *clears internet history*
Celebrating Coming Out even further,
Tom Dingley’s widely celebrated Coming Out
photography series will be on display at the event
too. He’ll even be offering the opportunity for you to
take part too.
In a new addition to National Student Pride,
a fringe event will take place alongside the main
stage and LGBT YouTubers have been lining up
to come and share what they think their impact
has been on shaping our community as our daily
online time grows and grows. Chaired by, Calum
McSwiggan, on the panel includes Meredith and
Shoshana, Mawaan Rizman (How Gay Is Pakistan
BBC3 Documentary), Jamie Raines (Selfie A Day
Transition), and Riyad K (known for reading out
Grindr messages with his Mum).
To provide a ‘Mental Health Trigger free zone’
at all times at the event, a Safe Space room will
be provided all day and whenever a mental
health topic is discussed the other stage will avoid
discussion of mental health.
Finally, the daytime event will end on a huge
high as the Warwick Rowers return to talk about the
charity they launched at our event in 2014; Sports
Allies. Followed by what will be the most tasteful
and least camp part of the whole weekend: a
#StudentPride lip sync battle. Because if Channing
Tatum and Anne Hathaway can do it - they definitely
can. Oh and on Saturday night there will be a
G-A-Y Scream Queens Party at Heaven, where
there’s £2.50 drinks deals to all those wearing
a wristband (you can also get two nights out at
heaven and G-A-Y late for just £5).

This year we celebrate 40 years

what that’s got to do with us but
I’m here to tell you the spirit of

Right, so Zayn Malik, formerly
of the pre-teen pantycrusting
supergroup One Direction, has
released his first solo single.
Now, first off, let’s just get down
to brass tacks here. We’d all fuck
Zayn. I’d fuck him, you’d fuck him,
your mum would fuck him, your
dad would fuck him (WOOF). It
appears Zayn’s management are
aware of this, so they’ve placed
a call to Songz’R’Us (currently
operating under CEO Sia) and
ordered up a song for him to ‘sing’
by the name of “PILLOWTALK”.
It’s…well, it’s nothing special. It
sounds a bit Bieber-lite. The video
has a bleach-blonde (WOOF)
Zayn wandering around with that
model Gigi Somethingorother and
looking a bit dead-eyed. But you
know what? Who cares. Good for
you Zayn, I’m glad it’s all panning
out. Now take off your damn
pants. I’m hungry.

whether that’s a great idea or a
total piss take. It’s basically the
scraps drawer of her career. It’s
also pretty obvious which songs
were for which artist. The track
“Move Your Body” couldn’t be
much more Shakira if was belly
dancing in Barranquilla while
getting creampied by Gerard Piqué

and the album is alright, so give it
a spin for free on Spotify.
After finally digging Shaznay Lewis
out of their Big Yellow Storage unit,
Melanie Blatt and the Appleton
Sisters (of Galaxy Chocolate Advert
Fame) have reformed All Saints.
Shaz has penned them a new
single called “One Strike”, which
we choose to believe is going to
be fantastic. They also have an
album called Red Stripe coming
out. No wait, it’s called Red Flag.
Shit. Thought that was a shoutout
to all the times I’ve loudly sobbed
to “Never Ever” after downing

Finally, Rihanna’s new single
“Work” ft Drake is out and I don’t
want to talk about it.

director Sean Baker for just
closing Grindr, opening his
camera app, and getting on
with it. And now it’s become
a massive cult hit, created
the Academy Awards’ first
transgender campaign, and
been selected for dozens of
film festivals. Which is all so
hilariously audacious.
As it turns out, the usage
of phone cameras is great,
because it unwittingly gives the
film an insane sense of realism.
Watching it is LIKE watching
your friends’ videos they upload
to Facebook or whatever.
Suddenly you’re there with SinDee and Alexandra, screeching
in the back of a cab or asking
strangers for a lighter.
That’s the other thing:
tiny details like that are so
endearing, so everyday. It’s
a film about transgender
prostitutes, but it’s been done in
a way that anyone could identify
with them. Which is so great and
so important.
It’s also down to two
amazing turns from actors
Kitana Kiki Rodriguez and
Mya Taylor. Quite apart
from marking a turning point
in cinema as transgender
actors in transgender roles,
they’re just great! Instantly
likeable, instantly hilarious,
instantly emotive. Mya’s more
introspective and sensitive,
Alexandra is genuinely Oscarworthy. Special mention too to
Mickey O’Hagan, who’s longsuffering Armenian taxi driver,
Dinah, provides a great contrast
with the handbag-swinging,
drink-swilling madness of the
rest of the movie.
Tangerine was made in 2015,
but it’s so 2017. It couldn’t be
more cool, crazy, sexy and selfassured. If the hot girl you were
too scared to talk to at school
were a movie, she’d be Tangerine.
Tangerine is showing at
Hackney Picturehouse on
Wednesday 17th February.

The Tell Tale Heart
“A macabre nightmare”… no, it’s not the name of Lana del Rey’s
new single, but the best way to describe The East London Session
Players and The Glory’s production of Edgar Allan Poe’s gothic horror
classic, The Tell Tale Heart. As someone who indulges in the likes of
The Exorcist and The Shining, I really enjoyed this voyeuristic view into
the maddening breakdown that comes from meth addiction.
Deftly directed by Giorgio Spiegelfeld, this version is pulled
from late 19th century America and translated to a modern day East
London basement flat. The Glory’s very own Jonathan Wooster plays
the drug addled narrator – intense, paranoid and quite frankly, a bit
of a head case, he is as impressive an actor as his performance is
unsettling. As the sole member of cast on stage, Wooster commands
the stage with ease, not surprising following his recent non-drag turns
in The East London Lecture and TRANSFORMER.
This is an immersive 60 minute sensory overload; you plunge
yourself into the dark recesses of the Glory’s basement and snake
your way round what can only be described as a hovel – expertly
constructed by set designed Tony Horneker – before perching yourself
in the eaves. As you watch Wooster’s slow descent into madness
there’s an overbearing feeling that you shouldn’t be here, watching,
QX_1091_Review Section.indd 40

but you can’t take your eyes off it, he’s as desperate and unhinged as
Björk at a Selena Gomez concert.
The whole experience is accentuated by the pulsing, almost
hypnotic, electronica of DJ Hannah Holland’s sound-track. The
narration faithfully follows the source text, mostly occurring off stage,
booming in your ears, until the narrator finally loses it and is all up
in your business, pulling you into his painful madness of surveillance,
isolation and chem.-seshes.
This all sounds mad as a box of frogs, and it is, but I can’t
recommend enough taking a furtive peek into this dark descent
into madness, even if just to take you out of your comfort zone for
an evening. The team have done an incredible job modernising a
story that’s been parodied and adapted more often than Jocelyn
Wildenstein’s face (we’ve all seen that Simpsons episode). The Glory
really is a shining beacon of creative light in the London gay scene and
I can’t wait to see what the team come up with next.

Tangerine is filmed entirely on
an iPhone 5 camera, and follows
two transgender sex workers
through the streets of LA as they
toss off taxi drivers, smoke tina
and throw donuts at each other.
YES, it’s every bit as amazing
as it sounds. This film, is fucking
amazing. Sorry, wait, this isn’t a
Facebook status, this is a review
in a magazine. Let’s try again.
This film is a phenomenal portrait
of an unseen world, and not only
that, a powerful statement on
today’s cultural zeitgeist.
While obviously involving
transgender issues, in some
ways the goal of the movie
isn’t particularly to make any
particular point: it’s a dizzy,
debauched, drug-fuelled MESS.
In the best possible way.
The iPhone filming wasn’t
meant to be a gimmick or
product placement, it was
genuinely done due to budget
constraints. They couldn’t get
hold of a camera, basically.
MAJOR props to ingenious

IN THE WORKS
Video of the week
AYA ARCOS (15)
From Brazil, this gay drama has an involving home-made style and realistic characters. With
only a loose plot, it’s about the awkward relationship between a middle-aged writer and a
21-year-old rentboy who refuses to use condoms or get tested for HIV. The tension between
them is obvious, but the way it plays out isn’t. Complex and thoughtful, the film addresses a
big issue in a personal way. (TLA)
Film of the week
TRUMBO (15)
The true story of Oscar-winning screenwriter Dalton Trumbo (Spartacus) is seriously riveting,
especially as played by Oscar-nominee Bryan Cranston with a huge dose of wry humour.
Blacklisted for refusing to participate in the anti-Communist hearings of the 1950s, Trumbo
is a fascinating man, and a great movie character. The film is funny and razor sharp. And
the cast includes Helen Mirren and John Goodman on peak firm.

Fun with MA1
The home of Buff - your favourite horny, naked party - The Backstreet has
reopened and is busier than ever. Buff has been running for well over 10 years
now and with the introduction of Mega Buff, held on the first Sunday of the month,
things will be getting bigger and hornier than ever in 2016. The Backstreet boasts
a fully heated smokers terrace and playspace in addition to all the dark corners in
the club. With the summer just round the corner (!) it’s a great venue for those of
you who enjoy being naked outside.
If you’re into something a bit kinkier, then ClubCP is better than ever at The
Bunker Bar. The venue is currently in the middle of a redesign and now boasts more
space, a new bar and will very soon have its own video room. The perfect place to
spank the night away. Naturally there’s a big changing room and secure coatcheck
so everything is taken care of, and watch out for the extra Saturday Spank Club
coming up later in 2016. If you like a good spanking this is the club to be at!
Elsewhere, Suited, the infamous night for lads into suits and smart casuals, will
be making a return on Friday nights this Spring. Oh, and keep an eye out for the
return of SAS returns in April. If you’re into shagging around with skinheads, military
men, scallies, leather or rubber lads - or just lads with boots on – you’ll love it! Held
at Ted’s Place, It’s basically one giant, macho dark room - so get stuck in!
MA1 hold plenty of other nights and private events throughout the year including
the London Jack Off Club and the Naked Mates private social events. For more
information on all of MA1’s nights visit: www.ma1.co.uk.

Hi Dr Alex,
I was on holiday recently and got high and hooked up
with a guy. Although we started using condoms we soon
stopped because we were having sex pretty much all
day. No excuse I know. Anyways I woke up to realise that

Hi,
Pre Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP)
is a way to reduce your risk
of picking up HIV by taking
an anti-HIV medicine called
Truvada. Research so far
shows that it is very effective
and reduces HIV transmission
by 86%. There are two ways
that you can take PreP. Either
continuous use which means
taking a tablet every day or
intermittent use that means
taking two tablets between 2
and 24 hours before sex and
then one a day for two days
after the unsafe sex.
PreP is not a substitute for
using condoms and it won’t
protect you from other sexually
transmitted infections but it is
very useful for guys who put
themselves at risk of HIV by not
using condoms. And we know
this is much more likely if you
party and play, a worryingly
growing scene across London.
And yes I agree with you
that PreP not being available
Some guys clinic hop and
visit NHS sexual health clinics
saying they need PEP and then
only use the Truvada. But this
is unethical and there are a
couple of legitimate options
available. Firstly there is a
private PreP clinic at Dean
Street Sexual health clinic
https://getprep.uk/
“PreP is not a substitute for using
condoms and it won’t protect you from
other sexually transmitted infections.”
on the NHS is outrageous.
We know from studies across
the world that it radically
cuts the numbers of new HIV
cases. The NHS is considering
the issue and there are now
campaign groups to push for
it to be made available (www.
iwantprepnow.co.uk)
The service is subsidised
but it will still cost you £400
a month for 40 tablets. There
are other options available
too. I suggest you check the
Iwantprepnow website as this
has all the information about
PreP and where you can safety
buy it and use it.
